- Mfrosty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1310...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1.....1...Happy new year!
- DogWings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, if I had back all those seconds it took me to read 'duplicate' on this site, I'd be at least five minutes younger. STOP STEALING MY YOUTH!
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We should completely re-calibrate our time system... this one is outdated.
- search, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol
someone always says 'old news' or 'duplicate post'.
lol
If I had a second for every time someone said that... - D3THk4t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Important to know that UTC != GMT != Zulu... I forget which GPS time is... I think Zulu.
- jtnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Next thing you know they'll be making us switch our clocks back and forward an hour... Oh, wait...
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm happy that our calendar is accurate enough so only this kind of minor change is needed.
- andyzweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweeet thats like one extra second of sleep right, do i have to turn my clocks back for this one?
- MrDiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yup that's true. That's why they do this. So the time "match" with the Earth's rotation.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"we've known this for months.."
I sure haven't.... - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I heard the earth rotating is slowing down.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it might be a dupe but who reads 130 day old news? awsome you get my digg.
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The movement of the earth from the Tsunamis made them to decide this year, not next year.
I believe the earthquake/waves cause ~6 seconds to be lost, but over a month they were regained except for ~1.6 seconds - zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its probably because of that tsunami. i heard the earth's day was reduced by a few milliseconds as the earth kinda caved in or something...not too knowledgeable on that but thats wat i heard..
- MrDiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah i agree. Sometimes we just never heard of something so interesting as this. There are also other issues like this one, for example. Did you guys know that the African continent in a period of time separates itself from europe 3 cm or so? Interesting isn't it?
- Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0worlds going to end?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll enjoy the extra second, just 1 more to enjoy my new year resolutions before new years.
- SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will this screw up the servers around the world, I wonder?
- G4techTV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://digg.com/links/Take_Your_Time:_Extra_Second_Will_be_Added_to_2005
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whenever I need an accurate time I just use the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium 133 atom.
- Quatre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting considering a day si not in fact even 24 hours.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't realize how common this was. According to this article, 22 times in 27 years!
http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/leapsec.html
"This pattern reflects the general slowing trend of the Earth due to tidal braking. "
Contains additional information as well. - holymoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This could cause more problems than y2k if advertised correctly...
- scottym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Next thing you know, they'll be adding a whole extra day to a year or something.
- OhBrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gee. I think your spelling is of. Remember: spelling counts.
- D3THk4t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.leapsecond.com/java/gpsclock.htm
UTC can't be == GMT... unless I'm mistaken - GMT changes for day-light savings time...
And do you _really_ want to mess with my TimeFysh? http://tinyurl.com/awdke - Lumbeekid06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seriously, i hate when people cry dupe and at first they post no link, then some genious posts a link but its old as hell, im sorry but i cant remember that long ago dude, i dont even think i was envolved in this site thatlong ago!
- 3Den, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For most purposes, GMT & UTC are the same thing. Zulu is another word for either.
GMT is based on the rotation of the earth.
UTC is based on atomic clock signals and satellite observation and other high tech stuff.
UTC is used for accurate scientific measurements when time is important, as it is regular. GMT can fluctuate as the earth's timing fluctuates.
UTC is periodically adjusted to match up with GMT (and such changes are recorded, accurately, for scientific purposes) - BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Important to know that UTC != GMT != Zulu
Zulu and UTC are the same. Different words for the same thing. UTC is an acronym while Zulu is easier to say over radio and is thus used in some contexts such as aviation. Perhaps what you were thinking of was TAI... - Corrosionx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pff the mayans calendar was much better than that
- Zabbawack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this mean you get two new years kisses
- MrDiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey...I posted the story. First I checked if it was repeated. If you think that is "old", or don't like, then don't digg. This is not a contest!.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"UTC can't be == GMT... unless I'm mistaken - GMT changes for day-light savings time..."
You are mistaken, the UK moves to BST during the summer, but GMT remains the same - tresser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the last time i remember this happening, i got to hear the recording of the second of silence on Off The Hook. Emmanuel called up the US Naval Observatory and played back the recording.
can't wait this year to be able to hear that second of silence live. - cvk_b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Woohoo! Longer weekend.
- The_Raven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Earth has been slowing down for a long time, when the dinosaurs walked this earth one day was only 21 hours.
- Heiliger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great, now I have to go around my house and set all the clocks back a second... Serenity, Now!
- FrostyTheDMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cheese and rice my brain hurts... 6 pip, 7 pip, diet pipsi???
- The_Raven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is also a bit old news since this post (http://bitsofnews.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2388) is from August 09.
- BostonJerry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meet me at the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. I think I have a plan...
