- Somniis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Would be nicer if they put them all on one page...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19That mole-rat is one ugly beast.
- DrScott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I see what you did thar.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Not funny called, he thanked you for taking that list off his hands.
- randovaro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Number 11: Zebras could easily just gang up and kick the shiat out of their lion predators. I mean the zebra to lion ratio is what, like 50 to 1? Zebras could effectively wipe out their number one killer in an afternoon of hoofy whoop-arse, thus ridding themselves of their arch nemesis once and for all, and finally realising their long dream of a horsey utopia.
But somehow it's just never occurred to them. - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That's got to be the worst designed website ever.
- randovaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Ladies & gentlemen, I present you with the new Digg Mascot... the Mole Rat
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Unfortunately another slide show.
Apparently a lot of these sites don't trust we can read and scroll all on one page. - Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wikipedia's picture is even worse:

Fascinating fact from the Wikipedia article though: Mole rats lack pain sensation due to an absence of a "neurotransmitter called Substance P" in the skin (!) - auburnguy1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That mole rat looks like a 4 legged tumor with small eyes.
- bbhh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4hey man the crocodile one and the beaver one were funny, i'm glad i clicked to see the comment.
- kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm, it seems the selection parameters doesn't care much whether a zebra can do this or not.
Savanah can theoretically support lets say, 1000 zebra.
1000 zebra can support lets say 10 lions. Well it could feed 10,000 lions, but only for one day.
So 2 or more zebra get eaten a day and more are born to fill in the gap.
Why would the zebra genome care if 2 out of 1000 die out?
Now if the lion can't eat to survive then the genome takes a 1 out of 10 hit.
So for the lion, its far more important for the individual to survive than it is for the zebra.
This seems to be the case for most predator/prey relationships that I can think of. You have this skewed ratio.
There is little natural selective pressure for zebra to get smart, but a huge amount for a lion.
Or course you have Larry Niven's Puppeteers. But thats another story. - WhiteRaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not a false argument when it already acknowledges that "intelligence is hard to quantify".
Also, your observations concerning autism is entirely besides the point. The article was making comparisons between *different species*. The abnormal mental development of an autistic person simply can't be compared to the difference between pigs and chimps. Since an autistic person is in fact a human being, the normal blueprint of their makeup is to have high intelligence and good memory just as a goldfish has low intelligence and poor memory. It is not all that strange that defects can impact the intelligence of an autistic person more than their memory.
In other worlds, *in the absence of defect*, the article's association of intelligence and memory is entirely valid. - dominasian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i dont know about you but i found "Many fish swap sex organs" as a title was pretty interesting
- espouser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Crocodiles swallow rocks as ballast and whale milk is 50% fat were the most interesting.

7. For Beavers, Days Get Longer in Winter
6. Mole-Rats aren't Blind
5. Baby Chicks and Brotherhood -
It's a mistake to think of evolution as producing selfish animals concerned only with their own survival. Altruism abounds in cases where a helping hand will encourage the survival of genetic material similar to one's own. Baby chicks practice this "kin selection" by making a special chirp while feeding. This call announces the food find to nearby chicks, who are probably close relations and so share many of the chick's genes. The key to natural selection isn't survival of the fittest animal. It's survival of the fittest genetic material, and so brotherly behavior that favors close relations will thrive. -

1. Parrot Talk More than Just Squawking - DatDudeWiggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I knew that. Chill with the retarded headlines.
- adc89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is one ugly website. I closed it 3 times thinking it was a popup.
Good stuff none-the-less. - WhiteRaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think the beaver one is worth even mentioning. Even people will stretch their days out to 27 or 28 hours if given a chance.
- zl1nk, on 10/30/2007, -1/+3this article is everything that is wrong with digg now. What made digg attractive is what is now killing digg.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1#1 is great. heard of the rest.
- robbiedo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is very insightful. As a former member of the teaching assistant mafia, I would say," That is a good question for your research paper."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was quite funny did you make that up or swipe it?
- randovaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks. It was all me. I came up with a hypothesis years ago while watching a documentary that predators, in order to survive, must be more intelligent than their prey. In support of this hypothesis I present you with humankind - the most intelligent animal, and lethal predator, the Earth has ever known.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1silly title. how does it know we don't know.

with download or stream - resplence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually they can. I guess you're new to digg.
- kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well @cloned kinda brings up a good point. But zebra don't need teeth or claws to hurt.
You gotta remember why lions take sick animals. A health zebra can kick a lion in the head, and that makes the lion dead. - Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1#12 or so: scorpions glow under UV: http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2007/01/02/making-better-scorpion-under-uv-photos.html
(Note this is not limited to scorpions) - ray901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"4. Many Fish Swap Sex Organs"
I have to admit I have never seen or heard of two fish swapping their sex organs. I guess if you're a Grouper it might be fun to swap sex organs with a Whale once in a while..... - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"This was actually used to demonstrate that women were dumber than men in the early 1900's because their brain is smaller than a man's brain on average."
I cant see where you're trying to go with this...?
j/k - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same as birds using landmarks so they know where they're going.
" Can you imagine a road trip vacation without missed exits, stubborn drivers or map-folding disasters? "
Um... yeah, if ive travel the same route every year for 10 years. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5"Birds Use Landmarks to Navigate Long Journeys"
The WTC towers in NYC were always full of birds on the sides of the buildings and on top on the observation deck on one of the towers. - zakool21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Parrots being able to create novel sentences? Already proven scientifically that they can't. Plus, this website is designed like crap. Clutter all over the place!
- mydave, on 08/04/2008, -0/+0nice. thank you for new information and very interesting information.

http://www.pcard4u.com - skrea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep, I'm sure I heard that crocs swallow the rocks for that reason too.
Think about it, if the croc needs the stones to sink, how does it come back up again?
*(comment to post by cdmarcus below) - goggi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1About mole-rats: "Light may suggest that a predator has broken into a tunnel, which could explain why subterranean diggers developed sight in the first place."
Anyone good at biology that could comment on these rodents actually developing from pre-mammal species to mammals and then to subterranean diggers and _then_ developing eyes?? - cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Animals swallow rocks because it's necessary for their digestive system, if they have a gizzard. However, I have no idea whether or not crocodiles have gizzards.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3that's my mom you're talking about, jerk

I know, it's dumb - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Just because you don't know about something doesn't mean it's a surprise once you bother to find out.
How long does it take to get bored with flogging God as a delusion and get around to mopping up all these other common place delusions. I figure if you started mopping up the small ones the big one with lack of support will dissipate. - Cloned, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Yeah, cause zebras could totally use their huge teeth and charp claws to kill the lions....
