Great review. I sadly had WOOT syndrome and was repeatedly pressing F5 for the past 20 minutes on his site. I'm still waiting for his Call of Duty 4 review.
Mass Effect is one of those games that looks at first like it's going to be the game to end all games, but it's sadly flawed in my opinion. The combat system is shallow, the "exploration" runs you around the same desolate planets and stations again and again, and the unskippable cutscenes make for needlessly punitive gameplay. This one looks great, and it truly does offer some extreme advances to the genre like the dialog system and the uncannily realistic facial expressions, but ultimately it just leaves me cold.
Another awesome review. I'm surprised he didn't harp on the elevator rides any. But I can relate to his comments on the vehicle's handling. It is much like me on a unicycle.
That said, why does he review game genres that he hates to begin with? He reviewed Halo without playing the multiplayer, he reviewed Mass Effect and prefaced it by saying that he hated RPGs. It's like reviewing Wario Ware if you hate minigames or Tetris if you hate solving puzzles.
He's absolutely entertaining, I don't think there's any question of that, but for people to be making him out as the "savior of the game review industry" is sort of preposterous.
His reviews aren't meant to be reviews, they're meant to be entertainment.
Not trying to sound like a fanboy but I was actually looking forward to Yahtzee's rant about this game but in this case it was sadly lacking. I was left with the feeling that he couldn't be bothered to give enough of a ***** about the game in the first place to be disappointed about it enough to turn into the Hulk of game bashing that he normally is.
I guess I can't expect Yahtzee to hit every game out of the park.
My comment to a friend was that the last half of the game was a great experience, once you had run around doing boring things for hours on end and were able to actually fight the tougher enemies without being killed instantly.
I almost didn't make it past the first parts due to boredom. I loved the KOTR games, and felt like I was playing them all over again (hence the boredom) until I go to the last parts of the game when the story was more interesting.
I just wished it was more RPGy. The universe has such a massive amount of detail and depth to it, I would have loved it if that was explored more. I was expecting the planets you could land on to be like those in KotOR, or the Citadel. Even if it wasn't all the planets you could land on, but the main story line ones, I would have enjoyed it a lot more.
It's a shame, but never the less, a fantastic story driven shooter.
one again, a hilarious and insightful review, but as he admitted himself, he obviously did not play the game to its fullest. An RPG fan is going to love this game, hands down.
Wow, Im not a huge fan of Mass Effect except for the excellent story but I really feel as if this was a shallow and generic review. Didn't figure out weapon mods till 6 hours in? WTF?! I pirated the game and still grasped it within the first hour. And yea, where are the elevator jokes? This was more like a ***** X-Play review where they make fun of one stupid thing instead of really tearing into it. I regret that I dugg this will have to be my first undigg. Dont tell me ZP is losing his touch.
brutal honesty depicting how the averadge gamer plays most games. Impatiently and to about 40-75% completion, unless you are speaking of course about those pesky kids aged 14 with no freinds and no school. I for one, do not have 200 hours to throw away much like our charismatic freind yahtzee over here.
he needs to review super mario galaxy. i think the game's awesome, but i wanna see him rant about it. he's the only reviewer that can actually point out bad stuff about the game without coating it in *****.
