- bokchoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Tilt Controller + "Standard" control scheme + rumble.
Great Justice. - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15chocobomog: RTFA, this wasn't done by Microsoft, just some random guy.
- airmann90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Guide for you guys who think it's fake...

http://www.adamthole.com/?p=18 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18What if there's a second wireless XBOX controller offscreen?
I can't prove it, but usually things like this that don't offer a HOWTO are staged. I mean, how hard is it to solder together random IC's, mount it to the back of a controller, and take a video of yourself at a favorable angle "playing" various games. MetaCafe = profit... so I have my doubts.
We need some nerd pr0n. Hi-res pics of how it was done :-D - Octopie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10No, Sony didn't have rumble because they lost yet another law suit and were told to stop using the rumble technology they did not own
- Brutus013, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Um, guys, there is a guide on how to do this just below the article.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Wow... how dare they rip off Nintendo! They were the first to have a motion sensor controller! OMGSPLOSION!!!
Oh wait... Microsoft had a motion sensor controller in the 90s. Wrap your trolling fanboy brain around that!
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/1998/may98/devicepr.mspx - whiteEEnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually it is only a 2-axis, but I'm glad you like it!
- ezikiel2517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It looks better than even the sixaxis.
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@biliabong6
Wow, I cannot believe you actually think that is true. Sad. - whiteEEnerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hi, I am Adam Thole, the guy who did it. I can assure you it is real. Anything in particular you want to see?
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Adam it looks cool and it certainly looks like you did a good job on it. I think there are two major problems with this first design that should concern anyone considering purchasing it.
1.) The circuit board on the back is exposed and it seems extremely easy to just have someone dirty it up or knock it lose with regular usage. Can't you devise some type of case to slap on the back to keep this protected?
2.) By performing this mod you removed the functionality of the analog stick, I may not speak for everyone but to me that was a disappointment. I would think that maintaining the usability of the original controller would be a priority.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your work with us and I hope someone gives you a good price on this first unit. - Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've used the Wii Remote w/ the Nunchuck and the Sixaxxis controller, and the motion control on the PS3 version seems more like an afterthought and isn't as comfortable to work with as the Wii Remote tends to be. 6 months ago, I was laughing my ass off at the prospect of this stupid looking TV remote that you played games with, but now after having used it, I gotta say, I think Nintendo really did some work on this controller.
And after 4 hours of Warioware, I gotta say, they did a damned good job. - effinboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Very kickass. I'll be ordering one. :D
- DatoeDakari, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It about as responsive as the PS3, there is a delay; Watch the phase 2 video.
http://www.adamthole.com/?p=16 - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad its only currently 3-axis.. Still an awesome mod I find tempting to attempt..
P.S. Considering how simple the mod is, I bet 3rd party controller makers will be releasing controllers with this functionality by the end of this year.. - pEEpiNgtoM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@chocobomog
"Wait, Sony does this and everyone spews hatred at them but now Microsoft does it and it is "very wickedly awesome"? What is the world coming to?"
What is the world coming to... its coming to you and everyone else who said something similar to the above are a fkn retard being that microsoft isnt the one doing this. Its a mod by someone who owns a 360, which since you were too dumb to gather up for yourself, now ive told you and you have no excuse - ski309, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm with jer2eydevil88 about removing the functionality of the joystick to gain this functionality. I would suggest a switch on the circuit board that allows you to switch back and forth between the joystick and the accelerometer, along with some sort of protective casing.
- onelilbadkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if that ***** goes wireless I'm buying it.
- xboxmods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is a nice mod, but it would have more potential on a wireless controller, because you could make a modified version of the battery pack, and stick it in there, also it would be nice if the user could turn it of with a small switch or button. Also, can you still use a headset if this is installed?
- rewen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're gullable. Even if it were true, did it not pass through your mind that rumble COULD'VE BEEN TEMPORARILY DISABLED while using the motion sensing? C'mon man.
- rewen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It looks better because it's a more comfortable controller with removable battery, better wireless (not in the case of the wired example), better style, and now the same possibilities of the SixAxis. Yes one of the sticks is no longer used. But do you use them on the SixAxis when using motion sensing? Not in the games I played. And besides all of this, it's a home-made mod! It's not supposed to compete! It's just for ***** around.
- whiteEEnerd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I just wanted to point out that I am putting my original mod up for sale on eBay. Those who want it really bad can bid on it while I try to come up with a way to meet demand. Perhaps this will also help prove that it is not fake?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290075115504 - rewen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would they need to contact him? Do you honestly think they cannot do this themselves? It's not magic.
In fact: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/1998/may98/devicepr.mspx
Unfortunately, it's also not hugely desired nor does it have as much potential as something like, perhaps, the WiiMote. - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@whiteEEnerd/Adam
It would be really cool if you could actually out it inside the controller, and, along the lines of a previous suggestion, make the original analog stick still function, maybe via the use of a DPST switch on the yellow and white lines ( http://www.adamthole.com/?p=8 ). After that, I don't think there is anything else you could do to improve it. It looks very responsive, and would be fun to try. - snipes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, digg does know better.
Problem is its users don't. - Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3have you ever even tried any motion sensing controller, omninode?
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What in the hell does "cos" mean? Who the ***** say "cos"? Cos means cosine, which is a trigonometric function. You have two choices to be grammatically correct, either say "because" or say " 'cause ."
- rewen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This pretty cool, I like seeing people come up with their own projects like this. I'm surprised by how well it works.
But no, Microsoft will probably never pick up on it and start pumping these out (it's not like they wouldn't have been able to do this on there own already, for years, you know since they released one of these for Win9x...). I don't see a lot of use for it, and if 360 games aren't natively programmed for it then meh.
I do think it's a slap in the face for PS3 users because this just proves that false statement that the rumble would have interfered. It also shows that Sony is trying to sell you on something that isn't as remarkable as they want you to think. - Brian48216, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Microsoft actually came out with a motion sensitive sidewinder controller a few years ago, and it just sorta sucked, not because it wasn't responsive or anything, but people were just never too keen on using the whole controller's movement to actually do things- which is different from Wii. It's sorta like having to use both hands to use one analog stick.
- magnificentruss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I might be a Luddite, but I have no interest in tilty controls. The 360 controller is fine the way it is.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2One axis, many axes.
- James2008, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I'm buying one. I hope he sells, or makes a tutorial. Hopefully it's not too expensive.
- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@estvir
RTFComments: I clearly state "Since it is a mod" , and my point still stands. No games will be programmed to use this feature. It is just a novelty. A cool one, and kudos to the creator, but a novelty nonetheless. - sm4k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Am I the only one that gets annoyed when people put "Tilt Control" and "Just like the Wii!" in the same sentence? As we all know by now, the Wii remote has more capabilities than just tilt sensativity, why is everyone still making this mistake?
I would expect this from the big media back in the early days of these consoles, but Digg knows better. - CPoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Can't wait to see how GoW does with this.
- NYC10004, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Why would anybody even want a tilt sensor for their 360? Best thing XBOX could do it stay off of the Tilt bandwagon.
- grinin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why not just wait until MS releases the next version of the XBOX which will probably include some sort of motion control similar to the PS3 and Wii? It will also have IPTV capabilities, a new cooler, more efficient CPU, and more likely than not a much bigger HDD?
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3can you still use the stick instead ? Otherewise you gimped the ***** out of a 360 controller.
- StateofMind09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It's useless until you can use it apparently.
- davidws, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Nice idea...but a crazy implementation(!) Why take a perfectly good analogue signal, convert it to digital, and then convert it back to analogue? I know everyone's into digital these days but a simple op-amp would have done the job wouldn't it?! I might have a go later and see if I can do it simpler. Talk about a sledgehammer to crack a nut!
- cam503, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Doesn't seem responsive enough.
- Brutus013, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0It has the most important analog stick mapped though, you can completely move this way in most games. And I would imagine you would just add another accelarometer (I suck at spelling, sorry) and then map it to the other stick.
- Echlin9, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I doubt its fake, I'm really hoping Microsoft contacts this guy and decides to make these officially.
- Havoc114, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1You know what they say "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"
With Sony copying the idea and Xbox360 users also implementing it, Nintendo must be blushing now :) - omninode, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Somebody took a perfectly good Xbox 360 controller and made it more difficult to use?
Yay!!!
Oh, wait. No, that's stupid. - omninode, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Yes, because I can't wait until every game console is infected by a control scheme that is unresponsive and unreliable.
Thanks for starting the trend, Nintendo! - DroidBlender, on 09/18/2008, -15/+11That is so very wickedly awesome!
- xxBondsxx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2and it responds better than the ps3 version!!! I saw a video of it and there's a huge delay... looks like this one is almost instant
- vroom171, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Does anyone else feel that his actions are slightly off from the screen's movements?
I think this might be a fake... -
