- beezn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13no hacking is useless, its like what Thomas Eddison said "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." in regards to how to make a lightbulb.
- jrob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"requires that the flash chip is removed from the drive circuit board and inserted into a special flash programming device"
I think you can actually read this through the drive in linux/windows. Sure this hack has a use now to play backups of all the recent games (some games cost as much as $60), but the reason it is useless (contrary to what joystiq writes) is that microsoft can easily release dashboard updates to detect and deny the use of modified drives. - sunnyd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Fair enough, but wasn't the original Playstation hack regarding a 'modchip' thought as useless, since it required 'difficult' hardware based modifications? I suspect this is a cover-your-ass statement released by the hackers, since it's already evident they're paranoid enough of being sued by Microsoft given their utmost secrecy of the hack.
If vendors start selling pre-programmed flash chips online as commonly as they sell modchips, this hack will be a success. That will eliminate that risky step of programming the device yourself and possibly bricking it. Even if you can't solder, there are many shady places happy to do it for you for a small fee if you just ask around.
Lastly, about the dashboard updates, most people with modded original XBOXs already do not connect to live or any other update service, and those willing enough to pirate games will purchase a second 360 and take their modded 360 offline. The only thing MS could do to force a dashboard update is to require new versions of firmware to run the latest games (a la PSP), but a homebrew could fix that as well. - dopelogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Team Xecuter (large modchip and development group) are currently working on a device to make it possible to do this mod simply by installing the drive in a PC. Its only a matter of time before any joe off the street with a torx driver will be able to do this "useless" mod. You can check out their progress at teamxecuter.com, or go to xbox-scene.com for all the latest xbox and 360 developments.
- ScottJG, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13"Did you know: Microsoft also make a popular operating system called Windows, an OS notorious for its backdoor vulnerabilities."
Damn, I had been sure it was just a gaming company. - ckpcw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I believe that Team Xecuter is working on creating a tool that will be able to reflash the drive's firmware from a PC. It is rumored that they are also working on a switch to flip between the hacked FW for backups and the stock for Live. see http://www.teamxecuter.com
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9This is totally different than the PS hack back in the day. Nowadays people want to connect to the internet to play their games. If you want to play on LIVE, no hacked Firmware. This is why this is useless, you'd have to buy a second 360 to connect to the internet. Since this is firmware its not like you can just buy a second HD and switch it out either.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6inaccurate.... far from useless. there will be proof soon too.
- yorxs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I would say this hack is far from worthless. It is totally conceivable that a company(s) with the right tools could pre mod xboxes and sell them to those without the tools.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Definatly not useless. even if no one uses this hack it will atleast get more and more ppl to start working on hacking it. this is just the first step to a mod chip allowing homebrew apps.
- oxymoron69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4inaccurate or lame, it's all MS FUD.
- mikal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6(What dopelogic ckpcw just said. Should be possible to delete my own message within the three minute limit)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14me and my little brother do more complex modding all the time, the mod isn't "useless" it's just restricted to people with the equipment (check) and skills (check)
- lagnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Source of interview http://digg.com/gaming/Xbox_360_firmware_hacker_interviewed_about_technical_implications
digg-- - cduquette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The only thing is these preprogrammed flash chips still have to include your drive's unique identification number to run (that's what I got out of it reading their xbox-hacker.com discussions). Through Live Microsoft has the capability to reflash the drive at any time and deny users with the mod.
- serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5In case you didn't know, hacking the dvd-rom firmware is different than hacking the system firmware (which Live checks). Hence, unlike the Xbox1, your DVD-R backups will play flawlessly on Live.
- xboxing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yup. This hack is far from useless, Team Xecuter does not dissapoint and they WILL deliver when they release their firmware hack solution for "the general public". I cannot digg this article though, since that would mean I agree with it's subject, which I don't.
- topnotchnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the xbox360 would not have half of the features it currently has if it wasnt for the mod scene on the first xbox
whos stealing from who? - gabebear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If the article is correct and Xecuter can already read and write 360 DVD ROM firmwares with a standard PC, then it shouldn't take them long to make this hack ready for the masses and nearly undetectable.
cloning the drives unique key shouldn't be any problem, and the firmware contains the code to read/write the firmware so moding it to report a successful flash when it did nothing would be simple. I think I would just always have the drive report an unsuccessful flash, that way you can just ship it back to MS as a defective drive. - kevwiener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ive got the firmware here for the hitachi drive anyone want it then email me i promise that this is the real ***** sources are sevret but i will send it no problems if anyone wants it.
kevwiener - NghtShd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The problem with MS updating its dashboard to detect a modified drive is that they have to depend on that modified drive giving itself away. Unlike modified firmware running in the Xbox itself, the CPU can't directly read the DVD drive's firmware. It would need to read the drive's ROM/RAM contents, which the drive may not truthfully divulge, and hash that or get some other response from a command that indicates hacked firmware. Otherwise, there may be some other way they could go about detecting recordable media. Either way, they are ultimately depending on a trustworthy response from a drive which may or may not be trustworthy.

we can talk there - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -4/+3If you want up-to-date info, go to http://xboxhacker.net.. mind you, it can be very technical there, but you should find out what you need to if you're interested in the developments. Don't resort to digg for stories like this, since this isn't a dedicated XBox hacking / homebrew scene, as XBH.net and XBox-Scene.com are.

"They managed to not only read (like SeventhSon did - more info), but also write the DVD firmware from a PC!"
no, this hack isnt useless, but this article is.
no digg and reported. - rufo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Yes, it is useless.
I don't give a flying frak about backups. I don't want to steal 360 games; I want to be able to play on Live with my friends.
What I do care about, and would even buy a second 360 for, is homebrew. Xbox Media Center 360 would be killer, not to mention all the other great homebrew out there, and Linux wouldn't be a bad thing either.
There may be a very small subset of decent use for the DVD firmware hack, but the majority will use it for piracy. - Slimer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2NO this man being quoted in the article is wrong. he has lost faith in the reason that he has hacked hte XBOX
All devices that have been created by man are motivated by the men that have created them. Once that information is out there, it will be hacked. It is inevitable. MICROSOFT DID NOT CREATE THE XBOX. The designers that have struggled their entire lives to learn and think how to engineer and make the best game station taht they could created the xbox. There will be people, curious people, unemployed people, as a societal state, that will reverse engineer, analyse and deconstruct the xbox.
This may mean that microsoft is the best group of people in AMERICAN SOCIETY to create an xbox.YOU may think that this means that hacking it is fruitless and is an insult to those men. IT is a testament to it.

Find a new WEBSITE, create one for youself. TELL ME NOT TO USE IT - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1that site is retarded as well as the majority of the people who comment there. Anyone who thinks that you are stealing from microsoft needs to be shot in the face. They have ***** you in the ass over and over and over again and people dont even realize it. No one reads anything either, if you go to the xecuter site they even say that it will be simply flashing the DVDROM, not a ***** chip. Fairly simple plug, flash, and play. It would take a novice 20 minutes tops to do it. No soldering, no ***** anything up.
