- SfOwnsLa, on 10/12/2007, -8/+78You would think they would fix it after a 1 yr+ of complaints
- mrwiggles123, on 10/12/2007, -13/+714th xbox 360 here
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -21/+76I went through 3 Xbox 360s and like hell if I was going to go through a fourth one.
I'm on a launch PS3 that has gone through just about every Blu-Ray (thanks to BlockBuster Total Access).
You know something is wrong with Microsoft when my Original NES still works great and grey GameBoy - G_Raph, on 10/12/2007, -28/+81still on first xbox 360 here...and i have had it since launch.
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+58The red lights are much brighter and they come up faster, no need to wait.
- topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -49/+100Thats why I got a PS3... I've been folding since 1.6 update and I still havent had any problems. I for one am glad Sony took the extra time to perfect the hardware. Now they just need to make it lowered price.
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+56The 360 doesn't have a 100% rate of failure? That IS weird.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+55The thing uses 160W of power. Only 15% of that power is consumed by the power supply. The rest of the power goes straight into the console and is turned into heat.
So are you surprised it gets hot?
PS3 gets hot for the same reasons (even more so, since its power supply is internal).
But the PS3 doesn't break like the 360 does. It is possible to make a console that takes 160W of power and make it reliable. MS has failed to do so. - aweraw, on 10/12/2007, -5/+51I'd say the disc scratching problem is Microsoft's...
(apologies to anti-Wii fanatics)
For instance, this past weekend, my Wii was sent flying across my lounge room by my dog (had a GC controller plugged in, and he ran straight through the cable when someone knocked on my door). It flew literally 4 meters through the air (from vertical orientation), and bounced twice before coming to a halt on the floor.....
I was playing Baten Kaitos at the time, and to my astonishment, the Wii did not skip a beat. The game just kept on playing - the sound didn't even skip! I kept on playing for a few more hours (after picking it up of course), and after that checked that the disc was still OK - not a spot.
My point is, that you can move the Wii while the disc inside is spinning and the discs do not scratch. If the problem was one of pure physics, I would have expected my Wii to massacre my Baten Kaitos disc when is was sent sailing through the air, since the disc drives in both the Wii and X360 spin at roughly the same speed...
If the Wii disc drive can take that kind of punishment, I really don't see why the X360 so readily eats discs when faced with substantially less disturbance... The only explanation I can come up with is that the Xbox360's disc drive is a piece of over priced crap, which means that yes, the problem is with Microsoft - they just relinquished responsibility for it to you (the end user) in the shrink-wrap license. - BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48@ruckusnutz:
Oh I see what you did there. You clever little rascal. - mrwiggles123, on 10/12/2007, -14/+56First 360, launch 360 - couldn't connect to xbox live (lasted 2~ months)
second 360, refirb - 3 rings (lasted 9 months) obviously played a bit, about 1 hour per day
3rd 360, refrib - 3 rings (lasted 2 days) (2 god damn days after i got it back 3 weeks to ship it out, repair, and get it back)
4th 360, on the way back from repair - SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -19/+60At least the PS3 helps cure cancer ....the Xbox360 still having a hard time killing off its own disease ...the Red Ring of Death.
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40"If I remember correctly, the failure rate for the Xbox 360 was around the average for electronics, so what was their first product that failed at a higher than normal rate?"
How many people do you hear on Digg complaining about bricked PS3s or Wiis? Or digital cameras? or ipods?
Average for electronics my ASS. - LiquidChimera, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42Not yet being a 360 owner, I haven't kept up with these issues. How can there be all these over heating problems with the DC adapter on the outside? Where is all this excess heat coming from?
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -6/+41@ brokenempires
dude, shut up. 360's fail, that's what they do regardless of the setup. My 360 is in an entertainment center but with PLENTY of space behind it and I've had two 360's give me the ring of death, and neither had anything to do with marathon gaming sessions or none of that. They just kinda made them like crap. - MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Your 360 works fine except you need an exterior fan blowing in it.........how is that working fine?
- filemeaway, on 10/12/2007, -7/+40@brokenempires
Can you explain your stupid comment(s)? Do you work for Microsoft, or are you just dumb? Why are you bent on ceaselessly badgering people who legitimately comment on this story? How long do you plan to be a *****? Every day? How many times of the week? - drn666, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35It's not a heat issue, it's a chip issue. Specifically, the problem seems to be due to the GPU (Xenos) or an associated chip (like the ANA scaler) coming loose on the motherboard. The evolution of a 360 death is as follows:
1. System works great.
2. One day, you turn the system on and you get the "screen door" effect on the graphics - uniform lines or distortions through the screen and the brighter colors are distorted. The system still works and the game still plays otherwise. You can generally fix this by turning the machine off and turning it back on.
3. Generally, within 2 or 3 weeks of this first happening, the system will start locking up mid game, making it useless.
4. If you persist in trying to use the system, eventually it will fail to even boot into a game or the dashboard, instead just giving 3 red lights.
Some people don't even get to watch the system go through this... it just skips to 3 red lights.
Bottom line, for all the "you must not be cooling it properly" people out there - it's nice you either don't use your system that much or have gotten very, very lucky, but the 360 is defective by design (despite the fact that I love the console when it works properly) and Microsoft needs to 'fess up and fix the problem. I've owned a dozen game consoles in my life and have never had any problems with any of them. I had a launch PS2 and never experienced the "can't read disc" issue. I had a 1.3 XBox and never had a problem.
On the other hand, I'm currently on my 5th 360 and while so far so good (knock on wood), it will eventually fail.
And for the record, it's plugged into a monster power processor (clean, surge and brown-out free power) and is sitting on -top- of my entertainment unit, with open access to the air conditioned room air on all sides but the down side. The power supply is positioned behind the system, in an open area, with one side raised so only a razors edge of the supply is touching the ground. All of my 360's have been treated the same way, and it's never saved any of them from failure.
Anecdotally, every time i've never had to replace a 360, Microsoft has -instantly- agreed to take it back. No "what have you done to destroy 4 consoles?". No "that shouldn't be". Just "we'll send you a box". Microsoft knows full well the failure rate is higher than normal and they're at least being good about taking care of us... but this doesn't excuse it. - CraigCarlyle, on 10/12/2007, -20/+51"Seriously Microsoft, did you completely get rid of your QA department?"
Microsoft had a QA department? - DlGG, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40At least the Ring of Death looks cooler with the black.

btw I still have my launch console here. - InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33Well I've had mine since launch and It just had a problem. So how are we going to settle this?
- longhair, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33I have been without my 360 since April 13th (Friday the 13th). I got the red rings of death for the second time in 13 months. I'm really sad to hear it's still happening. My snes still works like it did day one. My gameboy, genesis, n64, gamecube, dreamcast and gba too. My Atari and nes work fine with a little power button manipulation, and of course blowing into the cartridge.

The PS3 story you refer to is this:

And the confirnation of it being a scam is here:

So now you can get yourself that PS3 without fear of losing your house ;) - fujiman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Toast1185:
Your theory fails on several levels. I apologize in advance for SHOUTING, but I'm tired of this argument, and I really need to put some of this nonsense to rest.
"I really think that someone on their third or fourth xbox is doing something wrong. "
If you mean plug it in and connect to the T.V., then yes. I am guilty as charged. Other than that, it was sitting alone, on top of the TV cabinet with tons of ventilation, and nothing touching it. I never moved it (until it RROD'd, then I had to send it back to MS.
"Microsoft states the defection rate of the 360 at 3%"
And my mother thinks I'm the greatest guy in the world. What's your point?
"but let's say it is higher, at 5%. That means someone has a 5% chance of getting a defective console. When they buy/get a replacement, they now have a 2.5% chance of having their 2 units be defective. When they buy the third, they now have a 1.25% chance of having all three be defective. By the time they need to get a fourth 360, they should consider buying some lottery tickets, because they have a knack for hitting the long shots."
You assume that the poor dope in question actually buys a NEW console every time the old 360 breaks. Let me explain how it works: MS takes your old console in for repair. It then grabs someone else's BROKEN console from the pile in Texas, does some shoddy QA on it, and then mails it to you. Let this sink in for a bit. Microsoft:
1. Is giving you a console that has ALREADY FAILED.
2. Is INCREASING your chances of a bad console every time they send you a refurbished unit.
3. Because the problems are a DESIGN FLAW which isn't fixed in Texas, they're really not doing you any favors
So every time you send a console in to MS, they add a bullet to the chamber of the revolver you're playing russian roulette with.
I had 3 360s before I finally sold it all on ebay. This isn't rocket science. Microsoft needs to fix their problems, and I had hoped the "Elite" would address something of value. They did not. There is no doubt in my mind that the Sony and Nintendo products have superior design and craftmanship. I don't blame the Japanese for shunning the 360 based on the crappy quality of the hardware alone. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25The sexy black color and the integrity of HDMI video means that Elite 360 is a much more exquisite brick than a regular 360.
- tc811, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22is it because the 360 is a tray-loading device, while the Wii is slot-loading? Just a thought, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
- G_Raph, on 10/12/2007, -16/+34its pretty easy to build a wii when you use gamecube parts.
- iRoy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22LOL. Gotta love my ps3, it did cost me an arm and a leg but at least I can leave it on overnight while it tries to find a cure for cancer and not have to worry about it melting.
Say what you want about Sony and their... questionable... business practices, at least their products don't suck ass.
I find it hilarious that so many people here talk about going through 3-4 360's easily. For Christ sake people don't you know the saying... Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. You shouldn't get fooled 4 ***** times in a row, if the ***** breaks then it's a bad product, move on and stop buying ***** from Microsoft already! - digguh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19@ #c6411098
My Viva Pinata scratched without me moving the console. I was playing, then the game froze and then I heard the sound of the disc scratching as it spun around. - jasmus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Hard to take you seriously with that spam in your signature....
- Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Apparently you didn't hear about Wii dying from WiiConnect24.
http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24595
And yes, I have a Wii and ran into this problem. Took two weeks to get my Wii back (cost Nintendo $95 CAN). I think they gave me a refurbished one. - ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30Because it is a good console, quality issues aside.
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18"So, the video seems to show a 360 unable to play a disc and that's it. We're not shown whether the disc is in good shape or not. There are no red lights of death. Just a little noise that seems to be somewhat amplified and sounds like a DVDROM trying to read a bad disc."
Sounds like someone's denial is louder and more persistent than the bevy of problems the 360 has produced. - jasmus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I bought an xbox360 2 days ago, this is non-fiction horror for me. I spent close to $1000au on the system and games, and I'll tell you, I'd be a little more than pissed if it bricked anytime soon. I have a wood-grain Atari 2600 that still works fine, I expect even a new, high tech system to last at least a year or two.
- elqboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The same garbage in a different can
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Reporting the news isn't being a fanboy. Saying that Sony has a superior product with the PS3... well, that might be bordering on fanboyism.
But it's true.
PS. I guess I'm a fanboy. - regen, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18I've sent my original 360 off for repairs 4 times this year (thankfully under warranty). There's definitely a serious problem with them, I just want it to work!
- thirtysixbelow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Read some of the comments before you post so you don't post the same joke for the 3rd time.
- uncleboogie, on 10/12/2007, -18/+28What the *****? A video of a $5 BK game that won't load. Is this supposed to be some kind of proof that the 360 elite is a piece of *****? God I love the internets.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Software and Live. One is kinda drying up and the other, well, it will remain strong. When the other console gets the big games out later this year things may change.
- roxya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"My xbox 360 is 4 months old and running fine. It locked up twice"
lol. - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11im sorry. i own both a xbox360 and a ps3. my launch ps3 has worked near flawlessly. my [nov2006] xbox360 freezes or refuses to play a disc at least once a week. the other console issues are no where near as bad.
there have been many complaints about the ps3. outside of the price most of the issues have been fixed. none required sending in my console. most of the users complaining about the ps3 are people that have not touched one outside of a best buy/ walmart/ game store kiosk. those that have had the chance to sit down and play the console have no real problems with it; they just want more games available to play. if you compare the two consoles from a strictly hardware quality perspective, the xbox360 will lose... easily.
the collective complaining about the xbox360 generally comes from xbox360 owners; not owners of competing consoles. even if you look at the above comments. some of the largest xbox supporters even have to admit that they have had to send their console in at least once. this is microsoft's loyal fanbase that are finding complaint.
i vote with my money. microsoft already has mine, but i still dont think the xbox360 is the most solid product. i have not had any /crippling/ issues with my xbox360, but you have to feel some form of sympathy for those that have gone through such issues with a company that is not willing to admit or address their problems. four/ five consoles in a years time??!?!? the random freezes and glitches are annoying enough for me.
the extended warranty is not an example of good customer service. they still fail to admit there is an issue. the extended warranty is their way of saying "no class action lawsuits, please". a company that cares either admits their mistakes and/or fixes the problem. if you can dedicate the r&d to create a new updated model, the least you can do is fix at least one of the major complaints. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Yeah. My friend said that.
He says "I know 9 people (including myself) that have 360s, and only you've had yours die. What's the big deal?"
Well, he did say it until a week ago, when his 360 died. - mustard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Having recently bought both consoles, I can say with absolute certainty that the PS3 is built better. The Xbox sounds like a Solid-fuel booster rocket. The PS3 sounds like a breeze on a sunny day.
Microsoft managed to make a sweet piece of equipment, but cut a lot of corners on quality/time just so they could get to market before Sony. Which seemed to be successful, in that they have quite a large installed userbase. But I think once the PS3 game library/online service gets up to speed, it will even things out quite nicely.
I have had my 360 less than a week, and I've already searched around for fan mods to cut down on the racket, warranty be damned.
Also, I originally gagged when I saw the price of the PS3(£400), but after buying a 360(£290), wi-fi adapter and a one-year live subscription (£60+£40), the prices were almost identical. If I decided to buy the controller recharge kit, they would be identical. By this time next year, the xbox will have cost more. Food for thought.
Also, MS is microtransactioning the balls out of everything. Whether Sony start doing it to the same degree remains to be seen, but I certainly hope not. Having to pay extra on top of a full priced game to unlock content that is on the damn disc already is tantamount to robbery. The game PLUS all the addons should be no higher than the price of a full-priced game. Work backwards from this to get the retail price.
Not a fanboy, I like consoles in general. - UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Why is it seemingly impossible for some people to take proper, in-focus macro pictures? Besides, it looks like the pictures were taken on a digital camera so if the picture is out of focus you can just take another one. How is that so freaking difficult? And why would you post out-of-focus pictures to a message board in the first place?
I appreciate the information and the effort, but the lack of attention to detail just boggles my mind. - sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"And yes, you read through forums and reviews of users with problems with the 360 and I GUARANTEE you will find over a 1000's of people having problems with it."
Well I've also read on these forums that since 10million 360's sold, 3% failure rate yields 300,000 broken 360's. So even with a 3% failure rate you would potentially have hundreds of thousands of irate people on forums. Also doesn't help that MS recirculates refurbished 360's as replacements, and sometimes people with multiple failed 360's reported success after changing the environment around the 360 (like changing the power brick). Not saying 360 failures are no big deal or that they don't suck, but it's best to put numbers into perspective. I still think 3% failure is too high, though, and repeat fail rate appears to be obscenely high. - PhillAholic, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15When's the last time you head any system sound like that while reading a disc? Sounded like something was rubbing against something else it shouldn't be to me.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -15/+21Good thing they increased the warranty.
