- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+61Wow really? You didn't find these cool?
* HD 1080p video mode support over VGA and component cables.
* Stream WMV video from a Windows PC (yay no more media center needed!)
* Play video from CD or DVD data discs.
I know it's mostly streaming video, but thats a huge step IMHO. And I agree, bring on the Divx and Xvid support! At least my Oppo DVD player will play Divx/Xvid, so I suppose it doesn't really matter. - SQUIDwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41I like the faster enumeration of Xbox Live Arcade games. It's getting to the point where it takes much to long to load the list now that I have 20 or so games. I also like the updated DVD controls and option to turn off XBL notifications during a movie. And HD-DVD support is pretty swanky. :-)
Glad to see Microsoft is taking the Apple approach to it's 360 OS: Incremental updates that enhance the experience in subtle ways - alecks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31No, it seems more like the "We promised a fall and a spring update per year" and it's Fall!
- morgrar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25I love Xbox360. Sony definitely has competition this time around, and that's a good thing.
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25I've been begging for this feature since day one. When I have the girlfriend over and pop in a movie, I shouldn't have to change any settings to enjoy the movie and not be disturbed when "BigSchlong69 is now online".
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29chris:
1080p != digital
nowhere did the article say 'digital 1080p' - GeneralFailure0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Yeah, the upcoming release of the PS3 is really pressuring Microsoft to appease the people who ALREADY bought their console. Like the guy above me said, it's just a fall update.
- dreaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Finally, video streaming, took them long enough. Now if only we could have DivX or XVid like on the first xbox...
- Sababaaa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Yeah I wonder about how transcode will work with this new streaming option as well... I wish I had media center, but I refuse to buy a new PC until vista comes out do to the mystery surrounding cable card support.
And Chris, you're getting dug down because your comment does nothing constructive for the conversation at hand, nor does it have anything to do with the original comment you replied to. Stop trying to start flame wars, and you wont be dug down. 1080p is 1080p, wether its digital or analogue. - JustEvk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I'm happy I won't have to see "_____ is online" repeatedly while watching movies now. Goodness gracious.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Why don't you just sign off XBL?
- toasty168, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Wonder if you can use transcode to stream different formats (divx) like you can on Media Center?
- elShaggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12yea who wants a hot powersupply inside their sleek console, /looks at clunky PS3 w/ internal power supply.
- FetalSage, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Great list :D
- CanadianGeese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Besides the obvious streaming updates and 1080p capabilities, my favorite changes are...
-Set up automatic downloads of newly released Xbox Live Arcade trial games.
-Lightning-fast enumeration and listing of all Xbox LiveĀ® Arcade games on the console.
-Optionally disable notifications from Xbox Live while watching DVD movies.
-Screen saver now becomes active when videos are paused.
-Improved video playback while downloading from Xbox Live.
-Improved support for games to better handle host migration in multi-player matches.
-Improved Xbox Live Vision camera support for changing room lighting while zooming.
-Improved UI performance in Media Center Extender
-Improved background download notifications when downloading many small items from Xbox Live.
-Improved voice chat quality in Xbox Dashboard and in-game chats.
-Added ability to clear space from storage devices in download areas.
-Improved look and feel in Xbox Live Marketplace and Xbox Live Arcade areas.
-Removed system message at the start of new downloads. Messages will be displayed for completed items.
I still have questions about how some of the above-mentioned changes will look and feel, but I'm still excited about the possibilities.
These dashboard updates are becoming a really anticipated thing for me. The last dashboard update was awesome, and this one seems to be following in it's footsteps. - cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Dude, most people would rather have that brick than an internally built solution. I mean come on that joke wasn't even funny.
- 3leggedHorse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10 Divx/Xvid support would be nice, then i can free up a socket by selling my DVD player.
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wish they would allow you to delete games from your Played Games list. I've rented some games and played Xbox Arcade demos and never got any achievements. I have mild OCD and I don't like the clutter!
- pksynths, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Play video from CD or DVD data discs."
About freaking time! I was just bitching about that last week. - DaysInTheDark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It is true 1080p, just not digital. Why are you saying 'true digital'? It's either digital or it's not. The problem is that most HDTVs do not support 1080p via a component connection.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How about not quitting the game and going back to the dashboard when the disc is dirty and you eject it? Why the hell can't we eject it and then clean the damn disc and put it back in without restarting the game?
- Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6He probably really does means 16:10, it is pretty common.
And they make widescreen monitors ;) I am using a 16:10 20.1" monitor right now. - rubberjabber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's a step in the right direction :)
I'm always welcoming newer features as it keeps the hardware fresh. - aspec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Why not add 16 x 10 resolutions? I really like playing on my monitor, the TV is just too big for some games.
- Exhaust, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@Chriskzoo
Thanks for pointing out that obvious and barely useful piece of information. You're getting digged down because no one cares. Some DRM and a microscopic difference in picture quality isn't going to garner you any mods up. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Cheating? You could replace the disc with art assets like invisible walls.
- BHRecon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@zMastaa
1280x1024 isn't 4:3 its 5:4 - kolumn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I haven't tried it myself yet, but I've heard that you can use this program/plug-in called "Transcode 360" to stream all kinds of unsupported video formats to your 360, (which get transcoded in real time). I'm actually going to give it a shot this afternoon... hope it works!
http://runtime360.com/projects/transcode-360/ - LiquidTim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What video files does the 360 support? Just .WMV?
- SQUIDwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7And, I should add, implement new and welcome features as well as fix bugs and such. Though in retrospect, it's almost required for something with a limited lifespan.
- eldentistfuturo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wonder if it will kill the firmware hacks.
- modestmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It seems like people who want a PS3 see it's power configuration as a bonus.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's a hell of a big update.
Nice to see Microsoft constantly improving Live!. - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Only if its WMV (not sure on the other formats supported).
- xportz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They are?? Anyone have a link to a source?
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I for one hope all the modders get perm banned from XBL and their systems fried, but that's just me
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@aprocter - Should have been more specific - I meant you can stream stuff off the Zune over WiFi...no need to connect it to the 360.
- WPFever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why do you need a browser on a console anyways, i guarantee theres a pc with internet in a room close by.
- Jejagua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been using Transcode 360 for months and it is great. It's best to not use it over wireless though.
- DeepFreezed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3very impressive
thats is what you call support. - pseudo.hero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Great list of updates to the currently sometimes confusing dashboard layout. Now if they would only allow you to install your own hard drive instead of using the systems 20 gig...
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Keyboards have worked since Day one, but thanks to FFXI and other games that use the Keyboard a lot we get more support so Xbox 360 works better with a keyboard.
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can use it in the dashboard, for things like signing up for Live
- JGailor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5These things are all awesome, but in conjunction with this release they should have gone for the gold and released a digital cable. HDMI, DVI... I don't care.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's mostly for messaging. I'm sure Phantasy Star would most benefit from it.
- aprocter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Streaming, yes
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"It would re-check the disc for legitimacy again, just like the PS2 does."
Which doesn't do that. - pidge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Play video from storage devices such as USB flash drives, Xbox 360 Memory Units, etc."
I hope this includes DVR-MS from an external drive. - zMastaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Improved UI performance in Media Center Extender - No more waiting 5 mins for the scroller to go up after pressing up on the control pad???
Improved CapsLock behavior for USB keyboards. - CapsLock now means CapLocks?? it use to sometimes mix :S like when the keyboard shows it as on, the 360 has it off
No update on using the keyboard with the Media Center to browse???? - themadhatter444, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use my Logitech G15 on it no problem. Phantasy Star Universe is so much more streamlined when you don't have to use the software keyboard thing. Great feature.
