- althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2quite honestly, 95% of the people buying a 360 already have an original xbox, so why in the world should backwards compatibility be such a big freakin deal. This point goes for sony too.
Just don't unplug the old system for crying out loud and you are backwards compatible with all the games! sheeesh some selling points for these systems seem to have a fabricated value when you think about the reality of everyones console buying situations. - johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hm. I don't see any Splinter Cell, and I don't see any Chronicles of Riddick, and I don't see Panzer Dragoon Orta, or Steel Battalion - there seems to be quite a few titles missing. Granted, I'm surprised there are this many Xbox games (and to the fanboys, I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm being serious) - but some of the ones I really care about aren't on the list.
The line "more than 200 already" - following the other link at http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm, I found this:
Note: A software emulator is required for each original Xbox game you play on your Xbox 360™ console. Please check back for more details as we approach the launch date.
So this tells us it's a very specific Virtual-PC-ish kind of thing, probably downloaded through Live. I'll give them points for trying, but this isn't quite "backwards compability" I was looking forward to.
Still, credit where credit it due: they've met the backwards compatibility issue, and as long as they continue with all possible Xbox games, then I might consider getting the system when the price drops below $300-ish. - hold_steady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"LMAO nobody played these games except you. the only saving grace for the 360 is Halo 3 maybe ...."
How can you say that? Tons of people play those games, SC is one of the most successful franchises on the XBOX and every release always amazes people with spectacular graphics, but also the innovative gameplay, especially the multiplayer modes. Attention XB Nerd! there are other genres of games besides HALO and HALO2 you should try some of em. - WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1look, a reply feature!

"LMAO nobody played these games except you. the only saving grace for the 360 is Halo 3 maybe ...."
You've never played Splinter cell? You're the only one who has never played that game. - kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a lot of titles already. I am sure that list will continue to grow, and I wouldn't be surprised if all the games end up being supported. Going from an x86 to PPC cpu and being able to emulate that many games is a difficult task amnd requires great software engineers. Props to MS.
What I'm wondering now is how we are going to compile Homebrew apps for the XBOX 360 with an x86 CPU. I believe most of the XBOX modding community uses x86 CPU's. Looks like the XBOX modding community may be better off using PPC Macs. I will need XBOX Media Center on my 360. XBMC is the *****! Can't live without. - aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Sirocco
Of course it won't be available for *every* title. But they're trying to come close. - reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They had to emulate every game one by one becuase they switched GPUs from Nvidia to ATI. A harddrive is required to play BC titles because you have to have the software (each is about 5 megs) to do it.
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Who gives an f**k about backwards compatibility? And who gives a f**k about the Xbox 360? The answer to both: Nobody. Backwards compatibility is just a way to get you to buy the console with the false illusion that your getting two consoles in one. Did any of you play PS1 games on your PS2 after the first month or two? When the available titles grew to a large enough level for you to move on. This HD thing is so overrated, I'm not sure about in the States, but here in the UK I don't know anybody with a HD TV, people are paying for something they will never use."
Sure people will play 360 games first when the console releases, but what about later when you want to experience Halo in HD. You gotta put your brain to work, and yes there are other countries in the world besides UK, If HD isn't there, that's too bad, you're missing out, because here in the US, there is HDTV content, and some people will gladly take advantage of it, like me. Backwards Compatibility is huge to any console. So go whine somewhere else if you can't play your games on next gen. consoles. - bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1backwards compatibility is a BIG FREAKIN DEAL because I can
a) Sell the old xbox.
b) don't have to buy a new xbox because it broke
c) I can have an xbox in one room and a 360 in another.
d) I can have an xbox in my summer home and a 360 in my winter home
e) I can give the old xbox to a friend.
how come there are still idiots that don't get Backwards compatibility? what world are they from? Have they never played a PS anything?
Also, No Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball??? - HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1imtigger2 - You don't have to buy another Live account if you wish to play on live on your old Xbox and on your 360. You just can't play on both machines at the same time with the same account, just like the current Xbox.
- BigDog969, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Xbox.com: Will there be any benefits to playing original Xbox games on my Xbox 360 console?
Todd: Absolutely. One of the great things about gaming on Xbox 360 is the satisfaction of knowing that every game will be playable in high definition. We are now proud to reveal that this extends to the original Xbox games as well. Every original Xbox game will be upscaled to 720p and 1080i, and will take advantage of Xbox 360’s anti-aliasing capabilities, delivering a picture that is clearer and crisper than anything available on Xbox. - StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Umm..... you people do realize that PS1 games are ALSO emulated on the PS2, right? This is how all backwards compatibility works. The fact that the PS2 can do it is because it is far more advanced over the PS1 than the Xbox 360 is over the Xbox.
But don't worry. PS3 will be just as tough with the PS2 games."
Wrong, wrong, wrong. The PS2's backwards compatibility was due to the fact that the PS2's I/O controller WAS the PS1's processor. It just used that. (I could be wrong on this, but I think the 2 chips used the same instruction set anyway, so even if they'd used the PS2's processor it wouldn't have been emulated, only simulated.) Only a bit of hardware had to be emulated.
The PS3 similarly incorporates the PS2's processors in its innards, and so the PS2 will not be emulated either. I haven't heard anything about its PS1 compatibility, but I suspect that they're either still using that proc for the I/O, or it will be emulated.
As far as I know NO console has been powerful enough to truly emulate a system only 1 generation prior, which is why the emulators for 360 are so limited. - 703_KN33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my excitement for the 360 is fading :(
- eclipxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A lot of you guys complaining about missing your favorite games should read the FAQs. The reason there are a lot of crappy games (Barbie, Catwoman, etc) is because during testing of an emulation profile for one game, they found the same profile works well with other games.
The entire intent (from the FAQ) is to support EVERY Xbox game, new and old. Yes, you will need to update your profiles which you can do for free over Live, download a CD from the Xbox site or have shipped to you (all this info in the FAQ).
From my understanding there is just a SINGLE emulation core that runs on the 360 that emulates the original XBox's functionality. The additional game profiles are used for configuration and patching of code that needs to be changed for specific functionality not implemented. Very smart move by MS and possibly a great entry for soft-modding.
On top of that, we get 720p and FSAA for ALL emulated titles... I'm psyched. - Sinan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0[quite honestly, 95% of the people buying a 360 already have an original xbox, so why in the world should backwards compatibility be such a big freakin deal. This point goes for sony too.

well said there... - suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft sucks. I don't want to have multiple consoles in my living room, nor do I want to play old games through an "emulator" that is going to be inefficient and slow. This is why I don't own an XBOX. If I was an XBOX owner I'd be pissed that it's such a pain to play all my old games. And the reason the new games aren't on the list is probably because they can't run through the slow emulator.
yea because this emulator is so slow it can only run halo 2, an xbox game, in 720p with antialiasing.... yea so maybe you can go crawl back under your bridge, troll. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only game I want to play is Panzer Dragoon Orta...
... No digg. - ThomasAnderson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know, the doa series is my second favorite. But no worries, I have an xbox and all the games in the series and I don't plan on selling it. If some one does sell their xbox it better be for good reason, because I have over a hundred games that have been saved on that bad boys HD.
- merdeisel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why is everyone so worried about this... aventually all the games will probibly be on this list... when it comes to the 360 im more interested in the NEW GAMES... just got a 42" lcd hdtv... cant wait to play Dead or Alive 4, Condemned, PGR3, and NBA2k6.
- number8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where's DOAX?!?! I wanna see boobies in Hi-Def!11!!one!
- AceJetMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More games WILL be added to the list over time so you can finally throw away your old xbox to make space for your studio apartment.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0P.S., I don't have the original Xbox. Hopefully it'll drop to 50 dollars or something more affordable than 130.
- Cyrus89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe all the games i own are backwards-compatible
- Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where is my:
1) Burnout?
2) Where is it?
Seriously, I'm beginning not to like the whole idea of XBox emulation on the X360. So many titles axed. I hope this list grows...
At least Pump It Up still works. *CoughDDRripoffCough* - kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I won't be unplugging my XBOX until I can play my backups on my 360. I lost all my Authentic XBOX dvd's. All I own are backups.
- AirCanada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what?! wheres x-men legends 2?
- kida101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Yup, because HD is something that should be put on the backburner for awhile. Nobody cares about HD...give it five or ten years before worrying about that one, Nintendo. < /end sarcasm >"
The revolution will have HD graphics dummy and the games will run a whole lot smoother and look as good or better than the 360. By that time the graphics on the 360 surpass that of a gaming PC, PS3 will be ***** on everything the 360 comes out. Microsoft's only hope to survive is Halo 3, aka the only reason to buy a 360 instead of a PC which plays nearly all the games slated for the 360 launch. Don't think the new xbox live will save them either, since they're basically gearing it for what they love best, money money money, spend money on stupid worthless stuff. New maps? Dish out another 20 please. New content? 360 microsoft online marketplace points please. I spent 5 bucks to change my avatar, isn't that cool?
The revloution on the other hand offers a completely NEW experince for gamers as well as reinveting the classic games that essentially created console gaming and dubbed the original gamers "fanboys" or whatever you want to call people who still play Nintendo and look forward to the new Zelda game. The gameplay on Revolution will be unique and different for each game and the response of the controls for FPS will be dynamic, innovative and precise and will be like no other gaming experince out there. Remember Nintendo, they created the analog stick, they created wireless controllers they're going to deliver a death blow to the next-gen wars by creating the ultimate in immersive gameplay.
But go ahead, spend your 600 dollars on the 360. I mean it is the same as a PC, but who cares. It connects to your "HD" TV and gets you on the Microsoft marketplace. Support Microsoft, they care about the consumer. (end sarcasm, jackass) - Presentlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate to be a critic but...no ARMED AND DANGEROUS? That was the funniest game I have ever played.
- s-m-a-c-k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kida, why do I keep hearing the argument about a company not caring about the consumer, at least MS has never loaded DRM software that fuxxor your system... any event, the belief that there is a kindly old man at the top of a company's food chain actually gives two ***** about a consumer is fasle... they don't freakin care, none of 'em...
- icheat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0at least its 200+ titles
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0me want Mechassault 2, now microsoft! fix it, now Grah!
- burrito4891, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0weeek, no splinter cell, oddworld stranger's wrath, and doom 3? that sucks I cant play those on 360, but never intended that xbox 1/2 anyway.

Actually I believe that the backwards compatibility is provided by a chip in the PS2 called the IOP (I/O Processor) it's an R3000 chip the same as the PS1's original CPU. In effect, the PS2 contains a PS1 and does NOT emulate it. - TheMadMonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want backwards compatability because at some point, my Xbox will stop working, and there are some games I'd still like to play.
I also guess you have to be on Live to get the emulation software?; nice little trick there by MS to make people have to join their service if they want to play their old games. :( - massageman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who cares play em on your old xbox i just played 360 at walmart and im very impressed with the graphics and lighiting in the games i cant wait to get mine
- gODfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Backwards compatibility is important for a cheap bastard like me.
And when i play games i don't feel like having 2 consoles, 1 is enough thank you very much...Allot of good games are not on the list. Aswell i guess i'll just have to wait for the ps3 maybe by then the x-box360 will be half price or something. Micro$oft made to deceive, Sheeesh - kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This is a total joke. Forcing people to buy an upgrade just to get something that was promised is typical MS behavior. And even then it won't be available for every title."
What is this "typical MS behavior" you speak of, dear fanboy?
Microsoft has been saying you'd need a hard drive to run the BC games. They've also been saying, for months, that not all games will initally be able to run on the 360. - Kalek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"At least Pump It Up still works. *CoughDDRripoffCough*"
I think PIU was first...Its too close between the two to really tell though...
/DDRFanboyness
Anyway, the majority of the titles I own are on there, and I'm sure the rest will come soon. - BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm still waiting on:
Doom 3 (LCE)
Midtown Madness 3
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
To be backwards compatible. : - rickst13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, besides Halo, none of the games I own are on this list. JSRF, Sega GT, Gunvalkyrie, DOA Ultimate, Panzer Dragoon Orta....
- teitoku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice list, considering a few months ago we were arguing about whether or not this little xbox-compatibility extra would even be included at all.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Backwards compatibility is important because people want better graphics?
- hateraide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1{Microsoft sucks. First, if you are such a Microsoft & XBOX hater, why are you reading this post? Second, how do you know the emulator is slow? Do you work for Microsoft? Even PS games are emulated & not all are BC. They said more are coming, so why not wait until they say they are done to hate?
Damn & I'm supposed to be sippin on the hater-aide. - Xecuter2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if all games will work 100%, emulating proprietary Nvidia effects can't be easy...
An Xbox and Xbox 360 system link LAN would be cool. If you and a friend upgraded your Xboxes to Xbox 360's, you have a total of 4 xboxes,
get some cheap booze, you now have a 16 player Halo 2 LAN.
Problem is Xbox 360 isn't modded yet, so you would have to actually buy some Xbox games, but they will get very cheap anyway :; - *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But the 360 is now retail ready and shipping. Surely if they add more backwards compatibility this would require a software update to the 360. Or have I got the wrong idea altogether?
