- oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I personally enjoy the Achievements. At least it adds more value to a game and offers more replay then other companies offer in their games.
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Eh... I see them as more of a personal goal. It gives you something to strive for in a game. There are people out there who make it their lifes goal to hoard GP's but I don't see the point. Play to have fun and if there's an achievement that looks like it would be fun to try for...do it.
- Goken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like the achievement system because it shows me what I haven't done yet in that particular game.
- Psygnosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it would be kind of cool if there was some way to adjust the points awarded based on the number of people that have that achievement. If not very many people have a certain achievement it could be worth more points. It might make those achievements in FFXI actually worth something.
- TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The best achievements are the ones that force you to play the game in a way you wouldn't before. The best example is Call of Duty 3, there is an achievement for completing an entire mission without firing a weapon. I ran around smashing Germans in the face with the butt of my rifle like a loony toon and had a blast doing it. Something I wouldn't have ever tried without them.
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's adds a REASON to replay a game. You know that EVERYONE who has the "commando" in GoW has beat the game AT LEAST twice, probably three times (myself...about 10 times because it's fun on top of that.).
- Phayde415, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think 360 "Achievements" are a direct play on the psychology of why people find games so entertaining.
After reading an article on Digg earlier about how we thrive and are addicted to the feeling of overcoming challenges, completing tasks we set out to do, and the overall feeling of accomplishment we get from relating to characters in games, its readily apparent that the "Achievement Unlocked" animation that pops up on your screen is the epitome of all these things incarnated into one joyous flash and blip. - sikosmurf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What does it matter to you how points are given out? If you're complaining about how some games are easier to get points than others, just know that points are distributed by the developer of the game. If you are talking about the idea that a C game gets as many points as a Triple-A game, how do you propose they fix it? By playing every game and seeing how many points it's worth? By making it directly proportional to the production cost? Varying the points from one game to the next would require a lot more work on everyone's part and it's seriously not worth it.
I'm sorry you're sorry that you feel your epeen is smaller than someone else's, but it seriously doesn't matter. - halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i hate achievements. because when halo 3 comes out everyone will be boosting (see gears of war.).
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't see the objection at all. The irony is that the site is called too old to play and these guys don't seem to remember the days of the coin arcade and getting your crude three letter word or initials in front of the high score on the hottest game of the day. What did it get you? Jack ***** ... but you had the high score on that game. This is the same thing. Cool for those who are into them and (I wish) ignorable by those who don't care. Its not a real issue.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He means that games you delete off your hard drive remain in your list of played games/achievements only with a zero next to them if you didn't buy it. So when you look at the score you have out of your potential it still lists all of the 200 pt XBLA trials in the potential but of course zero in the achieved points.
First time I've ever thought about it but I suppose if you're interested in a truly accurate measure of achieved vs possible it would be nice to remove em since you can't get the points for trials anyway. Not that big a deal. - ironpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1achievements are one the smartest things that microsoft did. It makes the games have more value and make more people play differents games just to get a higher achievment score. Brilliant
- NoHandle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with achievements is that they don't ban people like this:
http://gamerscorechart.com/xbox/detail-chart/?GamerTag=legitcracksellr
Check out his gamer card. He finished everything in Oblivion, in a day? Really? That took well over 60 hours for me (Spent 120 enjoying the game) and somehow 60 doesn't seem to divide into 24 very evenly.
Never mind the fact that he managed to get 20,000 points in the last 10 days.. - TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I rented King Kong for the easy achievements, beat it in a day for 1000 points.....and had fun doing it. Is that wrong? Gamerpoints are the reason I played a game, and beat it. If I played through a game that blew (99 nights) for the gamerscore then that would be stupid.
- smizzalini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1too much time and money?
well it would be broken if they were actually worth something... lets say you achieve 1000 achievements for a game... then it would unlock a new map or something... other than that... its worthless and only has one thing to it as to why it was created... to BRAG!!!
but I mean its up to you to be intimidated over someone elses Gamerscore... - Marpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dang! For a minute I thought that this article was going to reveal something about Gamer Score that I didn't already know.. like maybe that there is some value to it of which I was unaware.
I enjoy beating the little benchmarks, but it never occured to me that people actually ascribe some sort of comparitive value to the number, since you can scoop the points in any number of simple ways. I mean, if Microsoft sent me 500 MP's every 1,000 Score Points or something, I'd be all over that action. Otherwise, this seems like a pretty huge non-issue. ...which I just spent several minutes adressing. Dang! - Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find myself only looking at the number of points when it comes to comparing myself against my friends. And even then I'm not comparing numbers; I'm simply interested in what they've managed to get, because yes some APs are hard as ***** to unlock.
Also, can someone explain number 4 to me? I'm seriously lost as to what the author is trying to say:
"Drop the Arcade Demos. We all know why they are on there. Once you try a game, if you don't buy it, you automatically leave 200 points unfulfilled. That motivates buyers, but it stinks, just let us drop them. I hated Joust for XBLA, even though I loved the original, why punish my already pitiful score with another sandbag?"
Does he mean the allure of 200 points in the arcade games is too strong to pass by? When I download the arcade demos, I'm asking myself "Is it fun enough to shell out money for? Am I going to play again?" Not, "Holy crap *twitch* I need APs." *scratch* *twitch* - Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for clearing that up, now it makes sense. I guess he does have a point there. But yes, not a big deal at all.
- DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good read DUGG
- lejake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If achievements come to me as I play a game, fine, that's great.
But the bottom line is that achievement points will not get you laid, ever. So stop caring so much. - echonull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Phayde415:
Link please? I'd like to read that article.... - Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't care enough to beat a game I don't like...achievements or not. Most people don't give THAT much of a crap out achievements. I rented COD3 and got tired of it (same old COD with new maps and objectives), rented Prey and didn't beat it, and the same goes for several other games.
By the way, there are no "shiny leaderboards" on a per-game basis (i know, you weren't talking about the 360 with that comment). But anyway, there are 1000 gamerpoints per game (200 per arcade game). PLENTY of people get all the points in a specific game... - mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The only people who really care are people with low scores. That seems a lot like sour grapes to me.
- DaKing240, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like achievements, and think its an interesting article. I like how they plug our website (and use our "Achievement Unlocked" image!
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you're that concerned over something as lame as gamer scores then you have bigger issues to deal with.
- KyotoWolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As soon as you posted them on the internets they ceased to be yours
- Johonn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Achievements are a nice added feature of a game. It was a blast getting all 36 from RB6:Vegas. Would i have played every part of the game other wise. Chance are i would not have. Therefore, i guess i am getting my $60 out of the game.
- rAid135, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"OMFG I'm going to rent King Kong and whore 1,000 points"
Honestly... Balance it more please - jasontroy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great writeup English.
- Whackly, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4OK.... "Are achievements a broken system that favor those with too much time and money or are they a way to increase game value and engage in friendly competition?"
No. I mean, having a high score doesn't gain you anything except a small case of "internet famous" at best. Do people with low gamer scores feel inadequate? Is there some kind of competition or something material to be gained by having a high gamer score that I don't know about? Does my gamer score somehow correlate to my penis size? Seriously, if somebody has enough time and money to have a huge gamer score and a sea of achievments .... who care? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@Phayde415
It's just like sex, only this way when bragging I have proof. - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1You have all been tricked into buying and beating bad games............
Shame on you.
On a side note, I am holding a contest to see who can digg the most of my comments. The winner will get nothing substantial, but he WILL get his name posted atop a shiny leader board on the internets....
Hey, at least it won't cost you a years wage to get on top of this one. - etgggg, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0unce unce wii is better 360 is for fags and for halo 3 unce unce ucne unce unce unce

What is Digg?
