- franksands, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the "best" is the superman cover, because of being so "authentic"
- Zodzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gamespy had a similar article a few years back. Check out their number one, I think we all have to agree that it's pretty much the worst game cover ever, especially when you get a glimpse at which game it's for...
http://archive.gamespy.com/top10/january03/covers/index.shtml - bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The last one is funny. It reminds me of the Ambiguously Gay Duo
- baaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bazooka Bill?!!!!!! Some of those look like 3rd graders colering book..
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like how the majority of the covers have somebody with their mouth wide open. Terrible pictures, I laughed my ass off at this.
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like some of the gayest games ever. "Joe Blade" "Bill Bazoka" LOL
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the iron sword guy looks like fabio...lol
- blueice03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm going to have to echo the comments about Ironsword. At the time when I was a kid playing that game(one of my favs at the time), I thought the cover art was extremely appropriate and besides that, I had no idea who fabio was then. It was only years later when I saw him in that music video for "I'm Just a Girl" (I think) that I made the connection between him and the warrior on the front of the game.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0welcome to computer program pac-man in asian voice
- N432SEAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Gamespy list is better because of the commentary.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The Streets of England" that looks like a great game ;-)
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Um, gangsters, punks and thugs in the 80s did look like that."
No, no they didn't.
Is that picture of Pro Wrestling for the Sega Master System the same as the US version? I don't really remember.
Also, despite the Atari 400/800 Pac Man artwork, it was still the best port of it at the time (the c64 version was okay too, but I can't remember which came out first). Atari actually made a cartridge version of Pac Man for the c64, which was weird, since Commodore was their rival. I remember owning Pac Man on disk for my c64, published by Thunder Mountain. - MrPhelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whow Metrocross ! I played endless hours on this game ... I had never seen the cover before since it was on some Atari pirate disk hehe ...
- Cowboy5995, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dang I have the original Mega Man and the box but my copy of Mega Man II looks no where near that. The reason the original Mega Man cover is so messed up is because the company was close to launch and then they realized that they did not have any box art. They did not want to use the Japanese so I think latterly they made that up in 10 minutes.
- jwalk81980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG what is Joe Blade doing to that man?!
- bakatrinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://games.terra.com.br/galeria/piorescapas/capa1.jpg
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some are not as bad as expected, but some are just insane! Bionic Granny was fab!
- TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Demon Attack is an AWESOME game. I still love firing that one up on an Atari 2600 emulator. For the time, it had great graphics, and is still a blast to play.
- dmh2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I remember NOT buying 'Mystery of the Druids' specifically because the cover was so bad.
- autoawesomeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of all the hobbies in my life, I was certain that video games would be the one that Fabio would never infiltrate.

- micromause, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The dude on the Mega Man 2 box looks gay... heh... and it says "State-of-the-Art" "High Resolution Graphics" lol
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy monkey *****! Those are friggin' bad! And a few of those I remember. Good thing to know that my taste in design is shared by more than one person.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's weren't all bad, I actually like the Iron Sword cover (fun game too), never played Phalanx, but I remember thinking the box was cool when seeing it in stores. You have to remember that when many of these games came out video games were not part of a big industry. They were considered by most adults to be a kids toy. So publishers probably did not have a big budget for box artwork.
One of the best from back-in-the-day was the first NES Ninja Turtles game, which showed the original Eastman & Laird Turtles, not the cheesy cartoon ones that had just come out on TV.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_(NES_game) - Llan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really like the Bavarian Popeye!
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0totally, good silkscreen ideas
- darthmoridin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it just me or does that guy on the cover of Metro Cross look like Tony Hawk? It's probably just one of those lo-res similarities.
- mattza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol, metro cross
- jervana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Metro Cross is by far the gayest of all.
And what the heck is "Bionic Granny?"
hahahah. - ArcaneDevice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sinclair/games-inlays/b/Barbarian_2.jpg
the actual inlay for Barbarian 1. They don't make covers like that any more. And if they did they would get banned in the USA. - ArcaneDevice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no sorry, you can't have this discussion without mentioning the Barbarian series.

although they are crap video game covers they did have other uses when you were 12. - geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know what this is but this is definatley one of the worst:
http://games.terra.com.br/galeria/piorescapas/capa1.jpg
What's up with there eyes? They supposed to be crying? - BiggusDikkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is that really Favio...? That's so lame!
- cshontz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rival Turf looks like Icy Hot Stuntaz.
- benjicat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is up (no pun intended) with the guy's shorts on the NCAA March Madness 2003 cover!?
- geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Joe Blad 2 is funny:
http://games.terra.com.br/galeria/piorescapas/capa16.jpg - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol NNIS is awesome. Pacman cover was just cool!
- MetaSapienMenos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This seems to be missing the worst/most hilarious box I've ever seen. Once while wasting money at a gamestop I came along a video game called "run like hell" the front was just the name in big letters with a huge alien and a little guy(presumably you standing in the corner) what made it so hilarious was the back which showed 7 or 8 shots of the protagonist running away from some of the coolest looking enemies I've ever seen, note to self do not buy any game where the protagonists main goal is to flee the enemy
- megatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These would make boss t-shirts.
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now you know the folly of cheap graphic arts. Of course context for the time era, but even then some were bad for way back when
- ytsebadd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great art! Yeah, I'd wear some of these on a shirt.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's with the guy who's wrestling his own head in Sega Pro Wrestling?
- paulgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Pacman cover is not that bad. Pacman for the Atari 2600 was the real crime there.
- afpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eah, at least half of those aren't bad, and I like some of them. The standard for box art in the 80s was a lot different than it is today, lots of people seem to forget that.
On another note....did anyone else think this title was referring to cover songs? More accurately "covers" should probably be "box art" - pfdogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0world.altavista.com provides a decent translation from Portuguese to English.
- scarycomp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bionic Granny... good times.
- Peach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty funny. Some aren't that bad, some of the sports ones are just bad shots but hey - you don't have to look pretty to kick butt. I can think of several great players who didnt' necessarily look great on a wheaties box. Some of those covers look like they were drawn by Napoleon Dynamite, though. hm...
- Tipa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The captions are in Portuguese, and you can use any web page translator (like Babelfish) to read them. Some are funny :) But the covers speak for themselves.
