- Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -8/+82And to think, it only took 5 minutes to go from the boot screen to the desktop! Emulating XP on a PowerPC system with 200 MB of ram (I say 200 because that is how much is actually available to Linux on the PS3) is completely useless. Cool, yet pointless.
- epicbard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46@arunforce
that's Japanese. - Fifty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36@arunforce
Do you even know that the PS3 is made by a Japanese company? - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -10/+45How long before someone posts a PS3 BSoD? Or people report that PS3 has malware?
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31It for the geek bragging rights only.
Geek fun... If you don't get it, you're probably not a geek. - steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -13/+41You suck.
Discuss. - ronaldst, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27The fact that they got themselves a PS3 in the first place is impressive.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Proof of concept or for props in the gaming/modiing community?
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I seriously doubt there is anything that could be done to speed up WinXP's performance. It is running EMULATED on non-x86 architecture, and it has a whopping 256 MB of RAM minus however much overhead Linux and Qemu itself needs. Qemu only has so many configuration options, and I doubt any of them could significantly improve XP's performance on the PS3. Whomsoever did this should be proud they got it running at all, but the last thing they should expect is for it to "run smooth as butter."
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18On a side note... running xp on an emulated machine doesn't exactly = running on the actual hardware.
- CamZak, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Hey, I thougth the PS3 cell processor could do 2 teraflaops!?! Even if it's running at 1/100th emulation speed, that's still 20 gigaflops! Something must be wrong with Qemu!
/sarcasm - Shadez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Well I spose it is better than most the other launch titles
- solarisom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18"i'm sure it'll get tweaked to run smooth as butter"
I laughed so hard I cried :) - raingrove, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20even fedora core bootup is quite slow for a machine with such hyped hardware..
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I had Qemu running Windows XP Pro on my PowerBook (G4 1.5 GHz), it took 10 minutes to boot up and moving the cursor was slow.
- MrZop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Wow, Now I can get my PS3 to play Spider Solitaire. That was worth the investment.
- CatalystGhost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@edzeiba
If you spent that much on your computer, you're using it for gaming, and thereby need to run XP. Duh.
If you spent that much on a system just to run Linux and surf the net or do things like that... you're an idiot.
And if you think that's enough for a graphics developer's computer, or something like that which can be done in linux... you're an idiot. - raingrove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11cedega is wine... wine runs only under x86. ps3 is ppc.
- Thargok, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Yeah, it's called a PC.
- pamon, on 10/12/2007, -12/+22Who'd want to run win xp on a ps3? doesn't it defeat the $2500 u paid for it and the 90 hours in line spent on it? Whatever
- spyder91, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Because it's almost as fast as an Emachine?
- borchard76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yes the memory is VERY fast. Great. But when you try loading two or three 25MB textures or doing anything beyond basic computing, you are going to feel the pinch of not enough RAM--as in actual memory space. For instance, right now I am running WinXP with Firefox and nothing else open. IN the applications window there is another item showing, and I have several processes going. I am using about 400MB of RAM, of which 128 is for the share with my video card. 40MB is going to Linux. That leaves about 130 MB that is being used by various system and background applications/processes. I could smooth it out a bit, but I've got 2GB--I'm not that concerned.
Now, if I only had 256 to work with, it would be an issue, because I'm not really doing much. Let's say I launch word, SPSS and excel (a common scenario for me). SPSS takes 74MB, Excel (with nothing open) takes 15, and word takes 25 (also nothing open). SPSS has a data file and an output file. The point is that if you are doing anything other than running internet explorer/firefox and email, then you are going to feel the pinch of only 256 very quickly. I don't recommend a system with less than 1GB these days, and preferably 1.5GB or 2GB. - sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This is one of those things you do just to prove you can do it. Because of the limited RAM and the underpowered main CPU (3.2Ghz PPC, but with many things cut out like the branch prediction and a limited memory architecture) I really don't think you'd ever want to do this for real unless you were desperate. Win98 maybe. The PS3 should have plenty of power to run old Windows games even under emulation.
- Thargok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Wine Is Not an Emulator. Wine is architecture independent, Wine will run on PPC. x86 binaries will not. If by some miracle you got a PPC binary (which some existed in NT) it should run fine.
- WolfDV, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Err . . Yeah?
My modded xbox could do the same thing . . emulate windows through linux. Trust me not very impressive. Good proof of concept, but thats it.
Now get linux to directly interface with all the hardware properly, and get some advanced emulators on there
Talk to me when they get a n64 emulator on the ps3 that upscales the resolution, adds AF/AA & HQ texture packs, and plays every rom flawlessly (ie Perfect Dark)
The problem is they likely won't get to this point, becuase although by sony allowing linux to run (with simple non resource hogging programs) . . .they do not currently allow anything to access the hardware directly.. think hypervisor OS level only (no 3d accelleration in linux yet)
But I guess any progress is a step in the right direction . . abit a very small one - DoctorNo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8>>My modded xbox could do the same thing . . emulate windows through linux
Getting Windows XP to "emulate" on the Xbox (with its x86 CPU) is a lot less interesting then getting it to run on the Cell-based PS3 as proof of concepts are concerned.
As far as emulators, the PS3 already has a leg up , being that most emulators are running with the machine being out only a week. - f3l1x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nice icon! :)
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's emulated, it's going to be slow no matter what.
- dippyskoodlez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9now if only you never bought into more marketing bull, and actually knew what you were talking about...
Its a bottleneck because 256-128mb for os/app = 128mb, then all processor instructions are emulated...
$5 says my G5 emulates x86 faster than 3 ps3's combined. - f3l1x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8800244920606286092&sourceid=docidfeed&hl=en
save yourself the headache of visiting this crappy blog and link the vid. - kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6While it is pointless, I think a better operating system choice would be that one release of XP that was specificly designed for legacy computers, because it doesn't have any facny crap, just the core operating system, and too bad the site is down, I would have liked to see it, I guess I will just bookmark it until its not dugg to death.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Install Linux and run console emulators that were made for Linux. People are already doing that.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Well I personally feel that he sucks because he's just antagonizing people for his own enjoyment. I can understand how other people might feel that he sucks because he's not very bright and others still might be concerned that he sometimes has sex with men. I don't usually begrudge people their opinions so I'll let that be, but I would like to hear some other opinions as to the root cause of his suction.
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5pretty crappy resolution!
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"It runs a little slow though because of the 256MB of RAM but i'm sure it'll get tweaked to run smooth as butter"
Highly doubtful, considering that XP doesn't run smoothly on NATIVE x86 hardware with only 256MB of RAM... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"PS3 would rock if:
1)Linux had full access to hardware"
It does, though drivers for the RSX are on the way. - craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it's more along the lines of only being able to access a small amount of the Cell's power, and running the emulation is slow even on newer systems with alot of memory. It's having to interpret x86 and run it on the Cell.
- k9scout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Good question dbug. I was wondering that myself. I am curious if osx would be able to recognize and use the cell processor natively because the cell processor is in fact based on the power pc architecture. No one thought that the current version of osx was Apple of using duo quad cores until someone placed in the machine.I have a good felling that the osx has the ability to use the cell processor because originally Apple likes to use processors that are used for servers. It would be very interesting if the reason that Apple went to Intel was that fact the cell processor was not available due to Sony using all of them for the ps3.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Remember, the PS3 has just been released. There's pretty much no optimisation whatsoever going on here. It's akin to putting in one of intel/AMDs fancy new quad-cores, then running a single-threaded program and complaining that it doesn't run any faster.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you are correct sir. how is this any different than running qemu on any computer out there?
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4well, if qemu or any other virtual machine app codes in support for cell processor, i think xp could run considerably faster. while there still is the issue of the 256mb of ram.
i have to admit, i didnt expect it to run as slow as it did. - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Its really not PS3 that making it run its LINUX. Likes its DONE for years now.
- pronouncable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Running a virtual machine in a supported linux distro != Being easily hackable
- fauxXenophanes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4$600 almost-computer, without OS - sign me up!!!
- hypercube33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hardly. You'd be better off doing a cluster and emulating XP on that, fool. Ever try using Virtual Machine and playing games in that, like solitare? It's laggy.
- hypercube33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not a geek because I think its lame that XP can run in an emulator? When they get it booting from a bootloader, then I'll take notice, otherwise this is pathetic lame, and a blog. Not content for Diggnation.
- hypercube33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You'd want to copy and upload a 30GB ISO of a blue-ray?
