- fohf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+54still doesn't support flash player 9. no pornotube on the wii...
- sofaKing812, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50Getting online with the wii is cool for a little while, but that is about it. Getting online to play some games would be the bee's knees though.
- barktwiggs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38It is Adobe's fault that there is not FlashPlayer 8 or 9 available for the Wii:
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/forum.dml?id=2081
It has nothing to do with Nintendo nor Opera. At least you can still watch Youtube... - jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29nice to see the use of bee's knees
- ParanoiaAgent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26I've tested Dailymotion and it works now. That pretty huge. Pages load much quicker. It doesn't "freak out" over large videos. You can quickly go back and forth between pages you've been to. You now have options, including auto-hiding the taskbar, deleting cookies, and setting your search engine. You can zoom in or out as much as you would like, and text is more legible in the default setting. All in all, a great update that makes browsing on the Wii much more enjoyable.
- Charron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Free if you download before June, I believe.
- muzzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Yes indeed it does keep them bookmarks.
- lukasm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19"stealthy system update"
umm. what? They sent everyone a message on their Wii message boards about the update. - bittermang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Yeah, I'm with you.
Except I knew a guy who swears by Web TV. He told me of how it was better because Web TV couldn't get any viruses, and he could do his email (Yahoo and Hotmail) and how he didn't need a big clunky computer. He sung the same praises which they tried to use to usher in the era of web appliances which failed. He, to this day even, will not be changed from his convictions.
So the Wii, with the browser; it's like Web TV on steroids. An actual modern browser, pretty standards compliant, and all the new functionality and fixes they added today raise it from "novelty" to "functional application" in my eyes. Plus you can play games on it, do news, and check the weather. Novelty? Sure. But old people love the weather. That is how they are able to support a 24 Hour long Weather Channel on the Television, in this day of Internet and thermometers on every corner of every city block and inside of the dashboard of the car you drive; old people love the weather, and they want to know what it is at all times.
The only thing better would be a way to pause a game, go to the Wii Home Menu, load up GameFAQs.com on the browser, and then go back to your game.
Not that any of us would ever use GameFAQs, however. Perish the thought. - withoutashovel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15does it keep your bookmarks from the beta?
- tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I wasn't expecting this at the time it came across. I was lying on my couch watching Crash and I saw my Wii suddenly light up. When I see that, it's like seeing the UPS/FedEx delivery guy ringing my doorbell with a new Amazon/Newegg delivery. Fun stuff.
Also, just like with the beta, I never had a problem watching YouTube videos. It always worked. - monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14What does the Wii have anything to do with an Apple Logo ??
- phronko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It was stealthy before it came out. Nobody knew it was coming. Not unlike a ninja.
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11it was stealthy like a bright flashing blue light that woke me up at 2 am.
- fohf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13can't understand why they didn't implement gestures... and more button shortcuts... and tabbed browsing...not to mention almost none of the video formats are supported.
- otatop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The full version is a monster of a download. The only other thing I remember taking this long was Mario 64.
- Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Ya I would love to see some mpg, wmv etc. support instead of just flash video.
Besides, all the best free porn is in those 2 formats ;) - emjaymj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Cuz porn just looks better on my 60" tv
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Its free for now, download it whether or not you are going to use it
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10When family/friends are over, we enjoy watching Youtube clips as my brother's a comedian and he frequently has some of his stuff added to Youtube as well. It's much better to have everyone relaxing on the couch watching it come from the Wii rather than awkwardly hunched over a little computer monitor.
- fromkyletomars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow, the Wii is sure getting exciting after 7 months...New web browser!
- atluen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Great, now if only i can find one....
- mikeflynt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8try finetune - http://www.finetune.com/wii similar to pandora for wii
- therearenorules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Does it work with the NBC or ABC video streamers? I think it'd be great to use it to catch up to TV shows.
- nyrol2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No Pandora love though :(
- nphp20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Much improved from the beta... pages load quicker, it's not nearly as buggy and you can now hide that damn toolbar.
Unfortunately, pandora is still broken, it loads to 75% and then throws an out of memory error. if you click retry the browser takes a ***** and you have to unplug the wii... > . - jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6According to CNET "Opera will start charging for the browser on June 30, but if you download it for free before then, it will stay free for as long as you have your Wii."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Well, there are other uses for the Wii's browser. Doesn't make a lot of sense to use it by yourself when you could just use your computer, but it could be handy if you have a bunch of friends over and want to show them all something on YouTube on a larger screen size that everyone can actually see. It's also nice if you have someone else in the house screaming to use the Internet -- voila, now you have two Internet stations in your house.
Also, the price is right so I tend not to look a gift horse in the mouth. Can't really complain when it's free. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6dugg up just becuse of the bees knees
- jhw549, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's free until June, after that it'll be a cost of 500 wii points (US$5)
- jotatmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm so glad it's here. I've been waiting for an update from that crappy trial version for some time now.
- NondescriptID, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I had heard that it was free until July, but I guess the point is that there is a grace period.
- bmobile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Honestly, I have to say the biggest use of the Wii Browser for me would have to be as "the best couch-based YouTube browser evar". Other than that, I am happy to see this final version come out. The ability to hide the toolbar and the new mouse&sound effects really add to the experience. Way to go Nintendo and Opera!
- seaner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here is a video showing off the new Wii browser for those of you that don't have a Wii: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhHz4jpGxJI
- jhw549, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5WOW, Just started playing with it and they did a GREAT job, load time is so short compared to what it was, the zoom is so much better, the new toolbar is just awesome, and the full screen mode makes things so much better...
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3On a standard res tv, flash videos look awesome. I was just watching an episode of Diggnation and it was tops!
- nyrol2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And Pandora tells me that my Wii is out of memory. So I guess I still can't use it :(
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6i thought this was going to cost money. is it free? unfortunately i'm without my wii for a few days.
- vibez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2orb does work on the old browser. check out the orb forums for the wii beta release. You may have to email the admin to get the link though
- Twindagger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Are anyone else's flash videos jumpy? Like the frame rate is cut in half?
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm also one of those that use it mostly for when I have company over and want to play some web videos. This update was a massive improvement for that, as you can hide the bar at the bottom, arbitrarily zoom, and adjust the overscan.
- Rogers101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I use the browser for one thing:
http://www.finetune.com/wii/
It's not Pandora, but it's a good substitute. - theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not a stereotype. It's true.
- MasterFunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I noticed that too, but I relized that was only happening when the screen cuts off part of the flash video, meaning if you zoom in enough to cut the bottom buffering bar on youtube, the video frame rate drops.
- teqonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Will the browser be able to be transferred to another Wii system if you back it up on an SD card? My Wii's been acting up lately (locking up when channels are launched at random), and if I need to get a new system past the deadline I'm hoping I won't need to pay for it..
- hansoffate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's 5 bucks. I am willing to pay 5 bucks to have better support and better features.
- celerityfm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Wut? Holy ***** I just looked at my Wii, it's GLOWING. I love that shi when it does that. It doesn't happen often enough, guess I need more Mii friends :(
- FellateMeFreddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If only Orb worked on it...
The auto-hide feature and the zooming are insanely awesome though. - weslobombs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Amazing. truly a treat
- OldRick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The improved Wii channels page and the improvements in the channels themselves from the system upgrade (News, in particular), and the Opera upgrade are all huge improvements.
It would be very very annoying to be unable to upgrade ones Wii from the initial shipments due to lack of an Internet connection - does Nintendo intento offer a firmware upgrade disk at some point? -
