- a0me, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21> why would someone pay this much for something they can do themselves?
So they don't have to do it themselves? - davidsmero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Survey Says: No they can't handle the traffic.
- renegade334, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13those 2 candles have to be constantly replaced....
- crcurran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@sinner0423
Just because YOU don't have a use for it or can't imagine anyone else having a use for it, doesn't mean it's NOT useful. Try to be more openminded.
I have a projector so I have a need. I also have a cat that will slice right through that cable as soon as she finds it; she could be gnawing on it at home as I type this. I need something like wireless IR but I'm not sure I'm going to buy it right now. More solutions to my problems are sure to follow so I'm going to wait. - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+112 plastic Chanukah candles = $1.99
- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Patents? It's a couple of battery-operated LEDs, who the hell would grant them a patent for it?
...
Wait, sorry, forgot we're talking about the USPO here... - Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9wirelesswiisensorbar.com?
Seems like they're limiting themselves a bit. - cheez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11dugg because some people will want it and I think it's cool but I don't need one for 25 bucks when I have tucked the cord away just fine
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It is a bit overpriced though... the original for $10 is overpriced. I mean, it's just a wire connected to LEDs.
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This one screams ugly!
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just because you work on WiiLi doesn't mean you are the be-all-end-all of IR emitting devices. The layout is more like /||| /||| if you want to be technical about it.
And as far as "getting it right" all you need are two sources of IR spaced about 8" from each other.
It doesn't have to be exact and the only difference between candles and LEDs is the intensity of the light.
@mikesherov
My cursor was doing the flicker too. All you need to do is adjust the remote's sensitivity in the Wii settings menu. My setup has the bar about 10-12 feet away from where I stand, so I pushed mine up to 4 and the flicker completely stopped. If you are really far away you could set it up to 5. - jocnnor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Do you:
Change your own oil?
Repair everything on your car?
Develop your own photos?
Make your own beer?
Cook your own Chinese food?
Make your own batteries?
Make your own CAT5?
Why would someone pay this much for something they can do themselves you ask? It's a matter of if people know how to do it plus if the time spent actually doing it is worth what it costs to have it done for them. - kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"why would someone pay this much for something they can do themselves?"
You ever order a pizza and have it delivered? Why didn't you just drive to the pizza place, order it, wait 10 minutes for the pizza to be ready, and then take it home?
If you want to become rich in America, find something that capitalizes on the laziness of people. America, as a society, places a value on time, and is willing to pay extra for convenience. - nerditup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I thought that you could get the Wii without the sensor bar for only 25 bucks. Damn.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6you would actually need 10 candles to get it right
on a pattern similar to:
O OO O O O OO O to get the same effect of the bar. I work on WiiLi. - mikesherov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I consistently use 2 candles when I play Wii... It actually works BETTER. You know how if you twist the wiimote in your hand on the Wii Menu, the finger also twists, but sometimes it has a flicker? That flicker doesn't happen when I use candles. In games like Red Steel where pointer accuracy is a bit touchy, the candles help a lot.
I'm gonna buy a couple of leds that have the same IR signature as candles and are stronger then the Wii Sensor Bar. I can't imagine it costing anywhere close to $25 to pick up a couple of these at a hardware store. I'm never using the sensor bar again! - drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Since I don't have the means of doing so...I'll give away a free $$ making idea. Someone go make a slim notebook mounted version so we can use it with our bluetooth notebooks.
- jmaynardg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3kent1146: "You ever order a pizza and have it delivered? Why didn't you just drive to the pizza place, order it, wait 10 minutes for the pizza to be ready, and then take it home?"
And here I thought a "do-it-yourselfer" might make and rise their own dough, grow their own tomatoes and make their own sauce, milk a cow in order to make their own mozzarella, and pack cow intestine with meat byproducts for their own homemade pepperoni.
Sheesh! You mean all I had to do was call Domino's? - brianez21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Could have done without that last line..
- fuzzboxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"No more tripping over the cord"
Bwuh? - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Don't have two candles, and hate wires?"
.. and like buying/charging batteries ? - buZztiaan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2TOTALLY overpriced
6$ in parts + website = 35$ , instant profit - IchiroBoston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cheep looking, would be better if it was thinner without the red light.
I have been using 2 candles... its actually nice, I put two tealight candles right in front of the TV (CRT) and it works great from 10ft away! It always cracks me up that I have to light them up to use the Wii :)
Im thinking of installing LED's in my TV or furniture - burndive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of us have projectors, which means the Wii is actually on the opposite side of the room as the sensor bar.
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+212 batteries? You've been playing the Wii nonstop since launch? I think we need an intervention.
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its a niche market. maybe if they get all the patents then theyll have the monopoly.
- drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whoops, pronoun wasn't used correctly...by it I meant a Wii Remote
- Ratty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mikesherov
You probably need to adjust the sensor bar sensitivity in the wii settings. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is easy to make your own battery powered sensor bar, or better yet A/C plugged sensor bar WITHOUT cutting any wires:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9102614#post9102614
6 volts works perfectly, without the sensor bar overheating. You can use 4 D, C, AA, or AAA batteries for this, or a 9v though it will run hotter.
I didn't want to mess with batteries, so I used an A/C to 6v transformer instead. You can get these anywhere. - thread, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1google cache link doesn't work, try:
http://www.wirelesssensorbar.com.nyud.net:8090/ - lokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have used those LED candles with great success. You only need to replace the batteries. They give off a soft glow, much the same way that real candles do, and there is no risk of fire.
- jocnnor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@j3one
Ha! It's great you do these things. I just listed examples of things people pay for when they can be easily done themselves (except maybe the battery thing...don't know where that came from).
I just bought a Wok last week. Can't say I'm very good with it yet...but give it time.
I agree these things are worth the time. Time is an investment. Learning to do these things will probably take more time than just having it done for you, but the more you do it, the faster/cheaper it will become. It's that whole man fish proverb.
If you give a man a fish, he will be fed for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he will buy worms from you. Or something like that ;-) - j3one, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Change your own oil? Yes. everyone should know how to do this.
Repair everything on your car? Pretty Much.
Develop your own photos? Its a Hobby.
Make your own beer? Hell yah!
Cook your own Chinese food? Wok n roll baby ;-)
Make your own batteries? Not usually, but its happened.
Make your own CAT5? Of course!
- i guess you can chalk me up to penny pinching nerd/geek but I think its worth the time. Oh and come on man, learn to cook Chinese food! - djmayne2001, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1also does it matter on the type of candles you are using. Its pretty cool alternative any how. Love the idea of playing the wii in the dark with candles burning next to the screen. I just ordered some candles from http://www.candlestoyou.co.uk. Hopefully the bad boys should do the trick.
- burndive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Some of us don't have TVs; we have projectors, thus placing the Wii on the opposite side of the room from the sensor bar.
- GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's the intensity of the IR from a candle versus an LED? Candle gives out nearly 360-degrees of light, whereas the LED only gives out around 120. So, no, you wouldn't necessarily need the same layout of candles as LEDs in the sensor bar.
- donquixote235, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought one as well... I'm playing around with PC development utilizing the wiimote, and I don't want to have to hook my Wii up in my office just to take advantage of the sensor bar stuff. Ideally, however, I'd like to see a version that uses a USB port to charge it or something, but I don't think a USB port would provide enough energy (~5v) to support the sensor bar (which uses ~12v).
- cronos916, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1looks like no.
- ZippidyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You mean all of the fanboys that came the first time this was posted, which was yesterday. I bet the site is just promoting its self to sell the product ^_^
- dave0001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks good to me. The site works now, too!
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lol! spam!
- marlinmayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0because i wanna pay $25 for a wireless sensor bar that looks like crap. i can always keep the one that came free with the system that looks WAY better and, even if the wire is long, it is tucked BEHIND my tv, so it's not like i'm tripping over it.
- greenvortex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Do-it-yourselfers: LEDs have very uni-directional light output. Your bulb enclosure better do some good diffusing or your Wiimote is going to have a hard time detecting the LED off-axis.
- LoudNoise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"No more tripping over the cord!"
What?
Tripping over the cord = TV + Wii by the TV + sensor bar on top of Tv + ???????
I'm really not trying to be a dick, but battery life could be better. At 48 hours at battery, I would've gone through like 12 batteries so far...although it would be nice for taking the Wii to your friends house, which I do a lot. Hell, I have friends I didn't even know about coming over to play! - snowboardfoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it has an on/off switch... so its gameplay hours not total life.. a charger would be sweet though...
- crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Google Cache

- snowboardfoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0hey as long as we're bunching our panties over making your own- let's make our own clothes too.. hell let's get cows and farm our own milk... crap let's chew tree sap instead of gum! or if ur not macGyver... you could swallow your pride and buy stuff like every other consumer in america.
