- nibble128, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39And that is why they are gonna have a opera web browser? I am sorry bud, however they are not going for convention here, and anything is still possible from Nintendo.
- LawLSUVA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24I disagree, if it's something cheap and easy to implement, this would definitely fit with Nintendo's Blue Ocean strategy - trying to grab people who don't always play games.
Give the grown-ups another reason to buy a Wii, and Nintendo will want to do it. - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25osxmusic, I can't wait to get my Wii so I can VoIP you to reply to your asenine comment.
- MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I thought the built-in Mic was a given. They put on in the DS, why not one in the Wii-mote? It's such an easy thing to build, and it opens a bunch of options. Why would you /not/ have one? It's not like you /have/ to use it in every game, just like how you don't have to have motion-sense in /every/ game.
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20I agree, adding something like this is against nintendo's agenda with Wii. Sure you could argue the web browser it comes with isn't for gaming, but you can use it to look up stategy guides etc. A phone though... that's just clearly going overboard. I think they will probably have a microphone built into the remote, for gaming use of course. At least it wont download music and other things I couldn't give a ***** about in a gaming console *cough* PS3 *cough*.
- Zaxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The microphone is likely, but I think it is safe to assume that when Nintendo talks of VoIP they are only referring to in game chat. I doubt they are going to partner with Skype and release a VoIP phone for Wii. However to do the in game chat they may use the VoIP protocol, or just something similar that was compared to VoIP.
Just throwing in my 2 cents... - lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15No batteries in the Wii remote... it runs solely on fairy dust. An adverse effect is that it also leaves twinkles whilst moving.
- Pirkel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Well... A mic with opera could enable voice browsing... say... "Url, www.digg.com" and it goes to digg
- megashaun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Someone at Joystiq needs to learn Photoshop.
- UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@ lonnieh
The only problem is keeping dead Disney characters on ice in your freezer - you have to feed the wiimote a thawed Tinkerbell every 4-6 weeks. - janit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Not sure about that, but Opera could well be a part of the VOIP thing if it's true. They announced a partnership with JAJAH a while back: http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/04/06/2/
And one more thing... remember Wii being always online? That'd mean you could receive VOIP calls reliably too. - kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Oh my god this Wii thing is looking really good, i never got a gamecube but im seeing now how dedicated to gamers Nintendo are.
The Wii looks truly innovative, not like that crappy blu ray drive thats gonna have loads of bugs that sony has!
It will definately be on my list once ive acquired a 360. - Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You know I have been wondering that, with all the buttons, IR sensors/Transmitters (not sure which), Motion Sensors, Rumble, a Speaker, the numchuck ad-on, and possible the microphone, all in that tiny package. It does make me wonder what the battery life is going to be like.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7While I don't really care for voice chat, especially through a Wii-mote, the interactive possibilities for having a mic in the controller are vast. Voice activated commands are the obvious choice... and as mentioned above, if this thing can do karaoke it's the end of the line for MS and Sony in Japan.
Wii plus Karaoke = Japanese domination. - FEWrecks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Throwing in VoIP support would be another incentive for the non gamers out there."
Is it just me? I don't see non gamers buying a Wii just for the VoIP. - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Shrug, nothing stopping them from doing it. I mean, you CAN voice chat with people in Metroid afterall. I'm assuming that the WiFi network for the DS and the Wii will share infrastructure, so they could launch the two at the same time, using the same software on their end.
I'd think it's much more likely that you'll be able to "call up" other Wii owners, but not just any ole' telephone number. - bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Opera's voice capabilities are currently available only for Windows. Course, it would be cool if they pulled it off.
- invisiblespam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nintendo is really doing it right this time around. Not trying to directly compete with Sony and MS on graphics alone could really pay huge dividends. One only needs to look around the Internet to see the buzz Nintendo has created. With all the "secret" features and price point speculation continuing on after E3, they have really done the best job of keeping their system fresh in the minds of consumers. I for one am rooting for the Nintendo resurgence and plan to have my Wii on launch day. When you couple a fun system like Wii with a pure graphics and DVD player like the 360 you really can't lose.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If they are going to use VOIP for online gaming voice chat, which seems reasonable, then there is no reason why you wouldn't be able to use Skype. Maybe it wouldn't be supported out of the box, but Skype could come out with a Wii installer package that installs onto an SD card and acts like a browser plug-in so you just start up the browser and load an address book, then click on the person you want to phone.
I really want that :) - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, it said that "$250 would be reasonable" for the Wii. Not "the Wii will be $250".
Iwata has hinted, several times, that it'll be $199 just like every other console Nintendo has ever released. - Mullinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I guess thats why everyone is so excited isn't it? Face it, graphics are not the only thing in the gaming world to give you an edge. If it was the only thing then we wouldn't be playing "games", we would be playing tech-demos.
- kkaabboomm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the built in mic is much more likely than voip support. and this is the best digg article explaining this, as they present it as a rumor and 'may', not the 20 others who say 'confirmed, OMG, voip on wii! mic confirmed!!!!'.
so kudos to theprototype! - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6LAME. - "Incentive to non-gamers"
If the non-gamers want a phone, they wouldn't buy a console.
Thinking they would, would be like expecting non-drivers to buy a car for the CD-player.
Even if they want a VoIP phone, they just need to buy a $99 Vonage VoIP phone, or the like.
Besides, lets overlook the fact that no one wants to have to wait to boot up their console JUST to make a call, let alone be tethered to the TV, and looking like an idiot talking into a console controller.
(I don't think you could look sillier if you were talking into a banana. (BANANA PHONE!) At least then the banana's cordless. :-/ )
Microphone & Speaker != VoIP device.
This is just another lame non-diggworthy submission.
I'm not saying the Wii won't be cool. No, it probably will be a sweet console, and will be (relatively) within budget.
But the only REAL news here is that Nintendo has confirmed that we don't know everything about the Wii.
So lets just submit a story to Digg for every speculation the rumor mill churns out.
...Next submissions;
"Wii Mote May Drive cars & Rape Daughters." &
"OMG! Wii is warm when running and has a flat surface!.....POSSIBLE BUN WARMER FUNCTIONALITY!"
You want a PLASUABLE possibility to a microphone in the controller?
In-game voice-chat. - PDAIsAOk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All of this information was leaked before the keynote speech at E3. The leak said it came from a yet to be released EGM magazine. It said the controller would have a speaker in it. It would also function as a microphone (VoIP, sing-a-along games, voice-controlled games, etc). Since everyone is also wondering how much the Wii will cost. This leak also said it will be released for $250. So there you go guys. By the way, everything from this leak was confirmed at Nintendo's Keynote. Aside from the information they havent released yet (price, mic functionality)
- BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Remember that the 2nd controller on the Famicom had a microphone. I don't think it had much use outside of players yelling into it hoping for some secret to happen.
- Mullinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who says it won't be used for games? Nintendo has already stated they want MMORPG's on the system, probably they have a few unique MMORPG plans (think of a Pokemon MMORPG). Thats probably what they plan on doing with it. For FPS games you could just have a regular headset using the same system.
- Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For my dorm in college next year it would be AWSOME if it did VOIP, I already use skype but this would make things a whole lot easiser and I would have a always connected signal.
- theprototype, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I never thought about the batteries situation. All that stuff could run them down quick. But i gotta say i used the WaveBird for a very long time and rarely had to switch out batteries.
- aniseed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Donerkebab
Those watches work by having a small dynamo and unbalanced weight attached to it. It's amazing technology from your bike's light!. And it produces so small amounts of power that even the watch won't run on it for a very long time.
The remote will have batteries and a connector to charge it. Same as 360's wireless controller. It'll probably last about 10-20h of gaming on one pop. - iXneonXi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have been saying stuff like this for awhile.
Infact on the Opera forums I suggested that if they release voice on the Wiimote to make use of it and make Opera for Wii voice recognition software. - Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The microphone would be totally reasonable, but I don't think they will implement it as a phone, not at first anyways. I'd say they will probably put it to use as a gaming function before anything, maybe something to do with the WiiChannel domain they snatched up.
- deboosher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i could see a microphone for a game requiring voice activation and maybe for communicating with ppl you're playing with, but that's it.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In my world, when one submission comes in 9 hours prior to another submission, the earlier is in fact the "original". As in: "to originate" or to come "first".
- pheonix2og, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The price he said was no more than 25k Yen. This is equivalent to approximately $223. My guess is that with this statement plus the past statement of "look to our previous pricing" for an estimate of Wii's price leads me to believe $200, at most $220-225 which doesn't seem very likely for a "round" launch price.
- leer317, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The ultimate source in this article seems to be some Spanish blog... how accurate could it be?
- DDRSkata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It might not exclusively make their decision, but it'll help.
- Zaxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2to shakin - You are assuming that Opera is going to enable support for browser based plug-ins. If we look to the DS for insight the browser on there is very limited. (Although space is a great concern). I think that while Skype would be possible on wii (if they do have a microphone), it would have to come as a complete package similar to a game. In which case you would be purchasing it mush like the browser you purchase for the DS.
to Mullinator - Games are Nintendo's focus and it seems reasonable that Nintendo would not want to reinvent a VoIP protocol and instead would implement the libraries and backend code to allow developers to utilize in game voice chat through VoIP. So I am in agreement with you, they may include the VoIP protocol to allow in game chat and it would be a good plan... - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At first I thought Nintendo was not competing with Sony or Microsoft, but now it looks like they're just leaving them behind in the dust. They knew something we didn't...
- Tanpreet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2having a mic in your control doesnt make the Wii get off the focus of being a gaming system. they have mic's everywhere e.g. the DS, Xbox Live headset, PS2 Headset etc.
a mic is actually a bonus for games. - ArcadeJunkies, on 07/30/2008, -0/+2We just need a WiiPhone pic with shiggy talking to Spielburg :)
- 1337gmr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everyone is missing the point the microphone is going to be for speech recognition, I mean you can't type into your Opera Browser with the Wiimote!!!??? We'll that would be the smarter choice, and it would work for MMORPG's... Imagine never having to type again to put in your name for the best score. You can yell out..
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It may also slice, dice and jullienne fries.
Looking back at how much of early speculation has been wrong with every other console on the market, there is a fair chance this is completely bogus and we'll end up with a message 2 days later telling us so.
In short, grain of salt time. - leer317, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember the days of "Hey You, Pikachu!"
How things have changed. - theprototype, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Which is funny cuz I'm pretty sure Resident Evil 4 looked better by far than any game on the PS2 or XBOX.
- apetrie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hadn't seen your comment but I had the same thought. I don't know about the voip thing, I really have no opinion one way or the other but karaoke was the first thing that popped into my head when I heard about the built in mic.. hell the speaker on the remote would be a great way to provide cues or a quiet voice to help the singer along.
- dunstdunst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://wii-wii.us
- tehbio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1VoIP != Phone. Chances are it will have VoIP support if the microphone does exist, but I can't see a 'phone' being implemented (would be pretty sweet if it was, however).
On another note this is exciting to hear, seems like every week there is some sort of new Wii feature. I'm excited. - adizzy615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, I have a question. Why is a microphone embeded in the controller better than a headset, which the other consoles have or will have?
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember the days of...
NIN-TEN-DO
It's a cereal, wow!
NIN-TEN-DO
Super Mario jumps! - apetrie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even though I know its evil, I kind of hope the mic will mean some sweet karaoke Wii action..
