I tried putting my Wii in the kitchen, a closet, and even in the bathroom, and it still doesn't work! ;) - saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+83i am writing this from my wii.
Woot!
So far so good. The predictive text is a bit annoying sometimes but, everytime i use fullstop it wants to put .com or .us when you press space after the fullstop it keeps it there.com - wmoisis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+69I'm in Australia, so I'll give you guys a mini-review.
It seems to be pretty stable...
Sites that work: Most ajax-y sites, like digg, work reasonably well. Sometimes they may crash (like Gmail in standard mode) and you then have to restart the system. Basic html sites, work fine, as they should, and I encountered no rendering problems.
Youtube works great, and fullscreen mode works just as it should.
The problems I found were in the interface. Typing in a website isn't that bad, but viewing it is. To be able to read a website, you have to 'zoom in' with the + and - buttons. Otherwise, the text is effectively unreadable. The problem with this, though, is that it's extremely clumsy and unintuitive, and gets really annoying after a few minutes
Overall, it seems to show a lot of promise but is let down by a few navigation issues. Other features, like USB keyboard and mouse support, would be great, and writing this on the wii took about 15 minutes. - sdphost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30American Browser goes live in 1 hour 10 minutes, 12 am/2am central, confirmed by NOA at nintendo.com
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26IT IS NOT AN UPDATE
Go to the shop to get it. - treyd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28It goes straight from Aruba to the Bahamas. No Australia. American consoles can't choose other continents.
- ParanoiaAgent, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Oh, it's inaccurate because AMERICANS don't have it YET. Makes a lot of sense. I think everyone who marked this inaccurate should get that privilege revoked for a bit.
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Note: it looks like its just Australia so far, try changing your wii's location if you cannot get it.
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22yeah youtube works, had some issues with fullscreen but.com
- LanceWindu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Don't you mean Kii-board? :-)
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yes, but all those attempts were before YouTube became so popular. I believe the Wii browser will be a big thing thanks to the YouTube support.
- TheSalmonThief, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I had an internet once.
- WestDC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yay! Now I can browse the internet!
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Warning: The Content in this Article May be Inaccurate"
Wow it's been a long time since I saw this on digg... I guess they tweaked their algorithm, I guess it's now just like before, a little too sensitive, since this article is accurate! - youpidou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Correct: The zoom adapts to the content.
- jackal27, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Slowest hour.... Ever...
- kablammo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11We all (N.A.) need to calm down and play a game of power bowling. It'll be out when it's out.
P.S. Does Daily Motion work? :P - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Look at this guy's nickname, obviously a troll... Don't feed the trolls :)
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Does anyone know the resolution of the web page portion of the browser, for development purposes?
Also, does it play quicktime movies or just flash? - saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12its the motor for the vibration buddy, thats what sucks power.
- chrismcelligott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9http://flickr.com/photos/chrismcelligott/sets/72157594432674730/
- bking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8MS and Apple dedicated machines to the internet. People didn't care about that. We now have one of the best game machines ever, which happens to browse the internet for free/$7. The games get Wii into the household, and everybody downloads the browser for fun.
Same idea, massively different approach. Wii will not go the way of WebTV. - dspickes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Internets on the television. That's all I'm saying. Companies (Microsoft, Sony, Apple, etc) have tried to take a slice of that pie for quite sometime and been unsuccessful. Who would've thought Nintendo would be the next to take a whack at it?
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's all the non-Aussie's who think their country is the only country in the world.
If it comes out on the 22nd, it only makes sense that it'd be out in Australia before, say, the US. - cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9CONFIRMED. SOMEBODY LIVES IN NORTH DAKOTA.
- TheSalmonThief, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think I've got some internet right here. Don't need any more.
- kaynesan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I live in Germany and at 6 am or something the Wii started to glow.
I checked the message board and there was the message of Nintendo that the beta of Opera is now available.
And I'm actually very pleased with the result! Now I can watch youtube on my TV, really cool :) - deadlikeoscar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I agree this article is completely accurate. Also, I live in Ohio so the wait is killing me.
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Innacurate? ***** diggers, the US isn't the only place on earth!
- Ranneko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The post wasn't inaccurate before the browser was released in the US either though, it is ridiculous that it was ever marked as inaccurate.
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6same here in atlanta. posting this on my wii.
oddly enough, one zoom in is the exact size of the digg comments section. - afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Please stop modding legitimate questions down.
Anywho, I'm not sure which version it is, but it runs all the important stuff properly -- better than my Linux box in fact.
Interesting side note; Just found out that "Linux" is in the Wii's dictionary (^_^) - fupresti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Pornotube works well, so I have no issues...
- viruselectriko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8better than firefox
- basictheory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Which version of Flash is it?
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yay, I can browse the internet from the comfort of my own bed without my laptop heating up my lap!
My skill in laziness has increased by 10. :) - CanOfMDAmp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hmm. Someone who has the browser, can you do an Acid2 test?
http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html#top
That link should work. - oliyoung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it's fairly snappy actually, no discernible difference between it and Opera on a decent modern machine ..
- Lexor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That is... the update is causing me probs. I cannot see the browser in the shop channel yet (Canada). And of course the Shop channel is loading fine, sigh.
- chuckdigi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5does youtube work right out the box? It's not working for me. I get the ol' "you either have javascript turned off or an old version of flash" message
- viruselectriko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5pron with mi wii
- zelab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Posting from my Wii, 3:10 am EST, Ontario Canada.
Incorrectly marked inaccurate. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I want to let you know, that the thumbs up I gave you was on accident, and I was trying to give you a digg down.
So this is me letting you know that I meant to digg you down, and that wasn't someone agreeing with you. - pipes27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5tv-links.co.uk works great!!! Watching Robot Chicken right now.
- ij00mini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Do you know the definition of "can't"?
He said he can't see the browser in the shop channel in Canada. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4OMFG!!! I am borrowing my neighbors connection, and it is starting to go really slow. I want to go over to their house right now, and reset their router.
- afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4N.B. Typing this on the Wii.
Youtube, Gmail, Homestarrunner all fine (though Gmail crashes it if you use the back button to get to it), so I'm all set (^_^) No memory problems (fast rendering).
Zoom works with some kind of Voodoo! It seems to know how wide the text stretches, and zooms in just enough to fit it all in. This makes a great usability difference.
They just need to make it more stable -- other than that, no complaints so far.
I wonder what the extra features they left out of this beta are. - Quaitemp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Of course, it is a Opera browser!
- FaT32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You should check an official but very cool and informative press release from Opera: http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/12/22/
Also includes video in HI-res!
Congratulations and respect for Opera devs! They are developed a revolutionary product! - seanthebond, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Got me excited, but its only Australia and parts of Europe
