- Rayza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+57If you find you screwed it up after 50 hours, that would piss you off..
- falch69, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26In 50 hours I could find a job and make enough money to just buy the damn game. But it's a good first step.
- donotdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17If you want those 50 hours to fly by, start playing Zelda: Twilight Princess.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Krakn3Dfx: Have you never had a scratched disc? Wouldn't you have prefered to pay 33 cents to back it up, than to replace it entirely?
It doesn't matter if people can use it for piracy, people can still use it legitimately - SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Its nice to see legal backups are hopefully on its way.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The 360 has been known to scratch discs on its own (Not the Wii, but a good example). You can't watch little kids or animals 100% of the time. God could just hate you.
The point is, sometimes you can't prevent damage to the disc.
Recently I went across the country to see family. I wanted to bring all my games with me, so I could show people the light. However, I'm not about to bring some $2000 worth of games with me. If they got lost or stolen, that'd really suck. But I brought my backups with me. Yes, if my 360 got stolen, it'd suck. But I'd only be out $300, plus maybe $30 for the discs. Backing up is a one time investment. I bet you spend far more on car insurance percentage wise than what I do to back up. - feaks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12ouch 50 hours. It's a first step sure but well i hope you got another game to play during that time.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I could take on a part time job and make enough money to buy the game again in less time then it would take to dump the disk
- Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I'm actually against modding and pirating Wii titles, not because of any moral high ground, but because Nintendo is keeping their title prices lower, in some cases their games are going for $30, which is totally reasonable IMO. It'll happen anyway, but I think, as a first for me personally, I'll just buy my Wii titles. I actually buy all the XBox 360 games I get too...all 3 of em, but still. I have a modded XBox 1, but I only use it now to stream audio and video to my home theater. I think the last console I modded soley for the reason of bypassing the retail channel was my old PS1.
- Myko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6pathy: I really couldn't tell whether or not you were joking, my sarcasm detector sucks - I hope you were joking.
Everyone should be entitled to back up their legally owned content. I've bought EarthBound for the SNES 3 times over the years, I should just be able to download a copy legally and not have to pay for it again. How is that so hard to understand? - Tainek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7i plan to only use this to backup my own wii collection (6 disks so far) , but games over here are far from reasonable, in the uk the games retail for $80, its a kick in the teeth to shell so much out per game
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Myko,
I was.
I am VERY for giving the rights to people to do whatever-the-*****-they-like with their media.
I have a lot of my games ripped on to my hard drives, ready to load up with D-Tools if I fancy playing or installing them once again. I ***** loathe discs. Steam is a god send.
I've got two backups of my music - I don't buy from iTunes, or whatever. On top of that, I do, as bad as it may be, download things (Mostly because of avalaibility, or whatnot, I'm a UKer), and if I enjoy them a lot, I'll import, or pre order, or whatever.
I hoped my sarcasm would come across instead of it seeming as if I was agreeing with him, alas, I must be off today. - hijinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3because its a start.. its the same first step any modding community takes to play backups..
- deim0s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He's right, remember how fast the Playstation and PS2 died when people figured out how to pirate games for those?
Oh wait. - nonsequitor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, because that 50 hours you waste watching the little hourglass spin could have been much better spent. I don't remember seeing anything about having to hit the spacebar once a minute.
- bennybertow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That would be it... Having to sit there... typing 4... 8... 15... 16... 23... 42... every 108 seconds or so... else it would fail and you would have to start over again. Now THAT's a way to annoy users...
- XStatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish some console manufacturer would support hard drive based loading of games.
I should be able to add a hard drive (Wii has USB ports!) and insert a game and have it loaded to the hard drive.
Perhaps as part of this process you must register the game online to activate the hard drive copy (Wii has Internet access)
Then you need a software mechanism to choose which game to run (Wii has channels)
I like our Wii, but nothing beats my modded Xbox for ease of use, turn it on, select a game, and play.
No Disks to load or keep track of! - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Correct me if I'm wrong, but you might be able to get up from your desk and do something else while your computer is ripping the disc.
- sacherjj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The reason I modded my XBox is not for piracy, but so I could load any of the games I owned without looking for the disc and putting it in. I would love to have that with the Wii with a quiet USB hard drive attached. Add each game you have saved locally to your channels and then play them, like downloaded titles. That would make the experience much nicer. Unfortunately, this means that you can rent them and load them into your system, which doesn't reward developers and makes for fewer dollar and then fewer games.
- Dustyb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good, it will be worth it to ensure Wii Sports never needs to be replaced. Wii Sports gets used a lot on my Wii and its in that cardboard case, there are already scratches all over the disk.
- Jerky1312, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish I could legally make back up copies of my underwear. They are constantly developing holes in them.
- IdanE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Pika: No one wants you to make backups. RIAA doesn't want you to back up your music and play it on a mobile device. MPAA doesn't want you to back your movies up. It all comes down to a very simple "gray area": I want to make backups because optical media is prone to accident. you accidentally place a heat source near an optical disk and it's messed up. Have kids touch it and it might break, or scratch. There are numerous ways for a disk to get messed up, and I for one, like having things backed up. I'm not saying that it can't be used for piracy (and, let's face it, most backups are used for that), but I am saying that you shouldn't keep me from ensuring that my data stays safe (and doesn't get lost - I'm still looking for my Diablo II CDs). I bought the game- I'm entitled to use it every which way I want.
Oh, and BTW, have any of you ever tried to get a replacement disk? You will either have to pay a LOT (and the media costs pennies) or be told that the company has no replacement policy/The game is no longer manufactured.
So yeah, piracy is a side effect that overshadows the legal usefulness, but it doesn't mean that EVERYONE is a pirate - nonsequitor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I live near DC and we have power outages in my neighborhood that last 1 or 2 seconds every couple of weeks. If you haven't already go to your favorite electronics store and pick up a power supply that has a built in battery backup good for 30 minutes. They're cheap and well worth it, considering most power outages are less than a minute, it really saves some unnecessary wear and tear on your computers.
I know you were joking, but the east coast power grid sucks, it'll collapse from the load in the next decade unless some major upgrades occur. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You f'en idiot. Way to screw the developers. Grow up and get a job.
- c0uchm0nster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They're called backups for a reason: They're there when your other methods of protection fail. I'm surprised none of you "backups are an excuse for pirates" people have insisted we go back to the days when games were only on consoles, that way the pirates really can't share stuff that other people haven't paid the right to see or experience.
- Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I will say this:
Obviously, if you are using this tech to honestly backup your game discs that you obtained through legitimate means, that's fine, the problem I have with this is that it opens the door for the, I would say probably 80% or more, of people who use this as a way to pirate games. Again, not going to change the fact that it will happen, but I think it probably does hurt the industry from a financial standpoint when it happens. Would it lower prices in the retail channel if it didn't? Probably not, no, but as an Amiga owner who understands that while software piracy wasn't the entire reason the system failed miserably, it didn't help the situation that 15-30 guys would all meet up once a month for the sole purpose of making copies of each other's software.
I know I pigeon-holed some legitimate people who back up their bought copies of games tho, and I apologize for that. - shodanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Krakn3Dfx
retailer: physical damage not covered by warranty, no refund no exchange = get lost
publisher: same as retailer, if you push enough the support people (to the point they just want to give you a free game just to make you hang up) maybe but this is very unlikely, I don't think this magical replacement disk exchange program exists
even if it did why pay 15$ for a 20$ game you could have backed up for 0.20$
also ALL original disc will succumb to normal wear and tear eventually
what if the publisher is not around then
what if it's been 10 years since the disk is out of production ?
what about in 500 years (yeah that's right 500, realistically, thanks sony) when the copyright expires , how exactly are we supposed to use this game that society paid for by enforcing copyrights for Nintendo for a "limited period of time" - gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or buy a case from store.nintendo.com and then print out the cover art yourself (like I did).
- matthewaaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anybody have a mirror I don't have to login to access?
- aerogant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is why there needs to be chip embedded encryption that is different for each chip. You can make as many backups as you want, you can even distribute it on the internet, but no one will be able to run it on the device itself, maybe some will figure out the encryption of their own device but then they would have to decrypt every one else's backups and encrypt it in their own in order to do it. This would also make it easier to buy games online, and use what ever medium you want to store the game on (DVD, SD cards, etc). The only issue is buying from a store becomes a matter of giving the store your devices ID, they in turn buy it online and burn the game for you on disc (or some other medium of your choice), so it is made to order. This also cuts down on the lame plastic protection schemes from store theft (Yeah I'm talking about the Cosco difficult to remove plastic thingy on thier games :P).
- nonsequitor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The long backup time came from having to use debug commands in the LG firmware (which I guess are not optimized). It'll really get interesting once people start rolling their own firmwares capable of reading these discs with less hassle.
- squirrelza, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12There will always be someone who is going to copy games, and one of those people is me.
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Move to Europe.
Better yet, just recycle an old CD case you don't use anymore. - darny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"...a Wii game disc can be backed up in around 50 hours."
Thereby making a backup disc cost about 100% more than just buying a fresh copy - Skootle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's just the first step to actually playing backed up games on your wii.
*Edit* Whoops, Hijinks beat me to it. - behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow...my block button has been getting a lot of use lately.
- appleseed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the PS3 allows you to do this with certain games. Ridge Racer 7 is one of them if I'm not mistaken. I don't own a PS3, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I mean, the original Xbox had a pretty good run despite the piracy concerns.
Only reason the Dreamcast was more vulnerable was due to extremely strong competition and little-to-no piracy protection. - Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Imagine you started this 50 hour process and the power went out with 1 min to go...
ROTFL - Juntistik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a nice step forward, like Dustyb said, I need to back up my copy of wii sports. It won't last forever.
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Thats the game im wanting to make a legal copy of...
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Some people will do anything for attention.
- Amps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For a 50 hour process, you'd be better working the hours and buying a new copy.
- webjockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, all you people are saying that this opens up a way for Crackers and the such to pirate games. This is not so, also, this metho is redundant in backing up games too. The Wii's Optical Disc drive reads from the outer rim into the centre, the exact opposite of nearly every other drive. This means that when you put your backed up game into the disc, it wil be read backwards. Thats right folks, all those people who have backed up their entire wii game collection have just wasted 50 to 1000 hours of their lives. To play these 'backed up' games you are going to have to mod your wii with a chip like a xenowii mod chip which controls the laser, now anyone who has wasted (oops WAITED) months to get their wii is not going to risk that £180 and 6 months to play a back up worth £35. forget this dumper ever existed. (oh and did i mention that the modded chip costs quite a lot too).
Hope this could be of srevice. - wolfwood278, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would also like to add that Voiding the warranty of your console just to run your 'backups' isn't what I would call a good idea. Risking the system to keep your disks 'Perfect' is just silly. And your one step closer to being a full blown pirate at that point, given how easy it is to find the games or copy the games.
- ibetterhacker, on 12/16/2008, -0/+0ha.. u know nothing of twilight hack??? u need to research before u answer! Use twilight hack and bootloader to play iso backups... only conflict is the internet: it needs to be disabled for ur wii or Nintendo will brick u (apparently). Also if ur wii firmware is past 1.3.3 or somthing like that u cant do hack, but its a soft-mod, no ***** with ur wii's sensitive hardware. look it up on utube!
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2No kidding! Switching disks around sucks.
When the Wii finally is modded enough to let me load the discs onto the hard drive (or an external hard drive), *then* I'll consider buying one.
Not before that. - JorgeGonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If you can't burn and play, then wtf is the point? 50+ hours just to fill hard drive space. I don't get it.
- wolfwood278, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I had a comment typed up and ready to go before I read all the other comments. Now after reading the comments I'm going to say something else.
I see now whats going on, these savvy computer users like backups. They have this idea that they should be able to make a legal copy of their stuff. So much so that they do it just cause they think they are right, not cause they really need to backup anything. They hide this behind the "accidents happen" idea. If you put the disk in harms way then accidents will happen. I haven't messed a disk up so bad it wont work sense the early PS1 days. Ive never felt that I had to back up games in-case I had an 'accident' with the disk. So with that mentality the only reason I see for backups is Piracy.
Sure some of you have kids and pets, and I bet you lock the low cabinets so they cant get into the cleaning supplies. So why leave your games out where they can get to them? Some of you have guests over quite often. Maybe your brothers/roommates friends you don't know. Why not lock your games up if your worried about them getting stolen? Some of you travel and like to take your games with you, I to have traveled a bit and if you take extra care in packing and paying attention to your belongings then having them lost or stolen shouldn't be a problem.
Ive lost quite a bit of stuff in my life: expensive sunglasses, pocket knives, nice pens, etc.. Ive broken or messed up just as many things. Whether it was an accident or not I've always blamed myself. So I go out and re-purchase said items. To me its the same with games, if you break it or lose it then you should have to buy it again. As Punishment for not being careful enough.
Pirates are feeding off the stupidity of others. If everyone were more careful then the need for people finding out ways to backup, and thus pirate games wouldn't be so great.
I would also like to point out that everyone who feels like me is being dug down. That says something about the people using the internet now'a days. -
