- sphinx13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42Might be nice if the interviewer wasn't such a jackass.
- DiggityDugged, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41Aw *****! For the Diggamers who are reading this - this is NOT harping on the Wii, just cool, similar technology. Spare me almighty fanboys!!
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33The guy seems very passionate about it. Good luck to him and this technology, people are so busy looking at gloves that let you control simple mouse movements, that they forget that there are, as he explained it (simple hacks).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Stupid camera man SHUT UP and stop interrupting, let the guy talk.
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -13/+32Wow what could possibly make gaming online better than to actually have 12 year olds flicking you off on XBLive?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Good lord, could that interviewer be any more annoying? "WAIT SO YOU'RE NOT USING YOUR HANDS, THERE'S NO REMOTE CONTROL..!!" Geez, he's talking like the guy is performing wizardry. It's not THAT hard to believe. Shut up.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20The [insert OS here] fanboys are gonna bury this cause he's usin' XP.
Cool software, I digg it. - Etaoin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The very act of burying your spam-ass comment caused my browser to freeze up. I hope an anvil falls on your head. Seriously, there are better ways of spreading whatever message you're into.
- hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -11/+21Getting...closer....to...Minority Report!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Thanks for freezing my browser momentarily; and welcome to my block list!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Ohhh, you mean "Eye of Judgment", the new PS3 game that uses the eye-toy.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3166063496020415395 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10This sounds really cool. One has to wonder what the next generation of consoles will bring now that Wii has pushed the envelope with motion sensing. Or possible even later on this generation.
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I was gonna say, “What, no Minority Report reference yet?” when I RTFA lol
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Are you sure you read the current article my friend? Either that or you must be drunk or something.
- Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'm not quite sure how this competes with the wiimote. It's a cool use of technology, but Wiimotes are for Wiis. If you're playing Xbox (which the video doesn't even mention games) are you going to have a camera mounted to the ceiling so you can use this?
- ccheaton, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14Didn't Sony already do this with the Eye Toy?
- hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4it will be interesting when they can play some shoot em up games with this camera
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6still misses they point. it's not a stock interface peice, therefore most devs won't use it. besides, without the accelerometers it's hard to get a sense of depth in the control. it is pretty cool sounding though.
- cannabinemsi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4looks like eye toy on the ceiling. gesture-detection isn't really a new thing for cameras to do...it even wasn't new when eye toy did it.
- sephiroth4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3just sayin'
Multi-Touch (Apple will use it)
http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/
Prime Sense (Sony will probably use it)
http://www.primesense.com/ - marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There's tonnes of patents of ***** like this. This guy will have to dodge lawyers for 20 years if they release this.
- whalefarmerjohn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I love the powerglove. It's so bad.
- CitizenKane, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5thank you for making me use my scroll bar
- DeathDefi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I saw he had on a Infocom shirt..................... "Want some Rye? Course you do!"
- masterthiefster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One word: lightsaber.
I can definitely see this in the next Jedi Knight game, or, heck, The Elder Scrolls for that matter. A mere $30 for interactivity this intuitive? I'm so there.
As for it not being able to detect the third dimension, this could be done by aligning two cameras appropriately. There was a demo along these lines at X '06 (using Xbox 360 Live Vision cameras). - omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could see this used for emotes in chatrooms.
"I (literally) put on my robe and wizard hat" - deadowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds something like the power glove at first glance. However, I wouldn't implant a Microsoft chip in my wrist after NSA_KEY
- sark666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a really cool hack, even if no more complex gestures get added.
By just making that shape you could have control of the mouse pointer. Sometimes with both hands at the home location on the keyboard, it's annoying to have to quickly grab the mouse for that one thing and then go back to the home position. Imagine, just quickly being able to make that closed hand gesture and move that file out of the way, or drag something quickly into focus. - bmcnett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as evidenced by EyeToy for PS2, cameras & CPU cycles are already cheap enough to sell a camera GUI in the mass market. the reason why camera GUIs haven't taken off is that they are very picky about the placement of the camera, the placement of the user, lighting conditions, and even the colors of one's clothing. The advantage of a Wii controller is that it works in a far wider variety of conditions.
EyeToy ran in living rooms, roughly 2-3 meters away from the user. this dictated upper-body capture in which only arms (and sometimes head) moved. a moving torso would likely move out of frame, or cause the user's eyes to move such that the TV couldn't be seen.
A PC web camera runs in a study, roughly 2-3 feet from the user. since the screen is fairly small, the user can't go very far away and still see what's happening on-screen. upper-body capture would be difficult at such close range, but hand or face capture is possible.
hand capture has the disadvantage that it is already pretty similar to a mouse interface, which already works pretty well and which everyone already has. face capture has the problem that there isn't much to capture, other than the mood of the user. it's hard to imagine a fun game in which wiggling ears and twitching eyebrows control the action. - igdrasa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Minority report? look at ubiq windows, that ***** is minority report.
- IllBeBack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmmm, grabbing files by their nipples? That's something I won't be able to erase from my synapses forever. Thanks...
- MrContent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1diggitydugged : Not many people know what you are talking about :D
For the others : http://www.wulffmorgenthaler.com/ - AttackingHobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How does it click....
- jasonpoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This guy is an ex-Microsoft staff, right?
- echonull, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Not really comparable to the Wiimote in most ways, but seems to be an interesting no-touch alternative to things like the FIRT multitouch screen NYU's been working on. (http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/ and http://www.macrumors.com/2007/02/12/more-multitouch-from-jeff-han/). In fact, the gesture-to-action mapping seems very similar, though the gestures (visual pinch of fingers vs. a touch on the FIRT screen) is drastically different. Interesting....
- gfixler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are somewhat more advanced things you can already do on your own in environments like Processing, which is free, open source, has been out for a few years, and works with firewire cameras, or prerecorded movies. These folks have made it turn your hands' silhouettes into dinosaur monsters: http://www.worthersoriginal.com/viki/#page=shadowmonsters
I'm not sure where it went, but I saw a Processing sketch wherein some guy had virtual objects fall on the screen - it might have been circles - and he could use his cupped hand via the camera's live capture to catch them in a composited view. The objects filled up his cupped hand. Another guy could shoot bugs, or flames out of his fingertips. The reason we haven't seen more amazing things yet is that we just haven't yet used the many tools already available to us to make these things happen. Minority Report's interface isn't a pipe dream. We just have to iterate through the problems, and spend the time on it, and it'll happen, but instead we're all on Digg :) - koko775, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it's a reference to the nintendo powerglove.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Glove - echonull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When the thumb and forefinger meet, the software dealing with the camera input recognizes the oval formed, and registers it as a tap at that location.
- Detritus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well how else are you going to increment an integer cell on a spreadsheet besides tweaking the nipple? Clockwise to increment, counter to decrement.
If you want to delete some portion of the spreadsheet just give the nipple a firm tug, but to clear the whole spreadsheet you'll have to really squeeze and vigorously abuse the nipple with a back and forth motion or as we like to call it in the office "chafing the nipple".
Don't be so sensitive, nipple. - henrythehorse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What does the Wii mote have to do with a PC peripheral? And most importantly who cares about Microsoft?
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Did he say "grab files by the nipples"? Sure, previous software pioneers have chosen interesting terminology like "finger", "mount", and "touch", but please please don't let this new terminology stick.

I actually used the Wii for the first time this weekend, and it was amazing. it made me realize that we are actually heading towards a time when you can be IN the game.
The Wii is more advanced than the PS3, for that siple reason.
If Microsoft is working on this, great.
- J - TheMaxzilla, on 07/30/2008, -0/+0Lightsaber FTW
- GamingInstinct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Virtual mousing. Look ma, no mouse!
- digitalkaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All this is going to do is form a new type of problem for people. Mice and keyboards cause carpal-tunnel syndrome, this is going to cause some retarted disfunction that causes everyone pain and misery.
Also, you're going to look like a masturbating fool in public waving your hands all over the place.
The problem with engineers these days is they can't keep anything simple. - mvannatter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Unbelievable! Host is down.
- pastasauce, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4It's been done before... Just not the same method. Also more relevant to Nintendo.
http://www.zerosign.net/index.php/powerglove-mouse/ - Br0wn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The technology is cool and all but will it even be that useful? It might be fun for a day but would you want to be sitting there for hours straight playing a game waving your hands around a keyboard? And how are you going to keep your right hand free for your second favorite hobby?
- TheMaxzilla, on 07/30/2008, -0/+0Don't hold your breath...
