- Mousse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+57They should've replaced both analog sticks with trackballs.
That way Sony could say: "Don't play with your 'Wii' controller when you can play using a controller with REAL balls!" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41did you just say "so many people are used to trackballs"??
there are like 3 people in the world who still use them. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+38Gross design... Makes me want to puke!
- homeobocks, on 10/12/2007, -12/+35IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE BOOMERANG.
- jobobshishkabob, on 10/12/2007, -13/+36better than the Wii? WTF ru talking about?
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Digg for inovation.
- PRESS_00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18The PS3 has usb ports. Let us use usb mice and keyboards for our console shooters, already!
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I think its the color and the big ass trackball...
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10the 360 has ubs ports too. no games really use keyboard/mouse, but thats not to say they wont!
- LemonHerb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I've been using a trackball for a little over a decade, my thumb still works. I never had trouble playing FPS games with them either.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13It's still a prototype.
I think the trackball could stand to be a little smaller, and then the thing wouldn't look so ridiculous. - Poco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ya, but then no one would have read it.
- pfister_, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Better headline would've been: TRACKBALL PS2 CONTROLLER
- Bara, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Now let's see this for Xbox 360, the kind of shooters, and I'll be happy :D
Bara out - CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14"Still better then the Wii controller"
Are you on drugs? - negativenancy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It looks like a DualShock2 with a tumor :(
- sgtpinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yep, add M/K support to the PS3, and call it a 'PC' :P
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11yikes?!? WTF This is a GREAT idea. So many people are used to trackballs that this is a natural migration for them. Games other than FPS can utilize the trackball to. ALthough, how many centepide clones do we want.
- knupso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I watched a video of the E3 coverage with Metroid on the Wii. While I believe the wii controller is an improvement for FPS on the console it still looked like it lacked the fine controll of the keyboard/mouse combo
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"Mouse-Keyboard is the best and will remain the best for a long long time."
I can easily see the Wii controller trumping the mouse/keyboard configuration for things like FPSs that m/k has ruled so far. It's the only controller that I can see taking that top spot, though. - Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5man, that is cool
for anyone who misses the point: (in first person shooters aiming, and similar control, where you are directly affecting the position of an object not the acceleration)
when you move a mouse, or a trackball, the onscreen pointer or aimer moves at a directly equivalent speed
when you move an analogue stick, the onscreen pointer/aimer moves at a speed equivalent to the distance from home position, which is an unhelpful extra layer of abstraction
of course, an analogue stick is better for moving, say in Mario 64 - having one of each is sweet
not if they the put the l&r buttons in a place more comfortable for my hands... - narlzac85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I actually like the dual shock. I don't see what the probably is that some people have with the analog sticks, if anything, the xbox has a worse placement in my opinion since on the the sticks is in the same place and the other isn't. Why isn't it symmetrical? My hands are.
- black|math, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I remember seeing something along these lines for PS2.
I was hoping it would be released so when I play Socom there is more killing and less running in circles shooting at each other. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I disagree, I found the DS in General to be vary hard to use Left-Handed.
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That card game looks pretty badass. That is a very very interesting idea. Anything can be done like that as well. I know it sounds stupid, but just think ROCK PAPER SCISSORS EYETOY
- sergio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Three systems and it's still the worst D-pad ever. This slightly improves it.
- StevethePirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Umm, has anyone ever used a trackball for counterstrike? I wanted to kill myself. And don't tell me I need to get used to it; by the time i hit 3-50, i decided that trackballs suck.
- Saint3k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's not a tumor!
- 1randomnumber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ha HA! Finally, the trackball gets some respect. I use a trackball at all the LANs I go to (granted, it's a trackball used with 2 or 3 fingers instead of a thumb), but I swear up and down I have better control than with a mouse.
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5am I hungry or does that first controller look like chocolate?
- DJSourMonkE, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That new Eyetoy card game thing looks sweet but since it's an add-on and not a standard part of the console, I don't think it will be used to the effect that the Wii's controller will be. So far there's 2 things keeping me interested in the PS3, Assassin's Creed and that Eyetoy card game demonstration during the press conference. Still those aren't worth $600.
- zukeft, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6It's as simple as this; some games are best played with a control while others are best played with a mouse and keyboard. I personally don't like trackballs since they wear you down (the joints in your thumb start hurting after a while). Trackballs lack precision and spatial acquaintance which is essential for gaming; for exzmple, how much do you have to roll the ball to, say, turn 35° to your left? Is it possible to measure that? So the same also applies to analog controllers, but this has more to do with the stick tilt and time activated. Personally I prefer an anlog controller because it's much more comfortable. The BodieLobus is a good try, but honestly doesn't interest me.
- themuffinman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's on the front page because it's an interesting idea. It's not your typical madcatz clone gamepad. I for one think that this go far if implemented well, probably only if it came out as a first party kind of deal though. Anyways, it's not the preview that got dugg, but the concept.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That controller looks like it's suffering from some sort of disease. At least make the trackball black or something.
- rmal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6That's not new, a trackball has been out for the Master System for almost 20 years.
http://bto8.smspower.org/segapower/sppad/index.html, couldn't find any US sites with information on it, but I have two of them and they suck. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You pretty much just described the ergonomics of a Gamecube controller. ;D
- redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't see how, they took out vibration.
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.accelenation.com/?im.vw.4165
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Of course a trackerball is inferior to mouse/keyboard
If they weren't then all the PC gamers would be using a trackerball instead of a mouse - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm still trying to figure out how you would turn.
Do you motion the wiimote to the side? Do you tilt it? Or is the nunchaku your "mouselook" and the wiimote (gun) completely seperate? I wish I went to E3. =*( - AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What should the ps3 controller be?
Simple... The wiimote, thats what they intended afterall.
but seriously, a trackball? that's a terrible idea. - nytechy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that is one hell of a fugly ass controller...I would stop playing games if I had to use that thing.
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dual Shock 2 is most comfortable for me as a leftie. Symmetry is an important factor.
- superpendejo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i actually believe the boomerang controller might have worked good. it might have looked funky but i believe if people would have actually gotten hands on witht the control they would have changed their mind. i personally believe it would have made a good controller.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Simply amazing, considering unless you went to E3, you wouldn't have touched one yet.
- cryonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1one thing id like to see is something simple. nothing flashy something MAC'y (but not geometric!!! god, no geometry in my hands, its all organic!). something easy to hold, light but strong. i dont know about you but on the ps2 controller i dont have 2 fingers on the shoulder buttons (the LR buttons) i just use my index fingers for both 1 and 2. becuase holding with 2 fingers makes my hand stress. also some clearance on the under side for the unused fingers to rest. there is a hard edge under the analog cylinders that digg into my middle fingers when at rest. though the duel shock controller is one of the best its still not perfect, and needs some improvements.
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this would probably be very unnatural for driving games like GT4.
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Compared to the dualshock, it looks like a hand cramper.
