- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+91I've been playing violent video games since I was a kid, and I've only busted a cap in 1 ho since fo' sho.
- bryant, on 10/12/2007, -16/+94It's still probably not a good idea to get your kid GTA San Andreas, though.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60"Ban Pants!"
Ive been saying that to women for years! - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -10/+61Its all about the parents. It's so easy to mointer what they're doing... simply put the computer in a high traffic area of the house so you can check up on them and make sure you talk with them about the kinds of games they play. Participate!
If your kid is a phyco angry goth kid, then yeah, maybe its not a good idea if they play shoot em ups, and all you do is you stop them or remove their computer privledges. And yes, you own the house and you CAN remove the computer if they don't listen.
If a parent lets a kid play a game and they do something wrong, its the parent and the kids fault not the game. I'm getting sick and tired of the "games made me do it" excuse that they're giving, and the fact that every news report always mentions that a kid plays games when they do something bad. Comeon, what kid DOESN'T play games these days? I bet all the kids wear pants too. Pants make you want to kill people! BAN PANTS! - drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48Video games may be good for children, but children are the ones that ruin every game Blizzard puts out and makes them BAD for adults!
- FuZ3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29To elaborate on my previous post:
Example*
1. Ice cream sales elevate greatly each June
2. Car thefts elevate each July.
3. Therefore: higher ice cream consumption causes more cars to be stolen.
Although I dont think that video games are that good or bad for anybody. It's just another "Waste of time" like going to the movies, or listening to music.

"Video games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac Man affected us as kids, we'd all run around in a darkened room munching pills and listening to repetitive music. - Kristian Wilson, CEO at Nintendo Gaming Corporation Inc." - scruffmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Back when I was in third grade, a kid bit someone after playing too much pacman. He claimed he had just eaten the magic apple thing so he could bite anyone.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17At the very least video games are interactive, force kids to learn to read and recognize symbols, and encourage them to think critically - that is, if they're playing games that are appropriate for their age.
I watch my five year old watch television, and he literally turns into a zombie. His jaw goes slack, his eyes glaze over, and he sits and stares vacantly. As a result, I don't let him watch much TV. When he's playing a game - or helping me play a game (I wait for him to figure out how to solve puzzles in games like the Zelda series, which is too complicated for him to manage with the controller in the trickier bits) - he is thinking, up and moving around, suggesting solutions, and generally INTERacting. How can I complain? - liquidedge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21We play GTA: Vice City as GTA: Nice City. My son gets rewarded for being good, driving around town and not hitting people, and being an overall nice guy.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I'm going to go ahead and suggest you pay attention in English class, too.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Every time I think of stabbing someone in the face, I reach for my BFG instead.
- FuZ3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Yes, although the entire "Violent video games cause violent people" debate is based on virtually no facts and is one big Post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.
- caddoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Who do we believe? The people who say its bad for you, or those who say its good. I think people are agreeing with what they want to hear.

From my experiences you are more likely to encounter a psycho, angry NORMAL kid than you are a GOTH kid.
Just keep in mind when pointing fingers that it's usually the Jocks, Frat Boys, Homeboys, and Good Christian Youth that follow the strange, bookish, nerdy types home from school, beat the crap out of him and toss is book bag up a tree just because he's 'not like us'.
In all my years going to clubs, and parties, and just generally living the lifestyle, the only time I ever saw a Goth throw the first punch was when we caught some Homeboys (1 black, 1 white, 1 Italian) wearing expensive designer cloths and big silver crosses on their bling chains) attempting to rape a goth girl in the ally behind the club where we had to go smoke (no inside smoking in clubs in Toronto).
Goths are rarely, if ever, violent - the non-violence is as much part of Gothic culture as violence is part of Jock/ Frat Boy/Homeboys/Good Christian culture. The 'rejection of normal society' nowadays pretty much means that you stop being like the mass of the population, and instead become a non-violent, well educated, tolerant, caring individual that dresses like the undead/forces or darkness so that the rest of the world will stay the F**K away from you because you really don't want to deal with their bulls**t.
For context, I was active in the Goth scene for 10 years before I got married and had a kid - still a Goth inside, but incognito for work reasons. - gutterboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yeah video games are definitely good. If I didn't play video games growing up it would have been impossible for me to have the skills necessary to thwart wave after wave of winged creatures, smith my own swords, and woo women with multiple choice scenarios.

Since when are goth kids actually violent? Disturbed... angry... maybe... but violent... I think you better go check on the football team? - SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Why is it always assumed that violent video games cause normal children to be violent? Why has no one ever thoght that violent kids like and are attracted to playing violent video games?
- thepeggasus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Yes, and commercials don't influence us to buy anything either. : )
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Oh, the look of joy on my seven year old niece's face as she screams through the streets in Grand Theft Auto. That little nipper's going to be qute the gangsta some day, you betcha.
- Demarche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've always thought that games are actually a safe means of releasing violent urges in much the same way that contact sports are. I also happen to think that guys in particular are wired up to be competitive warriors/hunters/etc and have a natural need to express these emotions. As many have been saying here, what's important is perspective. It's easy to misinterpret a healthy venting to mean it's ok to release violent urges wherever and whenever; that's where socialization (read parenting) comes in. Socialization is the difference between a successful all-star football star role model and a womanizing abusive ogre just as it is the difference between a highly analytical, quick thinker and a homicidal school shooter.
- jammink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think the driving is the best part of the game.
- sinfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You call it faulty reasoning... then you use it to try to prove your point. Nice.

Very true, I over-generalized a bit on that one - my bad. - saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wii to the rescue!
- opnickc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Most gamers have. People play video games for intellectual stimulation. If I want mindless entertainment, I reach for the TV remote.
- sogracefully, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7it's probably okay if you're already teaching the kid to respect other human beings, and the kid is demonstrating some form of comprehending those ideas. violent videogames won't just turn a kid to the other side if it's already got a positive influence from the beginning, and even if the kid does turn evil, it wasn't the videogames anyway, it was some kind of schizotypal/antisocial tendency that would have been made apparent by something else at some point.
- vitas33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm tired of listening to people try to tell me what is or is not good for my child.
First off parents should actually be "ACTIVE" in their childs activities, be it outside or on the computer.
I let my daughter play games but I don't let her sit there and play for hours on end - 30-45 minutes tops then its time to go outside and kick the ball around.
She's 6 years old, she's played GTA:SA because she likes running over people, now do I think she's going to get in a car and go rollover some old lady in the parking lot? No way, she knows its all fake and the difference between right and wrong, just like in movies. She knows that "the dead people" on CSI that it's all fake. Just like she knows the difference between good and bad words. She never swears, the worst I have ever heard her say was "*****" because she spilled over a glass of juice and it slipped. She proceeded to cover her mouth and say "Sorry Daddy". I just chuckled and said "You know better." and she smiled and said "I know." That was 5 months ago.
I've been playing games for over 20 years now, started on Colleco, than Atari, than I had the best present of all an 8088 :) Back then before all the FPS, games made you think (SpaceQuest, Wasteland, StarFlight) so honestly at that age it was fun to figure out problems. And in ways it's made my creative side that much stronger growing up as now I'm a professional designer. So when all these studies come out and say "AHHHHHH THIS IS BAD FOR YOUR KIDS!" I take it with a grain of salt. - IMesh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I have been playing violent video games since I was 4 years old, I have never been in a fight or even thought about hurting anyone my whole life.
- bashar129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4frogger taught me how to cross the street...one lane at a time!
- ilitirit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Summary is clearly Inaccurate.
"Video Games ARE Good For Children"
vs
"computer games may actually be good for children" - itsallgeektome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8As long as it's done in moderation it can be a good thing. Like anything else, you have to take it on a case by case basis. Games CAN be social, CAN teach planning and critical thinking skills, CAN be a positive force in a child's life. And of course not all games are equal in these respects or appropriate for all children. (The same can be said for just about any activity).
This is where that thing called PARENTING comes into play. - SkepticalJS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@shanealeslie
Score one for dialogue. :) - MilitantRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Translation: GO ***** YOURSELF, JACK THOMPSON!
- Travelsonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Howsabout taking the views from the "it's good for you" and "it's bad for you" side and make a median opinoon: It's good for you some of the times, it is bad for you some of the time, it is ineffective some of the time as well.
- SkepticalJS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Generalizations are bad. Not all Christians/Frat Boys/Jocks are violent either.
- hazmat007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wow, it took a study to figure this out? isn't it funny the amount of money that the government spends on these studies to figure ***** out that is common sense to normal people. why not put the money towards something benefical like cancer research or something.
- MuffinMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Pros for FPS
Better Hand-Eye coordination
Advanced dexterity in hands.
Cons for FPS
Violent genre, may provide influence in terms of "violence = cool"
Pros for MMORPGs
Teaches work = reward
Teaches coordination & teamwork
Teaches communication skills between peers
Teaches faster typing skills for text based games
Cons for MMORPGs
Addictive behavior traits
Obsessive about fictional game world
Hermit like traits show themselves
If not taken in moderation can control player's life - catfive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Countdown to the study that refutes this study: 5... 4... 3...
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Video Games (if properly supervised.. no GTA stuff) can improve hand and eye coordination.
It is the parents job to sit down with the children and supervise what the kids are playing, and of course
know what they are buying for the kids. Parents SHOULD not go and just by the hottest game out there
based on word of mouth, they should investigate the contents and object of the game.
I think its a blast seeing kids play the classics (pac-man, frogger, etc) and enjoying themselves. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No causal link.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Figures. *deflates*
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hold the phone... you're telling me the government... our government... did something *good* for once?
Where're the four horsemen?! - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
Video games may be good for children, but children are the ones that ruin every game Blizzard puts out and makes them BAD for adults!
I think millions of adults would like to see more games made for adults, rather than geared towards twelve year-olds. Does the media even realize that the average age of PC gamers is 21-45? This audience is being completely ignored. - JeffT1545, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That depends...do you live in the UK? This study wasn't done by the American government.
- MuffinMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I only listed the categories off the top of my head which are most controversial. Its not as if puzzle games are on the table here. OH NOES! Censor Tetris!
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well the games may not cause you to develop any psychiatric disorders but it doesn't say that kids aren't likely to copy things out of the video games like: "***** you *****!" I hear kids say bad things from movies and video games all the time.
- XStatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just a shame more games don't take the opportunity to expose players to more match and science concepts to passively absorb.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't forget in 2008 that Hillary Clinton was one of Jack Thompson's supporters. That Hillary Clinton was one of those people who tried to pass a game censorship bill.
(And no, I'm not a Republican! Bush should be impeached!) -
