Did Nintendo welch on a promise?
This is dissappointing...but I guess the Nintendo Defense league will be out in force defending this as a "region-locking feature" or something. - FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Yes you did but a lot of you act as if you didn't.
- seanneko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You don't click the disc icons, it automatically detects the disc size that you inserted.
- jedikv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Too bad in this age of DVD media we cant rectify the problem the good old fashioned way:
File + Exacto Knife = import heaven - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8He should have tested to see if a freeloader works for wii games.
- currybet, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Yep, for sure if 360 or PS3 were region locking it would be called out as an evil conspiracy by the man.
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So which consoles would you own? There can't be many...
- hakujin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That is interesting, because I've read of success with 1.06b.
- Wobble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31 up had a video i beleive of them using freeloader for cube games. they fired up the japaneese version of of soul calibur 2 on the wii with out a problem.
- duxxyuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4excuse my language but I can only say one thing about nintendo and their region lock: Bastards.
- bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Essentially the same, Nintendo answered my email about that.
The only thing I dunno about is whether US and Canada use the same voltage in power outlets, so confirm your adaptor first before plugging.
I'm going to get a Wii from Canada, and I'm here in Japan. And buy games on expensive import styles. This is sadly the only way to get English games. This region locking is frustrating... it only alienates someone like me living in other regions. - erwanl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Who cares? You know, some people who don't spend their entire life in their native Texas. Some people happen to move for a few years to a different region, and in this case they are really f*cked.
I'm European, I've been living in Japan for 5 years and now I'm in the US. So basically if I buy a US Wii with a bunch of US games, and then I move to Japan, I will have to go back to the US when I want to buy new games? And I can't buy Japanese games even if I can read Japanese like English? (both are foreign languages to me).
It's already a pain in the arse for DVDs, I had to get a multizone DVD. But rednecks who never left their village can obviously not understand that. - bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't you think it's too much effort to be learning an entirely new language 'just' for a game?
Sure it's fruitful in the long run, but then again, Wii is for the family right? My family won't be darn willing to learn Japanese just to play with me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why would any game console manufacturer do this? Wouldn't it increase sales of games by NOT region-locking them???
- orb_nsc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess we'll just have to wait for the modchips to start coming out.
- LiquidIse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I emailed Datel (maker of the GC freeloader which DOES work on wii for GC games, I couldnt live without naruto 4) because i am dying to play bleach.
They said that that are working on a Wii loader and to keep checking their site f updates as they will have one up sooner or later. - petersms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@bluemist
Thanks for the reply and the advice; I'll be doubly sure to check the power plug before I just stick it into the wall.
Thanks. - Snay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I knew this in September, but yes, it is a bit of a pain.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=19686 - faclonX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Canada and the US both use 3 prong 110V AC, always have...
- Mugsleymug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always asumed it was because the handhelds have their own screens, so PAL/NTSC worries didn't exist. Infact, I'm fairly sure I'm right on that.
- MillenniumX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The DS doesn't either, but among the extant consoles those are the only three. Even if you go back through previous generations, region-locking in one form or another has been the norm ever since the days of the NES.
It is disappointing to see Nintendo break this promise. With the DS, they had finally gotten region-locking right (which is to say that they didn't do it at all). This is a step back for them. Perhaps it can be fixed in a future update, however: if Nintendo has changed its mind on this as much as it seems to have change it, then it is almost certainly implemented in software.
It's a slim hope, but it's hope. - koko775, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I always asumed it was because the handhelds have their own screens, so PAL/NTSC worries didn't exist. Infact, I'm fairly sure I'm right on that."
@Mugsleymug: Japan uses NTSC, like the US. Europe uses PAL. - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2zetsurin: The PSP dosen't really count as a console as its a handheld, and just about no handheld has had region locks.
However, in the issue of consoles, well, pretty much every console in history except for the PS3 has been region locked. NES, SNES, N64, GC, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, Xbox360, TG16, name it. The PS3 is the first console that isnt region locked, and thats only for PS3 games. DVDs, Blueray movies, PS1, and PS2 games are still region locked on a PS3.
So if you refuse to buy a region locked console your choices are quite limited... - Wratherin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A few things.
Notice as he switches to the Zelda disc the sound suddenly gets muffled.
He doesn't show him inserting it, that would be very easy (and obvious) to do, clearly something shady going on.
This same thing can be achieved by putting a disc in upside down. - beggersfunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well this really suck ass , i thought Wii is Region free...and crapp forget Zelda US version it won't work on my Japanese Wii.
- LiquidIse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only certain versions of the freeloader work on the wii, at my house i have 1.06b, and it is unrecognized, where as we have an older one here at college that works without issue
- petersms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I bought a Wii from Canada, can anyone confirm that the system will work in the US? I'm guessing it should since there are both NTSC, but would appreciate if anyone could confirm it for me.
Thanks. - icepick314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone tried to play Japanese games on US machine?
too bad some games like Bleach, which has good following in US due to anime series, has very little chance to show up in US market.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Wiigion Locked? omgrofl.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"I'd never own a console that region locked my games."
But you already *do*. Your precious PS3 still region-locks PS1 and PS2 games. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"It is disappointing to see Nintendo break this promise. With the DS, they had finally gotten region-locking right (which is to say that they didn't do it at all)."
What are you talking about? Nintendo has never locked their handhelds. The original GameBoy was region free, as every GameBoy to come since has been. I own a Japanese GameBoy Light and GBA (original non-lit version), and neither one has any problems playing US games. - mcr2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0who cares really?
region locking, big deal, be patient a buy stuff in your own country - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2"So which consoles would you own? There can't be many..."
Humor me. Which other consoles region lock the games? PSP and PS3 most certainly do not. - erwanl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0bluemist: rather than spending extra money to get English games, what about learning the language of the country you're living in?
(By the way, I also hate region locks as I don't know for how long I'll be living in the region I am now) - pernicat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0I think I remember reading that PAL formatted games can not play on a NTSC Wii and vise versa. Other then that it is region free.
- googzman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Thats the '.5' part of the GameCube 1.5 !
- thedenominator, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Erm... I could be wrong here as I don't have a Wii yet, but it sure looks like he's clicking on the Gamecube disc when he goes to start Zelda, to me. That along with the speed-up and the lack of qualifying shots is causing me to lean in the direction of this being a fake.
- Polymira, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2I'm not claiming this to be a fake. But you notice how he goes out of the shot before putting the game in?
- bilco, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2I was Region Locked last month ......... I got drunk on Wine in France
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Didn't we already know this?
- woogley, on 10/12/2007, -12/+31) the video looks fake.. as someone already stated, he never ejects the japanese game, and he doesn't show the zelda disc going into the Wii, all you see is the side shot of a CD (I can get the same error by putting in a blank CD). he should've had a top-down shot of the zelda cd being inserted into the wii without any speedup.
2) even if the vid is real, who cares if a japanese wii is region locked? how about testing an american wii please? maybe japan has tighter import laws than america does, but i'm not a lawyer.. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Wow, that's got to suck. I'd never own a console that region locked my games. Wii is definitely no go territory for me. That and because of the pathetic graphics and childish overrated games, that is.
