"I suppose you weren't around for the six years that a flash exploit existed in de_nuke. (That German owner story is bull btw)" - DE_NUKE WAS NOT MADE BY VALVE. Any bug is up to the creator.. no??
"I suppose you weren't around when CS:S was released for "Retail" with hardly any updates from its beta stage, they pushed out a game simply to get it out rather than make it good. CS:S has just recently become Retail worthy (still has some issues mind you) and it is more than a year later than its "Retail" release."
- I played CSS since the day it was out in BETA. I didn't experience any bugs that were harmful on gameplay. The retail version worked great.. and if it were so terrible, might I ask why it was (and still is!) #2 on the top games played on steam servers? Maybe it's just you...
"I suppose you haven't tried calling VALVE when you have an issue that can't be solved with their forums, that is because there is no number for you to call."
- Support Ticket system has worked fine for me. Why hasn't it for you?
"This mass update tool you speak of only updates problems when they feel like getting around to it. Most of the time they disregard major issues to fix some petty "fixed Gordon Freeman not being able to look a certain direction if you use a Rage2 Video Card in HL." then when they do this it causes more errors that were never existant before."
- Obviously you don't work in the game design industry, so I won't try to explain in too much detail on the complexity of creating a game and patching the big holes. The small fixes do not inhibit their ability to patch the big bugs. It takes time. They don't just make updates "when they feel like it", get real.
I could go on, but the rest is just more examples of VALVE support being bad and their company being less than honest most of the time.
- No, go on.. seriously.
- And when have they been dishonest?
I've been around the Half life modding community since 1998 when HL first came out. Never have I once experienced a support problem, and never have I experienced a bug so bad that altered the ability to play. Valve has so much support it's rediculous. Shall I list?

So you ... just want a phone number then???

You will find a phone number on THAT page, if it wasn't obvious enough.
--- - jmichaelg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Huh? The idea of a war sim is to have you believe you're fighting the battle, not watching a movie of someone else fighting the battle. Unless the "cinematic" effects are reserved for cutaways, I think it'll detract from the game.
- mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone seems to forget this is VALVE, and these features just get put in priority instead of fixing bugs and updating game content. The eye candy appeals to new comers or people who don't know better, but lack of real support and content disappoints more experienced players. Though my adventures with HL and its mods ended a year ago due to the lack of support, I won't come back now :)

- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** crazy badass :)
- LiThiuMElectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can sure do good thing with the HL2 engine after all. I was a bit disappointed with the result of HL2 and Counter-strike: Source myself. But some people know how to work those thing i guess. Nice engine nice new development. Let's see if the game wort playing now.
Nice cinematic but nice game play?.
Can't wait to see how Unreal.engine 3 will do to counter weight these new developments. - The_Pope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait to see what the Machinima community do with this stuff - the Depth of Field feature alone is capable of SO much!!
- schneb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the most important advance is DOF and motion blur. What made the original King Kong so robotic looking? Lack of motion blur. Go-motion was the first breakthrough, but now CGI has really added quality motion blur. Good for them!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0omg
- pashdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome effects. I can't wait until they start work on filters that will make games look like 80's TV and Amiga quality. Maybe a pixelizer to "blockify" the antialiasing and lower the high resolution of my modern screen.

Are there any decent sites/tutorials around for doing machinima with HL/Source? I've poked around a bit but haven't seen much that would start me down the road of using the complex interfaces for setting that kind of stuff up... - LiThiuMElectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Everyone seems to forget this is VALVE, and these features just get put in priority instead of fixing bugs and updating game content. Good point here but VALVE have their priority somewhere else I guess. Because they know that people buy the eye candy most of the time and not the game play. Because people are naive "look at this game it look awesome"(great cinematic, good graphic and supposedly good company). I know people who will pay 100$ for a game because it's beautiful and the game play is "*****".
On the other and you have the guy who played Q3 and UT* with no textures, effect NOTHING and he was happy because the game play was good on this game.
So valve aim for those hey candy buyer and the real player after i guess. - Bega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see why you guys are hating on Valve so much. I mean, they're the guys that made Half-life 2, which in my mind, is the best first person shooter of all time. Sure, there are a few bugs, but let me ask you when was the last time that counter-strike or hl2 crashed for you?
Anyway, these effects are awesome. I've gotta say it may not help me play better, but it certainly makes me feel more like I'm actually in there, and that is what valve is trying to achieve. - Tony_42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, those effects looks amazing.
But I really don't know what people are complaining about. Valve releases bug fixes and features all the time, even though there are few bugs to begin with. They have the best looking engine I've seen, and it performs way better than doom 3 or F.E.A.R. - spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Everyone seems to forget this is VALVE, and these features just get put in priority instead of fixing bugs and updating game content. .... Valve has the best support of any game company I know of.... who else updates on demand via a platform such as steam?
Their support is HUGE. - Chiablo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's what's retarded. They are enabling all of these special effects for their multiplayer games. If I'm going to play multiplayer, I will disable these effects because they directly effect both my framerate and what I see.
Valve needs to start applying these effects to the single player Half Life 2, that way I can actually experience these effects instead of me turning them off as soon as possible. - mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also apologize for my lack of any English skill in my post above :(
- kwilliam71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know about "utterly mind blowing," but it looks like some good stuff.

- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i loved hl2, but i'm staying firmly with cs 1.6. The hdr implementation is all flash but doesn't look any more "realistic" to me. cs:s continues to be buggy and horrible at network performance.
valve clearly needs to continue developing top notch single players, and let another more experienced network team handle its online implementations. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whats up with everyone hating on Valve? I dont have any problems with them, and they release good updates every once in awhile. If your whining about Valve sucking so much the get a kickass gaming rig because I have one and I dont seem to have many problems with any of the games I play. Although the only thing I dont really like is HDR, to realistic, I just wanna play the damn game. And CS:Source kicksass.
- lava, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can somebody put the movie files online somewhere? I've been waiting for a while to download.
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When CS first came out it was full of bugs.. over time, it has been perfected..
Which is why I am a firm believer that the same will happen to DOD S and CSS.. it will just get better as time goes on.. - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks pretty cool... downloading the movie right now. I'm all for realism in games (Day of Defeat is a game I really enjoy right now), but I have a feeling that this update would impact my ubersniping skills a bit.
- rlutterb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These will be nice additions to the arsenal of designers, but of course, the danger is overuse/using in the right instances.
What are we trying to emulate? Real life, or film? Real life doesn't have motion blur, however we are very used to and comfortable with seeing it on the big screen. Same with HDR... in both film and RL, camera lenses and eyes must adjust when light intensity changes, so I have even less problem with that.
The hairiest one is the depth of field... i would put forth that you would RARELY want to use this effect, especially in the FPS world. When depth of field is used, you are effectively "locking down" the players focal length, which would never happen in real life. For gameplay this would be horrible. The effect shown of having your gun blurry when you are looking up in the sky? No... it looks cool in static image, or in a cutscene, but not for gameplay. This "cool" effect will be destroyed the second I want to check out the detail of my gun.
This is why some 3D films like 3D IMAX and such never seem quite right... it's depth of field. Especially in 3D, there is not really a need for adding this effect... your own two eyes do it for you. - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a kick ass gaming rig.
I run the Lost Coast level with all effects on and maxed at 1600x1200 with 4xAA/8xAF
The reason im hating on Valve is simple, im not a fan of their work. I bought Half Life, I bought Half Life 2, they were ok but nothing I would call revolutionary and if i had the choice I wouldnt buy them again. Now they are adding these features to the engine would should have been in it already, they should have been a part of the HL2 gameplay. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not "giddy" over it but it still looks cool as hell and a cool way to play the game. I loved the old Day of Defeat and this one looks even better.

good for you - musenross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"..arguably the best multiplayer World War II shooter around.."
Honestly sounds pretty much like a fanboy article to me. Cinematic effects per se don't make a mediocre game good. You can probably argue extensively about Day of Defeat: Source's horrendous changes to gameplay (not even CS:S changed that much) and its steep retail price. After all it's seems to be just a polished but awkward rehash of an once inspiring Half-Life mod. Apparently an extensive part the DOD community seems to think that way and Valve apparently needs to resort to marketing ploys and the use of funky cool graphics effects to lure new fresh recruits on board. Cinematic? hardly. Just my 2 cents. - binarystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that grain effect would be nice if it was night time and stuff.
- MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While the graphics are nice to have, gameplay is the most important to keeping a community alive. Day of Defeat: Source hasn't yet been widely accepted, so adding graphics won't do much to woo the potential customers away from other available games.
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"and its steep retail price"
^ Dod is what... $20 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting I suppose, I don't have a card that would take advantage although I know for a fact that if I did I'd end up playing with the effects on for a while just for the fun of it. But of course would turn such effects off for long term play anyway.
and @ al the Valve flaming/fanboyism stuff well..
To be fair they update and support very well and have some of the best modding resources around.
See how many half life 1 mods popped up and how many interesting new mods have cropped up for half life 2.
he source engine is nice in that it looks very nice on new hardware but has the ability to run a decent framerate (without looking/performing like a total dog on midrange to low hardware)
Heck I decided to try out mapping for css, and the tutorials around can get you making functional stuff before too long. (I've only made simple, weird etc type maps before though. Such as a scaled up motherboard with the cpu and cards etc in it towering way above the players using custom textures)
I've rambled enough for now! - ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Downloading the movie now, the Screens look great though. I just wish they'd spend equal time on Counter Strike: Source :)

- el3ctro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0+DIGG FOOOOOL
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I guess oltompic would like some examples...
Depth of Field -Splinter Cell on Xbox like 3 years ago
Motion Blue - Cant remember the name of the game but it was also on Xbox like 3 years ago, and most current xbox360 games use it as well
HDR Lighting is being used on just about every 360 exclusive launch title, it was also used on a couple Xbox racing games in the last year.
So no I dont think its a big deal Valve is now add'ing these features into their already dead engine, anyone see that engine called Unreal 3.0? Valve is in trouble, their 5 year baby is about to be stomped and all they can do is try and add in little effects when they should be starting over...but wait theres more!
Whats this, they are adding a film grain effects?! Oh you mean like the one in Silent Hill 2? Which was a near launch title for PS2 5 years ago!
Dust Effects? OMFG NO WAY! They have only been around for a good 4 years on Xbox and PS2
Color Correction? Oh you mean like those filters that have been in the ATI drivers for the last couple years?
Give me a break, anyone getting all giddy over these tweaks needs their head examined. - Nullifidian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I have a kick ass gaming rig.

In short; Valve SUCK. HDR is not in any way shape or form a "realistic" effect. If you see things as HDR works, you need an eyesight test because clearly your eyes can't adjust to light properly and instantly.
To reiterate; Valve SUCK.
