- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -9/+44Unreal 4 will be pretty much dedicated to the console cycle, why dumb themselves down when they can take advantage of PCs?
PC gaming made EPIC what they are today, they thank us in one hand and stab us in the back with another. - dadaguru, on 07/28/2008, -1/+30I heard that Duke Nukem 4Ever will be using the Unreal 4 engine.
- GlitchEnzo, on 07/28/2008, -1/+23The article says 2012 at the EARLIEST. It says it will debut anywhere between 2012 and 2018. Stupid misleading headline that just "happens" to cut off the quote right before he states that.
- Shogi, on 07/27/2008, -2/+23Nah, I think not. Unreal Engine 3 is one of the best engines ever made. Ever. Tremendously flexible, extremely scalable, very stable, and gorgeous.
It's behind some of the best games in the past couple years and some to come:
Bioshock
Borderlands
DC Universe Online
Gears of War 1/2
Rainbow Six Vegas 1/2
Lost Odyssey
Mass Effect
many many more...
Not to mention the non-gaming uses. Regardless of your personal feelings about their focus as of late, you have to respect an amazing accomplishment. - l0k0, on 07/28/2008, -3/+24The answer is simple: $$. UT3 was a disappointment and Gears was ported rather poorly to the PC. The final nail was Cliffy B's "disarray" comment. As a PC gamer, I don't like it either, but it's understandable. Besides, it seems the games they are making themselves are increasingly more suited towards consoles anyways.
- PATSCRU, on 07/28/2008, -2/+22But can it run crysis?
- myshl0ng, on 07/28/2008, -0/+10Don`t give a ***** about Epic nor UE since they said "fu lol, get a console" to the pc gamers.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+9Sure, UT3 was a flop... but Unreal Engine 3 has had some great successes. I hope Epic continues (Though I do wish they would release some expansions and patches for UT3)
- PATSCRU, on 07/28/2008, -1/+10Totally agree with sion. While one can't argue with profits to be made in console world, Epic can't deny that PC's and PC gamers made Epic the company they are today. Where would Epic be without the huge userbase formed by thousands of dillegent modders cranking out endless Unreal Tournament maps making that series endlessly playable?
None of that means anything to Epic, apprently, as they continue to slap their PC gaming base in the face with spiteful comments about PC gaming and negligible PC support. (UT3 didn't fail because it was a bad game, it failed because it was poorly supported and terribly marketed. There was a huge prerelease hype for that game, and for Epic to squander that means that they simply didn't care for that non-console release). You are a company who has lost your soul Epic, Call me when you care. - thrallie, on 07/28/2008, -0/+9I didn't pirate UT3, I bought it. I still play it and I like it, but I guess I am the only one on digg. It's amazing how digg users hate every game out there but at first love it. Like with GTA IV, everyone was freaking out over it but now the comments in any GTA IV story are all negative. Do people have too high of standards or what. UT3 is fun to me, and games are supposed to be fun. Wow, it's missing a feature 2004 didn't have! Big ***** deal.
I do hate epic for their decision to say ***** you to the PC. I hope they at least have a Unreal Engine 4 for the PC, even if it happens later on. - Stieffers, on 07/28/2008, -0/+8Unreal Engine is not the same thing as Unreal Tournament / Unreal. The games are simply built using the Unreal Engine. Unreal tech is were Epic is bringing in the cash these days.
- Shogi, on 07/27/2008, -1/+9Do you even know what you're talking about?
On second thought, you don't need to answer that. - mrmorris, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7Very disappointed by UT3. Not at all the fun gameplay from UT2004.
- SpongeBob88, on 07/27/2008, -13/+20I used to love Epic and I couldn't wait for the 3rd engine and more specifically the UT3. I had wet dreams in anticipation of that *****. The obvious shift towards console gaming was a huge slap in the face to me, and PC gamers everywhere. Also, please don't forget about the lack of the Linux installer which was promised shortly after release(7 months later now and still missing).
I had hopes that they would fix their mistakes after the obvious flop, but when the evidence points the other way please help me say
***** EPIC - OJXs, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7You are an idiot. Here are some games that use the U3 engine
Bioshock, Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge, Devil May Cry 4, Gears of War
All these games run well on a $500 PC
Now what about the CryEngine? - WhereAmI, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scimitar_(game_engine ...
Assassins Creed doesn't use the Unreal Engine. - Evilblobs, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6Yeah Crysis's 1,000,000+ sales count is real shabby, for a game only mid-high end hardware could run(say 600$ hardware comp) beyond low settings.
And Sins of a Solar Empire without any copy protection, little advertising, and from an indie developer (I didnt think the game was all that great personally), took the lead in PC sales.
"I know people who've lost homes to piracy..." - GlitchEnzo, on 07/28/2008, -1/+7Final Fantasy isn't using the Unreal Engine.
- mustang460, on 07/28/2008, -1/+6"Valve: Why the PC is the future"
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=16 ... - twigboy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5curse EPIC for making UT3 more geared towards console, making the PC version utterly horrible to play.
- RandoTheKing, on 07/28/2008, -1/+6I personally don't have a problem with the Unreal Engine. I love how easy it is to mod from a gamer's stand point.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5I say 2012 release with half the features they plan on releasing.
- ArmandoM, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5If they'd just make a better controller I'm all for console gaming.
As long as I can't use a keyboard+mouse for control though, I'll stick with my PC. There's just no comparison when it comes to control. - inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5And you know this from all your development experience?
- norman619, on 07/28/2008, -3/+7I knew the Mayans were on to something!
- KaiUno, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4In 2012, you might be right.
- l0k0, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4I like the CryEngine, but UE has many more things going for it. For example, consoles are actually capable of using it, it is a proven multi platform contender, is licensed like crazy, and is extremely flexible. Few engines could possibly pull off should a diverse group of games from Bioshock to Assassins Creed. This isn't really an insult to Crytek but their engine simply isn't one of them. Combine that with an outstanding editor and Unreal Script, and UE has a lot more advantages.
It's kind of an apples and oranges comparison, but they are still both solid overall. - billjimbob, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4What's with people thinking the next generation is going to start 7-8 years after this one? Hasn't the average lifespan of a console since pretty much the NES been 5 years? That would mean 2010 for the new Xbox, 2011 for the new PS/Nintendo.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4So what's the big deal... it's just another engine. Many games use UE3 and only a few are worth playing, like Bioshock. Unreal Tournament 3 sucks. CryEngine has good graphics but that's it, Crysis as a game is quite boring, but that's me.
Valve's Source is getting old now, gets some little upgrades and still provides the best games imho, just look at the games from The Orange Box, the upcoming L4D...and I'm pretty sure Episode 3 will be great, hopefully the next Portal too. - ChileanGoD, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4UT3 failed because it was dumbed down from UT2k4. I just can't get over at how much an unreal tournament game sucks without the double dodge.
- Gizza, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4"Wow, it's missing a feature 2004 didn't have! Big ***** deal."
That's exactly the point right there. Why the ***** would I buy a new game that has less than the previous one in better graphics. I don't give a ***** about better graphics if the game isn't anywhere near as fun. - guestaccount, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4Not pretty enough, they are waiting for 5.
- Jones82, on 07/29/2008, -1/+4Sony will go down in flames if they wait 10 years for the ps4
- WhereAmI, on 07/28/2008, -3/+6As opposed to the 7 months left on a new gaming rig.
- DyceFreak, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3I wonder if their marketing team is psychic...
to be able to see four years into the future.
I think what they are trying to say is,
"hey! Were not working on unreal engine 4 now, and PC's wont even get it so hows about all you fans just go to hell? Haha, maybe in 2012, losers"
I believe Windows 7 is due out before this... - Rosco, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3That's all right Epic, you keep making those engines for console games. I'll be right here, playing Source powered games from now on my PC.
The last greatest was UT'99.
Ha ha ha!
Oh Yea!
You like That? - TexasCanuck, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Unreal Engine 4. Bah.
Just wait for idTech 5. - ATLien74, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Duke would be such an awesome game if they ever released it.
- Evilblobs, on 07/28/2008, -3/+6Maybe by 2012, pitiful console hardware will actually be able to play at REAL HD resolutions...
PC kthxbye - Gerz1219, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4UE3 basically maxes out the current generation of console hardware. This isn't the PC, where there's a new top-of-the-line video card and CPU every six months. Epic can't really make any meaningful improvements to the engine until we have new hardware.
- jgtg32a, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3Mirror's Edge is on there as well, what ever engine DICE was going to use wasn't ready yet so they went w/ UE3
- christianw, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2whats sad is cliffy, sweeney, and rein used to have their fingers on the pulse of the pc industry. maybe they still do but if that was true, cliffy would be here in this thread himself telling everyone "relax, were not leaving the pc"
i guess cliffy's too busy moderating the sa forums and reading 4chan to care anymore.
im a little busted up about it tbh. i used to really look up to these guys.
maybe our best hope is to get lowtax into pc gaming so cliffy pushes the pc again. =/ - DeathRay2K, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2They haven't come out with any really great PC games for ~4 years.
- Gizza, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2*REAL HD*
- xNIBx, on 07/30/2008, -0/+2Here is a 350euros GAMING pc(in comparison, ps3 costs 400euros)
Case with 450w psu : 40€
Cpu : Intel E2180 2ghz 52.8€
Ram : Kingston 2gb pc6400 800mhz 35€
Motherboard : MSI P35 NEO-F 64.95€
Graphic Card: Sapphire Radeon HD3850 512MB 91.95€
Hard Disk : Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB 56€
Dvd-rw : NEC Optiarc AD-7203S Black 21.4€
Total : 361€
And this gaming pc is far superior than any consoles and have 5 to 10 times bigger storage and capabilities. If you spend 100euros more, you can get a nice quad core cpu and if you spend 50euros more you can get a nice 4850 gpu. So for 500euros you can get a totally kickass TOP OF THE LINE gaming pc.
Only retards buy expensive pcs. And a gaming pc can last 5+ years of solid gaming. My p4@2.4ghz and 9700pro lasted like 6 years or something. And i could play all the games that came out. PC GAMES CAN SCALE. So even if future games are heavier(but have pretier graphics), you will still be able to play them if you lower the resolution/details.
PS Prices include 19% VAT. - patm1987, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Yay, another ut3 fan on Digg!
I pre-ordered UT3 and is the best of the franchise in my opinion. I miss some levels from ut2k4, but the unmodded gameplay is more fun to me.
That being sad, I don't have high hopes for UT4 and what it would mean if the engine didn't make it to pc. I have a feeling that we only go the likes of Bioshock, Stranglehold, Gears of War, and Rainbow Six: Vegas because the Unreal 3 engine supported the PC platform. I remember when not only did Epic primarily support the PC market but they (along with ID and the nice people from Cedega) made my Linux gaming machine not only a valid choice but the optimal one (I got higher framerates on Linux - not true today but I don't use Gentoo anymore either). - PopASquatt, on 07/28/2008, -2/+4I don't care what the people behind these articles say. PC gaming is dying, and I for one am horrified to bare witness to such events.
Even Valve, the creators of Steam, are now putting more and more assets in console development. It's scary to see these major developers shift more and more towards the consoles while the PC community that had supported them for several years is now being left for dead because of ridiculous fears of piracy. We need more developers committed to PC development.
I know this is a topic simply concerning the Unreal Engine, but Epic being a PC superpower it once was has abandoned us in the rut of the console world. - twigboy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Thank you dupe patrol, I dont know what I'd ever do without you ...
Here's the door. - Evilblobs, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Pshh, a little overclocking now and then, and i make my systems last 3 years....
- Evilblobs, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2I think you mean Epic's game engine [which is honestly an amazing piece of work] supplied us some of the best games.
