- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+81XBOX 360 controllers are charged purely from hatred of Sony
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+72Then they bring their own selfish ***** cables.
- Kusgam, on 10/12/2007, -18/+78You get one with the console...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+67Printers haven't included them for years. My PSP included one and from memory all the digitcal cameras I've had have included them, but it's hardly unheard of to have to buy your own.
At least it's USB and not a proprietry plug on one end like iPods. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+73What happens when your friends come over and your buddies need to charge?
- epu2, on 10/12/2007, -12/+64they cost about 1$ and you probably have a ton at home anyway
- gizmogear, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43You get one... but it still feels a little dumb.
- isewise, on 10/12/2007, -7/+47And USB cables are soooo hard to find these days...
- ksuburke, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47The PS3 Also does not come packaged with a television, rendering it useless.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -12/+37Power cables? Every printer I've ever seen.
- gadgetlust, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Actually, at places like Future Shop and Best buy, these cables can cost upwards of $30. Dollar store FTW!
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -13/+34Wow, surprised by the Sony apologists here. Ya, the cable costs a buck, plus shipping... if you buy in a store then you're looking at $5-10 depending on location and brand. It's a sub-$1 wholesale item and Sony couldn't drop one in the $50 controller box? That's *****. The first time you have a day long gaming session with a friend or two and your batteries all die at once and you, being a typical console gamer, not a Digg reading computer guy, don't have any extra cables to charge them all with (or better yet keep playing tether while the charge) you're going to be pissed.
*****, for $600 I would expect they put 4 USB cables in the box for you! Oh, and the excuse 'you'd rather buy your own so Sony doesn't overcharge you' is BS, too. It should be FREE. The controller is $50 one way or the other, if there was a cable in the box it would still be $50 - Sony just would only make $24 on each one sold not $25. - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Kind of annoying omission, sure, when you know where to look for such cables its easy to find them for 1$ a piece, so no big deal, but plenty of people will probably end up spending more around like 10$.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"The answer to the second question is yes"
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/the-sixaxis-doesnt-time-out-214649.php
Not according to Gizmodo. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21xbox 360 controllers come with the option to throw in a set of AAs, or to get the rechargable battery that comes with a charging cord. last i heard, the Sixaxis doesn't give you this option of disposable or rechargable batteries
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Sources? Do we have any?
Right now, this just looks like a blog post, therefore its credibility is null and void - crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17I'd rather buy my own. I can get them way cheaper than Sony would charge for them.
If they did include it, it would up the price, and you know people would just bitch about that.
Didn't you guys have enough of the combo deals with Best Buy? - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Best buy needs a chance to push their 40 dollar gold plated usb cables to unwary people. HP does the same thing with their printers. Its just the way things work.
- growlzor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I honestly think Sony wants to fail as a company, or Bill Gates secretly bought Sony and decided it would be a fun game to see how long it would take to destroy a company and its image. So he made Sony make every stupid decision a company could possibly make, and hired a retard downy to make commercials for the PS3.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"I guess I should go out and buy a 20 dollar recharge cable for my xbox 360 wireless controller.... "
Not a 360 fan (don't have one and won't till they are sub $200), but if I'm not mistaken the 360 "recharger cable" is actually a battery pack and cable. The wireless controller uses AA batteries, so you just put in whatever you have available, whether it be alkalines or standard rechargeables. If you do buy the MS provided rechargeable solution they provide a way to charge it.
Sony, on the other hand is requiring that you only power the controller with it's internal battery and they aren't giving you a way to "refuel" it out of the box. It's not the same product bundling. - cplkai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Is greater than zero?
- jmacdonagh, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14How much do you think it would cost Sony to include that cable with each controller? Seems pretty stupid to not include it. At least with the 360 you can choose between regular battery power and a charge kit.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Do Xbox 360 wireless controllers come with the USB cable?
- MSTK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7...only, when we buy USB cables, Sony isn't getting any money. They're generic.
- Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11hmmmmm I smell money for sony and retail.
I have a bunch of those cables acquired over years from various devices.
however, Im willing to bet the average joe either
A. does not have one
B. Has one but is currently using one for a specific device
C. Does not realize that the cable is the same and will be sold one by retail agents for 20 dollars, and they will be right next to the controllers and be sony branded. (remember only use genuine parts or your console will explode.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Lol I have like fifty of those USB cables anyway
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's not about how much it would COST Sony to include those cables - we can all agree it's minuscule. It's about how many suckers they can get to buy "PS3 Controller Charging Cables" on the side for $10.00 or $20.00 or however much they'll overcharge for a freaking USB cable.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16Does the SIXAXIS come with rumble support? Does it turn itself off after not being used for X amount of minutes?
The answer to both questions is 'no'. - RiemannLebesgue, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Darryl, I had been wondering where you were. I guess after you got banned from Joystiq for trolling you decided you had to spread your hate elsewhere.
- RobDeBob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Okay, I'm sorry, but looking at the other reviews on the site:
Gizmondo gets a 10/10, while the DS Lite gets an 8/10.
Original DS gets a 10/10 but the picture is a freaking PROTOTYPE model.
These observations are made from the portables front page alone.
This site is not worthy of our traffic. No digg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@darryl242
Surmise this logically - you and your homie are playing madden 2012 all night and drain your controllers. You go and get some food at Buffalo Wild Wings to let the controller charge _but_ you only have one charger since sony decided to save .30c because they're cheap asshats. So one of you doesn't play until both controllers charge seperately which is double the time.
Just a theoretical situation but thought provoking none the less - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8A cable would cost sony less than a dollar. We're all tech geeks here for the most part, the outrage comes to the consumer who doesn't know where to buy a $1 cable / picks up a console at midnight and has to buy a "special" sony cable for $10+
Let's think about our less technologically friends here and be outraged about that, assuming that it's true - Ghost_MH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This isn't a USB cable for data transfers though...This is a cable to power/recharge the unit. How many electric devices do you know come with Li-Ion batteries, but no cable to power it back up when the battery dies???
- pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm wary of the knee-jerk fanboyism and/or Sony bashing as well. But this is how I look at it-- This product is going to be sold without the cable it needs to work properly. Despite being $50 in the first place. It would cost Sony much less than $1 to supply a cable with each controller.
Why should they?
a) battery life is around 30 hours. which will fly by for an average gamer.
b) they've provided functionality for SEVEN controllers per console, yet expect you to get by with only one charging cable regardless of how many additional controllers you buy
c) as an earlier comment stated, the SIXAXIS does not shut off by itself. people will forget and probably need to charge more often.
the context to all of this is that you've bought a $500 console and multiple $50 controllers. Sony is obligated to go the extra mile (if thats what you can call a 50-cent cable) at this point. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14Wow, I just digged two consecutive stories where SONY buries itself.
Hatred and fanatism asside -- forget about the other big two for a second (they're far from perfect as well) -- when will SONY just stop insulting our intelligence ??? - g3r4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thinking about it, I have three of these already, but can only place where I got one of them (PSP). When the cords are apparently magically appearing in houses, the lack of one with the controller isn't an issue.
- jewdiknight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4the point isn't the cost of the cable. The point is that it is essential to the controler and should be packaged with it. If I buy for controlers I want to have 4 USB cables with sony printed on it. Its the princible of it.
- Rabid_Llama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just by the way, the cable necessary may cost $2 online, but the cheapest one at Best Buy is $25, or $29 for the 6' ones. This is more about Best Buy ripping people off than about Sony ripping people off, but I still think it's stupid that they can't include a damn cable. I understand there's one with the $600 system - how generous of them.
They did the same thing with the PSP, which has the same connector and didn't come with a cable at all. - Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4^ ya I give you that
still seems like such an easy sale though for some people. Oh well, most people on here are well informed enough to know better. - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But that's precisely the point - these cables are CHEAP, under a buck each wholesale. Why not just toss one in the box to, oh I don't know, make things easy and convenient for your customers who are shelling out $600 for your product? Besides, it's not like you can get a USB cable for $1 or even $3 at a store, these are at least $5-15 most retail outlets, and that's where the vast majority of controllers will be bought.
No matter how you spin this, it's a stupid move by Sony... either the cable is cheap and they are easy to find (so they should be putting them in the box with the controller) or they are pricey and it keeps the controller price down (which adds a hidden cost to the PS3 that makes it even more ludicrous than before). - DevilDunkard, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Really, I'm not loving too much that Sony has done with our beloved PlayStation, but that's pretty minor. I'm sure most people that post here have 20 USB cables within a few feet of where your sitting. There are many other things to blast Sony about right now.
- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3How often are you using two keyboards at the same time? If you really can't be bothered to open whatever drawer you keep your computer cords in and pull one of these out, get your friend to bring one of his. Everyone has one of these. Even if they've never owned something that's used one, they'll still find one if they look hard enough.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well the iPod includes a cable to plug it into a USB port for charging...
It's just logical after all that when you buy something that has a non-removable battery that needs to be charged includes all the necessary means to charge it.
I can't believe how people try to spin it any other way... If the cable only cost 1$, why not bundle it? - lokes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is a horrible attempt at keeping costs low. Sure it helps get the product to the customer but why does that matter when it leads to bad reviews and generally pisses off the consumer? Pissed off consumers talk about their experiencing much more than happy ones.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is Jack Tramiel the Sony CEO? It would explain a lot.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's pretty short sighted on Sony's part.
Then again they have always been about the nickel and diming. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2companies never seem to do what is in their customers best interest. they never seem to think like customers. they always mess up the simple things, while delivering us new services they claim to be "revolutionary" that no one gives a hit about. how can a console be revolutionary if it does not even come with the basic tool to use it.
- seneyr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Granted USB cables aren't that hard to find, you'd think Sony might just be a bit more willing than usual to throw some goodwill to their customers. Then again, it is Sony we're talking about.
I'm sure Best Buy and Monster are happy about this move. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The 360 charge kit is at least $16. A cable for the SIXAXIS is perhaps $3.
I'm torn over this news. In one way, I would think you would want it to come with a cable. In another way, if I have 4 controllers, I don't really want to have 4 cables hanging off my PS3 anyway. I'll just charge 2 at a time or whatever.
I guess it should come with it and I could discard it if I don't need it. - jewdiknight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3$600 console. $50 controler. It better come with extra USB cabels and make my breakfast.
