- MattBD, on 02/11/2009, -0/+12I think the copyright on computer games should expire after a much shorter period than they do. Say, about 15 years, possibly 20, or 25 tops. Realistically the only way companies can expect to still make money on games from 1994 now is through compilations (I love Sonic Mega Collection). After this time they should be made public domain.
After all, technology moves on and many of these games simply become unavailable, or the consoles become unavailable. There are loads of games out there that are simply unavailable through legal means, and if no one's making any money off of it then where's the harm, and maybe it would encourage publishers to make their older games available online through sites like GOG.

I could easily build a rig that could run it on high in Vista for around $800 ($600 if I took the extra time to find the best deals). I'm fairly certain when the average consumer buys a brand new computer, they expect to pay a lot more than $600. If that's beyond your budget, it's time to find a new job.

- leptonbill, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4They *have* come a long way since 89 but once you hit about 1989 on, you’re looking at the x86 platform as the dominant computing platform, and at the present time applications like vmware, qemu, virtualbox and even dosbox for that matter have a good deal of steam(see development) behind them. And aside from dosbox the majority of the drive behind this development is for the enterprise and as such more and more emulation\virtualization is becomming supported by off the shelf hardware (intel VT or amd-v).
So I don't see this being any more difficult than the MAME/MESS project and if anything it could be easier than both MAME and MESS , as their intent is not only to run but accuratly emulate the hardware. - inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3It works fine if you have dl a bios rom & have a decent computer. The problem is compatibility. It has too many bugs with too many games to make it an adequate replacement for the console itself, unlike other emulators that are currently available.
- JoeRW, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Interestingly I found a rather obscure pDosBox (by Wall) for ppc that allowed me to play all the kings quests, space quests, leisure suit larry etc on the pda. This was pretty cool because the emulator emulated high memory as well as soundblaster for the complete experience.
Inexplicably however the developer updated the emulator to make it better but actually ruined it, and the previous versions were no longer available.
Wonder if anyone knows where to get a pocket DosBox with himem and blaster support. Im not sure that ScummVM will do all the sierra titles... - bitterbug, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Impossible Mission!

- buckrogers1965, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2I have been using mame for emulating old arcade games for years now. And several different C64 emulators for playing some old great games from that platform. All on a little hand held GP2X.
Elite, mule, barbarian, cauldron II, so many great games on the C64 platform. The graphics weren't perfect like today's games, so they had to make up for that with game play.
The old Infocom games were great in that they were already running in an emulator, even back in the day, using Z-code, so it was strait forward for someone to write a z-code emulator that could play all these old game files and make it cross platform.
I would like to see a law about abandoned games, that 10 years after the original manufacture stops selling the game it becomes public domain.
Great to see someone moving this forward. I would love to someday be able to put in a disk "museum" of old computers and have detailed images, descriptions and great emulators for nearly every old platform. - sei0n, on 02/11/2009, -1/+3I study at this University!
