Not to nit-pick, but there's only one add-on that they charged for (Burning Crusade). I usually don't consider one as countless. - bblnrlz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+311. World of Warcraft, released 2004 - 8.5 million subscribers.
2. Habbo Hotel, released 2000 - 7.5 million active users.
3. RuneScape, released 2001 - 5 million active users.
4. Club Penguin, released 2006 - 4 million active users.
5. Webkinz, released 2005 - 3.8 million active users.
6. Gaia Online, released 2003 - 2 million active users.
7. Guild Wars, released 2005 - 2 million active users.
8. Puzzle Pirates, released 2003 - 1.5 million active users.
9. Lineage I/II, released 1998 - 1 million subscribers.
10. Second Life, released 2003 - 500,000 active users. - Pewpewpew, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27Almost half of those "MMOs" are social networking sites.
Social networking site != MMO - hokeywebb22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27Wow how have I only heard of half of the these.
World of Warcraft, Runescape, Lineage, Guild Wars, and Second Life. Are the others not popular in the United States or have I been under a rock. It seems like a game that's has 7 1/2 million people would have some more talk about it. - Shad0wSP, on 10/11/2007, -9/+32WoW - 8.5 million * avg $14 = net $119 million per month.
not to mention the $50 actually buying the game.
wow. - danjohadley, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20I miss star wars galaxies *sniff*
- dstew74, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17I cancelled my WoW account yesterday, so it's really 8.499999 x 10^6 subscribers.
- rosefu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18I've heard of most of these. I don't think these web games should be counted as MMOs, though.
Here's a more relevant chart for those that play MMOs which are stand-alone games, not web games.
http://www.mmogdata.com/?q=node/12
Though the chart is rather depressing, because of how much time/money I've wasted on a lot of those games. - Bob042, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Wow, looking at this list, I really feel sad for the future of MMOs.
- StrangeFamous, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I had no idea Habbo Hotel was so popular. It's a purely social thing, no real gameplay to speak of.
- LaSepultura, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I played a Jedi back when you had to unlock a slot to make one. That was probably the most fun I have ever had in a MMO. I used to always get hunted by a Bounty Hunter/Combat Medic who was able to kill me every time. I remember the day I was finally powerful enough to kill her. It was great.
- Daedalus81, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I have issue with these numbers. Some of them are subscribers and some of them are possibly active user counts which is totally different. I remember reading an article on Digg where Second Life's actual active user base was something like 120,000 or less. A lot of these free games can have a ***** of people sign up that never use it again, which inflates their numbers.
- decadre, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13You can't do 8.5 million x $15 a month, since around half if not more of those subs are from the Asia Market. In Asia, the games might or might not have monthly subs as we do here AND they have a "a pay as you play" type of gamecard system where subscribers by hours. That brings up a problem counting actual subs in some regards, because someone who logs in for 5 minutes is counted as a subscriber for the month. Part of the reason why at one point Lineage II (I think that's the game) I believe was claiming some 14 million subs.
- padfoot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I also cancelled mine last week... so make that 8.4999998 x 10^6
- totallyAMAZING, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Habbo Hotel? Not a game at all, it's chat rooms with avatars. This is a stupid list.
EVE was the only good MMO left, and the developers are just ruining it because they can cheat. Great idea CCP, way to give devs special privieleges in-game you idiots. Now all that's left is "kill 10 boars, kill 10 super boars, kill 10 super mega boars, collect stuff, kill 10 more boars..." - cmize, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Yes. SOE is now known as the place MMORPGs go to die.
- iamnos, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I'm a huge fan of Guild Wars, probably because there's no ongoing fees to pay.
- j4son, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I do too.
That game used to be soooo much fun until SOE raped all the fun out of it.....twice. - JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Would have thought FFXI could make the cut.
- cmize, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7SWG was my first MMORPG. It's too bad SOE killed it.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9You're being sarcastic, right ? It's hard to tell on the interwebs.
- lithera, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The same applies for a large extend to Second Life aswel.
No gameplay, no ingame goals. All achievements (if any) that are made is via buying items (clothes, land, houses) with cold hard real dollars.
Other than that it's just a big glorified irc chatchannel running on the worst 3D engine ever. - iamnos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@bakatrinh
That's a bit of an exaggeration. There are currently 2 expansion, Factions and Nightfall, with a third coming later this year. Its still cheaper to keep up with Guild Wars then to pay $10-$15/month for some of the other MMORPGs. You don't need the expansions either. There are still plenty of people in the main area of the game, and you can even interact with characters created in the expansions. - danakin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6So basically, the actual list should look like:
1. World of Warcraft, released 2004 - 8.5 million subscribers.
2. RuneScape, released 2001 - 5 million active users.
3. Guild Wars, released 2005 - 2 million active users.
4. Lineage I/II, released 1998 - 1 million subscribers.
5. Second Life, released 2003 - 500,000 active users. - NycterisA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Exactly! I was sure Maple Story would be on there somewhere.
- ngandy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7i had the "privilege" of working on Shadowbane...where we spent countless hours playing Lineage II.
yeah...so it's no wonder why SB didn't make the list. - Toast1185, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5"I usually don't consider one as countless."
depends on how well you can count i suppose.
and btw, I agree with Daedalus. Second Life is over hyped - strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The site is running fine. No need.
- agoodm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5What about eve online?
- danjohadley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4good to see some people remember it before SOE destroyed it.
- lordtyros, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"A Massively Multiplayer Online Game (also called MMOG or MMO) is a computer game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously."
I think Guild Wars qualifies. - twylight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4What a crock, only paying ones should be on a list like this.
Webkinz is impressive, $30 for a crappy stuffed animal and a code. Very nice business model. Kids want alot of the little things too. - DoodleMaster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6How is lotro:SA doing?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4WOW..I'm amazed that runescape made it...BUT hey, it's free to registered an account in Runescape...i got like 5 ,and i think they still active =D..This list is not accurate, you should go by "Current registered & active accounts" , not by how many accounts there are registered in the game's database...(much of Runescape's "active" accounts are abandoned, and some were sold on Ebay *roll-eyes*) Anyway, BS..Im disappointed not to see Lord of the Rings Online, it such a great game (well, beta)
- AyoRayRay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4MapleStory has to be some where up there, even the Google Ads on top of this page think so too.
maplestory.nexon.net - LxRogue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I really doubt that will be anytime soon. Blizzard will be working on SC2 for probably a couple more years, and after that it could be Diablo 3.
Guild Wars sounds pretty cool with that whole 1 time payment. Runescape was fun for a while but after a certain point you realize how crappy it is, especially compared to other games. - trunkster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Bleh I play Final Fantasy XI. Not being on the list explains why there aren't a bunch of idiots talking about cybering all the time. And there are plenty of people on to enjoy the game, and most of them are mature adults and not immature teens running around.
- ModOps, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Worst 3D engine ever? No, that can't... ok yeah, you're right. It's the worst piece of dreck I've ever had the misfortune to install on my machine. I tried it when it was in Beta and I hated it. I gave it another shot a few months ago, and NOTHING HAD CHANGED.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Inaccurate. Some show "active users" some show "subscribers"
Not the same thing. - drc500free, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Puzzle Pirates is worth a good look. Just keep out of the inns and try to find some mature players out on the sea instead.
- TomFrost, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You gotta wonder how gaming companies opt-in to be included in this, as well. There are games on that list I've never heard of -- who wants to bet there are other games out there that the author has never heard of? Dofus, for example -- popularized by mac users, runs on PC and Linux as well. It comes from a small French company, with fairly new English international servers. Its player base blows things like Second Life out of the water, but it's not hyped -- so if the author was never introduced to it, how would he ever find out?
No way is this de facto. - everfalling, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4POOL'S CLOSED
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3Nice to know they forgot Lord of the Rings: Online which has more users currently than Habbo Hotel.
- Zephir62, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, kind of funny since the makers of Maplestory have publically announced that they have over 3 million active users along with 50 million registered accounts.. oh well.
- boredsam, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I'm surprised there isn't one SOE title on there. Are they hurting that bad?
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I've been clean for 6 months, never looked back. That damn game took over my life.
- NycterisA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I was SURE Maple Story would be on that list somewhere... huh.
- Godlike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3SOE has sucked since they botched SWG. The corporate culture and their attitude towards customer service and quality (which regardless of what they say, or what numbers they fudge) are both seriously lacking.
I will never, ever play another SOE game. I was slightly interested in Vanguard, but not as long as SOE has their dick in that pie will I ever buy that game. - Alyy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Lord of the Rings Online +1
- LxRogue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You can't count all those 9 million accounts, they say right there that only 5 million are active which means people havent logged on in months. Even of the 5 million, you probably only have 3-4 million individual players.
Everyone who plays wow pays $15 a month, RS only has a million paying members -
