- MatttK, on 10/18/2007, -0/+35I can't even play FPS games anymore, thanks to Half-Life 2. The world doesn't feel interactive if I can't push over a desk and knock everything off of it. I don't care how high res the textures are or how many polygons are in a character's face. If I can't get onto a roof by taking all the furniture out of a house and creating stairs, I'm not interested.
- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Half Life 2 was the first game that Wowed me with physics. Though I did have a lot of fun in Halo 2 wedging the tank in the Zanzibar fan and watching it fly. Can't wait to see what future games will offer.
- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23What in the hell does this article have to do with Nintendo? There you go again; instigating yet another argument.
- destructoid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Ah, Bionic Commando. Good times, good times
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16This article is pretty retarded. He discounts the legitimacy of the physics of almost every game he mentions. It's like, "Top Ten FPSs" and starting out with The Sims. "Well this one isn't really an FPS, but damn was it fun to control the lives of your characters!"
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15No digg: There are quite a few games that should have made the list, and a few (like halo) that should not have.
I definatly would have incuded the UT series (walljumps, pludgers, flack/razorjack, vehicles, etc)
Super Mario 64
possibly Tribes
Waverace
Marble Madness
And don't forget about all the amazing racing and flying games out there. - swanny89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Gravity Gun FTW!!
- angrycat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16What the hell does portal have to do with physics? Portals are a gimmick not physics. Virtua Fighter is a bunch of preset animations not physics.
They should have put at least 1 racing game there, those games are masterpieces in physics simulation.
Dug down because the author is a mouthbreathing retard. - cjdunn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19No Digg. #1 is an unreleased game. (Which will _probably_ rock, but only some time early next year).
- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Well, everyone was excited when the Wii was rumored to have a PhysX physics coprocessor. I guess that's a connection.
But I agree that it's offtopic to bring Nintendo into a discussion about video game physics. The two have little relation to each other. - spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Garry's mod is a great way to experiment with Source (half life 2) physics.
http://garry.tv/ - Jadix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Is it just me or did this entire story seem to be a portal plug? The number 1 physics game of all time isn't out yet? BS.
- GalacticCmdr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Okay, so none of those games had anything at all to do with physics in a game. It was more like "10 games I want to mention to get a Digg". Halo? Physics? How many military vehicles can you launch 30+ feet in to the air with just a few grenades or a rocket? All without blowing the vehicle into so many pieces that there is nothing but bits of scrap.
Physics was the last thing you should mention when talking about those games. - argonsloth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10No digg. Missing: The Incredible Machine
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Oni's hype was swallowed up by the fact that it wasn't that good of a game, despite having admittedly one of the coolest production designs and artwork of any game. It simply wasn't a good game, and that's that.
The whole game was basically about running around factory after factory filled with clueless workers, barren rooms, and boxes, boxes, and more boxes.
Penny Arcade covered it pretty well in this classic strip:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2000/12/20 - WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+92 words: MARBLE MADNESS.
- MontyZooma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8No Solar Jetman?
- Kaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Half-Life 2 should've been #1.
- CtrlAltDel85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They forgot to mention Plasma Pong! Only game I know of that uses fluid dynamics to produce some crazy effects. The new version 1.3 was just released and it's a huge improvement.
http://www.plasmapong.com - illicium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What, no Worms!?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6NO ARMADILLO RUN?! BLASPHEMY!
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You mean Scorched Earth? :-P
- GNiMeLF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i loved Blood's physics back in the day.. Kickin heads as soccer Balls!. now that was fun :)
- MehYam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Descent's flying model made it the most fun and engaging FPS I've ever played, esp. in multiplayer. I'd like to see that franchise resurrected - unfortunately, I don't think there'd be a market for it.
- slatez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6what about something from the "descent" series? those games (especially descent II) had some great physics in them
- falstaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yup. As soon as I saw the article title, I thought there's no way the original Carmageddon *doesn't* make the list. More than 10 years old, and it still puts all the Need for Speed games to shame.
- therayven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A list of games ranked by physics simply for their "fun" factor that does not include Psi-Ops is severely lacking. Neglecting Scorched Earth or Worms is also a damn shame.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What would you classify as a true "physics" game then? Most games today are, by their nature, a simulation of the physical world. The more physical properties you can include( friction, gravity, mass, magnetism, fluid dynamics), the more realistic the game world becomes.
- Smwbigboss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Because you know it takes a cell processor to play pong...
- babylonian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah, I pretty much can't understand what people see in utterly uninformed articles like this. As disappointing as the absence of Armadillo Run is, it's also somewhat understandable, as it's not that popular a game. Sure is fun, though.
No, the real problems are ones like the exclusion of Psi-Ops, arguably the greatest physics game of this generation. It's so impressive and well-implemented that when Havok presents their engine to a client, they show them Psi-Ops to illustrate it.
I mean, this guy seems completely oblivious to the fact that Half-Life 2 runs on the Havok physics engine.
●"Whether Prey stole its portal system from Portal's predecessor, Narbacular Drop, I don't know."
They started development on Prey in 1995, and showed off the portal system at E3 '97. Narbacular Drop came out LAST YEAR. To say the portals in Prey feel "tacked on" is one of the dumbest criticisms I've heard of it in a while. I mean, here's a Prey trailer from 1998 that shows off the portals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z25KY8b5u1g
●"Halo implemented the now ubiquitous Havok physics engine."
Not true. Halo 2 was the one that used Havok. As a matter of fact, Bungie wrote an entire front page article about the move to the Havok engine, and getting the Warthog to feel just right in Halo 2.
I understand the appeal of a top ten list, but when it's written this half-assedly and ends with a game that's yet to be released, it's just silly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No Trespasser, No Bridge Construction Set, and No Armadillo Run makes a No digg.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I could play for hours just messing around with the physics in the original Halo. There was just something "off" a bit with Halo 2. No longer could you launch a full Warthog of the opposing team 300 feet into the air with strategically placed grenades and a single rocket. Now (in Halo 2) everything is either auto aim or blows up before anything really fun happens.
- danc4498, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't know about a plug for portal, but it is a little odd that the number 1 physics is based on a video.
- commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I second the UT series. With UT2003 they implemented the Karma engine, which was the first time I ever got a chance to really witness and experiment with ragdoll physics in a released game.
There were times (still are, actually) when I'd get fragged and want to watch my corpse bounce around the map for a few seconds before respawning. Good stuff.
I like the list but also agree with cjdunn in that having #1 be an unreleased game is kinda lame. - kazem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Marathon, the FPS on the Mac back in the mid-90's had innovative use of Physics. The grenade hop happened there, before it happened in Quake. It really pushed the envelope of 2.5D technology in the physics realm. Duke Nukem 3D probably did the most with the 2.5D technology, but its physics wasn't as impressive.
Oh yeah, speaking of Bungie games, Oni had really good physics. It was a kung-fu anime game, so you had character-character interaction, which was really good in terms of physics and fun gameplay. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, Carmageddon. That's a game I haven't heard of for a LONG time! Carmageddon 2 still ranks as my favourite PC game of all time. Carmageddon 3 onwards kinda lost it, but I spent hours upon hours playing 2. I'm tempted to dig it out and play it.
- technique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll agree with the #1 physics game of all time isn't out yet. It never will be -- there's always a better one just around the corner. (insert duke nukem forever, phantom, vista, etc references here)
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The physics are the worst problem with that game. Things often bounce the opposite direction they should, and the wind effect on items seems pretty hit/miss.
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I completely forgot about Bridge Construction Set.
Oh the number of hours I spent on that to make impossible bridges that broke physics, yet still didn't break or fail the test. - slatez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oh man, that'd be awesome to see it resurrected. it's surprising no company has taken on an fps game of that type...there's probably a bigger market for it than ppl think. especially after the success of oblivion...an fps in an "rpg"
- lament, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Portal (and TF2) comes free with Half-Life 2: Episode 2, due before the end of the year.
- therayven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@MasteRR: Aha! Another SE fan. :D I have the original (I think) DOS game somewhere on one of those old late-90's game compilation CDs.
- protocoI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That game that had the physics that entertained me the most was Burnout 3's crash mode... Everything interacted in a really cool way, both visually and physics wise... Seeing all the damage caused by one catalyst, and how much it could change by a one degree shift in alignment was really awesome.
- Kev585, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a gamer, I am pleased by the direction "physics" have taken in games.
- XistenZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish Red Faction's Engine with the geomod took off better than it did. That game was excellent untill it was riddled with modders.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@bobotheking
You shouldn't make an asinine comment like that unless you know what you're talking about. While not perfect, game physics are getting better are more complex everyday. There are some pretty amazing examples out there considering how difficult these things are to model into a game. To say this saddens you is strange, I would think you should have an even greater appreciation than the average joe. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What!? No mention of Carmageddon? Pah!
- postapoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember when that came out. Very revolutionary game physics
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BridgeBuilder is the new wave of bridge games, you should check it out.
http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/ - aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What about ZWOK? That has grrrreat physics.
Shoot a ball in the air.... it falls by result of gravity. -
