- sterntastic223, on 11/16/2007, -1/+19on what grounds? SoR2 is more fun to play with two people, at the very least
- Birdoftruth, on 11/16/2007, -0/+17SOR II is the best Genesis game period.
- Hojohto, on 11/16/2007, -1/+15If Turtles in Time hadn't been on the list, someone would have died.
- Phocion55, on 11/16/2007, -0/+14Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?
- Tserk, on 11/16/2007, -2/+15River City Ransom needs to be higher and Viewtiful Joe needs to be on the list, if it was a top 10 list.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -0/+11How did River City Ransom not make number 1? It was one of the very first, and it was so in depth. It had a story (although it sucked and was fairly ridiculous), characters were upgradeable, you could even outfit your character with different clothing.
- goldfenix, on 11/16/2007, -0/+10***** the speedbike level. It was designed by Lucifer with the sole intention of breaking my fragile young mind. To this day, that level is the single greatest proof of Satan that has ever existed. FACT.
- mattcoady, on 11/16/2007, -0/+10I hear he's been kidnapped by ninjas.
- mattcoady, on 11/16/2007, -0/+10Its essentially the same as turtles in time, but time did it better.
- mattyice11, on 11/16/2007, -0/+10or X-Men arcade.
- blapierre, on 11/16/2007, -0/+9Clearly the author has never played The Simpsons arcade game.
- charlieboyx, on 11/16/2007, -1/+9XBL has streets of rage 2 .I just downloaded it.Brings back allot of memories of Sega.
- LordSeth, on 11/16/2007, -0/+8I agree those games were great fun.
- tuxidomasx, on 11/16/2007, -0/+8Let's go for a burger!
- Asianwaste, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7Battletoads and Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team Up!
- Speaking, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7No Battle Toads, Simpsons or X-MEN 6 person arcade!?!? Double Viking is lame.
- masterthiefster, on 11/16/2007, -1/+8Contra isn't a beat 'em up you poser.
- mizzrym, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7sunset riders ftw. One day I will buy that standup arcade machine.
- Phocion55, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7AWESOME game. But impossible...............
I remember not even being able to beat it as a kid with Game Genie. - Triachus, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7I'm so glad Turtles in Time got mentioned. The game gestapo usually overlooks this one.
- Asianwaste, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7Dungeons and Dragons Tower of Doom and Shadows Over Mystra. I'm not sure if they are top 3 but certainly would make it up on the top 10 somewhere. Also they forgot Alien Vs Predator.
- Asianwaste, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7I'm BAD!
- Gir53457, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6Viewtiful Joe was more along the lines as a platformer than a beat em' up.
- smackafiyah, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6Dug x infinity for River City Ransom, just wish it were ranked a little higher though
- PhantomBantam, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6I was about to say the same, until I realized none of the games on the list have guns. Game genre names are so confusing, someone needs to develop a taxonomy. side scrollers = vScrollerus beatus
- Hetman, on 11/16/2007, -1/+7River city ransom should be one. It is a perfect nes game. It is probably one of the top 5 nes games of all time.
- LeeSoong, on 11/16/2007, -1/+7Golden Axe. Way to get me started!
The Author obviously did not know how to play Gilius Thunderhead (the dwarf).
His specialty was getting in the middle of the screen and doing the power move of reverse rolling on the ground. The Dwarf could clear the screen of the largest opponents simply by rolling on the ground, again and again.
If he got 'out of sync' of the rolling position, the dwarf had the fastest magic 'recharge' - grab 1 bottle of potion and 'POW' the whole screen of opponents. Time it right when the little blue thieves were on screen - and not only could you POW your opponents - you got an automatic recharge from additional dropped potion bottles.
Just a few bottles and you had reached maximum magic potential. Lastly the flying dwarf chop sliced and diced any remaining opponents - no problem. The Axe wielding Dwarf is the main star of Golden Axe.
And if they don't get out of the way the first time, give'em the Horns with a the running ramming charge.
Tyris Flare (amazon woman) had a wicked fast attack, in all forms. She didn't pack much punch - needing more hits to disable opponents, time consuming but still nimble. It took forever to 'charge up' her maximum magic, Dragon Attack - BLAST! very rewarding graphics effects, with devastating force. Deadly fast flying kick too.
Ax Battler (male barbarian swordsman) - his double tap running jump sword through the opponent's head was a 1 hit kill. His reverse sword spin also often was a 1 hit kill. The envy of Chuck Norris Flying Man Kick was not as fast as Tyris Flare but knocked'em down. Balanced magic - not as quick to charge up as the dwarf, not as powerful as the mighty amazon Dragon attack, but power enough to get out of a tight spot.
So Golden Axe played like this:
1. Dwarf - sneaky, dirty fighter with quick magic attacks. Throwin' the horns into any body in his way.
2. Woman - fast repeated attacks. deadly long kicking legs and massive killer magic.
3. Man - strength and power attacks. Slower to hit, but they just don't get back up.
A modern magic man barbarian. Long reach with the sharpened blade.

Happy Axing! - mythicflux, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6When I open the page I told myself I could only take the list seriously if SORII was on it. They did not disappoint.
- BabyWookie, on 11/16/2007, -1/+7It's definitelly right up there with Sonic 2, Gunstar Heroes, Shinobi 3, Phantasy Star 4 and Shining Force 2 .
- ceredron, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6Turtles in Time is 100% win, man. I could beat that game on hard in 23 minutes, baby! With a friend, a mere 21 minutes. Jesus... unrivaled for EVER.
- rubixsphere, on 11/16/2007, -1/+7Battletoads and Simpsons are notably missing
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5i used to cheese the bosses with the headbutt, man those skeletons were real sobs
- dooms13, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5Not inaccurate, Contra is not a "beat 'em up" But it is one of the best if not the best side scrolling shooters ever.
- Asianwaste, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6Fanboyishness blinds reasoning. Wrong genre no matter what mode they put it in. I would never put Tekken on the same category even with the Tekken Force minigames.
- raiderj, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5That game ***** rocks!
- Matri, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6Oh-kay, you know way much more about that game than anyone should be comfortable with...
- skyshock1, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5I'd argue Earthworm Jim or Sonic 2, but I digress...
- adventflux, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5Anyone remember Battle Toads & Double Dragon?
- t4k3n, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6I Disagree , Although it is a very good game. I believe Donkey Kong is better.
- ephrils1, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4I'm a huge fan of River City Ransom. I listed myself on my Best Nintendo Games Ever site. That game was awesome, innovative, and downright fun.
- masterthiefster, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4It appears to be from the XBLA port, which includes a "hires" mode that gives the graphics a smoothed appearance (not unlike emulator filters such as Super2xSaI and AdvanceMAME2x).
- mattcoady, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5DD was fine for its time, but it passed the torch when streets came out.
- ephrils1, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4There seems to be a misinterpretation of "Beat 'Em Ups" here. Ninja Gaiden is not listed because it doesn't fit. I think the article writer was looking for something like one man against the world hand-to-hand kind of thing. This is why Contra isn't there either. Weapons can be picked up, but not started with(with the exception of Golden Axe).
I think Kung Fu was left off because it didn't really accomplish anything new. Though, technically, at the time it was new. - jaynemother, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4I think Golden Axe was deeper than SoR2 but SoR2 was more fen.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4The original Kung-Fu is missing!!!
- skyshock1, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4Dude. Viewtiful Joe?
- kidcodea, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3double dragon 2 and golden axe FTW!
