- FalseProphecy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+71I like stuff like this, but it's aggravating when it's on multiple pages.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36you think that maybe because you submitted it *****?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38I find it offensive that Dr. Robotnik from Sonic the Hedgehog was not included.
- dagnabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33What a surprise, it's submitted by you. Thanks for the link though, I buried your story.
- hackmiester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27As if your comment wasn't useless enough before, the spam made it worse. When will people get that no one is gonna click it? When will they understand no one cares?
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I'm sorry, but something from Shadow of the Colossus should be up there.
Sure it's not a classic game or anything, but every single fight in that game was one of the best I've ever had - especially the one where you had to grapple onto the back of a giant beast flying over a lake as he tried all sorts of means to get you off. That is one of the coolest boss fights ever. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Bowser
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20(additional bitchy comment on how some other boss should have been on the list and how s/he was better than all the rest)
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Sonic 2, You are in a huge sky fortress, You have Zero rings, one hit and death, There are no save points in sonic.
You fight one of the best enemies in the game, A robot clone of you with more moves than any other boss in the game, who is incredibly tricky to beat flawlessly, Then you move on, chase dr robotnik, and he jumps into a giant robotnik suit, taller than the entire screen, and it fires missiles. Again, one hit, and death.
That was drama. - Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Wasn't something like this on Digg already? Someone bitching about a dupe?
Woopdidoo. - Easty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I agree with this post and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16"...what the hell is that? I've been playing games all my life and I never heard of that. There's no way that can even remotely be in the top 10."
I grew up with that game (although i was still very young at the time) but it was still there. Believe it or not, there were some games that existed before you did. - isilex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I was hoping to see Street-Fighter! -- Remember all the coins spent just to get to M. Bison and then loose! :-P
- dargon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13But did you own an apple ][?
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Any kind of top 10 list anyone makes relating to anything is always off the mark. Bowser REALLY should be on there, no matter where you stand. I would argue Sephiroth, but I'd be buried by the "FFVII WAS OVERRATED!!1" crowd.
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This list gets points in my book for providing a list that was insightful and informative rather than obvious and predictable.
Sure, anyone could throw together a list with Bowser...Ganon...Robotnik...Wily...Sephiroth...Kefka...
i.e., just pick the bosses from the most popular franchises of the last two decades and call it a "best of" boss list when it's really just a "best of" *franchise* list which happens to only discuss the bosses from the games in question. Which seems to be what most people here are complaining it wasn't.
I'm glad it wasn't that. Instead, it looked at the bosses themselves. Well chosen, overall. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Machine Gun Willy... nope.
I could easily pick a million more popular boss fights than what they chose here.
What about Ruby Weapon in Final Fantasy 7?
Mother Brain in any of the Metroids? Hell, the Metroid Prime itself in the first one was a CRAZY difficult fight.
I don't get how these lists are created sometimes. - lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11padding: 0px;
I hate that part more than the multiple pages. - darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Sephiroth is one of the best boss fights I've had so far - good music, fight specific graphics (nothing beats seeing Meteor getting summon to knock you around), and then the satisfaction of finely beating him. Most of the other games I have beaten had fairly generic boss fights - the only difference between them and the regular monsters were more hit points and different music.
- jblade, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Mike Tyson - Yes
Ganon - Yes
The rest just sucked. - g0rdy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@ FalseProphecy,
You know why they do that?
Boosts ad views .. - thtroyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah. Shadow of Colossus has one of the most epic feels of any game I've played, simply from the gameplay. Sure, there isn't much of a story, but some of those colossi are awesome.
I haven't beaten the game yet, but the 5th one that you mentioned is definitely the most awesome and memorable so far. - rugger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The thing people don't seem to understand is that these are OPINION pieces. They aren't meant to be definitive, just what this one guy thinks. I just like to read these things and reminisce and try to ignore the people who get offended by one guy's opinion that machine gun willy was a good boss fight.
- ashwin100, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Sephiorth was the first name that came into my head too.
- ZackScott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I suppose the term "boss" and "boss fight" are different things, but I think Resident Evil 4 had some of the best "boss fights."
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9> I've been playing games all my life and I never heard of that.
Toying around with your NES doesn't classify as "playing games all my life".
I have never owned an Apple II, but I know that Karateka was created by the same guy (Jordan Mechner) who later on did Prince of Persia, which featured the same fluid movements like that old game.
You fail miserably at being a gamerlamer.
To be on-topic again:
I miss the bosses from the Sega Mega Drive game "Gynoug". - florin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The T-Rex in one of the early Tomb Raider games scared the hell out of me. I was merrily goofin' around when out it came and knocked me (I mean Lara) dead. That was totally unexpected. Yet pretty cool.
- GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I played HOURS of Akuma in school on an old donated Apple ][ in 1995.
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Buried it as well.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8No Bowser? :( And though maybe not good enough for the top 10, I always enjoyed Dr. Robotnik.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8another one to go with bowser is Donkey Kong. Were there even video game bosses before DK?
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Karateka is the greatest Karate game of all time.
Next you'll say you've never played the Apple II Conan game. - uppedbyhiggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I submitted the Ninja Gaiden NES bosses as the most intense boss fights I've ever witnessed. You kill your father and you're like "yes, I beat this game it's so hard!". Then this other thing comes out and you have to beat him. After (inevitably) dying, and starting all the way from the previous level, you get to that second boss and kill him.
Rejoice? Not yet. There is still ANOTHER final boss to kill. I love and hate this game... - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6SOTC seemed to have no story, but conveyed a deep and passionate story throught the whole game.
- kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, you do realize this is from September 22, 2003, don't you? Not exactly breaking news or anything.
- Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've never beat Machine Gun Willy.. i put the controller down.. my little brother grabs it.. and what do you know.. he beats him.. somehow... after that..I bought him Whataburger.. :)
- scottie924, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm surprised that no one said anything about the boss in Bubble Bobble. He was hard as hell. We spent 3 hours trying to beat it, then he got mad and moved fast and you had to hit him another 60 times.
Maybe he just seemed harder because I drank each time I died. But he was still hard. - namtellum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4+1 for Sephiroth. Hell, even emerald or ruby weapon.
- RilDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4mike tyson was impossible to beat, i knocked him down one time and then i think i passed out from exhaustion.
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good point. A question of whether the boss is personified, I'd say. Another such case: Contra. Great boss fights, but are they great bosses? Sure, great fun fighting that first...alien...thing, and then that final...alien...thing...but I don't know that I'd call them "great bosses".
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You've never heard of that game?! Guess you missed out then. That game was my addiction back in the day. That and "Load Runner" on the Apple IIe, honorable mention, Oregon Trail. haha
And while I'm thinking about it, when B&W Mac Classic came out, I lost 3 years of my life playing "Dark Castle." - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You mean I have to fight a boss? Thanks - you just spoiled the game for me.
Joking aside, you didn't really spoil much :D - Kytin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The last boss in Turok for N64 was a bitch for at least
- EricAnderton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Exactly. Modern games practically hand you a glass of warm milk, put your pajamas on and sing you a lullaby by comparison.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7pics or it didn't happen?
- bigwinnerx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This article would be fantastic with YouTube links...
And Karateka was the dog's bollocks back on the Apple II. Slow-ass fight scenes. Oh, it was great... - MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...no Sepiroth?!?
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Any single foe from Shadow Of The Colossus whips ass on any boss previous. Perhaps the list should have been about "Memorable Bosses".
- rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think the Ganon fight from Wind Waker was much more impressive than the Ocarina one. That finishing blow had me awe-struck. Made me feel like a kid again.
- RaysinX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How is Hitler from Wolf 3d not on there?
Hitler is basically the definition of a boss battle, especially when he has 4 machine guns.... -
