- Talus, on 10/12/2007, -15/+207Great...I finally decide to buy a 360 and now THIS happens.
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -9/+145Giving the consumer what they want is not screwing people over. Ever bought an iPod? Apple improves on their designs yearly. It's the nature of progressive technology.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+96How are fans being screwed over? If your Xbox 360 works without any problems, what difference would it make to you if there's a slightly updated version of it that's available? You're still playing the same games on a system that works fine for you.
If your Xbox 360 broke, well then, you aren't exactly playing anything, are you. Since Microsoft extended their warranty, they will either fix or replace your console FOR FREE, so either way, you're getting a console that WORKS. And if you're worried that your console will break in the future, then it's pretty much a given that Microsoft will replace it with the newest revision of the hardware they have (since they will discontinue production of current hardware when the new one is available). Sure, going through Microsoft technical support might be a hassle, but is it really worth crying over?
"Oh no, I might have to go to the post office! Wah! Not the post office!!!"
What is there to be upset over, exactly? That the new system comes with an HDMI port and your current one does not? The premium console already comes with cables for HD TVs, and I don't hear anyone complaining that the picture isn't good enough. Besides, you can always buy the $40 HD VGA adapter if you want even BETTER picture (or if you want to use a high-quality PC monitor or something). Granted, I don't own an HDTV, but I can't imagine that the improvement from regular HD or VGA cables to HDMI is anything more than a trivial, barely-noticeable thing. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+78Sony did do it... twice.
they upgraded both the PS1 and PS2. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -8/+80"But they never expanded the capabilities. Just gave them a smaller form factor."
Your PS2 came with an network adapter? Mine didn't. - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -6/+66How the hell is improving the hardware screwing anybody?
- LCISTech, on 10/12/2007, -4/+62I knew there was a reason for me to wait!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+55Why? Do you have it positioned on top of your TV, for all to marvel at its size? Because mine is laying on the floor, behind everything, completely invisible unless you start digging around with a flashlight. Certainly a better alternative than the GIANT PS3, with its internal power supply.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -10/+51If you bought a 360, then you did so knowing that it didn't have HDMI. It didn't bother you when you made the purchase, so why is it bothering you now?
Another observation -- 720p is the sweet spot for high graphical detail and smooth frame rates. Games rendered in 1080p won't look as nice -- they will benefit minimally from the higher resolution, at the cost of weaker environmental effects, shading, and so forth. An HDMI port isn't going to make the 360's GPU any more powerful (and for the record, it's already far superior to the PS3's). Therefore, you're really upset that you can't upscale 720p games like Gears of War to 1080p. You can, however, upscale them to 1080i. Guess what, there's no ***** visible difference!
This 1080p controversy is perhaps the most ridiculous in the history of home theater. It's acquired enormous mental real estate for a format which offers a negligible improvement. Nobody is unhappy with the 360's graphics, they're just unhappy because they think they're missing out on something. It's a dick measuring contest in which 360 owners are a quarter-inch shorter and an inch thicker. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44kevin45:
If you're REALLY upset over this, here's a solution: put the console, all cables, and all manuals that came with it back in it's original box. Take the box to your car. Drive to the store you bought the console from. Now proceed to the store's customer support desk, put the boxed console on the table, and politely ask for a refund.
Now come home and patiently wait for this new version of the hardware to come out, and use the money you just got back to buy it.
Problem solved, and without you losing any money. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44This might come as a shock to you, but while the Xbox 360 hard drive is proprietary, it is also external and easily removable. Therefore, if you want to get this larger-capacity drive, it's just a matter of pressing a small button to pop out your current drive and put in the new one.
Also, it seems evident from your post that you prefer the PS3. In case you weren't paying attention to the news, the failure rates of PS3 hardware far eclipse those of the Xbox 360. I personally saw it when the company I work for bought a PS3 for our break room. We unboxed it, hooked it up, carefully put in a disc and... the Blu Ray drive promptly spit it out while giving out a shrill beep. The system would not accept any discs at all, basically. And this isn't even the most common hardware failure of the PS3, a simple Google search will net you tons of results.
I just bought the Xbox 360 within the last few weeks, and I personally don't really care that this new version is coming out. Mine is working flawlessly so far. I'm sure the ones who've had trouble with theirs might be upset, but most people have no problem with the hardware as it is.
Heh, now watch as my console breaks on me right after I say this... :-P - truspector, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37Usually I would dig you down and move on, but you are retarted and I wanted to take this oppurtunity to inform you of why your points are invalid.
Now we see why MS hurried the release of the Xbox 1.5
Xbox 1.5, is that why the 360 has better looking exclusives, and all multiplatform titles on the 360 have either a. better graphics or b. better framerates. Please don't feed me this just wait crap, that saying is played out already.
Congrats to the 9+ million people who purchased the first release of the 360, your < 1 year console is now outdated.
How is it outdated. They are simply shrinking the die size on the processor and making a larger hdd. The system will run a little cooler and that is all. I only use my HDD for game saves, XBL, and an occassional demo. I don't need a larger HDD.
New owners will have a cooler system with a larger HDD.
So. Mine still works just as it is supposed to. - mojorojoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Smart move on microsoft. They double the PS3 hd capacity (which will greatly boost Microsofts video download service), add an HDMI, and do a die shrink. The have certainly learned quite a bit since their first black box. I wonder though what becomes of existing 360 premium's and cores..are they going to liquidate the prices to pump them out of the supply channels?
- esbi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33I hope that they will also redesign the power supply (A.K.A the brick)
- jager719, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27its not outdated, you assclown...current 360's preform just as well as the ps3, and games look amazing. these improvements are just that: slight improvements, that do not render the 'old' 360s useless. there just was an article on here somewhere that said that the 360 looked the same, if not often better, than the ps3, while offering better framerates
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I haven't seen mine since I bought it since it's behind and below and out of sight where it belongs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29I bet you complain like this every time you buy any electronics.
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24ZOMFG, like this one time, i bought a minidisc player, and a week later, they released a new one with the 4x playback. But did I scream and cry like a ***** baby? NO. I just got by with what I had. Sometimes being an early adopter sucks, but to be honest, id rather be down an HDMI port and a 120gb HDD, than miss out on all the good times in the first year I had my 360.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Man, if I can finally buy a second system, this will be awesome! Wii60!
- LanMan66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I suspect one of the biggest reasons for having an external power supply is to help control the heat buildup inside the console. Internal power supplies=more heat generated inside the console.
- tamurlane6, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19There have been rumors that an HDMI port was to be added in the next revision. If it's that damn important to you then you should have had the sense to wait a little longer and get the revised specs. Obviously you digg so you would have seen the rumors in the weeks before you purchased your console. In fact, I'm not sure why anyone is up in arms about MS revising the console. Damn near every other console gets revised. If you want the best 360 possible wait until the product line dies. The last revision is likely to be the best. Otherwise don't bitch about revisions. Remember folks: First is almost never best when it comes to tech hardware.
- grexeo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I really don't understand why people are getting upset over this. If you aren't happy with your purchase since this announcement, why did you buy it in the first place? The fact that an updated model has been announced doesn't change the product you purchased.
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"Moral of the story:
Never purchase a 1.0 release created by Microsoft; wait for the initial bugs to be worked out."
That doesn't just apply to Microsoft.
Remember the easily-scratched iPods, the early MacBook Pros and MacBooks, and the PS3?
Very rarely will the first generation of a product be perfect.
"In many ways, Zephyr is Xbox 360 Service Pack 1 lol"
Microsoft improved one of its products, yes. So if you like, yes, it is similar to when Microsoft improved Windows XP. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Sony added a network adapter on the slim PS2. They added an IR receiver (that even works to turn the unit on and off) with the PS2+ (last thick PS2, the quieter one that lost the i.Link port). This IR receiver is also on the slim.
The PS2+ also added progressive scan DVD playback. The slim also kept this.
pegisys:
The first PS1 (JPN only) had s-video and composite jacks on it plus the multi-out. The 2nd version removed the s-video jack (and was about $150 cheaper). Later, even the composite and audio jacks disappeared too. - Cerebral, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17@ilyag
The biggest reason... HD-DVD. If you knew anything about the Content Token and what would happen to all of those that purchased the HD-DVD addon for the 360 if the movie companies decided to turn on the content token (which could happen any time now... the ball is in their court). All of the content from the HD-DVD drive would be DOWNSCALED to 480p... This is a big deal. BTW I, like quite a few people I know, have an HDTV (50" SONY) and there is no reason why I should have to purchase a VGA cable and play on my 4:3 LCD monitor even if the colors are better. The quality between the HDMI and Component cables is negligible at best but then again I am referring to the Content Token and HDMI which if the token is turned on then you would be screwed unless you have HDMI (even if you used VGA because only HDMI and DVI support the Content Token).
@The Wallbanger
The difference is what I mentioned above. It would be the same thing if iTunes changed their codecs to work only with the new generation iPods. I am all for a new version of the 360 which is what this would give with the 65nm that would consume less power and possibly be able to run for longer periods of time due to less heat but I think that MS should release an HDMI out cable (if such a thing is available) for those of us who have invested in their console already.
@virtualball
I guess you do not own or know about the 360 and XBL do you? I am out of space with demos and other stuff.
I would also assume they will release the HDD as an addon for those that have already purchased the 360. I possibly could, however see then putting a HD-DVD drive as well as the HDD internal on this model and selling a NEW sku as a Media Center type version while not including the HD-DVD internal as the new Premium and dropping the Core. Also adjusting the prices accordingly. This would upgrade as well as counter the SONY announcement of the super version of the PS3. Please MS put out an HDMI cable for the v1 consoles. - lithuin, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24Wow there are a lot of whiny people here.
I bought my 360 about a week ago, and this isn't that big of a deal. It's a pretty safe bet that you'll be able to pick up the hard drive upgrade at some point, probably sooner than later. Also, many people consider the picture quality of HDMI inferior to component.
Just suck it up. MS isn't out to screw you, they are improving the system.
They can't win. Don't update the system, people whine. Update it, and people whine. - Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Don't forget that Sony removed the little-used Firewire port on the PS2 in one of their updates.
(Not saying it's all that much of a Bad Thing, just another patch on the list.) - DJDavis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17This reminds me of one of my favorite fables...
Once upon a time, there was this company called Nintendo. Almost everyone in Diggland wanted to be Nintendo's beyatch. Well, one day, Nintendo said to its beyatches, "I shall release a system called the Game Boy Advance, and it shall be good." The NB's flocked to the stores and bought the "GBA's" and they were happy. A year later, the great Nintendo spoke again, "I will be releasing a new Game Boy Advance - one that is better!" The NB's all rejoiced - for their great N could do no wrong. The NB's proclaimed, "Thank you Nintendo! Thank you for giving us what we want, and not screwing us over like MS and Sony! We love buying your slightly upgraded products over and over again," to which Nintendo replied, "Just wait."
A few years later, Nintendo spoke again, "I will be releasing the Dual Screen." The entirety of Diggland rejoiced! The NB's were very, very happy. About a year later, Nintendo spoke, yet again, and said, "I will be releasing the DS Lite!" This made the NB's so happy that they all bought the new and slightly improved DSL as fast as they could. NB's from around globe rejoiced with great happiness. In the land called Japan, the DSL is still almost impossible to find! The NB's again said, "Thank you Nintendo! Thank you for giving us what we want! Thank you for not screwing us like MS and Sony. Thank you for releasing yet another update! We want more!"
To which Nintendo replied, "Just wait my beyatches. For in the future, there will be many more. The Wii shall be updated with Hi-def support, and oh so much more!"
The End.
Come back next time for the story of "The Many Incarnations of the Original Gameboy and Gameboy Color," a Nintendo fan's wet dream! - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The updates are really for the HD content downloads (HDMI-out for the videophiles, bigger hard drive to store it). The updates don't affect gamers or developers at all. The early adoptors with the v1 360 won't be as affected since they tend to be the hardcore GAMERS, and now Microsoft is going for the multimedia all-in-one crowd.
The 65mm chip was planned since last year. Likely they will NOT put the HD-DVD drive internally, since that would bump the system up to $500 or $600. They're still trying to use price point as an advantage against the PS3, remember. - Fenster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I thought the XBox 360 already ran at 1080p without the HDMI? Ars Technica's recent PS3, XBox 360 comparison article mentioned several times that the XBox 360 was putting out 1080p. I am not up on HD lingo. Can the normal person tell the difference between 1080p HDMI connection and a 1080p Component connection or is this truly Video-phile territory? If you watch the movie frame by frame you can see detail differences, but at real speed not real noticeable.
I just got my XBox 360 / HDTV this Christmas and couldn't be happier....I say meh to the new pseudo-announcement. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's incredibly stupid to complain about Microsoft doing this. They are not taking anything away from what you already have. They are doing no harm to you, because any game developed will work the same with both systems.
Getting angry about this would be the same as getting angry because they lowered the price to $199 and $299, after you had bought one for $299 or $399. It's just plain childish and stupid. Also, common sense tells you they'll offer a 120gb HD add on for existing systems. - Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11No, they'll just wait to make any official announcement until the last second (or pull an Apple and not mention it at all...the updated units will just start showing up), that way the general public won't know they're getting screwed and they can make every last dime they can.
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm more worried about the 120GB HDD. Will owners of the original 360 be able to get one? How much will it cost? How will we transfer the data from drive to drive? If Microsoft doesn't release the new HDD for old 360 owners, then yes, the truly are screwing all the early adopters.
- Slippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8More money going to my xbox.
The wife is going to be pissed. :( - chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Firmware flashing does not count as a mod, noobykins.
- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Wow, 120gb HDD, cooler processor, HDMI (if i ever go HD)... dam if I can ever afford the time and money to buy a second console, I'll be getting this version!
At least it should't have as many problems as the original 360s... XD - xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@MrFlesh: Actually, you can put any SATA drive in the 360... you just need to digg around the internet a little :P
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7this will probably be the new "premium" console and the old one will drop to $300, core will be eliminated most likely. I really don't care about HD because my TV is just a 27" SDTV.
- grexeo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Or you could stick with your original XBOX 360, like you were probably planning to prior to reading this news...
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I would due laughing if it did. It would turn all the arguements against the PS3 on thier heads. It would then shine a light on why so many console addons may not be a great thing.
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They said no internal hd-dvd drive.
- fupresti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8720P vs 1080P is really only noticeable in screens bigger than 50". HDMI means nothing to me as my HDTV is 720P and I do not have an HDMI capable receiver. I have no plans to move to 1080P until either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray becomes cheap and available and tv networks move to 1080P cameras, which is not going to happen anytime soon. My XBOX 360 works just fine over componenet witht he digital optical out.
How many people in here bitching about HDMI actually own a 1080P television? - micklerlop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8your kid is lucky if you have one
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"The HDMI would be nice, but my tv only does 1080i, so no biggie there. The difference between 1080i and 1080p isn't that much from what I've read."
Yeah, I have a 60" and the difference isn't really noticeable at all. I mean, it is, but certainly not enough to warrant buying a new TV, spending any crazy amount of money to get it, or anything like that. Nothing like 480i to 1080i, that's for sure. - chad3405, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How do you know that pic wasn't photoshoped? I don't think that it would be that hard for someone to do.
- Nuak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@pwgysis
"actually with the original PS1 all that could be used was composite cables, then they came out with a version that had a multi out jack that could use other video outputs. this was done before the small PSone came out and only a few months to a year after launch"
the multiout jack was actually there when ps1 launched. they simply removed the RCA connection from the console so you couldn't use a standart RCA cable. - SuMizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ Happy
It's just lame. If we had wings, we could fly. The fact remains that the power supply is external and does not add bulk to the size of the 360. If you add it, maybe. But why stop at the power supply? Bunch the Ethernet cable up and tack that on too. It makes the 360 massive. - slyydrr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm still confused as to how this screws you, and in general why everyone is whining. If you don't like the evolution of products, then don't by electronics. A simple thing to just learn to ACCEPT for electronics purchases, is that chances are your products will become outdated through that product's lifespan. Let me ask this: How many people who own 360's honestly own a 1080p HDTV. My guess is not many.
Personally, when I ever do decide to make the switch to a 1080p TV, I'll just buy the VGA adapter. And yea, I'd rather not have to buy a new hard drive for my 360, but if that's the case, I'll suck it up and get a new one anyway, rather than bitch and complain that I got "screwed." I'd MUCH rather this be the situation rather than no advancement at all. - Skunkhair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6you know, i see everyone's whining & bitching and hey, if you've got the bread to spend on that premium HD setup, just be glad you got that. for average joe who spent a good portion of his savings on that 360 i'm pretty damn content with what i got. i'm far off, as i would imagine most users are, from using HDMI. about the only useful thing i see is the hard drive.
- Nintendo5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So what ... like 1% of HDTVs input 1080p?
