- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37What was wrong with the way the old SNES looked and why is this any better? The buttons make it look like a PlaySchool toy.
- stonewaljacksn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19the first mario on super nintendo was one of the greatest games ever.
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It would have been interesting to see the Nintendo Play-Station add on for the SNES.
I also thought that's what this was going to be an article about. - Aewheros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11That would be Super Mario World.
- Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No, I think he means the top loading NES that came out later.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6At first the description made me think that the output to TV looked better for some reason on the PAL SNES.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And I can tell you that I wouldn't have given a ***** either way. SNES owned everything.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No he means the top-load NES (known as Famicom Jr in JP):
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y22/dunkoff/TopLoad1.jpg - tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I remember seeing similar photos in Nintendo Power magazine shortly after the announcement of the SNES. They also depicted the CD ROM drive that was supposed to be made. The PAL version looks like Fisher Price toy, IMHO.
- beatmix01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i remember seeing these markups in EGM back in the day. SNES had it won hands down with Mode 7!
- TheGilmanator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Looks a lot like the US NES 2.0.
- DarknessGP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If I remember correctly the CD drive stuff was actually supposed to be made by Sony, and when Nintendo broke off the deal Sony decided to take the CD stuff and make the Playstation... Also, the Super Famicom also had online ability. Although there was only a handful of downloadable games.
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Eccohawk,
The Gamecube did have online support with a broadband or modem adapter from Nintendo. The X-Band was an after market add-on for the SNES and Genesis. - marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why different designs for PAL and NTSC? Imagine the PS3 looking like a turd when it hits europe... oh wait.
- raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't get the point of this article besides that the case seems more retro.
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, I thought I was the only person who thought this way until I read this article. I used to always complain to my friend about how the US version of the SNES looked goofy compared to the Japan one; nice to see other people who agreed.
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Umm...that looks like ass compared to the one that came to North America. Aside from the purple buttons I always thought the SNES looked awesome. The eject button was pretty clever.
- swgc5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The NTSC SNES looks much better than that pile of crap.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let me set the record straight.
It seems that some uninformed people here don't seem to realize that the PAL SNES looks exactly like the Super Famicom, which is the Japanese SNES, except for the name printed on the top.
Personally, I like the Super Famicom better, I remember seeing it back in the days in an early issue of EGM. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the only reason this is coming out now is because design aesthetics have changed and now this 'appears' to be a cool design. in 96 it wouldn't fly.
- Mistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its true people from USA like the blocky snes where as us in the UK loved the smooth snes, big deal, Nintendo just knew what they was doing with the design and got it right for America as you guys like things big and chunky (look at the xbox), there's nothing wrong with that. we did all look in the magazines and think that the USA snes was so ugly with its purple buttons and its blocky form. And as for the colored buttons, i still say press the blue or red button today with the dreamcast, xbox and 360 because i get mixed up with the y.b.x.a from the snes, man i loved that machine :D
- evilempire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was a second SNES that looked just like that, released after the N64 came out. You are both right...
- LordofChaosIori, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8I thought this was going to be about the disc-drive Sony was supposed to make for it...
- payndz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The US SNES looked crude, blocky and ugly compared to the smooth Japanese/PAL version, in the same way that the Turbografx was a nasty, clunky bloating of the small and sleek PC Engine. I'm sure there must be some social commentary there, similar to why Americans seem to prefer hulking SUVs to Mazda Miatas.
And by making the buttons just two colours (purple and lilac) rather than four, it took away a whole level of accessibility. "Push the red button!" is easier to grasp than "Push the purple button! No, the other one!" - matt0ne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I had a PAL SNES - having grown up in England and I always remember thinking how cool the American ones were.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the NTSC SNES is beautiful.
- doshindude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the redesigned SNES (and NES) 2s look kinda like those screenshots
- Relentl3ss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Give me a Sanyo SF1 anyday :P
Twas a 17 inch portable tv with a built in snes/famicom- You slid the carts in the top and the pads in the front under the screen.
Can't even find a picture of them on google, but they were awesome. - dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the record, I drive a Mazda Miata and I prefer the NTSC SNES :P. Maybe it's just becase it's such a great childhood memory, but I think the purple buttons and the case design look great. And I always went by the button letters without an issue.
- straxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Hey kid. You're ruining the moment. Shut up."
"I could blow up the whole god damned world with this thing..." - itsmattadams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the 2nd version of the SNES, and I think it's the best. The only thing I'd add to it is a power light.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bittorrent anyone?
Gnutella, even?
Psh, noobs. ;) - Coy0te, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It doesn't look like the Pal version to me, maybe color wise. Still though the Pal version was superior. Why they chose to put different shades of purple on the NTSC's buttons I'll never know.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The SNES was the best console ever made.
Let's hope the Wii will be the next SNES. So far it's looking pretty damn good. - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I disagree about the US SNES: liked the design, it had a nice symmetry to it that was lacking in the Genesis (until the case was redesigned). I do agree about the TG16 vs PCE however. The PCE was small, white and symmetrical, whereas the TG16 was more than 2x as wide and unsymmetrical (I didn't care one way or the other about case color). http://www.puntodepartida.com/retroinformatica/maquinadeltiempo/index.php?cual=turbografx for reference images
As for SNES colors, I liked them, and - for me anyway - knowing button positions by letter (Y X B A) was more useful than by color would have been. - dvgraphics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://img.search.com/7/7e/300px-Snes2_sys.jpg
- drwiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this in EGM as well. I remember parading the magazine around to all my friends in grade school (almost had it confiscated).
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Super Nintendo for the ***** win!
I'm so getting the SNES logo tattooed on me.
*Can't wait until 16th birthday, when a tattoo of my choice is promised* - caddyalan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1tzmguitarist talked about comparing the SNES to a "Fisher Price toy." Actually, the Retronauts podcast mentioned this a while ago. The people mentioned that the North American SNES was designed the way it was because - at the time - videogames in general were marketed as toys.
- DarknessGP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1umm, well the only one to mention a console looking like a turd was in reference to the PS3... and last time I checked no one seems to care at the stores. p.s. it's an easy way to attack a console when everyone already knows that it lacks the game play.
- MurderMystery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's like an SNES astronauts would play..in space!
- spaceyraygun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i recently spent a lot of time looking for those famicom mario world screenshots. is there a rom of that version floating around? i remember seeing it in a magazine a long time ago (maybe nintendo power or game pro) and ever since i've wanted to play it.
super dugg! - vtsquire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meh, the wii case shouldve been molded to look like an original NES.
- BigSlacker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Some people have a very odd definition of "look sweet". I think the NTSC one had a much better case design.
- 98acura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1all you europeans keep whining, I walked past a stack of 60gb models at bestbuy yesterday.. I was the only person that showed any interest, and that was just to pickup a box to see if they were really inside.. They were just in the way of everyone trying to walk past them.
- shuffle2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1hehe marnaq
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2What's with all the design fetish among geeks? I couldn't care less whether a console was built to look like a giant turd if the games were good, so why do so many fanboys compare design as though it's a key component of gameplay? And pining over alternate design work for a 15 year old system is beyond pathetic. The article implies that this guy's childhood would have been much better if he'd been able to play the exact same video games on a system with a different case design.

- Eccohawk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@DarknessGP
The American SNES had online capabilities too, using the X-band Modem, but AFAIK it failed somewhat miserably, which i'm guessing is the reason that every system by nintendo since then up until the Wii did not have online capabilities (my guess is fear of a second failed attempt), whereas the PS2 and the Xbox had online play offerings starting a few years back. - sylentmode, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1OP is wrong, it doesn't look cooler
buried as inaccurate -
