- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40I think this is a good representation of how the Wii and PS3 will compete.
The DS offers a new way to interact with the game its also cheaper, qualities it shares with the Wii.
On the Sony side you have a expensive over done machine that isn't selling. - Paktu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32Marked as lame. I'm not usually a grammar nazi, but this story has at least two dozen different typos. How do you expect people to take your thoughts seriously when you haven't even mastered the English language?
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20He's my understanding of the problem with PSP games: They're just like console games.
Why is that a problem? because you don't play handheld games like console games; you play them for a minute then put them away. So games that you have to log a lot of time into before receiving any significant reward naturally will not make great hanheld games. Handheld games playing morrowind on a handheld just wouldn't be the same as playing it at home, and that's why I think the problem is with PSP games. - EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"Sony doesn't care about gamers"
- Kanye West Jr. - RexKwando, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20I refrain from selling my psp with the hope that there will be a good game released soon. I've held this belief for about 6 months now. The DS is looking better and better compared to my $300 paper weight!
- Zephyrus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Yep, it's dying.. as great as the homebrews can be, nothing can be as good as a wonderful strategic game or rpg on the UMD.. Sony is going to lock those great games that are coming on "3.0" and not even DevHook can launch those game without developing for another few months, where new great games will come.. this goes on forever..
- r0ck3tm4nn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Damn straight. Games like Lumines and Hot Shots golf are all that I play. Have really touched anything else. PSP needs more crazy puzzle games!
- benliebowitz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I hate to be overly critical, but this article reads like it was written by a thirteen year old.
- binkjuice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11What's PSP.. Is it popular or something?
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm a PSP owner since launch day. Here's my honest assessment of the pros & cons of the PSP:
PRO:
-Versatile. Movies, music, books, pictures, games all in one box.
-Beautiful screen
-PS1 emulator coming soon
-Homebrew
CONS:
-Games are mostly ports and rehashes of PS1/2 games. May not be a problem for everyone but it bugs me.
-Lack of good anti-aliasing makes most of the 3D games look like total garbage. I HATE jaggies.
-Control scheme sucks. It needs a second analog stick and an improvement to the stick itself (softer rubber top instead of the hard little plastic disk which makes my finger tip hurt)
-Load times & excessive UMD drive noise
-Web browser too slow to be useful.
-No text input device. They should have included a touchscreen or at least BlueTooth for an external rollup KB.
I don't think the PSP is all that bad but I believe there are a couple fundamental design mistakes (UMD, poor anti-aliasing & single analog design) that really cripple me from enjoying the system. I expect Sony to release a PSP 2 within 2-3 years that will fix most of these problems. My advice is to wait for that or get a DS for now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Hopefully they can get their flash cartridge UMD replacements out the door soon. No load times FTW!!!
I am looking forward to LocoRoco in the short term however. - flippedcracker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7that's exactly right. you needs games that are quick to get into, and kind of mindless. and more puzzle games. tetris was the reason the gameboy was as successful as it was. sure, there's lumines, but what else is there?
- Trigonometron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sony has heard all of this before, everyone has been talking about the PSP in this way almost since day 1. The thing is that Sony has heard, and is not listening. Even though the PSP is more expensive than the DS, I think it could've performed well if their attitude towards it was different. This is a fundamental problem right now that extends to the PS3 as well. I'm glad the PS2 is still strong!
- skinticket, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14good story and its true. All the games for the psp are boring, it needs that good game.
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7PSPCrazy.com was the biggest warez psp site ever, looked like they changed around. this site banned me because i had a legit psp site back in the day, banned my ip. so no digg for them deleting peoples threads on their forums, no nothing for these guys.
- Frank_the_Tank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I had to re-read a few of the sentences more than once...
Not exactly Shakespeare, now, is he? - silo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I bought my PSP at launch. Just sold it last month and bought a DS lite at launch. Best decision I could've made, by far. I noticed the layer of dust on my PSP and thought, "Ok this isn't right. Something's gotta shake." One interesting game on the PSP horizon: LocoRoco, and I'm only mildly interested in it. Now, I've got a ton of DS games I'm wanting to try out, and I'm loving the ones I have now.
I was a die hard PSP advocate, but my enthusiasm was forced to dwindle down. - foofightrs777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's a rather narrow minded perspective. If someone has interesting and compelling content it should be dugg regardless of the format.
This however was neither interesting or compelling. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5hey i thought daxter was pretty fun. i play it on the train, good stuff.
- vanlandw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6yeah agreed...I'm normally not that way either but for a guy looking for support from two communities his spelling should be checked...and the OP has a spelling error too :-[
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"they need to start working on making some fun and exceedingly original games, and even better then that they need to make support for the other big thing for the PSP, Homebrew."
this is so true. sony needs to open it self up to homebrew. it doesnt have to support it just keep the doors open - diafel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That article read like it was written by a 16 year old.
- somesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3its funny how everytime nintendo releases something new its innovation, but if sony wants to add a motion-sensitive camera and gps, then theyre just stupid.
c'mon, people. eyetoy was one of the most creative things sony ever did. gps is a useful device, and I'd be interested to see what sort of gaming applications it has. - Frank_the_Tank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, I'd like to have a good variety of both: simple, fun, quick games for those throw-away gaming sessions, or something deep for those long plane rides (or when I simply don't have access to my main system).
The problem is really that the games are, for the most part, mediocre, and are not made correctly for a system with a weird, single analog stick (*cough* Tomb Raider *cough*).
Note: the PSP has an excellent standby feature that allows those longer games to be broken up in more bite-size bits. Again, the system I think is great, just not a lot of the games... - quanticle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's the thing though. If you look at any of Sony's technologies over the past 20 years or so, you'll see that Sony has always had reluctance about making its technology open and modifiable. I have the mini-disc as my favorite example. Here was a great little magneto-optical media that held quite a bit, and could have mounted a challenge to some of the early hard-drive based mp3 players. Yet Sony locked it down, and made everybody use their proprietary file format, killing the technology by keeping it closed.
I see the same thing happening with UMD and the PSP. - banjokazooie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You need help, spifwand.
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dear Author of this Article:
If the PSP is a bad handheld and you don't like the games, and it doesn't please you, I have some info for you: You don't like the PSP.
Why not sell it? DS Lites are only like $130..... I love mine.
Sincerely,
Me - bobeotm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For anyone who says there are no good games for the PSP are simply not caring to look around, or they have lived under a rock for the past few months. The quality of titles are getting better and better as the months go on, there are alot of good games if anyone actually looked.
Many of the anti-sony folks looking for any reason to bash the system simply ignore the number of good titles coming out. Daxter, Megaman Powered Up, Gripshift, Mercury, Field Commander, Virtua Tennis, not to mention the games on the horizone (such as LocoRoco and Tekken: Dark Resurection) and many more. No one can say there are NO good games. If they do, they must live under a rock or cover their eyes when the look at the PSP rack.
Could the PSP use MORE good games, absolutely; but to say there arent any whatsoever is a bit stupid. Although the DS is selling more in Japan, the race is far closer here in the US and elsewhere in the world. The have both shipped roughly the same number of units with roughly the same number of those units sold worldwide. So to say one has already failed or one has already succeeded when its only been a little over a year is a little premature. - beachesandmusic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Another day, another Anti-Sony article posted on Digg. Marked as spam.
I really don't see why a small number of people are against the PSP. It's selling great. Has great games, like Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, and has a lot of good upcoming titles like Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters.
I'll take GTA, Ratchet, SOCOM, and the PSone archive over Nintendogs and Metroid. - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8And who's to blame? Sony.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4boring? are you mad? http://www.gamespot.com/psp/action/locoroco/screenindex.html
- foofightrs777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree as well. And really, I don't think there was even an original thought in that "editorial".
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2maybe the tech community is (inherently) more informed of technology. sure, it sold well - but in the long run (because the ds has some inkling of lasting appeal) we know it will be an utter failure in comparison to the ds.
in my opinion, the psp is the most gimmicky gaming machine i've ever seen - afreytes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't make it to the bad grammar. I only made it as far as the first spam t, I mean, smart tag...
- n3rrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A negative post about Sony and oGMo hasn't jumped in to comment yet? Surprising.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think the psp really isn't comprable to the ds. i bought a ds to play games. if i wanted a pda id buy one, not a psp.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Try monster hunter freedom. Its a little difficult but the graphics are to die for.
Also if they have an online component here, it will be the best PSP game to date. - Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's the truth, but isn't that the case with most "journalism" online these days? If a writer is any good, they get hired to write. Once they've gotten hired to write, they are part of the "mainstream media". And the mainstream media are the bad guys, right?
Well that's what the Web 2.0 hype told me, but all I've got left are these substandard articles that desperately need an editor and a writer with some talent. - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quote flippedcracker: "quick to get into"
That's the word I was looking for. - pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buying a PSP was a mistake, I should have bought a DS. =( Nintendo, I have forsaken thee.
- lordkosc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Erm..... Try Nintendo DS and Sony PSP in your google trend! They are both handhelds! And I like this google search trend graph! Never new it existied till now :( I feel so deprived...
http://www.google.com/trends?q=nintendo+ds%2C+sony+psp&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all - shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't have one but i want one for
worms, lemmings, katamari psp version (whatever it's called) and wipeout that's it - philomatic, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1No good games, plus Sony's crazy proprietary business model and the constant fight just to be able to get homebrew apps killed the PSP. It's sad too because it's a great piece of hardware...
- lastingdamage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I spam a google trends proof statement of just how superior x is over y. Use this technique in the boardroom all the time, they haven't a clue, graphs rule the corporate world!
http://www.google.com/trends?q=nintendo+wii%2C+sony+psp&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all - Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why take one over the other when you can take both instead?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does it say anyhting about the psp begin a bad system? Im sorry but mabye i forgot to read that part haha. look what its saying, its saying sony should focous on making better game, there are only a few good games out right now, and we need more. Try reading it before posting crap like that. The ds is a good system, and so is the psp, but sony needs to start concentrating on the games more then the useless add ons that come alter.
- yeahitzdat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah sony needs to do better but all their focus is on the ps3 now
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Chris. I think that's probably pretty accurate, except the assertion that the PSP isn't selling. In Europe it is selling at pretty much the same rate as the DS.
- Mizark, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9Daily Sony bitch article. Promoted to the front page so people can recite their oh so very fresh, and never heard before takes on how Sony sucks.
- Rousterfar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This article is a joke. The PSP is selling well and it has a good line-up of games. Just because the DS has a better one, does not mean the PSP is hurting that bad.
