- gtawh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+74"the X-sphere is just an evolution on the original Xbox logo."
Microsoft probably did that to coincide with the Xbox360 being an evolution of the original Xbox. - alec1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53I love the whole thing about Microsoft stealing the idea of a circle from Sega.
- KhaotikEvile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49Yawn. Anyone else getting tired of the "witty, edgy, in-your-face" put-down lists? It's boring as hell.
- mojo4126, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38this guy is so biased it just makes reading the article pointless
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35This one's not even particularly witty, or well written. In fact, the "analysis" is downright lame.
"[The N64] logo is pretty similar to the PS logo. Same colors, same 3D-ness. With a track record like Sony’s, I’d say that Nintendo probably came up with it first."
Wow. Thanks for that bit of pure speculation.
"SEGA Dreamcast: Poor like Dreamcast. ... Still one of my personal favorites, too."
Wow, some random blogger likes the dreamcast logo. Alert the internets.
It's cool to see all the logos in chronological order, but other than that, the commentary in this article is completely worthless. - CraigCarlyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32I actually really dig both of the Xbox logos, I'm not sure what the author is complaining for.
- CameronHigh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Great idea for an article that was written by someone who has no idea what he's talking about...
- Nobiting, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30The PlayStation's logo has been the same since day one...it's there.
- mb3581, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26The N64 has always been the best and most creative console logo. Consoles were just getting into the realm of true 3D and this logo did an excellent job at advertising that.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Guess what? On the PS2 and PS3, you can rotate the tiny PS logo 90 degrees!!!!! If that doesn't change the mind of people on the fence about PS3, I just don't know what will...
p.s. - why are people digging MajorCox up? He's wrong, the PS logo IS the PS3's logo. - laplacian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22the 3do logo is wrong. it looks like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/canfood/408424203/
- bstew22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17This was lame-o! I thought I was going to learn about how the gaming companies came up with their logo's..... No. I get a blog that says "Jaguar: This one is freaky, but in a stylish and modern way"
wtf? - markp93, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15yeah...
from an article entitled 'The History of Video Game Console Logos', I expected something more than just
"I don’t really understand what this logo stands for, but it must mean something cool, as it can still be seen on t-shirts and stickers everywhere."
when referring to the Atari 2600 logo. I mean, who came up with it, what does it symbolize, etc... - gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16An okay article, at best. The writing was sub-par:
"Nintendo GameCube: Oh jeez. Nintendo messed up by releasing the system in that cute purple color, and it seems the logo fell to the same affliction. Reminiscent of the N64’s “3D-ness,” the GameCube logo was actually kind of a cool design. Got the whole cube look down perfectly, and it’s nice and simple. Color choice aside, Nintendo did a pretty good job with it."
Saying that they messed up the system and the logo, then calls the logo cool is odd... - miggz06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Anyone realize this really isn't a history of console logos? Instead, it's just logos from some popular consoles with no actual history about the logo. He just describes them. Any idiot can do that.
- dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The person who wrote this is an idiot. Who Diggs this *****?
- mwosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"[Wii's logo is] trendy to the point of nausea, but it’s not as annoying as say, a big green X."
I've never felt that a letter was annoying. This guy needs to spend less time looking at the box and more time looking at the screen. - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11No, but they did have a Spider-Man 3 banner ad. Isn't that close enough?
Actually, they didn't. I just wanted to be witty and say that. - ummagummas08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10And its not even in Chronological order!! I'm pretty sure the Xbox 360 came out close to a YEAR before the Wii, it came out before the wii even had it's logo assigned to it. So I buried this as innacurate, not to mention the fact that the 'witty commentary' wasn't very witty or very commentary-ie
- dvgraphics, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Gee. Just what I needed: An analysis of logos by someone who doesn't know anything about design...or writing.
- Skavenblight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It looks like this guy has an irrational hate of Microsoft.
He mentions that the Sega logo is pretty similar to the Nintendo logo, and leaves it at that. Then he somehow makes a connection between the Xbox360 logo and the Dreamcast logo and says Microsoft stole the logo from Dreamcast (while it is very far from even beginning to look like the Dreamcast logo). - videomeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@hartley
"..PS3 has Spiderman rip-off lettering"
it's not a rip off if you own the property/brand in question - gislib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@gtawh: "Microsoft probably did that to coincide with the Xbox360 being an evolution of the original Xbox."
Well, by putting the original logo's "X" on a sphere, Microsoft was probably emphasizing the "360" aspect of the consoles name, as in 360° on all axis or full 3-D. - JaiHaru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I love how the poster describes it as "witty commentary,". You need to get smarter friends if this is witty, and I agree with others, since when did "history" become stream of conscious bitching from someone with no background in either of the fields necessary to write this article: design and journalism. BOOOOO-urns.
- Therum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This guy is an idiot. The article is total *****, and all the Sony/Microsoft hate is annoying.
Not to mention the Sega fellatio....
(Edit: Don't get me wrong, I like Sega, but he's obviously a fanboy) - NetPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm hoping this article is a joke, or at least a lame attempt at one. There's so much incorrect and wrong with it that I won't even bother getting into them. One more than one you didn't even include the correct logo.
So kudos on getting on the front page with a ***** post - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I love the whole thing about Microsoft stealing the idea of a circle from Sega."
Well the person hired as head of marketing for 360 was also the head of marketing for the Dreamcast so it's not too suprising that Microsoft stole them. - megaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What authority! What conviction! What penetratingly insightful commentary! This guy really knows his gaming logos!
- thegallery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This author has absolutely no knowledge of design theory. And he refers to the logos as if they were designed by the console makers themselves. Yeah, right. Buried for being stupid.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_commercial_failures_in_computer_and_video_gaming#Virtual_Boy
- JagoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That is a pretty incomplete history...where are the logos for the Odyssey, IntelliVision, etc.?
Plus has the guy ever heard of "proof reading"? - fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ok the writer is obviously a Nintendo fanboy...
- Mengoxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah (*2)
...a simple Google search could have told him this much about the Atari logo:
http://www.myatari.net/issues/jun2003/fujilogo.htm
Instead we get random ramblings about "Hmmm, like this, don't like that" - jayfarer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The GameCube logo is probably my favorite. There's just a lot of cool animations you could do with it. It's just a clever design that fits in a G, a C and a whole lot of squares within squares.
- Psyael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Whoever wrote this isn't very informed. He complains about Xbox 360 marketing "stealing" from Dreamcast marketing.
Yeah, you think MAYBE Peter Moore (papa for the US Dreamcast operation) going over to Microsoft might cause some similarities? - ortucis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I will be avoiding this witty commentary from this witty site in the wear future.
Yeah. Digg me down. - fuzzynyanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, Peter Moore, currently in Microsoft, did work for Sega of America and was part of the Dreamcast marketting.
- Shaflugi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Guess what? On the PS2 and PS3, you can rotate the tiny PS logo 90 degrees!!!!!"
Glad I'm not the only one that noticed that on the PS2. - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4LOL, he actually claims Sony stole Nintendo's logo. Haha, grow up fanboy.
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4PS2 logo: http://users.skynet.be/pccool/images/marques/ps2-logo.jpg
PS3 logo: http://www.journaldugamer.com/images/logos/playstation_3_logo.jpg - HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The author of the article is an idiot.
1) He doesn't know his console history, as the list is missing Mattel's IntelliVision, Vectex, Odyssey and the PS3 (I'm probably missing some here).
2) He doesn't know anything about logo design. He has plenty of moronic comments regarding various logos, but what caught my eye was that he mentioned that the 360 logo is ripped off from Sega, not just once, but twice. The 360 logo is not a "rip off" of the Dreamcast logo. The Dreamcast uses a spiral in its design, the 360 uses a 3D sphere with an "X" sliced into it, and they both use different typefaces. The circles he appears to be confused about are the concentric circles used as secondary design elements. These do not look like spirals and circles have been used in design since its inception.
If you want to see an example of someone copying a logo, do an image search in Google for "Quark logo". - DirtyWorker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He forgot to mention that the colored dots in the SNES logo for Japan and Europe are the buttons on the controller.. And yes, this guy is retarded, truly no understanding of design and branding.
"After something like the Genesis logo, the Saturn seems a little pussy to me. It’s cool to have a planet as a logo." Well duh, it's SATURN, you know, the sixth planet from the sun...? - BigEv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Same here man, I definitely dig the NEO GEO logo.
- iamabe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4retarded. buried.
- speedk0re, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6where the hell is Virtual Boy?!?!?!$*#
- CoskuT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How is this the history when he he doesn't know anything but his bias/opinion?
- loneraven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea, definite bias. He slams several logos for being bland and boring, but he praises the Wii logo. Seriously, the Wii logo is as bland as it gets.
Also, the lack of the Playstation logos is kind of stupid. Saying that the PS logo is the main logo for all the playstation consoles is like saying the Nintendo logo is the main logo for all of Nintendo consoles.
I don't know what inspired this guy, but I would love to hear more on how he gathered that the xbox 360 logo was copied from the dreamcast logo. - chrislee149, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I actually like the NeoGeo logo. It has bright colors and that edginess similar to the Dreamcast logo.
- iStunT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3O.K. This is Lameeeeeeeee
- Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article is idiotic.
Urgh. -
