- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+15The Dreamcast has to still be one of the best platforms for cheapskate gamers. Not only are most of the best games dirt cheap, but the system can is also one of the most affordable out there...
- racketboy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+12Just wanted to clarify the goal of my guide.... since my site (and my personal gaming habits) revolve around previous gaming generations, that's what I focused on.
I actually did some research about cheap games for the 360, Wii, and PS3, but there aren't that many out there. The games under $10 are usually pretty mediocre. The only exceptions would be like Perfect Dark Zero and PGR3.
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with playing older games as long as the game is solid. Why spend $50 or $60 on a game just because its new when there are so many amazing games out there that are dirt cheap and waiting to be played. If you've actually already played all of them that interest you, then fine. But if not, you're probably missing out on some great experiences -- many of which might actually play on your newer machines because of backwards compatibility.
The only thing that I thought of that might be useful to add to my guide is perhaps a best-of Virtual Console and XBLA list as there are many excellent games on both of those download services that are an excellent value.
Anyway, thanks for the Diggs and I hope you find this list to be useful. - inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+9You can't quite get any current-gen games that cheap...
Besides, you can play many PS1, PS2, Gamecube, and XBox games on "current" systems. - racketboy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8Dreamcast FTW!
- racketboy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6Don't know how that happened :) They are on there now -- thanks for catching that!
- unicronband, on 11/14/2007, -1/+7I'm glad to see they had Blast Corps on the N64 list. That game was an assload of win.
- racketboy, on 11/14/2007, -1/+6I think most would agree that Altered Beast is more of a nostalgic favorite than a truly great game.
- racketboy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4No problem -- glad I could help :)
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -1/+5Doesn't emuparadise defeat the purpose of "cheap games"?
- TH3W1R3D, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Great list on the xbox section. Forgot about Jet Set Radio Future. That game was AWESOME - buying it next chance I get.
- racketboy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4You realize there are many other great games on the NES that are a bit more deserving. I had to draw the line somewhere.
- TH3W1R3D, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Found it damn useful, and I think now I'll start focusing more on buying some of these cheap games. 6 great old games for 1 brand new game. Great deal.
Thanks for the contribution. - avgbody, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3This list might help decide what games to download for my Wii and Xbox 360.
Digg for "Star Raiders" on the atari 2600. - domdunc, on 11/14/2007, -1/+3I love the Dreamcast. Although I've owned 3 and they've all died on me. Can't beat a bit of Ikaruga.
- SPIZER, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Dugg since it mentions Killer Instincts. That game was badass!
- devo6273, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2You might want to consider that some of the older NES games can be had for cheaper on Wii arcade if you have one. Punch-out for example is only $5 I believe.
- atomicpoet, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Intellivision definitely was underrated. It has much better colour display than the 2600.
- Nac85, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1I am very sad to not see Altered Beast on the list for Sega. Altered Beast was probably the greatest game ever, just because of the introduction shouting at me to "Rise from your grave!"
- juniorb, on 11/14/2007, -2/+3And leave the house to have to buy them??! Blasphemy!
- iamnos, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1One of my personal favourites for the NES was Desert Commander. A strategy game, best played with two people.
- spyrochaete, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Blogspam is when you link to a blog that in turn links to the real content. Racketboy is the author of all this content and the link posted takes you right there. This is the best kind of blog link one could hope for, but your baseless prejudice against the medium is noted.
- atomicpoet, on 11/14/2007, -2/+3I decided to see what he has for the 2600, since I own one. I'm sad Frostbite and Missile Command aren't on the list.
- racketboy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1And if you can find them for less than $10, I'll gladly shake your hand...
- yoyobean, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1definitely -- got it at a garage sale with about 7 other good titles.
- razrielle, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Yes but he forgot the best game the system has...House of the Dead 2
- atomicpoet, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1The arcade version was better.
- TH3W1R3D, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Its all about the bargain bin. Anyway I find that the best place to look is at smaller stores that focus on gaming. Sometimes they have those old cheap games just sitting in the back somewhere.
- spyrochaete, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1I find that I have trouble playing some retro games on anything but the original controllers. Punch-Out is definitely one of those games.
- aywwts4, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1I would argue you would have a pretty hard time (Not saying its impossible, just saying its not easy) to find some of those 64 games (zelda, smash bros etc) for under 10 dollars unless you do some pretty serious bargain bin diving. For example the cheapest used on amazon is 15 dollars with shipping, used Nintendo is really going up in value. Good choices though.
- atomicpoet, on 11/14/2007, -1/+2How is this blog spam? It's a great resource.
- eternal464, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1great list
- yoyobean, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Intellivision emulator rocks! i used to crush at Pitfall in 1982. should add that to your list, along w/ other emulation... 720 has to be my fave on Mame right now.
just sayin' - racketboy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1House of the Dead was too expensive for the list -- at least when I created that particular entry.
- racketboy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Consider yourself very lucky -- $5 is a steal for Ico -- on eBay or Amazon, it usually goes for much more.
- Paroparo, on 11/14/2007, -3/+3CD-Rs are pretty cheap these days...
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -2/+2no way...
- atomicpoet, on 11/14/2007, -1/+1I've been to your site many times,, and I salute you, good sir. Until the Wii came out, all my games were on the 2600, C64, Genesis, NES, SNES, Colecovision, 3D0, and PS One. The old games understood that the purpose of gaming was to game. There wasn't any contrived sense of trying to be "art". The purpose was to engage you in a sense of wits, to master the controls, and to see if you could triumph against the machine. I'm glad these games are just starting to make a comeback.
Have you tried Mercury Meltdown Revolution for the Wii? It's only $20. - spyrochaete, on 11/14/2007, -1/+1Confidential Mission is better IMHO, though Grandia 2 is the best DC game!
- yoyobean, on 11/14/2007, -1/+1also where's Ico for PS2? that's an absolute classic, found it for $4.99 a few weeks ago.
- TH3W1R3D, on 11/14/2007, -2/+1I have to admit at this point, other than the Xbox, PS2, PS1, and Gamecube, I would just use and emulator to play these games. They work pretty well and obviously are free.
- crossers, on 07/14/2008, -2/+0This list will help me! thanks!

- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -4/+2gamestop.com and stores carry a large number of cheap used games for older systems
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -4/+1no Baseball Stars for the NES? pretty unrealistic if you ask me...
- MusicMagi, on 11/14/2007, -3/+0I'm sorry but if you don't own Final Fantasy II and III for the SNES, you don't deserve to have one
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -11/+1wtf is the point of a list if you aren't gonna include current systems?
- juniorb, on 11/14/2007, -10/+0Thanks! emuparadise here I come!
