I'm a huge fan of the original and played the entire thing through another time just before IW was released. What a mistake that was! IW, as the post states, ripped out all of the complexity and depth that made Deus Ex stand out.
All that being said, I went back and played through Invisible War again recently (with a high-rez texture pack). Surprisingly, it wasn't as bad as I remembered. It wasn't a good game, but when I wasn't trying to compare it to the original it wasn't too bad. Yes, it does lack the complexity of the original and the story isn't anywhere near as good, but it was indeed decent. Of course, I still can't put Deus Ex in front of the title. And I got to play Solid Snake for 45 minutes...then they dump this whiny bitch Raiden and his whiny bitch girlfriend on me? When I press the X button he does some stupid unimaginable gravity-defying flip kick? Then the whole terrorist attack isn't even real, it is a simulation to gather data to train soldiers?

Chrono Cross was one of the best RPG titles to came out on the Play Station, it was a really good game and good story. To me, it lived up to its predecessor, maybe it wasn't better in the sense that Chrono Trigger was something completely new and original at the time but that doesn't mean that the sequel was disappointing in any way.

While I was miffed that I had to play as Raiden for most of the game, it still had an enthralling (though confusing at times) story, awesome villains, and really tight gameplay. The only game I played through more than MGS2 was MGS; I could hug corners and hold up bad guys in the Big Shell for hours. Plus, there is an awesome pay-off for introducing Raiden when you play MGS4 (he goes from "wimp" to a totally badass ninja in no time).

I agree in that Chrono Trigger was out of left field and captured so many people, but Chrono Cross was just as every bit a great game that doesn't get as much love as it should.

The only thing that would make a game like Chrono Cross bad is "nostaliga bias", meaning "zomg it's not Chrono Trigger." When I got the American SMB2 I wanted to tear up the Mushroom Kingdom and stomp the ***** out of some goombas...instead I was running around throwing turnips at midgets. When The Lost Levels was released in the states I was overjoyed, the game is pure platforming bliss. I'm still waiting for Nintendo to release another difficult 2D mario game.
