- gotmunchiez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47No.1 choice is spot on, but "Xbox" and "Dreamcast" wierder than "Wii"? I don't think so.
- sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31You do know that 360 is a number, don't you?
- raptordrew, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29What a ***** lame article - it's like they just randomly picked names from a hat or something.
- Cr0z, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18If that's how you spell 'yes' in french, I imagine you didn't have much luck in the subject at school.
Oui. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Lynx? Sega Nomad?
number one on my list would be the Wonderswan Color - yuriw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I think gamecube and xbox 360 are fine names. There's nothing wrong with them. My parents now call any console an xbox, so thats got to mean its a catchy name.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14hehe.. since we got the original nes when i was 4.. my parents have been calling any system a nintendo
- purple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Think about the name PlayStation for a moment. It is a station, that you play at. The name isn't wierd at all.
- swoosh_bnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yeah, how can the Wii not be higher on the list than Xbox 360? The Xbox 360 at least has a little justification, emphasis on little.
- kristablaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't understand what's weird about Gamecube or N-Gage specifically, it's pretty straightforward thinking really!
- Optimaximal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What the hell is so wierd about a reduction in the words 'Family Computer'
- Maniaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@chedabob
Not so much your $0.02 but rather Nintendo's multi-million dollar ad campaign ;) - sato, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9GameCube? WTF?? More like GameRectangularPrism!
- Retuobak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Gamecube and Xbox 360 weirder than Wii?
Wii is definitely the most unusual name of those three. - CptCancer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Am I the only one who thought number one would be the Game.com?
- bobotheking, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I've always felt that Sega was the master of naming consoles. Most other gaming companies have just gone for sequential names. Examples:
Nintendo --> Super Nintendo
Gameboy --> Gameboy Advance
Xbox --> Xbox 360
PlayStation --> PlayStation 2 (--> PlayStation Portable) --> PlayStation 3
(God, I hate Sony's names...)
Nintendo's consoles in particular have a habit of being either bland or cryptic. Consider the Nintendo 64, the GameCube, and the Nintendo DS. Each of those names describes something about the system, but they're neither creative or particularly memorable.
The only exception was Sega, who really tried to make each console name unique and interesting:
Genesis --> Saturn --> Dreamcast
Although none of those names give much indication what the system is capable of or even that it's used for playing video games, at least the names were memorable. Nintendo seems to have finally caught on to this idea with the Wii, although the jury's still out as to whether that's a good name or a bad one. - alphacorvus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Pasokon is Japanese for PC, derived from Personal Computer (PAaSOnaru KONpyuutaa), so Famicon (often spelled Famicom in English) is just a variation of an established Japanese word.
That said, in any language, Wii is definitely the weirdest. - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What, because his opinion differs from yours?
Uhh... - i64X, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Whoever made this list is retarded. This list is populated with ultra popular video game consoles whose names aren't really that bad. Gamecube? You wanna know why it's named that? It plays games and is shaped like a cube. Un-creative? Yes. "Weird?" Not really.
What about FM Towns Marty? That should surely be up there. I can think of tons more. Apple Pippin, Fairchild Channel F, Playdia, Amstrad GX4000, Sega SG-1000 Mark III, Emerson Arcadia 2001 (released in 1982), etc. are all weirder than what's on this list. - jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Gamecube is not weird its called what it is a cube that plays games, wii on the other hand shoul dbe number one
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Wow... dumb article... besides, they forgot Wonderswan, Matsuhita 2, Neo-Geo, Tandy, Commodore 64 (that number is funny now), & Atari (Atari being "winner" in Japanese but ironically this American company invariably loses).
Also Gamecube? The name's pretty fitting seeing how it's a game system that's shaped like a cube... Dreamcast wasn't so bad either in comparison to "Black-Belt" or whatever they were going to call it. - PoVRAZOR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, what the heck. The swan was totally #1. Game Axe, GP32, Phantom. 'cmon gamer sites.
- qualish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I couldn't help my dam self. : X
Damn - 83457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wii should have been in top three
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the dreamcast was just that, a dream cast of manufacturers,developers and talents, everything working perfectly for the first time in gaming history.
The Wii is still an extremely dumb name, and deserves to be number 1. - kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3For those not familiar with Gizmondo it wasn't only the name that was a bit off. Check out this flowchart of business and other connections for the company.

The central guy Stefan Eriksson was the guy you might have read about who crashed a Ferrari Enzo in California and ended up making a deal for 3 1/2 years in prison for embezzlement and drunk driving
See http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=20917 - uthaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My vote goes for the Apple Pippin. Where the hell did they get that name? It was voted one of the 25 worst tech gadgets EVER. From Apple, go figure...
- bagboyrebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ purple
Yeah, and the gamecube is a cube that you play games on. The point is that most of these consoles shouldn't be on the list. If you include some of these console names in this list, then playstation should be there too. - dpeck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3optimaximal: hey, i have an idea. let's take everything literally. idiot.
- rbond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was thinking the same thing when I saw the Gizmodo. I used to play that all the time when I was in middle school. I even almost got the modem for the system.
- Pooavenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a lame attempt to get hits for a site that won't matter in 15 minutes.
- raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, and I don't understand how Virtual Boy made it onto the list (crappy console, but merely mediocre name.... like CDi, which I don't think was even meant to be a game system) and, for example, Wonder Swan didn't. I know the Wonder Swan was pretty nice, but if I ever saw one in a store without having heard of it, I'd assume it was one of those Chinese GBA knockoffs with a NES-on-a-chip playing 70 no-name "Hong Kong Original" games.
Hell, "Atari" was as weird a name when it came out as "Wii" is today. We just don't think of it that way because we've had 35 years to get used to it.
On the other hand, I guessed the Colecovision would be #2 (as much as I loved the console, we made fun of the name back in 1982 as well, and throughout the 80's you could just stick "-vision" on the end of a company name to make a product sound stupid) and I wasn't far off. Yay me. - 3point1four, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is one lame article. I figured he'd dig something up that would be at least fun to read, but saying stuff like "game cube is too generic" but then saying "Nintendo 64" was a great name is just a lame read.
- supertom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Gizmondo is a hilarious name!!
- lofiboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you ***** kiddnig me?
Wii takes a hell of a lot less explanation then where "360" came from.
I just say "Wii, you know, like the word 'we' .. let's just play some tennis." - envy860, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3PlayStation is not weird, but sounds like a playschool thingamabob. It is a very nin creative name. That said, so was gamecube, and xbox. Atleast the 360 is a semi interesting name... (Come on really, PLAYSTATION 9?)
- PKO17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that the Wii should be considered the weirdest name but other than that I don't find any other names exactly "weird".
I think the best names are the ones like, "Wonderswan", "Dreamcast", "Playdia", etc. Names like "Gamecube", "Xbox", and "Playstation" suck; yes it's a cube that plays games; yes it's a box with an 'X' on it; yes it's a station you play at. That doesn't mean it's a good name. I doubt anyone would have liked the names, "Nintendo Gameplayer" or "Sony Control-stuff-on-TV-Machine". - swaters210, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not that i'm bashing the gaming console--i love it to death-- but the Xbox and Xbox 360 still sounds like a name that Mad TV's Spishak would come up with for their gaming console.
- EmperorAwesome, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6360 is pretty *****. I was really hoping for NextBox.
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aside from having the most absurd marketing strategy in the history of consoles, the Apple Pippin also had a rather absurd name:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pippin - saladtossser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Are they high? Virtual Boy kicks ass!
- WildKard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually like the name Gizmondo. I mean, I agree the actual system isn't worth playing... but the name itself? nothing wrong with it... though it does sound quirky in a swiss-army knife kind of way. Or maybe a super hero on Nickelodeon.
Of course, for balance, I didn't mind saying ColecoVision, which is also on the list. Got to name it something and it's strange that they didn't call out the competitor, Intellivision for a similar sounding name.
But yeah, I agree with the other digg comments saying this definitely could have been a MUCH better list. - somesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its certainly a weirder name than some of the other things on the list.
- Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm guessing that Neo Geo and Turbografix 16 are just an oversight? These days just about anyone can make their "Top 10" a hit on digg. Not that there haven't been some good ones, just so many boring ones.
- N1XUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ive actually got the Coleco Vision in the bottom of my cupboard with a copy of Donkey Kong i think.... Might try it out and see if it works!
Hmmm wander if it will be worth much on ebay nowa days... - tikistyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Every system needs a creative name. I don't see how any of these were that bizzare. The writer pretty much just listed all the systems and said they were wierd in no particular order. I supose he would prefer:
Video Game Console 5
Electronic Interactive Media Device 2
Interactive Entertaiment Media Console - yuravian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Wii is fun to say"
doesn't make it less wierd. - TekeeTakShak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That may have been the worst top 10 _______ list ever.
I don't quite understand how Xbox 360 is a "weird" name...or the GameCube...or the Dreamcast (which flows quite well). - Leprenomichaun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Vetrex? Failure.
