- DeadHerring, on 10/12/2007, -6/+332This is absolutely pethetic, I bet every single person involved in that case did not know a thing about games. To paraphrase GamesRader, non gamers are the biggest threat to gaming. They are still allowed to make decisions regarding them despite their ignorance.
- arbiterxero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+307I made a quake2 map of my school back in the day.... it was awesome!
and nobody who played it ever shot anyone.
Ack, too many people are afraid of everything. - DoodleMaster, on 10/12/2007, -10/+207I can see how it would raise suspiciouns, and I could definently see this happening, but I highly doubt that this specific kid wants to takeover school by training on fps school mod thingy...he probably did it because he thought it would be cool to have a familiar building to play the game in....
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+152"It's no different than yelling "Fire!" in a theater or "Bomb!" on a plane. This is not stuff you can ***** around with anymore."
Actually it's completely, totally, utterly different from those examples, you idiot. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+138My son plays CS at his SCHOOL once a month. School sponsored LAN party. They had a custom map contest, with the winner coming in with a MAP TO THE SCHOOL! That was a year ago. They play the map just about every month, yet not one school shooting.
Pathetic. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+115"The Lin family consented to the search, and a hammer was found in the boy’s room, which he used to fix his bed, because it wasn’t in good shape, Chen said. He indicated police seized the hammer as a potential weapon."
wow, that's really really pathetic.
torrents are for sweaty people. - lebe0024, on 10/12/2007, -2/+114I remember a doom 2 map of someone's high school way way way back in the day. It was full of cyber demons, just like every other doom2 custom map!
- FryedGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+101In high school we had a map of one wing of our school that a bunch of us used to play CS on. We even played it at a school sponsored LAN and only stopped when one teacher said people might get the wrong idea from us playing it. Also, my roommate in college designed a map of one of the college dorms for CS but never actually built it (just on paper) and he got taken in by campus police and the local PD. He's the most peaceful kid ever and doesn't even play FPS games, just likes building worlds for other people to play in.
Unfortunately for every thousand or ten thousand people that do something it only takes one psycho ***** to ruin it for the rest of us. - SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+94...
hammer = weapon?
That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It's up there with charging him with suspected "terrorist" activity. - socalrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73I agree with Doodlemaster.
I thought about designing a CS map of my school, and one for the local net cafe that I play at of their building for them, but now its taboo to play CS or any other FPS it seems. Soon its going to be taboo to play pacman because the levels are replicas of corn mazes in Ohio or something. - theciuffo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+75Well come on folks, He's asian, owns a hammer which he may or may not have taken a picture of himself holding, and has an affiliation with a video game. Do I have to spell it out for you? :)
- xBBx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+67A commenter on the site made a very good point:
"Quick ! Call the national guard and have the GTA IV production team arrested ! They used New York in a vido game, they must be terrorists !
While it’s good to see they didn’t take any chances with this case, I wonder if expelling him was really a good choice, we all do stupid things when we’re kids. Plus, we don’t have the full story, like if the people you shoot in the game are other students or faculty, etc…" - popabawa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+66This really is unbelievable. What law do they think he had violated in order to arrest him? It's a fundamental lack of understanding of how and why he'd make such a mod.
It's obscene to think it's possible this has been blown WAY out of proportion because the kid is Asian...
BTW, a slight correction from the article, he wasn't actually charged with anything. Still, poor kid, looks like he's got the shaft for other's shortcomings. - fuzzYogHurt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62And how did he break the law? I think I'm missing something.
- mykos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+60"The Lin family consented to the search, and a hammer was found in the boy’s room, which he used to fix his bed, because it wasn’t in good shape, Chen said. He indicated police seized the hammer as a potential weapon."
Comedy gold! - jonathantneal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53I created a map of my high school here in Fullerton, with no problem. Then, after Columbine, I created a flash animation that had the text of the school 'explode' (eg, I had just been introduce to Flash via Swish, and the explosion sound was the one from old MS Offices). Well, somebody saw it and called the police, thinking that whoever made the offensive animation was going to go ballistic on the school. In the middle of a Spring Musical rehearsal, I was contacted by the police who determined that I posed no threat to the school (maybe because I was white and involved in nearly every type of school activity) and that my animation was in no way threatening, however, I was EXPELLED the next week when the school was apparently notified of the incident. They were escorting me about trying to make sure that all of my belongings were with me before I leaved, and then one administrator stepped in and pretty much single-handedly saved my butt, reversing the decision.
- FRANKeB, on 10/12/2007, -5/+53He is a Chinese Terrorist. We must go to war with China before we have to fight them here. We must prevent all the bludgeoning by hammers on our soil because they want to destroy our freedoms.
/sarcasm - selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50
"Quick ! Call the national guard and have the GTA IV production team arrested ! They used New York in a vido game, they must be terrorists !"
That won't happen until they use Boston... - madcreator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+51@arbiterxero
The proper authorities have been contacted. Expect a knock on your door any minute. - ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45the is absolutely ridiculous. hell back a few years ago my friends and i created a map of our entire college campus for Counter Strike and had almost the whole damn school playing it. I can only imagine how quick some whiny bitch would have us in prison now. WTF is happening to this country?
- pmuaddib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45Where can I get that map?
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44Stories like this make me want to get a gun and a bunch of ammo and shoot everybody.
- Rocketman1882, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39Hell, I got in trouble in the U.S. for trying to make a text based mud of our school that you could walk through for a computer science class. Old people can be silly sometimes.
- umrgregg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Back when I was in school we used to play Sega Lock-On (laser-ish tag) in the halls and rooms after hours. No one thought anything of it. Some of the teachers even joined in to find out what the fuss was all about.
None of us shot up the school. - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -2/+37the next person to post blogspam is seriously going to need the jaws of life to remove my foot from his ass...
here's the story. http://www.fortbendnow.com/news/2847/chinese-community-rallies-behind-student-removed-from-clements-over-pc-game-map
what's worse is that the douchebag blogsite went down so fast.... had to gank the link from duggmirror - blankman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+43Well, everyone on digg used their collective power to cause a huge change yesterday, how about we do it again to save this kid?
- jareducsd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33The article states that this happened in Texas, let's keep an eye on this story. This is my first Digg post too! A little about me:
I am Asian
I am a video game designer
I created FPS maps of my university using the UT editor
I am not a terrorist, I am an American! - swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33School shootings are supposedly caused by violent video games, so creating a school environment within a violent video game could... PREVENT school shootings! After all, these insane video-gamers can not differentiate between video games and reality, so they will probably think that they already shot up the school when in fact they had only played the high-school level in counterstrike! Brilliant!
- phronko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32I remember making a map of my school in the original Doom. Does that make me old?
And like my real school, it was full of giant pink demons. I had a BFG 3000 in my room. You know, to train for the real thing. - c0y0t3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Please turn yourself in as a terrorist immediately.
- bjornski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Exactly! EVERYONE likes to run around a map of an area that's familiar to them! Mapmakers LOVE to make maps of places they KNOW!
Hell. I play Second Life. I build things that look like real things in the world! I guess I better expect to be arrested too! - canvasbagfight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Better start pitching in then, since this happened in Texas.
- violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25"Well, everyone on digg used their collective power to cause a huge change yesterday, how about we do it again to save this kid?"
You can email the superintendent of the FBISD at superintendent@fortbend.k12.tx.us - AgentAce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24I wouldn't exactly say that this was a stupid thing. He just created a map for a game he played based on his school. A few of my friends and I did the same thing several years ago with the Doom2 editor. While in college, a few of my friends made a CS map of Clemson.
People need to stop overreacting and get a life. - bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Netdawg, you and people like you are completely retarded. Screaming fire in a movie theater induces panic, and causes everyone to flee the theater, because shouting fire means your life is in danger. Creating a map in a video game, does not threaten anyone's life, it does not induce panic (except for people with single digit IQ's and no fuhqin clue), nor does it cause people to flee. There is absolutely zero comparison to be made between this person making a map for a game and shouting fire in a theater. Who in the h3ll can you even possibly say that? Where did you critical thinking skills come from?
Do you have any idea how long it takes to create a level like that? How many hours is involved, how much effort it takes? I used to make maps for Quake 1 & 2, it's a very slow process, and is an art form. I used to make maps of my office, my parents house, interesting landscapes, and not once, did we shoot them up.
Get a clue, and please STFU. - jackyyll, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27I bet he shoots up the school because he's so depressed from being expelled.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Hey, come on now. Games have WAY MORE influence on people than you think.
I mean, seriously, try running with a knife. You'll go WAYYYY faster. Oh, wait... - FRANKeB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Without Habeus Corpus, who needs to be charged with anything?
- Bigflexy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19He had committed—would have committed, even if he had never set pen to paper—the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it. - George Orwell, 1984.
- swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21"Digg- Student who creates FPS Map From High School Plans gets Arrested"
splitt3r: "Can you get arrested for making a FPS map of your highschool?"
oxdeltaxo: "No."
lol. morons. - lilmoonee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Here are some pictures of the map. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8082096@N02/?saved=1
- josephlucas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I remember I made a Wolfenstein 3D map of my high school, back when I was in high school and Wolfenstein 3D was still popular. Wasn't exactly perfect though :)
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Jack Thompson just busted in his pants.
- bjornski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17No, it's not, you idiot. Read the article
IT"S TEXAS!!!! - MadRat779, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Its only ok to make maps of your school if your white.
- SpenceMasta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16then you better pay up and take some learning to read courses cause it said this was taking place in texas in the first sentence
- umrgregg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@bjornski:
Making something in Second Life is definitely worse than making it in Counter Strike... People could be having sex instead of shooting things. - SnuKs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Didn't you know? He shoots blanks.
- Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Dude, that was totally last night. No one cares anymore.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Wow I feel bad for anyone who plays the LVU campus of rainbow six and they actually go to LVU. Better yet if the cops flip out for anyone who lives in vegas to play RB6: las vegas.
