- blinkfink182, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Uh, they still look ugly. Why can't they have a default "match Windows color" theme?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I dont think a dedicated server is exactly what he had in mind...
- PolarPyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is the one I use:

- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Steam works flawlessly for me - I've bought quite a few games over it, and can play both at home and in my office, with it auto-updating and allowing me to load-up at both locations on one account.
Infact, I've spent more money buying stuff on Steam than I have in retail, because I hate going to gaming stores, and I absolutely refuse to "pre-order" games from somewhere like EB, or to stand in line. Steam allows me to background download the encrypted game and unlock/play it within 5 min or so of it being released. This I like.
I also like that they are pretty strict with banning cheaters. The only downside that I wish they'd fix is confirming password changes with an email to prevent account takeovers and such. - MHarrison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Looks good, hope they fix the friends list.
- PolarPyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6gtfo -_-
/murder - niteskunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How come I have a feeling that after that one spammer made the front page, a lot more people are going to try? :/
Stay off of digg comments unless you have something meaningful to say. - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Why on earth would that be better than just playing it on a PC? Especially with the cross-platform gamer profile microsoft was talking about (anyone care to elaborate on the details? I don't remember exactly how it was supposed to work other than linking your xbox with your pc and cellphone)
- Boyblundr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10It's called Offline Mode.
You aren't too experienced with Steam, are you?
Also, who doesn't have "always connected" internet now anyway? - flump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5where's my team fortress 2? :(:(
- Zidul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5While they're at it, they should go back to the old weapon pricing in CS.
- InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Valve dropped support for Linux when they dropped all support for OpenGL. You can only run dedicated servers.
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7how in any possible way does steam hinder your gameplay?
you can download the game whenever you want, where ever you want for starters, and if you don't have a decent enough internet connection to connect steam up just once, so you can play the damn things, then...you're a wanker and need to get out of 1995 - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Twice in the last month I've had HL2 Ep1 refuse to run in offline mode on my laptop when I haven't had access to the net, so I agree, it's a pain in the arse and I'd sooner there was an option not to have Steam
- 420666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3update is on January 8th. (monday)
- evilpig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It seems they took the usermade steam skins from here:
http://www.fpsbanana.com/screens?img=http://image.fpsbanana.com/ss/guis/761.jpg - that1jewishguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3steam has a lot of problems that they need to fix before they change their layout such as... getting friends to work or even getting the favorities list to save. steam needs to rethink their priorities
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Heh, I just did the same thing. I wasn't about to buy ep one at $20, but their current special was just too tempting.
I used to hate steam, but its turned into a pretty good way to obtain content. - Boyblundr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ah, let's just hope this doesn't break more games, every time they update it breaks something completely unrelated.
- Daveoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. We'll spend about 5 minutes checking out each new thing, then go pwn some more.
It's not like we have to learn anything new, it's just a tiny bit different. - Farik, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Would be nice to see a Vista Aero skin...
- PunishedOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2*Prays this new update will fix the disappearing favorite server lists*
If not, I could stick to Xfire as well. - Snoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate that DWP system but most server I play in just turn it off.
- InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Tell me about it. I work on a mod team. We spend more team fixing Steam induced problems than working on new code for the mod.
- vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hopefully my store bought Red Orchestra will actually work with the new version of steam.
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@WhyTwoKay
That's because many of the more interesting mods tap into undocumented or poorly supported API. If a mod were to adhere strictly to the supported and, "recommended," API, the mod community would only have one mod of any measure.
Valve bills their API as a sort of bonafide backend that taps into nearly everything available in the game engine, the reality is a lot less impressive. - mrdoolittle119, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea well hopefully the friends list works
- caddoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.fpsbanana.com/guis/989 hmmmm interesting
- Batiu-Drami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1evilpig: Steam's default skin used to be just like the green one from fpsbanana, so I'd imagine that the fpsbanana skins are just a clone/colour change of the old skin. Evidently steam is going back to the older, flat style. I always thought it looked better anyway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To hell with Apple and Macworld.
- Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they look similar, could be be possible that value bought them?
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's easy.
1. Money
2. More Money
3. Counter Strike - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Usually that happens when they release an update for a game (such as Counter Strike: Source). Then the admin plugins (Beetles, Mani, ESTools, etc) break until an update is released, causing servers to crash and such.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2IMO, this isn't really a "major" update...
- Evil-Dragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just replayed HL2 over the last few days (i actually played EP1 first and then HL2 again)
I forgot how challenging it was on Normal difficulty. Anyway, HL2 is anything but i old, i enjoy it every time i play it again. It's the most i can do until EP2 comes out. - sorbix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This doesn't seem that major at all. New interface, background updating, and guest passes?
Where are the bug fixes? - maccam94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hope it doesn't break Cedega (for too long anyway) :-
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1HaloDude1489:
To clarify, I pre-purchased Halflife2 and Halflife 2 Episode 1, and over the course of a few weeks, Steam downloaded all of the encrypted game data files to my local machine. When it was finally released (at midnight in the case of HL2), steam unlocked and decrypted the files and it was ready to play within 5 minutes. Naturally, those purchasing a game after release need to download it all at once (they don't get the benefit of a pre-load), but even still, it's a few hours to download.
I consider this vastly superior to dealing with the pimply-faced-geek at EB, or waiting in a long lineup in the cold outside a store. YMMV. - xCrimsonXx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, hopefully the steam update will fix Counter-Strike: Source server's list fully, and for HL2 Mods.
- friedcalamari, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If I'm not mistaken, there is a way to run a source dedicated server on Linux.
- Enderic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Steam Linux support?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Man, those new skins look alot uglier than the current skin. I hope they have a "Classic" option.
- kevinthegeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hey!
What's this supposed to mean!??!
"those of you still playing Counter-Strike and Half-Life 2 should be looking forward to."
You say it as it's an old, out of date thing! "Still playing CS and Half life"... PFT! 2 Of the best FPS's ever created, of course we should "STILL" be playing them!
I feel offended! - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9@ Boyblundr
You still have to connect at least once to, "validate," your game and not everyone has, "'always connected' Internet...."
Besides, Steam is an unnecessary requirement Valve artificially introduced in order to have some measure of DRM in place so they can cull in three times what they would earn at retail. Valve bills Steam as a Bootstrap when it's really nothing more than, "man in the middle," and distribution software. Don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge Valve wanting to earn more per game, that's their right. However, the artificial requirements that's Steam is just a line of ***** and ***** they feed to gamers. - Halodude1489, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nogami I have no idea of any game that lets you "play in 5 min" other then defcon, try getting HL2 or CSS that takes a night time.
- kayjay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i play dod:s quite often, i dont like ALL other Games available on Steam.
i hope theyll rls dod: classic with InGameAds. - Zips, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"It seems they took the usermade steam skins from here:"
I believe the skins author was part of some small deal to purchase the rights to the skins or somesuch.
