- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'll say it again, blu-ray was a big mistake. If they include blu-ray, it completely guts the sales of all other blu-ray devices. That means the adoption of blu-ray will be completely dependent on the success of the PS3. Other manufacturers will not be able to sell their blu-ray players at a high enough profit to compete with the PS3, which is bad if you're trying to introduce it as an industry standard. There is no incentive for other companies to create blu-ray devices if the PS3 undercuts their sales.
- Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I lost faith in the PS3 a while ago, I dont expect it to be what they said it would be... for that, I'll stick with Nintendo and maybe get a 360... PS3 isnt much interest to me
- doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"So what if it gets pushed back to fall it will be cheaper and wont have as many bugs. And it will have more games."
Whatever helps ypu sleep at night - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just curious...have there been any hands-on previews of PS3 games by any major gaming publication? I haven't found a single one. This more than anything tells me that PS3 gaming is a dream for Christmas at best.
- rudolphdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Alpha and Omega.....what? PS3 IS DELAYED....okay? It may be a kick ass system when...key word when...it is released. But check this, we are all supposed to be collecting on our preorder for PS3's in about two weeks...and I bet you all the 360 games in the world that this biatch isn't going to be playable in North America until 07.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm undigging everyone who isn't making use of the REPLY button. Use the new system or get out.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sounds bogus to me. Consider the source, someone else said that someone else said. I haven't seen a press release from $ony. Has anyone else? Considering that $ony has yet to provide developers with a development kit that they can use has more to do with the PS3 delay. The money is on $ony keeping mum and hoping that memories will forget that PS3 was ever a viable concept in the first place.
- TyRaNNOus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm somewhat business savy so here is my take on the new consoles. PS3 will be pushed back no matter what people say and the fact the no dev kits available means one thing. DELAYED!
X-Box 360's release ahead of PS3 and Nintendo does not mean it's out for the cont like sega was with dreamcast. It could be disasterous for Sony if their console launches at a higher price without the high quality games on release. nintendo has the right idea appealing to the working poor and parents looking for a christmas gift.
If sony fails it could tank the company let's not forget about the emotion chip in the PS2 that promised realistic graphics and physics and failed to deliver and make good on their promise. Sony is already in financial troubles and if PS3 is more then 500$ which i think it probably will be because the company cannot afford to take the loss unlike microsoft for instance. I think nintendo has the right idea of being not only different and unique from it's competitors and cheaper may win these console wars. In the long run I think sony will pull out of the console wars. It would be in most peoples interest in my opinion to invest in either 360 or Rev because Sony won't be around in a couple of years. - LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4you gotta be kidding. "possibility"? whatever happened to clear consise answers? They're making excuses with the drives, and if they think fans won't be upset, they're wrong. The longer it takes the PS3 to come out, the longer it will take "2nd generation PS3 games" will come out, a clear blow to Sony, because XBOX360 will have 2nd gen games only a few months after the PS3's release.
- chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony and the PS3 have been in the headlines for weeks because of the mystery date. If they came out weeks ago and said "Oct. 23rd" that would be it, no more press, no more headlines for the PS3 or blu-Ray, which they also have a vested interest in getting people talking about.
It gets people talking, keeps people talking. I'm sure they didn't want to miss their date but if they are this was the best way for them to handle it -for them. The people that buy a PS3 are still going. - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"you gotta be kidding. "possibility"? whatever happened to clear consise answers? They're making excuses with the drives, and if they think fans won't be upset, they're wrong. Also dont forget since developers will already be on second gen 360 games when PS3 launch titles are hitting they might find themselves prefering the 360 because the installed based is already there, they are just starting to get at real performance with the hardware, something that will take easily twice as long to do on PS3.
The longer this thing is delayed the worse it is for everyone. If they wait too long the RSX which is only a geforce 6800 (which is already behind the 360 GPU by a decent sized margin) they might need to update it, which would further delays, heighten cost, and make developers have to start all their testing again to make sure it all works right resulting in...more delays. - JangoFett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The way Sony's going about the PS3 development has me convinced that this is more about pushing the new Blu-ray format and less about making a gaming console.
It's just speculation, but I imagine the revenue potential for a brand-spanking new DVD format far exceeds the revenue potential for PS3 games. - rudolphdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Point taken from the story....who has an order in for the PS3? WHO!? Nobody, which means that it ain't happening in the Spring...you ain't gonna download a PS3 via windows update while you count sheep.
Spring is a joke, which means summer is going to be skipped because...who releases that close to the holidays...which means back orders at best...which means winter 07. That is nearly a year delay....and am I nuts or did Xbox come out in 05? I remember the REV being a joke while the "big boys" were coming out with 360 and PS3....well REV will be out before PS3
THIS IS ANOTHER NIGHTMARE FOR SONY...... - mtrend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"how can it be DELAYED if there was no realease date?!!!! I don't understand how you people think. You cannot delay something that has never been given a solid date"

Spring is Spring, not Fall... - lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where are you people coming up with the "more time means a better product" thing from?

One thing to say...
VIVA LA REVOLUTION! - adam84a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This seems like what they did last time...
Wait until at least a year after the XBox 360 (or Dreamcast in the case of the PS2) has been released.
That way they can make the early starter in the next generation look like the end of the previous generation, not the beginning of a new one.
I think this makes sense.
I'm actually glad that they're delaying it because if it comes out a full year after the XBox 360, I'll have a solid 12 months to recover from the ridiculous amount of money I paid for my 360. - ti22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is real
It was in the paper today. It will be realesed in November. - BETA7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you know... the smartest thing to do is really just sit back and wait... because it was stupid of me to buy a psp because theres a crapload of rumours of psp2, just like what htey did with the ps2 gen's they'll probably do to the ps3 so i'd personaly give it a year or two before id buy one of those suckers so that they get the technology on it right.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It appears that Sony has set itself up for failure by incorporating Blu-Ray into the PS3. It will get them involved in a massive format war. It will cause the PS3 to be delayed so much that there will be more economical Blu-Ray players on the market by the time it's released. It will also increase the price of the PS3 dramatically.
Then you have to factor in the facts that they're trying to build an on-line system to rival Xbox Live from scratch, they're competing against a hugely popular handheld console from Nintendo, and they will undoubtedly be offering the most expensive console on the market.
I'd be impressed if they could overcome those odds, but I just don't see how that's possible. - SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. Is anybody really all to surprised by this?
and if the reports are true that it costs $800/ea to manufacture the PS3, and they decide on a $500 price point I don't see how the math works in Sony's favour
Consider a potential install base of one million (shooting low of course). That's $300,000,000 in losses in console sales alone. At $30 profit a game the attach rate is going to have to be 10 just to break even.... let alone the lost royalties from people buying the PS3 as opposed to Stand-Alone Blu-Ray players.
I don't care what any fanboy says. the numbers just don't work. Sony's gonna drop something... you just watch. I wouldn't be all to surprised to see them forced back into DVD9 by their shareholders.
Don't forget. Shareholders call the shots at Sony. If they're not happy the board can force Sony's hand.
It's a serious shame they shot so high... Anything bad for Sony is bad for the industry as a whole. - tombomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony's Best chance at survival is to keep coming out with great games for the PS2 and try to maximize the hardware on the PS2. Nintendo did this years ago with the NES and it stayed around for a while after the Next-Gen systems were released. However, I don't know how long Sony can keep people interested in the PS2 and if they can keep the console alive until the PS3 comes out
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm going to buy a PS3 just for the Sony-subsidized blu-ray drive. Boring retreads of 10 year old games (COUGH Metal Gear Solid 4 COUGH)? I could care less. Nintendo and Microsoft are going to be the ones to watch this generation.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"how can it be DELAYED if there was no realease date?!!!! "
WTF are you talking about? they said it was going to be released in "spring", now it'll be "fall".... what don't you understand? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As far as I understand it, nVidia hasn't even shipped any video chips to Sony. They (Sony) realy look like they've fumbled this one.
- RiotActing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's funny that they are blaming the delay on the blu-ray drive when it's more likely the development of the console as a whole... where are the playable games? How about some gameplay video? None of the games are even near completion or we would be hearing about them...
- DiggRadar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The article suggests that if Sony does delay the system, it would put the launch off until after October" --- Hmmm, this seems to be a Japanese article for a Japanese audience. If it doesn't launch until October in Japan, a 2007 launch for much of the rest of the world would not be surprising.
- sporkwitch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4As far as mentioning their software flops, yeah, Sony can't program to save their lives. This is common knowledge, look at EVERYTHING they've made for PCs (Star Wars Galaxies, Matrix Online once they took it over, PlanetSide, Everquest -- the performance, i.e. uber-lag, not the game itself which was revolutionary at the time--.)
Sony's pr-oven that, yes, when it comes to software, they make second-rate, buggy, trash, and basically kill anything they touch, even if it wasn't theirs ***** up at first (look at MxO which they made worse when they took it over).
Their hardware, however, is of pretty good quality. When it comes to brand-name off-the-shelf computers, I'd recommend a Sony over any other for stability and overall quality (unless you're gaming, because Sony only uses Intel processors, which are trash for gaming compared to their AMD counterparts.)
The PSX, after it's initial hiccups with overheating and such, rocked. The PS2, after they fixed the issues with disk read errors, rocked. I predict the same for the PS3, and like some others, I would always rather see a delay than a rush, because we've got enough second-rate trash on the market as it is, some of which had no hope, others that turned out that way for one reason alone: they were rushed.
As far as the revolution, I think Nintendo's success is independent of Sony and M$. The most common second console, if you own one of the three major ones, is a GameCube. Why? Because the games are relatively unique compared to some of the X-Box and PlayStation offerings, and the system and games are less expensive. For the same reason, revolution will do well no matter what. The interface is original and innovative, the games will be good, and it'll all be less expensive.
As far as M$, the X-Box, other than graphics, didn't have much to offer. Overall quality wasn't that great, and performance wasn't much better either (need I mention the loading times on Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind? Or how about the buffer overflows in MechAssault 1?). Exclusives? Maybe a dozen that were worth the disk they were stored on. Extra features? For 30 dollars I can buy a decent stand-alone DVD player that'll offer more features than an X-Box. Only real nice "extra" was the ability to rip music and have custom sound tracks. Online play? If you like paying 50 dollars a year for yahoo voice chat (complete with the inane yammering of 12-year-olds) and playing with a community composed almost exclusively of cheaters, exploiters, and hackers, then hey, whatever floats your boat, right? Not to mention that nearly all X-Box live games or something nearly identical, was available on a PS2 or PC, and you didn't have to pay a fee for it. And what the hell were they thinking with the black and white buttons and no USB keyboard/mouse support?
I can say this much, IF the PS3 ends up sucking, or bombing, or whatever, I'll be leaving the console arena until a new company steps up (though I might pick up a revolution....heh), because honestly, some of the few console games worth playing were on PS2, and the same will probably be true of PS3. Other than that, I'll stick to my PC, at least then I have more control, even if I am forced to pay M$ for their POS-OS if I want to game. - cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BassCadet:
There havn't been "hands on" previews in the normal sense of the phrase. But there have been a few articles, where staff from Game Informer (the only gaming publication I really read) have been invited by a dev company to watch them play through some levels and such. So to answer your question: Sort of. - DS513, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's all wait an extra year to buy a system that will be twice as expensive as all the other next gen systems! Oh, and did I mention it has AACS? Sony, get your act together. (This is coming from a guy who has both a PSX and a PS2.)
- Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe if they delay the release of the PS3 to ensure they have enough to meet demand, they can avoid the completely half-ass worse console launch in history, Xbox 360. Sure I love my 360 but the games are SEVERELY lacking three months out the door... and the console still cannot be found anywhere on the shelves. Perhaps it would have been nice if MS actually had the balls to announce a delay in launch until they could get the product actually to the stores instead of worrying so much about Sony...
- smartpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is anybody surprised by this? Sony bit off way more than they can chew with the PS3. Look at the insanely expensive Blu-Ray drive that isn't even finalized yet, the expensive and extremely difficult to program Cell chip, and the ridiculous number of ports on the PS3 (2 HDMI ports, 3 gigabit ethernet ports, 6 USB 2.0 ports, bluetooth controller, and 3 different memory card readers).
I can't believe how obvious it has been from the beginning that the PS3 will be very late and very expensive. I would be shocked to see it before Christmas. - RobbieCrash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The PS3 is going to ***** Sony in the console race. They're going to pull a Saturn or a dreamcast in this generation.
It's going to be a superior system technically, with a super limited amount of games, and an overly extravagant price point which will drive 90% of buyers away.
The average buyer is not going to spend more than $600 on a console that is going to be totally obsolete within 2 years and unsupported within 4 years.
If reports from developers are to be believed, Nintendo is going to go back to being the market leader this time around, with Microsoft being a close second. Everything I've read about developers takes on making games for any of these systems has said that the Revolution is the most exciting thing they've seen in a long time, and that it's really easy to work with. Next comes the 360, and then in last place with the people who are actually working with prototype hardware, is the PS3. Which has been referred to as nightmarish to work with. - Cowboy5995, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I'll say it again, blu-ray was a big mistake. Well if that be the case I hope they do because it gives HD-DVD a chance to bring their players down because the PS3 will never be out hahahahhah oh wait I am gessing just in time for christmas with as many bugs as any other consoles in history. - muikano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you want to reply to Bass Use the stinking reply button. Whatever i'm just gonna block you.
- Siraris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2First of all, the majority of these comments are ridiculous. Sony is not "dead", Sony also didn't "lie".
But I think the most important thing that people are missing here, is that this is deflecting all media from the 360. The fact that there are barely any games out for it, that there were all sorts of problems with malfunctions at launch, and also the utter shortage of consoles. Microsoft must be jubilant that no one is paying attention to the lacluster launch of their system. - skooma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dugg bcuz gamespot died
- Nizzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm pretty sure that the Nintendo company stated that the system isn't going to be able to compete graphically. And I own a 360 and was quite disappointed in the lack of improvement ( definitely not groundbreaking ) . So if it cant compete with that, than what will we be receiving? A prettier Game cube with a cool controller. I miss the Glory days of the NES myself but Nintendo just isn't a console competitor anymore. They should stick to handholds. okay I guess maybe I am a little bitter about the Zelda delay.
- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's worth the wait..
you ***** 360 fanboys need to chill the ***** out. i can't just see the comments from u guys when it is released, and you see that it is a superior system.. weather sony releases this year or next, it will still do well. a later launch will not effect the future of bluray.because well, there aren't any out now. so if the ps3 is launched the same time as HD movies are starting to get released, then it will mean ++ for sony and ++ for the bloody MPAA - SpeedyG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yay for backpedaling!
"We insist we're coming out on time in at least one market!"
"Well, maybe not." - Salmonax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Released sooner or released later: Sony hardware is still rubbish. Very, very, very popular rubbish.
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You are sadly mistaken L0phtpDK.
Several videos have been released of non "pre-rendered" material. Many gaming publications have seen games in working order. So if you're about done with the stereotypical rebuttals to the PS3, we'll move on.
And riotacting, Sony never said the PS3 would be twice as powerful. They did however say it would be capable of twice as many floating point calculations. The whole "twice as powerful" thing came from the Sony bandwagon of fans. - rudolphdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah there is no way I am paying this much IF it is that many years out before devs have it optimized....that much money goes to a fully functional PC, not a console. I think the REV is going to be the winner in the next few years...and yes I hope it is too.
- phuqju, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0regardless of price and of release date, the ps3 will out shine the 360.
but as for me! i can't wait for the revolution!! - AJ41581, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Digg Effect! LOL Thats abosultely awesome, Digg killed gamespot! :D
- RiotActing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sony defiantly lied when they said the PS3 was going to be twice as powerful as the 360...
- L0phtpDK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*** To Sony:
Lets be honest here, the chips are not in your favor: Most of you developmental partners have already admitted to it, you don't have your standards set, you haven't released anything non-prerendered (debated), and you're employees are growing irritable (to be expected). We already know its going to be late, and you know what, we honestly do not care. It's going to a beast release it, we understand that. You have a magnitude of new technology in this machine that, honestly, would be a miracle if you got it work... period.
So, **STOP** pissing off us developers and especially your customers. And do what you know is right: Admit to the adjusted (late) schedule at E3 this year. Becuase we would rather have a late product then a bad product.
- Everyone and their mothers - kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'm glad they have the courage to admit there's a problem."
OK Dr.Phil - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2problems with blu-ray, problems with CELL whats the difference right?
- Nizzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know I would have to agree. And the system is going to be delayed. I read an official report of a November release. And Ive heard about all the power and stuff included with the system. What do you think they'll do to the price. Sony's future is hanging on the PS3 and their blue ray discs. And I tell ya for the extra money the screens Ive seen don't seem to be any more ground breaking than the 360. We could be seeing the end of Sony. The Blue ray doesn't seem to be worth all of the trouble. Especially if companies go with the cheaper HD DVD.
