- BrapAllgood, on 02/09/2008, -5/+75"Meier claims it’s “all the best parts of Civilization” without the micro management of hard core strategy games."
Lost my interest right there. I'll stick with the Civ Suite I already own. :) No other game series has ever taken so much time from me and the micro-management *is* the fun. For me. - rishubhav, on 02/09/2008, -2/+46Why is there not a single mainstream strategy/simulation franchise that has resisted the urge to dumb down?
- Aharoni, on 02/09/2008, -2/+44Blogspam of the worst kind
http://www.gamersglobal.com/special/interview/sid- ... - islingt0ner, on 02/09/2008, -9/+46Sid Meier could touch dog poop and make it into the most addictive RTS.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+36Agreed! Losing the "micromanagement" would just piss me off. My favorite part of Civ is the nation-building and defense, not the battles.
- JulyZerg, on 02/09/2008, -0/+20Yeah, except for the fact that he hasn't ever made an RTS!
- xirtap, on 02/09/2008, -2/+20Go back to making another Civ, Meier. I want something even more complex and huge which I can micromanage. Civ 4 isn't enough!
- Zoids, on 02/09/2008, -2/+16I'm guessing you are a member of the PC gaming master race?
- Edrick, on 02/09/2008, -0/+12Honestly, how dense can you guys be? What thought process lead you to the conclusion that Civilization Revolution = the end of the franchise? It's just a streamlined, simplified Civilization game for the consoles, not Civ 5. Geesh.
- DuxDucis, on 02/09/2008, -0/+11I'm stil waiting for Alpha Centauri 2.
- LightPhoenix, on 02/09/2008, -1/+12The fundamental problem with bringing Civilization as is to consoles is the lack of a good, or even decent interface. Can you imagine playing Civ 4 with nothing but a controller? I certainly can't - the keyboard is nigh essential to me, despite the fact that you can do everything with the mouse. In order to accomodate the simpler input scheme, the gameplay needs to be made less complex. Assuming that everyone will buy a keyboard to play the game is not a good assumption from a design standpoint.
Leaving that aside though, here's a strange thought - not everyone has the same tastes as you. There are people that can't sit around for hours playing a game, and for that short time they have to play, they don't want to think, they want to relax. A highly in depth game like Civ certainly doesn't fit that criteria. Heck, most people I know get sucked into playing it for much to long. When you have a limited amount of time to play, and you know the game will drag you in, people tend not to play that game and go with something less involved.
Of course, we haven't even seen the game yet, so crying about perceived slights is premature, to say the least. I'd find it highly ironic if you actually played the game and liked it. - BlazinEurasian, on 02/09/2008, -1/+12I've been playing civilization, and sid meier games since I was 5. Civilization 1 was unbelievably fun, 2 was such a huge improvement, 3 was a smaller improvement and 4 felt like it had been turned mainstream, but was still very, very good. 5 seems questionable right now, but Sid has never failed to deliver so my hopes are still high.
- AydenV2, on 02/09/2008, -3/+13For the record, when he is talking about removing Micro-management, he is really only referring to small things. Workers for example, are removed from the game. Land is automatically upgraded when you harvest it (same with ocean/river tiles). I like being able to build improvements wherever I wanted, but I wont miss it enough to warrant a disaproval of Revolution.
- somestranger26, on 02/09/2008, -0/+9"Meier also discusses the possibility of a Civilization MMO as a future project." Interesting... I wonder what that would be like.
- ScottMitchell, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7I don't think it's the CPU, but the input devices. It's a lot more tedious and time-consuming to click through a lot of screens and check and update various options with a game controller than with a mouse.
- 3tcp, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7As someone who has also played every version since elementary school I can say you're right on. 3 gets a bad rap though, nation boarders were a huge addition, the worst part about 1 and 2 was that you'd build up a seemingly cohesive nation then some jackass would come and drop a city right in the middle of it because you put some a space or two between your cities to get some resource in their boarders.
- smurfsahoy, on 02/10/2008, -2/+9It's not a master/subject thing. It's more of a normal people/mutant troll thing. We don't want to tell the console playters what to do. We just pity them. Like a child with a club foot trying to run away from a bear.
- chicken101, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7Generally speaking games keep getting easier and easier. I remember back in the day with my snes, most of those games were harder than anything you'd find today. Also, for a new player who has never played civilization before it might be a daunting task to learn the game, companies prefer games that are easy for people to pick up and play.
- Emperial, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6You are a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you.
- thebellmaster1x, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6To be honest, I've never played any Civ games, but Alpha Centauri remains one of my all-time favorites.
- spoonyinc, on 02/09/2008, -2/+8You mean theres going to be a Civ game that won't come out on the PC? I'm not a PC or Console elitist either way, but c'mon! It seems like every time a game is taken from focusing on the PC market to the console market it is incredibly dumbed down. Oblivion was a *great* game, but it was dumbed down in order to work well with the Xbox360 (Menus, dialogue, etc.) Mods on the PC really saved it, though. A huge amount of the replay value and enjoyment of Civ games has been the large modding community that's sprung up around them. This is a slap in the face to them unless it is released on the PC eventually.
- americangoy, on 02/09/2008, -10/+16In short, its a dumbed down civilization for idiots. Idiots aka console players.
- Prokaryote, on 02/10/2008, -1/+6It's.
- lex0nyc, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5I think he's acting like Roberta Williams was with Kings Quest. The fun of the original games was the text adventure aspect. Once they added the mouse interface and made it less complex to play, the series went to hell.
- onestarleft, on 02/10/2008, -0/+5I agree with your agreement. The battles even started to annoy me at some point, because they slowed down the building of the empires.
- Coffeedemon, on 02/09/2008, -1/+6I'm sure if anyone can make a version of Civ that removes a major aspect like the micromanagement and still have it maintain the spirit of the series its him. I'd only be worried if the dropped the "Sid Meier's..." from the title.
- 13tongimp, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5This is a link to a link....blogspam
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5Dude is a genius.
- wilf_brim, on 02/10/2008, -0/+4For the record, Sid makes TBS (turn based strategy) games.
- 3tcp, on 02/09/2008, -0/+414 year olds on digg?
Go download Civ 1 and Civ 2 sonny boy. You're still a rookie if you haven't owned the world with chariots that look like wood-burning stoves or seen the live-action advisors bitch at each other. - blocguy, on 02/09/2008, -1/+5StarCraft?
- whaleplushie, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4I like how eloquent Grey Wolf the Barbarian is: "you've captured my favorite village. this village is skilled in horsemanship, but i've many others."
- 3tcp, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3How about new versions of Alpha Centauri and Colonization? The new Pirates! game was a success and I think Civilization is mainstream enough now that people would enjoy a different game with a similar flavor of gameplay.
Think of all the innovative ideas they could try with the social engineering, native species and advanced technologies aspects of AC or the rebel sentiment, founding fathers, religious unrest, trade and native diplomacy aspects of Colonization. The only thing left for Civ to do is expand into new markets... I'm not really interested in that but I'd be happy to spend more money on reiterations of other Sid Meier games. - wetard57, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3xbox 360, ps3 and DS but later for Wii but i remember playing the original civilization on the SNES
- gummih, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Ahh, yes - Civ 1, good times - which reminds me, what the hell happened to Adlib?
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 02/09/2008, -3/+6The best way to ruin Civilization: Turn it into a RTS. I fear that's what would happen with a console port. Dumb it down, RTS it, and gear it for 12 year olds with fast reflexes.
- TanketyTank, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3What about the Total War Series? They have gotten harder and much more complicated as time goes by. To me, nothing is better then playing Rome: Total War with the realism mod for hours.
- aladrin, on 02/10/2008, -0/+3Civ 1 is still the best to me. Maybe I'm getting old. :(
Get off my lawn! ... Nah, doesn't feel right yet. Close, though. - Coffeedemon, on 02/10/2008, -0/+3Madness! Civ 2 is one of the greatest games ever committed to storage media.
- Lazydriver, on 02/09/2008, -3/+6He's removing workers and farms?!
But... I like making tile farm factories!!! D: I first fell in love with this game series in 2003, Civ III, and I was TEN years old. Civ IV's even better cause they got rid of that annoying son of a bitch they call pollution. Still though, this is probably gonna be another SimCity Societies - what's worse though, is that the creator himself actually sponsors it. I want my Civ MMO though!!!! That's the way to go for multiplayer Civ, constant real time servers similiar to the game Artifact! - Xiol, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3Goddamn YES.
SMAC, like smack, was incredibly addictive.
Oh screw you DuxDucis. *installs it again* - perogi21, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2So, much like the Star Trek movies, only the odd ones are worth playing?
- BearinG, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2FYI.. Civ4 has 2 expansions already.. You might have them already though
- gummih, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2you should pick up a copy of Civ 4 then.
- BrapAllgood, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2Dammit. Now I absolutely have to play Civ today. Ow, ow, ow, my arm. :)
- darkphenox, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2Its not an RTS, its a 4X, which most of the time is turn based strategy, like this game.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2I liked each new Civ better than the first. But there were always things about the previous version I liked and wished that they kept.
The most annoying thing in Civ I? Battleship attacks a city defended by a bunch of guys with spears, Battleship sinks. - hierophantus, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2No idea, since it's *Syd* Barrett.
- MioTheGreat, on 02/09/2008, -1/+3I hope he's not doing to Civilization what they did to Sim City.....
- SabrinaHeaven, on 02/09/2008, -1/+3"Meier claims it’s 'all the best parts of Civilization' without the micro management of hard core strategy games."
That's all I needed to know. Civilization Revolution is going to be terrible...and will probably outsell all other entries in the franchise. -
