- Moonkeeper, on 07/16/2009, -1/+191No, they shouldn't. Right of First Sale.
- Janinco, on 07/16/2009, -1/+134No
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -4/+76If you bought a house and the sales agent got a commission on it, would he/she be entitled to another commission if the owners sell that house 20 years later? Hell no.
Hey didnt Garth Brooks bitch like a baby in front of Congress in the mid 90s about this? - sandymac, on 07/16/2009, -1/+58No they shouldn't get a cut when someone else sells their copy. But they should realize that as more used copies get on the market that they can capture those sales by reducing the new price to remain competitive. I'll always buy new over used if there isn't a significant price difference.
- michaelje0, on 07/16/2009, -2/+59Should I get a cut of the profits if the kitchen table that I sold in a yard sale gets sold a year later in another yard sale?
- oldhick, on 07/16/2009, -1/+47"You don’t have to be an economist or some kind of market analyst to realise this is a completely ridiculous statement." , so very true.
- bootie, on 07/17/2009, -0/+42Do car manufacturers get a cut of the used car market??? NOPE!
- Murrabbit, on 07/16/2009, -0/+36Should Ikea get a cut when I get rid of my dorm furniture in a garage sale? No, I don't think so.
- Chewie67, on 07/17/2009, -0/+34Does Best Buy get a cut when I sell my old DVD player on eBay?
Does Warner Brothers get a cut when I sell my old Batman DVD?
They might want a piece, but that's not how the law works. - 7m7uf, on 07/16/2009, -1/+23No, but i do understand. However they can combat this by making the game excel, and think about re-playability. It won't stop it completely but it should slow down reselling longer then a crappy game who came out 2 days ago and Game X-Change already has 2 copies (I don't know if Game x-change is a local thing or not -- they're pretty good about trade-in values i hear)
HOWEVER -- GameStop needs to stop trying to sell used over new. I tried to buy a new copy of Bio-Shock and they kept trying to sell me the used copy. - deweyhewson, on 07/17/2009, -1/+23Short answer? No!
Long answer? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! - lordmike, on 07/17/2009, -1/+22Common sense says no, but copyright law and common sense do not play well together... if public libraries were invented today, the book manufacturers would demand royalties from them for stocking their books... and they'd probably get it, since congress (both Republicans AND Democrats) is bought and paid for by the entertainment industry... Quite frankly, considering the state of intellectual property laws today, I'm surprised that stores are legally allowed to sell used games at all.
- JRowe3388, on 07/17/2009, -1/+21Bad analogy. That would be like Wal-Mart getting money if you sold a game you bought there.
No, I think a better analogy would be paying the crew who built it every time the house was sold to someone else. - sporkman, on 07/17/2009, -1/+20This is exactly what the law of supply and demand dictates.
- preppypoof, on 07/16/2009, -0/+18We can come up with endless analogies as to why the answer should be "no", but it's simpler to just say that if developers don't want their games to be sold as used, then they should make better games so that people don't want to trade them in so quickly.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -1/+17Giving the developers a cut would just drive the price up more.
- sathias, on 07/17/2009, -1/+16Buying second-hand is technically a lost sale, therefore buying second-hand software should be prosecuted the same as piracy.
/s - marcb83, on 07/17/2009, -1/+16then they should develop games with a ton of replay value and a great on-line multiplayer experience.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -2/+17Depends, will they let us ***** their wives?
- Zarokima, on 07/16/2009, -2/+16They're even bad about returned systems. I bought a new DS Lite from them after my old one kicked the bucket and got the second-to-last black and red one (they were the only place with that color in stock), and the bottom screen showed white as tan. I went to return it and they refused, saying I must have modded it. They only gave in when I got my uncle (a fire investigator with arrest authority, also with the FBI, ATF, and Homeland Security due to being a bomb dog handler) to go there in uniform, finally getting a working blank and red DS Lite.
Gamestop can eat all the dicks. - socivitus, on 07/16/2009, -1/+15If GameStop didn't keep trying to sell you used games, they'd go out of business. They're not making anything off the new games. They train their employees to ruthlessly push those down your throat because they make 100% profit from each used game.
- AgentRoyIV, on 07/17/2009, -0/+14Not entirely... The well put version would go something like:
Should I get a cut of the profits if the kitchen table I built and sold gets sold a year later in a yard sale? - rednaxela825, on 07/17/2009, -0/+14If I sell all of my video games at a yard sale should the developer get a cut of that?
- takeodrizzt, on 07/16/2009, -1/+14And the employees try hard because they can actually get fired for not selling enough used games, magazine subscriptions, and edge cards... makes me kinda sick to think about. Also, they will only let you return a game if you buy it used. If you bought new and the game sucks, then you are out the money.
- NeoTechni, on 07/17/2009, -1/+14If they want a cut, they should become the retailer
- DaviDTC, on 07/17/2009, -1/+13No *****? They are talking me selling a game to you and them getting a portion of the sales just cause they were the ones who made it. Of course they should get the money if they buy back and resell the game, but that isn't what they are talking about.
- xmod3, on 07/17/2009, -0/+11
I have some used mp3's I want to sell. - JROXZ, on 07/17/2009, -0/+11Oooooooooooooooooooo Hell Nah!!!
- Will Smith - 7m7uf, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10Lower the price on their used games -- make it more of an attractive offer then maybe the $5 - $10 I'll save over new.
- kent1146, on 07/17/2009, -2/+12You have a choice. If you don't like the terms offered by another party, then excercise your power of choice. Don't bitch and whine about it like a little girl.
You are not forced to buy/sell used games from Gamestop, or EBGames, or Blockbuster, or any single party. If you'd rather keep more of the money in your own pocket for your used games, then sell the games on eBay or Craigslist or to a friend by word-of-mouth. - 13att13, on 07/17/2009, -0/+9As a game developer, I say please trade in your used games. The better majority of used game trade-ins go straight towards new game purchases. I don't know why everyone's up in arms about this. Take away used game trade-in and you take away a lot of new game sales.
- NYConcepts, on 07/17/2009, -0/+9No, but ***** Gamestop too.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8Absolutely not.
- socivitus, on 07/16/2009, -1/+9Well put sir!
- AlienMushroom, on 07/17/2009, -1/+9No.
- Khast, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8I only bought used games at Gamestop...having said this, I only bought used games that were from older consoles.....since they stopped carrying anything older than the GBA... I stopped going there. I have found many other cool used game places that actually sell games from the Atari 2600 up to the PS3. More selection = More money out of me.... of course, I will play older games because most hold a greater challenge than most new games.
- maxsunset, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8Same here. It pissed me off to no end when I recently went in to buy Punch Out and the gamestop employee kept trying to sell me the used version, which was only $5 less than a brand new copy. "But it IS a brand new copy, you'll save $5! It was the managers copy, he didnt even play it!"
I told them I would rather support publisher than gamestop... - nmanguy, on 07/17/2009, -2/+9Used games only exist for the consoles, since no one takes back PC games, so who cares. We're all going to get games on Steam.
- nextekcarl, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7They don't sell them games, they pay them for the shelf space. Look it up. Book stores tend to work the same way. There's a reason every store like this sells the same titles. Publishing doesn't work the way most people think it does, because it isn't handled the way almost any other good is handled.
- Moralogic, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7***** no, they already cost too much. When I see a used game that's packaging is torn to hell and it only cost $5 less at gamestop than new from Target, there is something wrong. Used games are beyond over priced right now unless you buy them on eBay or other such sites.
- sageerrant, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7That's what emulators are for!
No, seriously. For as much as people rail against 'teh illegal romz' and piracy, they're the only reason we still have access to old titles, with the exception of the Wii's Virtual Console. I understand fully that it's almost always an infringement of copyright, but every game will be abandoned some day. The people uploading ISOs right now are ensuring that they'll be around long past the point that they can be bought. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7This is no different than buying a used book.
- sageerrant, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7Best ways to encourage the ex-consumer to learn how to crack a game and set up a private server.
- uncleosbert, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7what does that have to do with developers?
- Sabin, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6I usually tell them I refuse to pay more than 75% of the new price for a used game and that shuts them up pretty quickly. $5 off a game that costs $69.99 is bloody ***** ridiculous.
- Tantrum, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7No they shouldn't, they should reduce the price of the NEW game as it ages so that the cost diff between new and used isn't significant enough for people to buy a used copy.
- sardiax, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6"Secret of Mana was a fantastic Super Nintendo game which might still have some 'collectible' value if not for the extremely dated looking graphics."
You're saying it doesn't have collectible value because it has extremely dated looking graphics?
I'm not sure why you'd say that. I am going to posit that the graphcis don't matter and it does have collectible value.
I mean if anybody cares to disagree, and has a copy. I'll pay $5 for you to ship it to me so I can take it off your hands. - djdingo, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7With games starting to come out as digital downloads, video game companies will no longer need to worry about this.
Problem I see with digital downloads is about people who collect games. If I looked hard enough I could find and buy an Atari 2600 in it's original packaging and if it was kept in good condition I could play games on it. That system came out over 30 years ago. What's going to happen in the future when someone wants to pick up a game that's a digital download? What if that company goes out of business? Too many questions to answer. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -3/+9That's a reasnoable argument.
- sageerrant, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6Of course. But they should be nearly as concerned about it. They absolutely cannot respond to it in the same way they do to piracy, but they're trying all sorts of crazy schemes to prevent it. That's the real reason for DRM at this point.
Alternatively, they could just test making games cheaper until they hit the sweet spot that makes a game worth buying, but not reselling, while still making a profit. -
