- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+215"...looks blocky, seriously lacks detail and has bad lighting."
I take it you've never been inside an American public school? - glxyjones, on 10/12/2007, -4/+206So if I make an exact replica of the White House in CS, does that mean I plan on assassinating the President?
Talk about over-reaction. If the kid was an outgoing football player, he would never have been arrested. People now think that if you're quiet, you're a threat. I'm sure a psychological exam would show if this kid is anything like the killer at V-Tech or the killers of Columbine.
Quiet + Shy != homicidal maniac - Kevinb1577, on 10/12/2007, -0/+160most confusing title ever award goes to this story!!!
but i like the map, its really well done, i hope this kid dosent get in huge trouble, and makes something of his talent - N00F, on 10/12/2007, -1/+110Back in the day, lunch time at our place of employment was spent shooting the hell out of each other, playing Duke Nukem 3D. It was a riot. We would download user made maps and have even more fun. While we weren't willing to put the time into the project, we all really wished we had a representation of our work place so we could laugh at each other as we blew the hell out of each other, while standing on our desk, hiding in the can or just running down the hallways.
I see nothing wrong with wanting a map of your school. The kid spends a lot of time with his friends there. Why not incorporate one of his favorite games with a familiar surrounding and share that with his friends?
Man the media sucks out loud, blowing things out of proportions. Not EVERYBODY is a homicidal sociopath!!
With that said, the kid did an awesome job on the map! - LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -8/+90not a bad school. i'd shoot out the windows into the court yard..... in the game of course.
- lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+82more like, confusing title most ever awarded this story!
- ElvenBlaze, on 10/12/2007, -7/+83These maps are amazingly well done.
- Idgit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+74I literally live down the street from Clements and can easily see Fort Bend ISD overreacting over something like this. It also does not help that the local tv channels are sensationalizing the news.

Expelling a SENIOR mere weeks before graduation for making a map is the very definition of overreacting. - j4son, on 10/12/2007, -0/+70Wow, what a disturbed child. Just look at those textures....
- Snoochy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+64The replica maps for the Titanic and Colbert Report studios were more impressive..
Wait a minute, I think someone might be planning on assassinating Stephen Colbert! and John Jacob Astor! - dosle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51He needs to tighten up the graphics in level three.
- ipodsweatshop, on 10/12/2007, -6/+56No, it's:
quiet + shy + ASIAN = homicidal maniac
Don't you watch the news? It's really important that he's Asian, a regular quiet and shy person isn't homicidal automatically, they still get the benefit of the doubt. Unless you're from India, that would automatically make you a terrorist because Americans don't know geography well enough to discriminate and profile people properly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47Here is the name and email of the school principal.
I sent him an email letting him know just how stupid this action is. Does anyone else on Digg want to stand up for this kid?
Moran, Kevin
Kevin.Moran@fortbend.k12.tx.us - mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Yes, way better than the map I made of my school in Doom over 10 years ago when I was a freshman/sophomore in HS. I stopped working on it because no easy way to have stacked floors without the use of teleporters to fake it.
I had no idea that creativity was a crime, but of course the idea of a school shooting wasn't anything to be concerned about back in 94. - stopple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37if there is any karma in this world, this kid will get a job offer from a reputable game shop
- bales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37This kid gets punished, then the terrorists have won....
- ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32In our CS project last year, we built a to scale map of campus based off of unreal tournament.
(However, we used snowballs as the only weapon instead of rocket launchers, so we were okay.) - bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30OK, so you are a professional mapper, and this kid, is well, a high school student doing this on his spare time. Cut him some slack. Geez.

Dear Mr. Kevin Moran:
Hello, my name is Gordon.
I am writing to you about the situation with a student who created a virtual replica of your school using a popular free software.
Now from what I understand, there is a speculation that this person may have been planning some kind of Columbine like event. That the fact he used a free software that is also used by professional video game programmers to model the school has lead some to believe that he was doing so to create a virtual world to plan some kind of attack on the school.
I can tell you sir that this assumption is highly inaccurate. The reason why the student used the software was probably because it was:
1) Free
2) Well Documented for Developers
3) Had free open support
4) Is VERY popular with the computing world right now.
As a programmer myself, I started doing projects like this in high school. I used free software available from video game distributions. Why? Because I couldn't afford the $5000 software that big corporations used.
I would like for you to visit the following links:

Graphics of the maps.
To me, it's apparently obvious that the designer of this map is still learning how to use this software. It looks more like he/she is more concerned with textural accuracy then an exciting "shoot em up" type experience.
To be honest though, I'd like to hear from you about the situation.
I hope that people come to their senses and realize that the fact that companies use the same software to develop first person shooter games does not in any way mean the student is homicidal.
I look forward to your reply.
-Sincerely,
Gordon - trer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22The funny thing is, I haven't seen anywhere in the story that this kid intended to use the map for planning a school rampage. Just because he USED a FPS game to design the game doesn't mean he was going to do anything more than walk through the virtual school admiring his virtual work. In any case, I don't see many non-FPS games that can create quite the virtual world that a half-life or counterstrike (etc. etc.) can.
This is just a case of people's sheer ignorance about technology. (ZOMG he created a map on a game, it MUST be for killing!) - thewaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24@N00F:
I used to work in a renovated power plant turned architect firm, they played Q3 every day at 4, and i made a map of the place for them. - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F48893HJ

- buba447, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I made a map of my High School in UT when i was a senior. I even put it on the school server. My friends and i would frag each other during slow periods.
But that was a few years ago. I never really made the connection between it and school shootings until now. How strange. - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I downloaded it. It looks real, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Here's the readme:
Made by TheKidWhoGotExpelled
==================================
DESCRIPTION:
A map of the commons area of Clements High School. Why not the whole school? Because the freaking Half-Life 1 engine can't handle it. Don't believe me? Then you go make a map of the whole school for HL1. But yeah, that's basically what it is. And the reason why the floor is not the tiles is because the red carpet looked better. Don't agree? screw you.
NOTES:
- Missing some details because it would've been too much for the engine to handle =(
- Some parts of the school don't look EXACTLY like what it really looks like... Am I getting paid to make this map? No...
- There are leaks in the walls because I wasn't able to test it out fully due to the fact that if I compiled it to test it out, it would've taken days...
- Other very minor bugs that won't affact gameplay at all (maybe not even worth mentioning, but oh well...)
- Different gameplay versions of this map along with BOT files will be released eventually
- That's all for now
>>>>>IMPORTANT!!: One of the CT spawn points is 'stuck', so if you spawn there, just suicide or camp.. sorry... =(
--> This is only a BETA version, meaning a newer, better version will be released sometime in the future with all "bug" fixes
CREDITS:
- TheKidWhoGotExpelled - I made the freaking map including some of the textures also
- SomeGuy - let me use his super fast computer to compile my map
Enjoy! =)
also enjoy Coca-Cola - qwertydvorak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20would be better with comparison shots of the same areas IRL
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19It doesn't matter what he was planning to do with it. They confiscated a HAMMER from his home. A freakin' hammer. What's next, confiscating screwdrivers and kitchen cutlery because a kid makes a Quake map of his neighborhood?
Knee-jerk reactionism is always the easiest and makes you look busy and actively pursuing a goal, which in this case is preventing Columbine and VT-type school shootings. However, nobody seems to really *get* why these kids blow up and go nuts. I guess it's difficult to analyze after it happens since they always suicide at the end, but if all of their peers would quit lying, I'm sure you would see alot of abuse and rejection happening in these kids' lives before they even started planning. Nobody wants to tell an NBC reporter "I used to give that kid lemonade swirlies once a week lol". - meshman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23I don't get it. The title is the most confusing thing I've ever read. What are the pics all about? There's absolutely nothing here to describe... anything. wtf is it?
- dhodge1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20@m4szyman
Of course you were an official cs mapper...coincidentally, my interwebs friends know me as a powerful Sith lord...I also invented the internet...
But you can call me Al.
It's easy to be things on the interwebs! - brklynmark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Kevin Moran?
http://z.about.com/d/politicalhumor/1/0/f/f/get_a_brain_morans.jpg - jkizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18 i think this is the map, i found someone claiming this is it on gamspot. He said the textures might not all be there though. I havnt tested it though, not enough time, if anyone tries it let me know if its a good link or just crap.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F48893HJ - Bega, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Seriously, and amazingly accurate too, all down to the lighting behind the stairwell. (yes, that was my high school). Brings back memories.
edit: @m4szyman,
It's cs1.6 what do you expect? either way, it IS accurate. - unabonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I just don't get why he/she was arrested for making this... It's just a map for a game... Would I get arrested over making a map of my local library? local McDonald's? The office in which I work? All are feasible settings for a game map...
- Frequency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Why doesn't the school get him on the path to being an architect instead of punishing him for being creative?
- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17RoosterJM, Do you have a clue as to what you are talking about? Bad timing? Do you have any idea how long it takes to make a map like this. There is no way he started that after the VT shooting. If he did, he needs to be hired for BIG money, cuz that boy has super mad skillz.
Making a map that big takes over a month to build. - ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16These are screenshots of a Counter Strike map that a student made of his high school. It was on Digg a little while ago.
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/student-arrested-for-making-a-map-of-his-school? - zupzupper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18@m4szyman
You were in the other thread on this yesterday talking about your mad skillz too only yesterday you said you had a single map in a CS beta.
Some of us HAVE been playing CS since beta3 so whats this map you keep harping on that's sooo 1337 that this kids' map pales in comparison? - danlovejoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12This would have been a lot easier when I was in high school:
"You are standing in an open field west of a large high school. There is a small mailbox here." - Cratin24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Ummmm.....I went to Clements...and the thing that blew my mind is that I can see the table I ate at everyday in the courtyard on that map...CRAZY!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16@roosterim
Not bad timing..he made those maps way before the Vtech shootings.
It's just racism. - Slagged, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1120,000 or so emails should be about right.
- JonLatane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I hope this map gets distributed, and becomes the most-played map on every CS server.
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11me fail english? thats unpossible
- BigDane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11pretty freaking sweet.... it makes it more personalized :)
- neodorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10My first Doom maps back in the day were of our high school floor plan and I was never even in a fistfight, much less a bloody rampage.
Talk about overreaction. - revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"And my mom said I'd never get ANYWHERE playing video games!"
- Echuta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9At least he didn't make a replica in The Sims...he could have been planning to build walls around people and watch them soil themselves until they died.
- maxpower69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This guy is getting arrested and google is having a competition. http://contest.sketchup.com/entry.php?rules=1
Makes no sense to me. - glxyjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If you wanted to make a map in CS, wouldn't it make sense to do it based on a building you spend most of your day in? The kid probably saw it as a challenge and took it on, and he did an amazing job. A link to the screen shots of a map some kid with obvious talent made is great, but the injustice hear is the bigger headline.
More attention should be brought to this poor kid being arrested, simply for being talented and imaginative....and that title is not helping. Wow, horrible. -
