- evanstapler, on 12/02/2007, -3/+323You know it's bad when "jeff gertsman", a misspelling of jeff gerstmann, is a popular forum tag.
What's even worse is that "credability" is a popular forum tag, when it's spelled credibility. - tymme, on 12/02/2007, -1/+165Let's boycott CNet and Gamespot... by writing on their forums! (...and every other tech site!) That'll really suck for them, yeah!
- megarobotguy, on 12/02/2007, -9/+150What more can you expect from 12 yr olds.
- Waskonator, on 12/02/2007, -2/+107I love ***** topics
- KingBunny, on 12/02/2007, -0/+86"I can't understand why sites that review videogames would let videogames be advertise on their sites at all."
Yes, they should advertise washing machines. That's where the money's at, for a video game site. - jockser, on 12/02/2007, -2/+70This topic isn't credable..
- diggdeep, on 12/02/2007, -1/+67This is actually a fairly watershed moment in the game industry's creativity cycle. I'm an industry outsider, but a close follower. And I've been conscious for years of the suspicion and skepticism with which the average game review is viewed. Sometimes I dismiss such skepticism as sour grapes, but in this industry, it has seemed reasonable for a while.
In fact, even here on Digg, we've seen a number of pretty compelling stories about game review corruption dugg up over the last year. If anybody diggs this up I'll take the time to go back and find examples.
Anyway: Now, we have a very personal story of an apparently credible reviewer suffering professionally due to "creative" differences with a paid advertiser at Gamespot.
I tried to explain to my girlfriend this morning what a big deal this could be. In many industries, the critics and reviewers have marginal influence, but in gaming I think it's significant. Within the realm of entertainment, objectivity and independence among critics is practically never "skinned" with a given album/title/[whatever]'s brand.. In other words, the latest U2 album might get a ***** review, but rarely is U2's album being shilled exclusively in the margins of that page.
But in the gaming industry, that isn't the case. Bill Harris @ Dubious Quality was wise to compare it to the Wall Street scandal of a few years ago, when investment bankers (who drove mergers and acquisitions) were working hand-in-hand with equity analysts (who rated the viability of the same deals their investment banker peers were brokering). The point is that the quality of the output of a given industry is diluted when supposedly "independent" interests privately align with each other. When the rank-and-file employees of a given "independent" organization begin to cry foul, it is a clear sign of corruption.
Anyway, my hope is that the game journalism industry is shaken up--but more than that, I hope that the developers with integrity again are rewarded for their originality, talent, and vision. Ideally, the beauty of all art would be self-evident; but the reality is that journalists and critics are necessary to interpret the value of most good work. And in the current culture and business environment, it is very commercially challenging to reward the talented artists for their labors.
I am glad that this story is getting a lot of attention. To me, it really doesn't matter if Jeff's termination is 100% true as it has been told on blogs so far. The industry needs a public reaction to the hypocrisy of the current model. - elementfire, on 12/02/2007, -0/+58Welcome to the internetz. This is where everyone thinks what you think, except faster.
- shyner, on 12/02/2007, -0/+53woah. PS3? It's worse than I thought.
- AdonalFoyle, on 12/02/2007, -3/+50how many times can people misspell "credibility" ?
- RoyalPwner, on 12/02/2007, -1/+39Note the misspellings.
I kind of expected it, though. I mean, it is gamespot. - fearlessfx, on 12/02/2007, -1/+38Must be hard to appreciate the graphics when your head is so far up your anus.
- Maxamegalon2000, on 12/02/2007, -9/+45Yes. Yes you are.
- Nerfdude, on 12/02/2007, -2/+38wow, you've got priorities. even your username proclaims your hatred.
i'm gonna go play gears. - Iwantawii, on 12/02/2007, -0/+36Low ping bastards.
- TheAtomicMoose, on 12/02/2007, -3/+38damnit. it's been like ten seconds and already three people have joked about "credability"... :-C I THOUGHT I COULD BE ORIGANAL!
- Relentl3ss, on 12/02/2007, -2/+34erm, then maybe you are stupid...
Adverts work on a target audience, video game site = video game ads, it's not that difficult a concept - Catbert107, on 12/02/2007, -3/+30The reason its such a big deal is because many people think it was because he gave a bad rating on a game that a company made that advertises on their site. It's so ***** corrupt
- silverbullet126, on 12/02/2007, -3/+27Premium subscription canceled .. I won't be back to gamespot.
- Nerfdude, on 12/02/2007, -0/+23see, i've got a desktop. i'm on it right now.
- BlueSkyfish, on 12/02/2007, -1/+24Because it's a ***** game that's only popular because of ad whoring.
- dsmx, on 12/02/2007, -2/+22 He wasn't fired for doing his job wrong, he was fired for giving an honest review of the sites sponsor.
- freetyme, on 12/02/2007, -1/+20I don't even have an xbox but some twisted side of me wants to go play Gears just to spite you and cause you another night of lost sleep.
For now though I'll go play SMG, Gears later. - rockrapdude, on 12/02/2007, -0/+17while being a gamespot user?always!
- Catbert107, on 12/02/2007, -6/+22It's 'I can haz job?'
- KloroFormd, on 12/02/2007, -0/+16People view the ads by going to the review pages. If the review process is obviously corrupt, there's no reason to go to the site.
- jeet404, on 12/02/2007, -0/+15Thats why you gotta be the ***** who plays with dial-up to tick everyone down :P
- LocalDocal, on 12/02/2007, -3/+18Perhaps a lot. After all, how many 12-year-olds do you know start questioning the integrity and corruption of something they love after an employee has been fired for their opinion?
- Juntistik, on 12/02/2007, -0/+15What kind of fanboy loser coins his username "*****" instead of "Wiirox", "Ps3fan", or "PCpurist"?
- Christbait, on 12/02/2007, -1/+14"I'm gonna go play Crysis at Max Detail"
Shame you don't care to play it at Max or even Medium gameplay. - inactive, on 12/02/2007, -4/+16god forbid anyone gives a ***** about something that isn't about apple, linux,or ron paul.
- davidszcz, on 12/02/2007, -3/+15No, but they could advertise for snack foods, soft drinks, best buy type stores, etc. All of these are things gamers are interested in.
- jayfarer, on 12/02/2007, -2/+13It has nothing to do with some dude getting fired and everything to do with game companies being able to control major game review/news sites.
If you can't see that, well, you are not very smart. Hate to be the one to break the news. - LosingTheFight, on 12/02/2007, -2/+13It's a damn shame, I used to find Gamespot somewhat entertaining. Oh well, gives me more of a reason to get some work done. I fully support the boycott; journalistic integrity is rare in the media today. Bravo for taking a stand.
- jaychuck, on 12/02/2007, -4/+14has anyone even been to http://www.gamespot.com recently? Don't say anything bad about a Mountain Dew, or your ass will surely be fired!
- Slog, on 12/02/2007, -0/+10If you're running Crysis at max detail, I can guarantee that you're getting unplayable FPS.
And by the way, I love how digg went from intelligent debates to 12-year-olds whining about anything and everything. What happened to the reasonably intelligent people? - juicebag, on 12/02/2007, -5/+15Gamespot is the cancer killing Gamefaqs.
- sakuraz, on 12/02/2007, -2/+11Well, not clicking on their ads while sucking up their bandwidth actually sounds alright.
- acex23, on 12/02/2007, -10/+19 I can't understand why sites that review videogames would let videogames be advertise on their sites at all.
- orph3us, on 12/02/2007, -0/+8*****. Reviewers are editors, and its understood that their reviews are their opinions. If it is his opinion that you should not buy a game because he thinks its bad thats his right and IMO responsibility as a reviewer to tell the audience. He should leave nothing of his opinion out, because reviews are opinions, nothing more. If the gamer trusts the reviewer then he/she will value this opinion. If he wants the game anyway, there's nothing stopping him/her from buying it. There might be another side of the story, but saying that him telling people not to buy the game is some sort of subliminal message that will control his audience and isn't opinion is *****. That is part of his opinion, and like I said, its his duty as a professional to leave nothing out and I'm sure he explains why he thinks the game shouldn't be bought, which is what a review to me should be.
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7lol you had a subscription at gamespot
- TitanX13, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7also the guy was fired over his review of the game. which he pretty much rated as crappy
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7kane and lynch is a ***** game
- fearlessfx, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7on an unrelated note: this comment system sucks balls.
- nnnr, on 12/02/2007, -2/+9Jeez, my clan won the Gamespot TF2 mutilation madness tournament and we were all given the total access subscription ($39) for a year an now it seems useless. Thanks for the $200 best buy gift card though.
- Agreb91, on 12/02/2007, -1/+8I am so mad at CNET, not GameSpot. CNET made the choice and I hate them for it.
- Tserk, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6"Telling gamers not to buy a game or to only buy it half price is viewed as derogatory, unprofessional, and out of place" THAT IS WRONG. In the age of $60 video games I need all of the 'don't buy this' advice that I can get.
- ShugNinx21, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6You don't always have to click on an ad for it to be doing work. Just seeing it and getting as many people as possible to see it is the primary function of an ad. Thats how ads work in TV, Print, at the movies, plastered on the side of a bus, on billboards... You don't click on those.
The fact that Gamespot is getting flooded with users means that there are alot of eyes seeing their ads. - Christbait, on 12/02/2007, -1/+7I am pretty damn fed up of bought reviews instead of honest reviews, no one has the right to distort our tastes and tell us what we must play when it usually ends up not even being worth our time in most cases.
- Aeric, on 12/02/2007, -1/+7At least PS3 made the list
