- barnis, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5wow cool...anyone know if the PS3 will play DIVX?
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19It will not out of the box, but you can install Linux and run it within that (as well as your favorite Bit Torrent client, etc.)
- latova, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6@chriskzoo: I wouldn't count on that. If they allow you to customize too much, they might open up the possibility of people pirating their games. With the amount of money and risks they're taking with the PS3, they can't afford to have people pirating games since they depend on software sales so much. Just because they said linux, it's probaly not the same linux that you would expect from a desktop pc.
- UKsHaDoW, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19They already said you can use yellowdog linux with it.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Just to clarify before everyone starts denying that Linux will be full on the PS3 -
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/
That version of YDL is specifically designed for the PS3 and includes over 2,000 packages. You can check out the featured applications here: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/apps.shtml
Includes Firefox, Thunderbird, Gaim, GIMP, Openoffice.org, a few media players...etc. Basically everything you'd want in a Linux package plus a lot more.
Don't expect it on launch though, according to the YDL site it's going to be at least a week or two after before the OS is distributed to the public. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16YDL 5.0 comes out Nev 27th for $50, will be available on DVD Dec. 11th, and then will be available for FREE on public mirrors beginning Dec 25th.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Also in reply to Latova, from what I understand the Linux will be unlocked, but it will run as a totally different entity from the main interface, requiring a quick reboot to get back into the game menu. This should prevent it from booting saved images straight onto the PS3 as long as Sony keeps their firmware up to date really.
- jeznav, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5@ Barnis
Nope, only mpeg formats.
Source: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html - NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6DIVX is an mpeg format
- barnis, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1EDIT --> my bad I see that it won't

"PLAYSTATION®3 allows any desired third-party system software to be installed on it besides its system software provided by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Details will be posted on this site soon."- crombenevolant, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Considering how hard core Sony is on DRM and anti-piracy, I would be extremely shocked it they really allowed "any desired third-party system software". My bet is they have some kind of vetting process, or a way to block out specific software or capabilities. There is no way they are going to allow you to install software that allows you rip a blu-Ray movie and stream it over to your ftp site for example....
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7I somehow doubt Sony will all ANY 3rd party app to be installed on it.
This Sony the DRM king we are talking about. - skoles, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9So I can't installl MediaCenter on it and stream movies to my 360?
- SpoBo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8We'll see huh .. I'm all for a third party media center that uses the wireless and the built in HD. It'll be the cheapest media station ever for that kind of functionality. It's powerful, quiet, big HD, Blu-Ray, WiFi, Ethernet, etc ... awesome :) Pretty soon people will forget that PS3 is meant to be a gaming console.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Sony has maintained since PS3 was introduced at E3 2005 that it is designed to be the ceterpiece to your home theatre/entertainment system, not just a gaming console.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7""PLAYSTATION®3 allows any desired third-party system software to be installed on it besides its system software provided by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Details will be posted on this site soon.""
And that's why I love PS3 - Kolenka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@crombenevolant
Since you have to boot either the Linux distro coming to the PS3 (Yellow Dog), /or/ the built-in OS, but not both at the same time... Sony still gets the lockout. You need to license decoders/players for Blu-Ray movies, and the games are all signed in such a way that Linux will not be able to boot them.
This is their way of getting a win-win... geeks get Linux on a console to hack around with... Sony gets to keep their gaming system theirs without worrying about Linux causing all sorts of holes in their DRM. The Firmware that loads the OS likely will prevent the 3rd party OSes from accessing important encryption chips if needed. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3skoles, If you have Media Center on it, why bother streaming it anywhere else?
- theonlybigboss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Although yellow dog looks like all I'll need (or want), do you think it is likely that i would be able to install vista?
- nstanosheck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@TheOnlyBigBoss, you cannot run XP on it as it runs on 8-core Cell Power processors rather than Intel or AMD processors.
- mikoyski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Cool. Just like the PSP's Interface. I just wonder if the interface with Linux installed would be better.
- jkoski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What's up with this 'remote play' feature? I haven't heard about this before... unless it's the 'rear-view mirror' thing, but it doesn't sound like what they're talking about.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You can load up videos on your PS3 and have it deliver it to your PSP either wirelessley (if you are within range) or over the internet anywhere in the world. So you can be in Paris on vacation and load up a video of your kids if you want over your PSP while enjoying an espresso and croissant.
- igdrasil61, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3The PS3 interface is ugly. Does Sony knows the term "art design". Works for PSP doesn´t mean it works for PS3.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16You say ugly, I say elegant (I agree is could use some sprucing up of the icons). It's more suitable to a home set top box, though, than the color circus the 360 Dashboard has going on.
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Have you EVER seen a manual that did justice to the actual product?
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I much prefer it over the candy-coated "blade" (boy does that sound kewl) interface.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23People need to realize what Sony is doing here. They are basically protecting the gaming portion of the PS3 by allowing people to do whatever most modders want to do outside the Game OS. For instance, most people that modded thier Xbox did so to put a larger HDD in (PS3 allows this with any 2.5" SATA drive: http://ruliweb2.dreamwiz.com/ruliboard/read.htm?num=19646&table=game_ps04&main=ps ) and because they liked the Xbox Media center - which you can do similarly by installing Linux. By allowing people to do this stuff without affecting the game portion of the system, it takes a lof of the luster away from crackign the GameOS to do those things, reducing the number of people that will be "illegally" modding the system.
I say bravo Sony for these options.- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Microsoft in the meantime designed the built in media component that works with MCE or Media Connect. Still I believe it to no where near as good since that specific part isn't open. It's possible the HDDs will be upgradable and I'm assuming they will be at some point since they will have no choice. What most don't know is that Microsoft plans to create a third party development homebrew kit that allows average joes to create legal xbox 360 binaries to be run on the system.
I think the key difference is that MS still isn't found of Linux but they want to be able to provide all the same things like the homebrew software for the original xbox. Its going to be interesting to see how both Sony and MS execute these plans. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, I see what MS is doing, but they seem to be trying to "keep up with the Jones's" with all their upgrades - 1080p, HD-DVD add-on option, tv shows/movies, etc. I don't think the XNA thing is even worht talking about because if we're lucky we might see 1 or 2 games comes from that. As it stands now, people using the XNA kit will only be able to give their games to other XNA kit owners and will need MS or another publisher to pick up the game for everybody else to play. The original playstation had something like this and I think the only game that ever was released was Devil Dice.
I still think Sony has a lot to prove if they want to match Xbox Live, so MS at least has a leg up in that dept. - NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6XNA also costs $99 a year. And is required to both play and make games. Where YDL is free.

- AzraelKans, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Cool details I have found on the user guide.
You can change the OS to another.
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/osinstall.html
You can use a Mouse and a Keyboard.
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/keyboard.html#1005
SO you can actually use it as a PC!
Also:
You can play games online for FREE in the Playstation Network through the "friends" option

Ouch! good bye Xbox live! - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What I'm trying to figure out is this under the Playstation Store:
"View Subscriptions Active subscriptions are displayed.
Subscriptions are services that can be used for a predetermined period such as 30 or 60 days. When the subscription expires, an extension for another subscription period is automatically purchased. When you want to unsubscribe from the service, perform the unsubscribe procedure under this option. "
What kind of subscriptions would be 30/60 days?- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You can get monthly or bi-monthly WOW subscriptions, also I think they were just using 1 or 2 months as an example.
- AzraelKans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hmm. Im not sure, newspapers? music downloads?
Anyway they are just mentioning that as as example. (such as 30 or 60 days)
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"The default codec is [AAC] and the default bit rate is [128 kbps]. You can change the codec and bit rate under (Settings) > (Music Settings) > [Audio CD Import]."
I'm still blown away by the fact that they have an audio ripping tool actually included in the PS3, looks like PR is working overtime to fix all of their DRM blunders. I assume the usual mp3 format is included in "codecs". I mean I still probably won't use it often, but that's cool that it's in there.- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4MP3, AAC and WAV
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That should finally shut up all the people who like to repeat the words 'root kit' like bloody parrots. It's really fun seeing the truth surface and to find out all the FUD has been empty and pointless. Another example: earlier today there was an article saying the Japanese aren't even queuing for the PS3. Now the truth is out in video form and we know they most definitely are. And it's bloody cold in Japan right now!
- bwesterman, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1I've finally gotten a great game system. It's called the PS2. Yes, PS2. I've had it sitting around for years. They never made any good games for it until this year. Final Fantasy 13 is dope. God of War was supa-fresh. Ogami, Shadow of Colossus, and the last Ratchet and Clank games are the only reason to get a PS... a PS2. PS3 can suck my balls (Cartman). Who cares about the PS3? The XBOX 360 has GoW and Ultimate MK3. ***** the PS3. There aren't any games for it. Dead Rising? Nope. Call of Duty 3? Gotta wait until next year. How can you care about a system that isn't even out yet?
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6COD3 is a launch game.
- Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6From your expletives and capitalisations, I hereby call fanboy.
The PS3 is showing itself to be a worth console, and I think that everyone knows this, no matter what console they are backing. This will turn out to be a good generation for gaming with 3 quality consoles. - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wait...so is this a joke? Not only did you misspell Okami, I have a library of over 60 PS2 games for the PS2 that proves your comment otherwise. I only regret buying two of them (and they were bargain basement crap that I was taking a gamble on). There was a ridiculously large amount of really great games coming out for the PS2 of all types of genres.
If you're going to bash a last gen console for having crappy games, I think I'd go for Xbox. Yeah sure they had a few really great games (Fable, Halo....I can't name any more that really stand out), but nothing unique, and the awesome games were sure as hell few and far between. 360 is shaping up to be a good console because MS is actually getting developers that are willing to depart from the past gen's habit to sticking to FPS, Fighting, and Racing games.
Also, to cover bases fairly, as much as I love my Gamecube, there were very few incredible games for it. I own 10 games for my GC and that's pretty much the extent of how many games that I really found outstanding on the console. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"How can you care about a system that isn't even out yet?"
Uh, you seem to care quite a lot about it. Explain that.
- Matt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10man im so buzzin for ps3 in the uk, cant wait to upgrade the seagate hdd to a 320gb one.
- ShyGuy91284, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sounds like it has lots of potential... And I will most likely eventually get it. But until I get the money for a PS3 and a decent HDTV or they have a few games I consider must-have, my XBox will do just nicely for multimedia. As for games, all the current gen systems (including PC) and the Wii will keep me occupied for a while.
- lunanul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hell Yeah! I'm so sick of people bashing on the ps3. Wii, wii, freakin' wii. Yes it'll be cool, but no where near as cool as the Playstation 3. Let us not forget what the ps2 did for us.
- noshovel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know how to connect other devices (like a cell phone) other than another controller or headset etc etc to the PS3 by wi-fi?? the manual didnt offer any help....and i have since lined my lobster cage with it........
