Playing Ocarina of Time on a PC using Twilight Princess' control scheme
youtube.com — Using the Wiimote, Project64, GlovePIE, my homemade sensor bar, and a Bluetooth USB dongle, I've set up Orarina of Time to play with Twilight Princess controls.
- 1000 diggs
- digg it
- docdoak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19The possibilities of using the Wii accessories with the PC have truly been discovered. Sure, we had some software to get some things working before now, but this is the best implementation I have seen yet...and it seems to work great.
- Xeppo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That looks utterly awesome. I really need to get a compatible bluetooth USB adapter so I can do this on my own computer.
- BlackSheepx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10...This is awesome, I can't even imagine all the possibilities the Wiimote could be used for. Nintendo should start selling things to hook the wiimote up to the computer, perhaps with various apps on a CD. This stuff has potential. I admire all the people working on stuff like this.
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28dongle is a funny word
- Earthacis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Was it just me or did anyone else look to Lik Sang when it came to plugging in your controllers to your computer?
- WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2This is really gay and I'm not going to explain why.. so just digg me down.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Really nice, the only thing that bothers me is that the Wiimote pointing abilities don't seem to work in an analog way in this demo. When aiming with the bow (or is it the slingshot?), the cursor seems to either move or not, no in-betweens.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok I take that back, I watched the video again, and the pointing aspect does seem to be analog, its just that it suddenly stopped moving quite a few times, probably because he's too close to the sensor bar.
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.wiili.org/forum/best-zelda-oot-script-ever-guaranteed-t1013.html
The actual script.
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You are my hero.
- iMatt711, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13how to article please?
- burgerpocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14im super impressed for two reasons:
not only is this totally amazingly awesome, but not a single person on digg or youtube has shouted "FAKE!" yet.- docdoak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I watched it carefully the first time and there was too much that worked perfectly with the hand motions and the stuff onscreen to think its fake.
- n0c0ntr0l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wrong, some real idiots did cry fake. There probably so ignorant that they don't know the program glove-pie. I don't own a wii, but this just convinced me to buy a nunchuk and wiimote to play my fps games.
- Xeppo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not fake. That is very possible. Project64 Emulates OoT perfctly, GlovePIE will map all the motions to buttons or axes and the Wiimote works very well over bluetooth. All it takes is to map the controls into Project64 properly.
- kevinthegeek, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3FAKE!
;) - truegodofwar, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8I'm using PJ64 to play through the majora's mask rom right now. I'm just hoping the emulator doesn't bugger out during the middle of the game. Some the menus don't display right and sometimes wierd ***** happens. OoT was better.
- truegodofwar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Why am I getting dugg down? I swear i will never understand what makes you ***** happy.
- jezzball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15you're getting dugg down because your comment had almost nothing to do with the topic.
- Guard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You said nothing about the Wiimote, thus missed the entire point of this.
- sam10685, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35no digg. he's a dumb ass. he took the wrist strap completely off.
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -13/+12you're a dumbass for needing a wrist strap
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6All passengers, please flip your sarcasm switches to the ON position, as we will be making our decent into the internet.
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is much better than playing it through the VC imo. The game runs perfectly through Project64, and the Wii controllers add a new feeling to an old game.
I'm guessing it's possible to add the nunchuck shake to execute the spin move too. Plus it's free!
One thing though...Zelda: TP uses the Wii's pointer to use the slingshot, arrows, etc. but I don't see the sensor bar in the video. Still works well.
A+ work...really impressed.- ilLH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The video's author has a comment to the right of the video mentioning that he's using a custom made sensor bar. I'm guessing that "bar" on top of his laptop with the lights is his homemade sensor bar :P
- epu2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3he uses two Infrared LED's on top of the laptop display
- Kriskcola, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think the sensor bar is the 2 red things on top of the monitor.
- ktchpmn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the video quality sucks ass, but it's still cool to see.

Get the rest of the stuff on your own time - RobotKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Orarina? Scooby Doo must have written that in the description.
- arkowi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Digg for making me say "Orarina" out-loud in Scooby Doo voice.
- benadamson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hahaha apologies, I copied the description from the YouTube page.
- fripple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Link in Ocarina of Time (and every other Zelda Game): Lefthanded
Link in Twighlight Princess (Wii Version Only): Right handed, for the purpose of easier and more natural control by the player.
I think it would be werid swinging the sword with my right hand when Link is holding it in his left. Can this be changed?- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well just play the game looking the screen's reflection in the mirror.
And don't forget to reverse the left and right controls in GlovePie, and learn to read mirrored text :) - PFS1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10>> I think it would be werid swinging the sword with my right hand when Link is holding it in his left. Can this be changed?
Nope. And now you know how it feels to be a lefty. WELCOME TO OUR WORLD OF MINOR BUT CONSTANT INCONVENIENCE. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PFS1:
If you're left-handed, why don't you just hold the Wiimote in your left hand and the nunchuck in your right hand? The Wiimote and nunchuck are designed so that you can use them in either hands.
After all, as a lefty, you'd hold a sword in your left hand no? Actually for lefties, OOT's controls seems more natural with GlovePie+Wiimote than Twilight Princess on the Wii since Link is left-handed in OOT. - jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My sister is left handed and plays the Wii in the "right hand method" (Wiimote in the right hand). She says the other way around feels weird.
- zouden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm left handed and I hold the wiimote in my left hand, unless I'm using the nunchuck when I use it like right-handed people.
Left-handed people tend to be a bit more ambidextrous so the Wii really isn't a problem for us. Remember, Shigero Miyamoto (creator of Zelda) is left-handed!
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well just play the game looking the screen's reflection in the mirror.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it could be green screened.
- blurn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@muikano
there are so many indicators that suggests that it is far from green screened. one --- video quality, really good- two --- synchronization, all of his motions are pretty much at the the same time as the screen- three--- the lighting of his hands matched the rest of the video...
*good suggestion though* - muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just don't get how he got the nunchuk to work. wouldn't we see a pc game using glovepie using the wiimote FULL by now?
- blurn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@muikano
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9wrong comment, digg me down

Why?- appleswitch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7you can leave now, you have no place here.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why?
- Niro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Ok it's a good video but it would be more interesting if can see some panning to see the surrounding, this could also be a recorded game play video, or some one using a wireless controller !! Who knows just my opinion i don't want to get to excited...
- Yukos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree that it is no reason to get excited, but I have trouble looking upon this video with cynacism. I don't think it would be at all difficult mapping the Nintendo 64 controller to a Wiimote, provided that one has the necessary know-how and software. Perhaps making sure that the correcting Wiimote actions are used at the correct time would be a problem, but I don't think that this video does anything that is beyond the realm of belief. Now, if the user was doing all of this with a Nintendo Power Glove, that would be a different story.
- Bigsby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I need now is a "How To" guide so I can get the same control scheme.
- Appox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Damn navi is annoying

- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15HEY!
- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4this shows how half-assed the Wiimote support in Zelda:TP really is...come on, they delayed the game for one YEAR to implement something that was added to Zelda:OoT by a single person in a few days at most...
honestly, I'd rather have had the game for the GC one year ago, than having to wait for a whole year for the half-assed Wii version...
the Wii version has no advantage over the GC version apart from the better aiming using the pointer...shaking the Wiimote or nunchuck to execute predefined sword-moves is no better than pressing the A or B button on the GC pad...
the Wii version even lacks the camera controls which the GC version has
well, there's still hoping Nintendo will do better with upcoming games...- Yukos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Honestly, I don't think that Zelda:TP was delayed repeatedly so that Nintendo could take their time while "adapting" it to the Wii; rather, I think it was delayed simply so that it would be a launch title for the new system. I completely agree that the Wii controls for Zelda:TP seem tacked-on and, at times, clumsy; but it is important to realize the Zelda franchise for what it is: market power. A Nintendo system launching with a new Zelda game, regardless of its roots on the Gamecube, is immediately going to create more buzz among consumers than anything in the Playstation 3's launch lineup. Resistence: Fall of Man is a good game, but it is not recognizable by the average consumer in quite the same way that Zelda is. Since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the intellectual property of Zelda is no longer a Nintendo franchise: it is a Nintendo icon. Zelda is in the same league as Mario, Grand Theft Auto, and Halo: it is an intellectual property that is so highly regarded by the average consumer that it prompotes the sale of gaming hardware. Zelda is a system-seller. That is the reason why Nintendo chose to delay it: The Gamecube had run its course and Nintendo wanted to launch the Wii with a blockbuster.
- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well, that's true, but they still had like one year to make some proper Wii controls, regardless of the reason why they delayed it...in the end, they even mirrored the whole game because there "was no time" to make Link right-handed...
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they needed it as a launch title
- evanstapler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Remarkable. Nice find.
- DrBokgi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Should be do-able on Mac as well. Darwiin remote, USB Overdrive, SixtyForce.
- mousky, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Geeks. Enough said.
- lampajoo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Wow... ruined a perfectly good PC by playing a console game on it with it's stupid, novelty controller. And then it's some gay game...
- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7be fair! it's not as gay as your father
and in the end, it's not us who upgrade our PCs for thousands of dollars, to make a man called Alan Wake look better...
- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7be fair! it's not as gay as your father
- doczein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anybody have any specific idea how to make a similar sensor bar like in the video? Do you have to plug anything from the sensor bar into your computer?
- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7light up two candles and place them on top of your screen
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, and sing "Oops I did it again!" while doing tribal dance around your PC
- sunspots, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I don't really buy this. I'm a skeptic at heart and it seems to me it would be very easy to fake this video. If this is genuine, then props to this guy who went to all the trouble of setting this control scheme up.
- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why is it so hard to believe?
there's everything you need to set up the control scheme, you don't even need any programming skills or anything...
just try glovepie and you'd see - pentomino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Comment dugg because you said "would be easy to fake" but stopped short of an accusation.
The only weakness in trying it yourself is, in order to do so, you need a Wii remote, and not everyone has one yet; supplies are pretty tight. If it's real, then it'll be common knowledge pretty soon.
- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why is it so hard to believe?
- BSherrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He could even use some of the hi-res texture packs that are available for N64 roms, some people are put a lot of work into making a N64 game look as good as possible.
