IMO they're both decidedly average.
FTA: they say "The Wii cover certainly seems to hint at a sense of sophistication and minimalism..." and "The PS3 is going for that not-especially-sophisticated or minimalist look then..." but don't actually justify either view.

Does any sane person base their purchasing decisions on whether or not there's a blue label at the top of the box? - gameguy43, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14yeah, i like the wii one better. personally i'm more a dark colors and sharp corners kinda of a guy, so at first glance the wii one didnt please me. however, at least it chooses it's soft look and commits to it, whereas the ps3 one just looks like *****. bet the president's 12-year-old son designed it.

It just screams "hey, look! we're special! we've got BLU-RAY!" I can easily understand why you'd do that for computer games, though, but for consoles? All people need to know is what platform the game is for, and they simply won't care about the format it's in as long as it works and is, you know... fun!

- colemip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I think the Wii box is much more elegant. I just realized that I don't see "Wii" as a word but rather as a symbol. I don't read the word "Wii" but rather see W-i-i together and think "Wii." It makes for a better, sleeker logo, I think.

When a consumer enters best buy, or view sunday paper ads, they are going to see ads for the ps3. While they may not buy one yet (pricing or availibility), the name Blu-ray will take hold. Enough to find out what exactly blu-ray is.

The Blu-ray blue cases will have little impact in attracting/detracting customers either way, but it may make it easier for the casual consumer who would look at the blue cases for Blu-ray movie and blue-cases for the PS3 games and immediately understand that the PS3 can play Blu-ray. Look, "mature" gamer = 14 to 19 year old guy who can't get a date, and judging by the games most people I know enjoy playing "kiddie" gamer = people 20-30 looking to play games with thier spouse/significant other/buddies on the weekend to save money not going to the bar. PS3 looks like more of the same. Sure, the same is fun. But I already own the same and am not inclined to pay a thousand bucks to get the same and a few games.
Wii looks like fun too BUT it is something new and different. - theweapon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have you guys seen the cases for blueray movies? That's what they look like, they have that blue bar at the top, they are thin (like the cases than come in TV box sets) and they are only about 75% of the height of DVD cases. They actually look kind of nice and will be good for saving space. Kind a compromise between CD cases and DVD cases.
The bar on the left with the PLAYSTATION 3 "logo" looks stupid though. They should have just made custom cases that have the Blueray logo AND the Playstation logo on the top blue bar. It seems more like the article was submitted because people would see "PS3", "Wii", and "compared" all in one headline, and enthusiastically digg any chance at trashing the PS3. ;)
