- cam2009, on 10/12/2007, -14/+59does any else not want to vertically scroll through thousands of songs in the music section they showed? there will have to be some kind of music player for the final design. the same goes for everything else. yes, its simple, but if the ps3 wants to be a "computer", then it needs to be more flexible than a glossy menu. it looks more like something for a portable system (they were talking about psp similarities in the video), but if my computer has a 60 gig hard drive, I want some kind of options besides installing linux.
- jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -7/+47I'm guessing there are a few Wii fanboys on Digg...?

360: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inNSbGQuM5g - adamjhwkfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25actually, the way it's setup is that you can create at least one sub-directory so you don't have to scroll through ALL the music files. (ie. by band name, or classification).
At least that's the way it is in the PSP's file structure.. - afex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26'we'?
jeez man, its not a sports team. they're electronics. - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I will be curious to see how the PS3's system scales as more data is made available for it. That system looks good if you have maybe a 100 options (10x10) available, but it is going to need to eventually support significantly more than that. I know the 360 blade system also struggled with this early on - it was fine for the limited amount of content at launch, but then quickly became cumbersome as they ramped up the amount of content available on the system. The amount of pieces of content available on XBL can be counted in the thousands now and the amount being added seems to be accelerating. This summer they made an OS update to allow for much more heirarchical categorizations of the data which has helped navigation significantly. I'm not really seeing how you would do heirarchical navigation on the PS3's system but I am sure they will figure something out.
- phidong, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20The PS3 interface looks alright. It's really nothing new, and I'm not convinced that the PSP's interface is the best solution for it. The text is so small compared to the rest of the screen (a lot of wasted space) and cam2009 touched upon some valid points.
I don't think the youtube videos are a fair comparison for either system. The PS3's interface is shown recorded on a LCD and the xbox dashboard's video has been captured, but in SD and the person controlling it is going through the menus/options excessively slow.
As for the linked aeropause article... you can read comments regarding that here:
http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/PS3_Versus_Xbox_360_Interface - svBlackManta, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Must be a 14 year old girl.
- nickerbocker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23I like how they got the important stuff working first. Videos and pictures. Things you need in a gaming system.
- Atreiu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Exactly You can make folders to make searchin more easier. The PSP has an easy to work menu.
- Enchirito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Innovation is important, but product originality is overrated.
It's not who does it first, it's who does it best. - afex, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22i think the 'blades' of the 360 is one of the most intuitive interfaces i've seen for a while..
(i dont actually have a 360, i'm basing this off of the MC360 skin for XBMC).
in fact, now that i think about it...perhaps they should take a hint from XBMC and ship the systems with several different skinning options - that way, everyone can find something they find intuitive. - SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19And that's good for you. Some people however are expecting to get more than a game console out of their $1000 investment (what it'll cost by the time we buy HD Cables, controllers and games). A solid interface is important to help us find all these expensive features we're paying for.
Call me crazy, but If i was just going to buy something for the games i'd get a Wii or a 360 and spend all that extra money ON GAMES. - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Afaik you can only post one link in your digg article. The point is to compare 2 different videos. The videos are nicely embedded in the blog article and work pretty nicely for me. I could care less about this guys blog either, but there is nothing wrong with what he did.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I really don't like the idea of using the XMB (Cross Media Bar) on the PS3. The interface is simplistic and basic which makes it great for first timers, but power users will fast realize how annoying it is.
Music playback better be much better than that of the PSP. The music player on the PSP is the biggest crock of ***** i've ever seen. No seek bar (which is important for podcast listeners) and no bookmarking? What the hell is that?
That said, i love the blade system on the 360. Clean, easy to use and deep in features. You'd figure that sony has had months to take some cues from microsoft... they better have something better in the final product. - n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20I could care less what the interface is like, I am buying it for the games not the interface.
- tripm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17I'D BUY THAT FOR $700.00
Oh wait, no I wouldn't... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"I'm just hoping they don't do the dial a letter keypad"
The PS3 supports USB keyboard and mouse so no cellphone type writing will be in need - Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Everyone will use their PS3 for something different.
Some people will want to play all their music and videos on their PS3, whilst some people will only want to play games on theirs and then there's the greedy people who want everything :p
At the end of the day, you can't please everyone, and its what the majority want, I have no doubt that Sony will produce a stunning console, because they are coming out after Xbox they will know where they went wrong and what they can improve on, so hopefully they will continue to improve the PS3 until its release and after. - oGMo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Eh... I mostly just followed the PS2/GC generation and caught up some stuff for the PSX. Honestly, compared to "big" collections, it's not all that special (i.e. people who have nearly everything from the Atari days on).
After all this time I'm not sure why people are so worried about the PS3 price anymore. It'll probably drop by $100 or so within a year. How many people had PS2s within the first 6 months? I didn't. Grab a Wii and wait til the PS3 is in your price range... by then it'll have a ton more games, too. Hell I didn't even get a PS1 until long after FF7 was out.
It's all about the games. Not the name on the box. - dementedcrabs, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I don't know about you, but PS3's interface looks more clean and isn't cluttered like the 360. MS looked like they tried to stuff too much stuff in between them blades. I haven't seen Sony's final interface, but so far it looks pretty good and simple. 360 has a good interface, but I think it's too cluttered.
- NastyNate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Youtube.com is blocked at my workplace.
So I say thank you for posting on your blog. - walterd93, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6if youtube was blocked, regardless of where the "video box" is, it would still be blocked...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The thing is, however, that to most users, the 360's blade layout is the only one they'll ever use, so your point is moot.
- Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You have no idea what you're talking about. It says he has 7 gigs left.
I have 5 profiles on my 360 with 3-5 trailers, 6 demos, a few arcade games, and whatever size saves are, with 6 gigs still left. That's still plenty of room, as I know I'll be deleting demos I don't play or need anymore. On top of that, I don't bother filling my HD with music since I can stream it from my PC.
Your username suits you, keep flinging the *****. - wolfzombie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10What I want to know about the PS3 is if it can connect across the network and play music/movies from other computers. I don't want to have to transfer everything over from one box to another in order to play it. If it can, then it may have just gained a few notches in what console to buy next.
- gh02t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Im guessing they are targeting the XMB torwards "light" users and whatever flavor of linux they come up with torwards power users
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good rounding skills.
- UnnDunn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I prefer the PS3 interface, but only just. The Xbox 360 interface is way to big; it completely fails to take advantage of the HD screen, and many of the UI elements take up needless space without actually doing anything.
The PS3 version of the XMB minimizes clutter and doesn't get overly unwieldy. Plus it takes advantage of the HD screen with smaller text and greater information density when appropriate. - Clemenceau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Looks like the PSP, though that's not a bad thing. Sony has a good habit of "if it's not broken, don't fix it." Same goes for their controllers: a great controller, no reason to change it unless there's a good reason to.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7oGMo, i think you're a pretty special case. 233 games? Jesus man.. I have about a tenth of that.
Don't get me wrong, i Havent decided what console i'm going to buy yet, that decision will be made in january, but price point might very well effect my decision. We're talking a $200+ difference here, even at $60/ea $200 is 3 games.
If i'm going to buy a PS3 (which is a possibility) It'll be for more than just the games. I just can't justify spending that much money to play a couple hours of games a week.
Of course, too each his own I guess. I'll give you props. That's a huge ass game collection. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think that the XMB is one of the nicest interfaces I have ever used. Simple and intuitive. That said however, part of that is because of the limitations of the PSP's storage space. You can't have that much media on it, so navigation is easy and quick.
With 60 GBs, this might not be the best interface, unless they modify it a bit. - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Theres a video of the [unfinished] internet browser in action from e3:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=aDqlNQf_nNo&search=ps3%20browser
Just because it wasn't available in one video doesn't mean that it's not progressing. The pictures and music are trivial to get done within the interface since the PSX had the same functions. - oGMo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@SupaDawg: Considering IGN estimates my game collection alone at $8600 plus, and I haven't even updated it recently, I don't think hardware cost is going to be that significant, do you?
http://club.ign.com/b/list/custom?lid=100018&owner=rpav&mode=vown - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow, these videos I seen, they are actually making me excited about the PS3. Should I call my doctor? I hope this isn't a serious problem! I don't wanna die!
Anyways, I think the Interface is cool but the only problem is the music and photos. I hope you can be able to make folders or something. I am glad they finally brought back the "Screensaver" thingy for when the music plays. I hope you can change the colors and such. Why didn't they put the "Screensaver" thingy for PS2? I am also glad you can use a mouse and keyboard so that is cool. I am actually impressed with this. I cannot wait for the Wii and the Ps3! If the PS3 flops, look at it this way, its one pimped out Ps2 :D - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How was the Xbox 360 video even a fair comparison - the guy didn't even show the different blades, etc. Also as someone mentioned the Xbox 360 UI demo is in SD while the PS3 is in HD - Looks like was meant to be biased towards Sony.
- gothsquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9It may look sweet but with approximately 1gb of stuff on my psp i can tell that, that menu is going to be a pain in the ass for anyone with more than say 20 files they want to go with.
I'm just hoping they don't do the dial a letter keypad, its the most awful interface any decent piece of electronics has. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6go to System > Themes
you can change the blades and background to suit you. - stenk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ Chris9902
Themes are not that great on the 360. If you buy themes from XBM then all blades will show a different image, but if you customise your OWN theme they will not allow you to change your blade to show lets say a different picture on each blade. It will show the same image on all Blades, which is pretty stupid in my opinion. - davehendrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Get back to work! You boss should probably block your access to Digg too, you lazy youTube watchin', not workin' person. Nah seriously, your great.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anyone else get the jest that the people demoing it knew jack sh*t? The guy didn't even know the resolution and the girl didn't even know if you can import pictures for the user picture.
- phidong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I do a lot of my photo work on the computer as well and sometimes watch tv shows/movies while I do it on my PC, but sometimes I'll admit that it is nice to sit or lay down and watch a movie on my TV. I probably stream media to my xbox via MCE more often than I play games (or so it seems). It's definitely a difference experience watching a show on my tv than via my LCD.
You're right though, I don't think the GUI will be a selling point for either system. Both look usable and are probably (for the most part) avoided if you're just going to straight game. I think Microsoft has done a good job of putting some of the most important features of the dashboard on a small blade you can access from inside a game or anywhere (has messages/friends/people you've met on it) as well as a music player that will replace in game music. It's unfair to judge that against the PS3 demo we saw though since Sony decided not to show any interface while in the game, or any gaming at all. - nexxau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Linux already runs on a variety of platforms and CPU architectures. The source code (which is freely available) just needs a compiler.
- modnar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Xbox 360 video was done in SD, as mentioned in the video. The PS3's was in HD. Talk about a fair comparison.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Then go view the dozens of other videos of it playing games.
- Yokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think I can agree with you, however everything in the PS3 (or PSP) interface felt more "fluid" than the Xbox360 interface. One thing I dont like is how the Icons are "set up" so to speak. I hope the PS3 will allow you to move/remove things that you either dont need or want repositioned.
- friedriches, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So the customization of the PS3's interface will limited to the color of the background. How would the visualizer work if there is a personal background? I guess it could fade in. I found the visualizer to be boring- it didn't sync with the music, it was just a cloth texture. Seen it before. The 360's viz is interactive, at least (though it does make you feel like you got some bad LSD or something).
And in regards to the 360's blades being "bland and featureless", with carbon blades and my clan's background, it looks fairly pimptastic. All gritty and stuff.
I don't like the PSP's interface as it is, so now yet another reason to convince me to build a Vista PC instead of buying a PS3. - sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4you got enough money and know how to train every beautiful presentation girl with the minutest details?
if then, I'll hire you straight away.
it's not that easy. - jromz03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3RE: PS3 menu
Looks alright, especially if you're used to the PSP interface. Using the PS3 controller motion sensor might also make it easier to navigate. -
