- sanwedgy, on 11/21/2007, -37/+203Not bad?
Seeing as the PS3 had:
A stupidly high price point
A lack of great exclusive games
The biggest internet hate campaign ever
and was against the Wii as well as the 360, i would call that pretty fantastic! - KrustyTClown, on 11/21/2007, -21/+176Not bad for the PS3, seeing as the 360 had no competition when it was released.
- MattEaston, on 11/21/2007, -9/+89How about 3 price cuts, bundles, blu-ray, the Playstation brand, and no shortages...
- shaka999, on 11/21/2007, -18/+72Wow, the Wii makes the others numbers look pathetic.
- Haleon, on 11/21/2007, -21/+66Keep in mind that the the Xbox 360 was impossible to find for about 9 months after launch; whereas, the PS3 was pretty easy to find about 8 weeks after launch. That makes a pretty big difference.
- sinurgy, on 11/21/2007, -6/+45Not when you consider the difference between the Wii and the 360/PS3. The latter are geared towards gamers while the former is geared towards casual or non-gamers. The pool of casual or non-gamers is HUGE in comparison to the pool of gamers.
Now before any fanboys start flaming me, I'm not saying you can't be a gamer and own a Wii, I'm just saying the Wii isn't really geared towards the gaming crowd as much as it is geared towards families, kids, senior citizens, etc. It's the peoples game console, which isn't a bad thing. - sinizuh, on 11/21/2007, -15/+53Xbox 360 and PS3 on par for the first 52 weeks. Then Gears of War ("Killer App") came out on the Xbox 360. Anyone knows of a "Killer App" coming out for PS3 this holiday season? (haven't been following PS3 game list)
- gamarada717, on 11/21/2007, -5/+36I really don't see why people care about sales so much. I am 100% satisfied with my 360...it's not like my system gets worse if the competition sells better. If anything, I'm glad to see PS3 selling a lot, it just means Microsoft will work harder to make the 360 even better.
- xposiactionx, on 11/21/2007, -7/+37Man, I don't own either one yet, but it sure is funny watching you dude-bitches complain about companies you dont work for or have any vested interest in. Just sayin.
- mgolus, on 11/21/2007, -12/+41And I would expect the PS3 line to do the same in the next few weeks...that spike on the 360 line would be right around Christmas time last year, and guess what time of the year it is right now...
- charlescheese, on 11/21/2007, -10/+36Anyone who's played Uncharted Drake's Fortune will tell you that it's the correct answer. Sony has not done a good enough job hyping this game, but they should. Best game experience I've had this gen for sure.
- pseudostryph, on 11/21/2007, -7/+32Look at the comparison for just my house. The Xbox 360 sold 1 more unit in its first year than PS3 did. That is significant. That is infinitely more units in my house. In my friend's house, the PS3 is on track to outsell the Xbox's first year. It seems like the Xbox's popularity is mostly in my house, but it is significantly more popular. I don't know what that says about the whole thing or what impact that actually has worldwide.
- RyanBlueThunder, on 11/21/2007, -5/+29Interesting. Those worldwide sales numbers just show how poorly the 360 is selling in Japan...
In the US, the 360 has had much quicker sales than the PS3.
As a 360 owner, the biggest issue for me has become: what console do my friends have? Since my buddies are all on Xbox LIVE, it has made the 360 so much more of a draw. Even though the PS3 looks to offer some amazing games (and is a fantastic bluray player), the fact remains that as long as my buddies are all on LIVE, I'll likely purchase any multiplayer games on 360...that's what the community does. - Jargonaut06, on 11/21/2007, -6/+28Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank are both incredible games.
- blakyce, on 11/21/2007, -6/+27Not selling hardly any machines in Japan really hurts the results for the X-Box 360. I would be interested in what this graph would look like for North American sales.
- walkingdogs, on 11/21/2007, -3/+23"http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii®1=Am ..."
All 3 just North America since launch. - epj3, on 11/21/2007, -6/+26Oh noes my console is selling better/worse than teh other consolz!!!
Just play the damn games, geeze. - scabbers, on 11/21/2007, -1/+16I wish people would put this stuff in BUSINESS NEWS where it belongs. Stop clogging up gaming news.
- wild, on 11/21/2007, -7/+22"I know you want to justify your purchase with these feel good stories."
Sounds like someone wants to justify his purchase by mudslinging against feel good stories. - saisumimen, on 11/21/2007, -10/+24... so, no.
- logiksan, on 11/21/2007, -7/+20The PS3 has the advantage of a number of second-year ports that the 360 didn't have, and as such, has a bigger selection of titles available for it than the 360 did during it's first 12 months. It's also one of the cheapest BD players on the market, which also helps.
It's still got an awfully big hill to climb to catch up to the 360 in terms of systems sold and the quality of their first party and exclusive titles. - fraggle35, on 11/21/2007, -19/+32It was competing with an already established PS2.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/21/2007, -4/+16It's not a killer ap. I love all my PS3 games (about 7), but i'm not about to call any of them 'killer aps'. Then again, I've never played Gears Of War or Bioshock, so I don't really know what i'm comparing it to.
- PhantomRogue, on 11/21/2007, -6/+18It says the World is bigger than North America. Will the Lower installbase across the world hurt the 360? Unlikely, but the Article is ment to be Ironic in that the PS3 sales match the 360, even with the obvious shortcomings it has/had.
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -17/+28That's only because for every xbox they sold they had to give a replacement.
- MWeather, on 11/21/2007, -5/+16Not if you factor in price.
- cusoman, on 11/21/2007, -4/+15It's called the Holidays, and I guarantee PS3 will do the same. At the same rate? I don't know, but it will surge.
- Aggaman, on 11/21/2007, -8/+19Not so good for Microsoft. Their bet was always that the 360 would establish an unassailable lead. At least that was the point of the early release sans HD optical drive. If the PS3 has been able to keep pace at that price, what is going to happen when its superior hardware starts to tell (and yes, I own both consoles). On the other hand, it looks like we'll have two competing consoles rather than one big winner this time around, so that's good for next gen gamers. Meanwhile Nintendo are laughing all the way to the bank. ;)
- FordSVT1, on 11/21/2007, -3/+14I've been gaming since 1979, and the Wii's software to hardware ratio is all the proof anyone need that the Wii is selling mostly to people who don't game that much. Not to say the "hardcore" don't own them too, but most people I know who own Wiis haven't touched them in months. It's going to be another Cube or N64: buy it for the Nintendo 1st party games, play something else during the months or years in between.
- Etherel15, on 11/21/2007, -1/+11Gotta through a "well actually" at you. Because if other systems start getting popular, your system stops getting attention from game developers, which means less games, less exclusives, less support, and, games will be developed for the other systems, and have crappily transfered ports to your system, where the controls weren't thought through and the graphics seem to stall in some areas. I agree with the console war being stupid as hell (except when xbox first launched and they were arrogant as hell, and now sony's Mightier-Than-God attitude). I usually just flame against the I R teh uber console Owners, U's Console is Teh Sucketh! kind of fanboys :)
- Ajajadude, on 11/21/2007, -8/+18Yeah, but when your "next"-gen console has to truly compete with a "last"-gen console, you have some problems.
- UnWeave, on 11/21/2007, -5/+15These are global statistics, not your comparatively small network of friends. Get a grip.
- NGliam, on 11/21/2007, -10/+20thats an unfair comment thomas. It was 1/3rd not a 1/2.
- SinisterDexter, on 11/21/2007, -4/+14I still don't get why it needs to be a competition. All three companies are making money and catering to different markets. And for the record, I own a 360 and a Wii and would be interested in a PS3 if there were more than a few games on it that I wanted.
- Guspaz, on 11/21/2007, -9/+18I'm not exactly a 360 fanboy (I hate the PS3 mainly because I hate Sony as a company, above and beyond the PS3), but here is my "spin"
1) As Sinuzuh pointed out, the 360's killer apps (Gears, Halo 3, etc) came out in the 360's second year of life. We'll have to wait and see how the PS3's own killer aps affect sales before we have any really meaningful data.
2) The PS3's recent price drop (40GB model) had an enormous (positive) impact on sales. While this happened late in the game, Sony's decision to try to price their console competitively certainly helped.
3) As has been pointed out, the 360 had some serious availability issues for a few months. The PS3 has been available for general purchase on and since launch day. This, again, may reflect in the second-year sales; the 360 may have exited the first year with pent-up demand left unsatisfied, which may have positively affected sales during the second year. Which, along with points one and two, just goes to reinforce the fact that the second year data will be much more interesting to compare, when the PS3 has completed the second year of its lifecycle.
As much as I hate Sony, I find the battle for marketshare by all three companies to be positively fascinating. - reed311, on 11/21/2007, -6/+15Not really. The Sega Genesis was competing with the NES.
Introducing a new console with better graphics does not instantly make old consoles obsolete. There were dozens of amazing games released on the PS2 after the 360 came out. - SSCrow, on 11/21/2007, -1/+10well both systems at $400 at each point in their lifetime.
Lower price = More sales. - MWeather, on 11/21/2007, -2/+11So how much more did the PS3 cost than the Wii over that time span? About 2.5 times more?
- gamarada717, on 11/21/2007, -2/+11You sound about like me. I would love to play to PS3 games...but nothing beats the community of people on xbox live, and ever since Halo 3 came out, almost all of my friends have gotten a 360 and we always play on live together...it's usually not even Halo 3.
- incognit0, on 11/21/2007, -4/+12Haha, the Wii has no quality games and is collecting dust on everyone's shelves as they play their PS3/360.
- Hale, on 11/21/2007, -5/+12They're even in worldwide sales because the X360 barely sold at all in Japan. And yeah it will be interesting to see how the PS3 does this holiday without any major releases.
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=PS3®1=Al ... - webmasterjoe, on 11/21/2007, -1/+8It's a competition because the population that is willing to own three current-generation consoles is pretty small. A much bigger chunk of the market will buy one, if any. Therefore, they wait until it looks like everybody else is getting one particular console, and then they wait until the next big shopping push (such as Christmas) and get one then. It has to be competitive because each company knows that (for most people) if you buy console A, you won't go buy console B - at least not for a few years.
- Asianwaste, on 11/21/2007, -5/+12No use in arguing with this guy. He's got a screen name after a Pokemon. You can smell the fanboyishness a mile away.
- VictoryGin, on 11/21/2007, -4/+11So is the PS3
- dunlop, on 11/21/2007, -13/+20http://www.news.com/2100-1043_3-6028933.html
"When its Xbox 360 console launched late last year, Microsoft experienced rampant shortages in the U.S. and Europe." - modix, on 11/21/2007, -2/+9They announced a deal with DivX just a few days ago. The PS3 will support DivX in an upcoming patch.
- triplehelix, on 11/21/2007, -3/+10initially maybe, but not the entire year.
- inajeep, on 11/21/2007, -4/+11True but I would call the 'hate campaign' generated by their collectively putting their marketing foot in their mouth. The arrogance hasn't been forgotten yet, has it?
- bdorry, on 11/21/2007, -2/+9While I don't own a PS3, I have played a bit of Ratchet, its a good game for sure, though NPD results shown it isn't selling exceptionally well.
- teamparadox, on 11/21/2007, -3/+9While hardware sales are important...why not compare game sales? The 3rd parties do look at total units but if games arent selling then it doesnt make a difference and that was the downfall of the GCN. Tie ratio for the 360 is 3x as high as PS3 or Wii so...there you go.
