- NOAMattD, on 10/12/2007, -5/+95December 22TH, eh?
- Threnody, on 10/12/2007, -2/+83Why not read about in comic form? http://www.opera.com/img/products/devices/nintendo/wii/releasedate_comic.gif
Yes Opera is a weird company - rewquio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+55I'll take a trial version instead of waiting another 4 months any day.
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42What's the problem? It's clearly coming out on the twenty-twoth.
- Waffledog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Nope:

Full version in March, free as well. After June, it's $5. And looks like the trial includes Flash support for YouTube videos and Wii-cade stuff. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Yes, one day after December 21nd. Duh
- icantdrawanime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32They also mention that its a trial version, which is a nice euphemism for its not done yet and you get to test it for us.
I hope this isnt what Nintendo referred to when they said that the opera browser could be downloaded for free until june 2007 - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18What a wonderful Christmas present. First the Weather Channel, now this. Thanks, Nintendo!
- 5hop4orce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18The twenty-seconth is my favorite day of the year.
- icantdrawanime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Huzzah
Never been happier to be proven wrong - Hazardc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15now they just need to fix the godawful way of adding friiends.
weird how exciting having internet on your tv is now with stuff like youtube, when things like webtv from years ago barely got off the ground before crashing - slsanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@ rewquio
If you could edit submissions after the fact you would have people changing front page stories headlines/descriptions to anything from special interest material, advertisements, or just offensive material. - Rabbethan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@blahtastic
Do you really need to type like that? - Hazardc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8for the most part you're right, but streaming media is where this kinda thing is going to shine for a while
it will be more fun to watch videos of people getting pile driven off of the roof on my big screen
granted.. 480p is the one thing i think sucks.. but the Wii isn't going to need to have the lifespan that the 360/ps3 need to have. nintendo will be able to release a new console before 2010 - weezerrock86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm guessing this is Nintendo's surprise for us before the end of the year. Very nice, cant wait the weather channel was a neat surprise a day early as well. Now they need to surprise us with some better VC games. :D
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I seriously just typed a status report for work with "December 22th" in it after seeing this thread.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The weather globe thing is awesome!
- CaptainRotundo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9This is the kind of error that strikes as an English is a second language mistake. I don't know if English is the submitter's first language, but I tend to let mistakes slide when I assume they were made by someone not native in my language, and hope they do the same for me when I butcher theirs.
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Lousy Smarch weather!
- j0ew00ds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You think, like the weather channel, that the 22nd means the morning of the 21st?
- fitzwillie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So, here are my big questions/causes for anticipation: with a browser and the wireless access, will I be able to see my NAS and access its files with my Wii? Since the Wii will play mp3s, will this turn my Wii into a streaming music device? Will I be able to play internet radio through my Wii? Can I play videos off my NAS on my Wii? Or, going the roundabout path with Flash support, access my media via Orb.com? Inquiring minds want to know....
- Refrag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If they add a music channel, it needs to be able to play your Itunes library using Bonjour.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/ - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Full version comes in March, and is free until June '07.
And I don't know what you mean by "nickel and dime." None of these things are required buys, and some people will certainly have no use for them. I will get the Opera browser when it comes out since it's free, but I don't have very much of a use for it. I have a front-projection system that I use with my PC, and a wireless keyboard and mouse, so I can browse the web with my PC from my couch.
And there is nothing wrong with the VC. XBLA is essentially the same thing, and no one is complaining too much about that. If people want it, they pay for it. No one is forcing you to buy. And Nintendo isn't going along with EA's happy little pay-cheat-codes option. - silverweed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No, the press release was from Opera, a company which is located in Europe. Did you read the press release? Did you even look at the url?
Its good that you love2digg, but maybe you should learn2read. - hoowahman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My computer and 50" plasma are in different rooms. I'd imagine it could be fun to sit back / lay down and just surf with the wiimote on the plasma (which is way bigger than my computer monitor) instead of going downstairs and sitting on my computer in a chair. The environments are quite different for me. I am betting that you have both in the same room so you dont care.
- burndive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here's the User Agent String for the browser in the Wii Shop Channel: I can't imagine it will look much different.
Opera/9.00 (Nintendo Wii; U; ; 1038-58; Wii Shop Channel/1.0; en) - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The weather thing is pretty sweet, but I hope it evolves a bit.
The (c) notice on screen says all images belong to NASA. Considering NASA has a Google Earth competitor (world wind: http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/), wouldn't it be sweet to see World Wind on the Wii?
Handling the globe with the Wiimote was so natural feeling... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When is the US release date of the Opera browser for the DS? Haven't they already had it in Japan for a few months now???
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Um..no..unfortunately. Wiicade and video streaming can still be useful on a television though. Maybe they'll upgrade the Wii's 2 USB ports to actually do something in the future, but as of now there's nothing until they release the ethernet to usb adapter.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope not. I mean VC monday next week has Toejam and Earl for some, but others would rather pine for a certain plumber to show up with his hallucinogenic fungus and flammable plants...
That would certainly make our day. - airencracken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where the hell is the DS browser?
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3they need to add a music channel where you can plau audio Cds or plug in an MP3 player full of music into the USB port.
- wyattearp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yes ... but can you play flash based web games from wiicade.com on your 57 inch cell phone screen?
- vashgunfighter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, cool. It says in the press release from Nintendo that the Opera Browser will be in its final version and free to download from March til the end of June. That means trial for a few months then full version for free if you jump on that in within the months of March, April, May, and June...mark your calendars folks or pay $5 (or 500 points in the Wii Shop Channel).
For those of you who didn't click the link for the press release, here it is again:
http://www.nintendo-europe.com/NOE/en/GB/news/article.do?elementId=IsC-1sqxBzf2X6D1MAbsTCubYmGJRdR9 - silverweed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty sure the date on the story says December 19th, so its not an old story. I'm also pretty sure that the browser will be released simultaneously for everyone, much like the simultaneous release of the weather update: so its not a duplicate story.
Why do so many people on digg post dumb ***** even though they must themselves know it is dumb *****? - rewquio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@slsanity
Yeah, I know, but I was just trying to be a smart ass because the first guy was giving the submitter a hard time because of a typo. I don't think this is fair because you can't fix mistakes once they are made. I just wish there was some nifty web 2.0 method you could do it while avoiding spam at the same time. I bet if the smart guys at Digg wanted to they could come up with something. And no, somebody else doesn't have to tell me that people should double check their submission before hitting the submit button. I know that too. - nathanstl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's the US version:
http://www.nintendo.com/newsarticle?articleid=oS8Klm5H18T28aIpKUv4FVU6QAX4ywrB&page= - worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um... ahawks... how about reading the comments before yours? I mean, seriously... Why are you asking about stuff that's been answered just a moment ago?
- skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://midwestgames.stores.yahoo.net/ningamkeyadc.html
There is a PS/2 -> Gamecube controller port adapter available; I'm not sure if it would work with Opera though, if not you could bug Opera to add support using their forums. - Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2w00t
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8I read the title quick. thought it said Oprah Internet Channel for Wii.
my mom woulda loved that.
lol - Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blast, I go home to an area without a wireless connection Thursday night.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've wondered about this myself. The Wii certainly has the power for a "media center" use like this, and it has the connectivity for it as well. It's much like the original XBox in this regard.
I wonder if Ninty will decide at some point in the future to add this kind of functionality. It would certainly give MS and Sony a swift kick in the balls that they didn't see coming.
I love my modded XBox as a media center, it works GREAT. It would be even better if the Wii would do this. - iLEZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A "big" issue for me is that most websites (digg, youtube, etc) are designed with white backgrounds. My TV is nearly antique and #FFFFFF "burns" into it instantly. The white controller in the Wii "home"-menu leaves a blue trace on my screen for about a minute. I can't imagine what my old tv will look like after an hour of YouTubing! There should be an invert-feature in the Wii Opera for cheap people like me. ;)
- jparkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think the weather channel being a day early was nessecarily a surprise for us. It seems logical to release things like this a day or so early 1) so their servers won't get flooded when everyone tries to download it at the same time and 2) if they run in to a really big problem the day before they have a chance at fixing it and avoiding screwing something up on the day it was officially released.
But hey, a day early is always a plus. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i think its on the 23.
- rusackas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally (and unfortunately), a reason to actually care if the websites I develop work in Opera. Maybe I'm alone, but before I never much cared, since people who use Opera most likely have a mainstream browser standing by as well. I wish it were Firefox, but hey... at least my Wii has a browser now.
- damnyooneek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they will just update it with parental controls just like the games dumb nut
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3digg down
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2screw them. the devils r #1!!!
