because opera is better
it has more features, loads pages faster, uses less memory, etc. - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Something tells me this will lead to some stupid browser argument, but....
I use Opera because it feels less bloated than Firefox. The computer I use for casual browsing isn't exactly top-of-the-line, and the slow loading time of FF, along with the memory leaks weren't really doing it for me.
That, and despite the fact that extensions add some really cool functionality to FF, it still felt like a hassle having to find extensions. Upgrading FF was a bit annoying, too. You'd upgrade only to find out that you actually had less functionality because the author of a certain extension still hadn't updated their extension.
I went with Opera because it's much faster, and it has everything I need built in. That's why I use it, at least. - abid786, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40Because of the fact that I don't want to install and keep updating all those extensions (Opera has more built in). But Firefox is a great browser also.

god firefox? - Alfyx, on 11/07/2008, -5/+26One word: zoom.
- Matt88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I use firefox at home but at work they still have explorer 6. To get around this I use Opera portable which sh1ts all over firefox portable.
- TimoP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I use Opera, because it's faster and more customizable than firefox. I have made my own custom buttons for reading forums, I've made my own right click menus like "Open page in IE" and custom shortcuts like ctrl+q and ctrl+e are set to "close page and move to previous page" and "close page and move to next page". I also use Opera as my e-mail client and rss reader.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I actually use all 3. Firefox most of the time, Opera some of the time, and IE7 for Windows Update or other completely screwed up sites that just plain REFUSE to adhere to standards. Opera is really good, and of the 3 browsers, is still the only one that actually passes the Acid2 test. Firefox 3 is working on it, and Microsoft couldn't give a ***** less about standards.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"somebody had to say it"
No they didn't. - Synne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@ the blooms i think that safari followed by konqueror passed the acid 2 test before Opera. Opera is the only multiplatform browser to pass the acid 2 test.
The reason why i like Opera is the speed and the fact you don't have to install any extensions. - kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I love how opera has a wii browser, mini opera, and linux support. I also wondered why Mozilla and Firefox has no interest in such a huge market. And a browser for the native PS3 environment is still needed.
- s1oan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17"I'm still confused as to why anyone would use opera when you've god firefox . . . any opera users mind explaining?"
Because I like Opera. Period!
Besides, it's faster. - Shenaniganz08, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15you know ill give opera a spin
I use to be a die hard IE fan, then switched to Firefox. I upgraded to 2gbs of ram and firefox stil lags when it downloads. - Complexium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Correct. In fact. Opera can install ad-ons or setups which gives you extended functionality.
http://my.opera.com/community/opera/ - cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You must be new to Digg. :)
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12:::why are you digging me down?:::
because you an idiot? - worbd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11WRONG, JurneyAhed. Content blocking in Opera prevents stuff from being downloaded.
- Kent767, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Besides the aforementioned reasons of memory usage, speed, etc (all good points)
Opera is also more standards compliant than any other browser on the market. To me its a no brainer. I used firefox a while back, but it got bloated, and opera has stayed small. I also only know of a few pages that don't work in opera, these pages don't work in firefox either so its certainly not the browsers fault. - worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7ImTheDarkcyde, you have no idea what you are talking about. The ads are DOWNLOADED you enter content block mode. Yes, WHEN you enter content block mode. Only then, if they are blocked.
Why do people insist on making bogus claims llike that?
Ask the Opera devs yourself. Others did over at my.opera.com, and they have repeated many times that it doesn't download blocked stuff. UNLESS you enter content block mode, where it does download them to allow you to unblock them if you want to. - motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8All about the choice!
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So, Loonacy, you don't understand how it can be convenient to surf while not at home? Or in front of your TV?
rpgguy1o1, it isn't crippled. It's adapted to the platform it's running on. A gaming console is not a PC. - Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6actually its You who is wrong ImTheDarkcyde.
When You go into Block Content The blocked content is only then loaded again so You can make any changes You want...if You have blocked something unintentionally, or You would have to click blindly on blocked content to see what have You blocked. - IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I used to feel like a minority for using Opera. Not so much anymore =]
- rpgguy1o1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I use my wii's browser more than i thought it would, but it's for laziness sake really, when i dont want to go get my laptop or boot up my desktop or something.
but the Wii's opera is horribly crippled, I really hope the next version will be more useable. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I agree with triplehelix.
- TimoP, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Sure, if you want to edit the source code and compile your own version of firefox. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't even change the shortcut keys in the firefox options.
- TiKoZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4and how do u do it ? 2 at the time ;) ?
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Don't feed the troll just block it.
- spyderfreek2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4True that.
Fire Fox portable is SO SLOW when i use it at school, they never update firefox at school and because of this a bunch of sites never work. I have a laptop now so i just plug into the matrix and use firefox with quick proxy switch and other useful plugins. - your_mom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4torrent support would also be something for me to try this out for.....if i had a ps3.
- Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12Huge market? Cuz yeah, when I want to browse the web, I turn my game console on.
- hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I managed to find a keyboard config extension here after realizing there isn't one in the official Mozilla site:
http://mozilla.dorando.at/readme.html
Still built in keyboard shortcuts editing is something I take for granted with Opera along with a dozen other minor quirks. Sure they can be replicated with Firefox after spending some time searching and tweaking but its not quite as simple. - michelrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unbelievable! Wow, these are cool!
- lolo2007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0@ the blooms i think that safari followed by konqueror passed the acid 2 test before Opera. Opera is the only multiplatform browser to pass the acid 2 test.

http://www.gwafi.com/news.html http://www.gwafi.com/story.html - JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7The only thing that keeps me from usng Opera is 'lack' of adblock - Fx blocks them before they load, Opera waits for them to load before blocking them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1agreed
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ahh, Minimo is for Windows Mobile devices, not necessarily cell phones in general. I guess that is one area where Opera has something and Mozilla doesn't, although I can't understand why anyone would buy a regular cell phone over a smartphone if they knew they were going to use internet.
- eddmarriner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I have all three browsers; opera , firefox and IE.
90% of the time i use operas as its my choice of browser for loads of reasons.
10% i use firefox/IE for doing curtain tasks such as win updates etc.. - Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@theblooms
The Firefox 3 alpha (or "Gran Paradiso") has passed the Acid2 test for quite a while now. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I agree with everyone who dugg him down.
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Hey, so now people can use bittorrent on their PS3s? Interesting, might becoming a compelling "media center" type thing if the main PS3 OS was able to access downloaded videos. Of course, the legality, is an issue, but... although from reports I've seen on this site and others, using PS3 linux is like using a Pentium 200mhz or so. I should find someone with a PS3 and try out linux on it, since I have a P233 to compare it to. (not posting from it, though.)
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Did anyone say they have no interest? I'm sure they'd be delighted to get more business (they'd probably get paid for making a Wii or PS3 browser, as opposed to giving Firefox away for free), but the fact of the matter is that the Opera team has had tons of experience in porting Opera to small/weak/different platforms such as Opera Mini for cell phones. Nintendo hired Opera to make the browser, I don't think Opera went up to them and asked if they could make one, and in any case Linux version? Are you trying to say Firefox doesn't have Linux version? Oh, and if you did any research there's Minimo for cell phones, but it's not as well developed as Firefox is. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/.
So basically, the only places Opera is and Mozilla isn't are closed proprietary platforms that companies, arguably for good reason, wanted a closed, proprietary web browser for. If people could get the code for FirefoxWii, it would make it much easier for them to develop exploits which Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft probably don't want. - petitebrune, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1oh, that's great - I'll try it ont my PC!
- izat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4@TimoP,"I use Opera, because it's faster and more customizable than firefox."
Faster, yes. More customizable? Hell no! How can you even make that claim? You can change anything and everything in Firefox. The reason why people prefer Firefox is its customizability. - rockrapdude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Thank fsm it was you
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Hi, I'm a browser whore. I use Firefox (mainly), Opera, IE7, and Netscape. Can't wait to get my PS3...
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3*yawn*
- Narishma, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Konqueror is also multi-platform. It runs on Linux, BSD, Solaris and some other Unixes.
- Geaugan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Does it load gmail and google calendar properly yet?
