EA wins by simply donating an IP they milked in '89(need I say Tax Deduction?).
OLPC wins by improving a their apps line-up.
Kids win, because they get to play a great game that makes you think.
Nick Negropontes wins because no such deal was announced for Intel's Classmate PC.
And Linux community wins, because it is technically the first game to be released by EA on the platform! - even though it's SimCity.
Win-win! - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+73I actually think that SimCity can be a very educational experience. It was one of the first games I played when I was little and that's how I began to understand the way taxes work, amongst other things.
- xirtap, on 11/11/2007, -8/+79Nothing says education more than games.
- jpwhitmore, on 11/11/2007, -4/+72they couldnt splurge for 2000?
- gharding, on 11/12/2007, -2/+43They should install DopeWars, too. Give the kids some lessons in economics and protecting your turf!
- aroundtheblock, on 11/06/2008, -3/+40and they didn't throw Sim Ant in too? cheap *****
- itchcity, on 11/10/2007, -2/+34When the famine hits I'll be in the hut playing SimCity
- UtahApocalyse, on 11/10/2007, -0/+29Dugg. I remember playing SimCity the original in school for some class. This is a great idea.
- AttilaD, on 11/12/2007, -2/+26WHAT! No Oregon Trail?
// am I too old? - roflcopterdown, on 11/12/2007, -0/+23I think this is a great idea. When I was a kid, I learned a lot about how modern society works from SimCity. For example, YOU CAN'T CUT FUNDING FOR TRANSPORTATION! YOU WILL REGRET THIS!
- jlgosse, on 11/10/2007, -4/+26Games that they aren't making any money off of anyway, so why does it matter? Either way, great play by them, but they're only doing it for good P.R.
- sotu, on 11/12/2007, -1/+23Who didn't love this game?
- BlackJackJester, on 11/10/2007, -0/+21Did you crank taxes up to 50% and put houses next to power plants?
- chrisbarr, on 11/12/2007, -2/+23because kids in developing countries always have easy internet access...
- pbaehr, on 11/12/2007, -2/+22Win-Win-Win-Win, apparently.
- Shiftgood, on 11/10/2007, -1/+19Videogames are complex puzzles where you have to think to win. I dont see why people dont get this?
p.s. wheres oregon trail!? ***** yeah i want to caulk the wagon and float the river my oxen be drownin like a *****. - saleem, on 11/10/2007, -1/+18still, it could run sc2000...
- Metalmoon, on 11/10/2007, -0/+15"You have killed 2,100 lbs. of buffalo, but can only carry 200 pounds"
- saleem, on 11/10/2007, -0/+15agreed, it's a good simulation. and the simulation aspect of positive/negative feedback loops really got more and more sophisticated as you get to Sim City 4
- mortigon, on 11/12/2007, -1/+16We played Where in the World is Carmen San Deigo
That bitch - Shawn4168, on 11/12/2007, -1/+15Win-Win-Win-Win-Win, actually.
- southwo9, on 11/11/2007, -0/+14i guess it wasn't THAT educational...
- xXGeechXx, on 11/10/2007, -0/+13Sweet, how do I get a OLPC laptop?
- Corinthos, on 11/10/2007, -0/+13I like the early ones. Just sit back and have fun, the later ones are too much work to have fun.
- Flashman, on 11/12/2007, -1/+13SimCity 2000 introduced water pipes and management. I'm sure that would just confuse kids in Africa, having never seen a water pipe.
- jjb123, on 11/10/2007, -2/+13Then get board and blow up your city.
- spudnic, on 11/12/2007, -9/+20They're like macs in that respect.
Sorry. - AltEfFour, on 11/10/2007, -2/+12SimTower was better imo.
- merreborn, on 11/10/2007, -0/+10I always preferred the original, personally. It was elegant in its simplicity.
I actually dropped $5 on an old boxed copy I found at a flea market a few years ago. Still have it. - Cyberen, on 11/14/2007, -0/+10The reticulating splines were too expensive.
- chris8535, on 11/11/2007, -1/+11Not a half bad idea. SimCity is probably one of the best games that balances entertainment with basic education. My father and I both enjoyed playing it in 1989 and competing to develop larger and larger cities. Fund management, city politics, and attention to detail all combine to create a really good OLPC game.
- Stradenko, on 11/10/2007, -0/+10Starting november 12, http://www.laptopgiving.org/
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+8What the hell kind of computer can't handle Simcity 2000? Geez, I'll bet you could run it on a 486. Which reminds me, why the hell aren't modern computers any quicker at normal day-to-day tasks (web surfing, word processing, etc.) than ancient fossil computers like the 486?
- mrjit, on 11/10/2007, -2/+10I'm assuming the OLPC and it's 8800GTX killer GPU can't handle it.
- kettlechips, on 11/11/2007, -7/+15They should have at least made it SimCity 2000
- munkyxtc, on 11/10/2007, -0/+8pop Oregon trail on there also and they'll be all set for a productive childhood.
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -2/+10Good for lincity.
- commiecat, on 11/11/2007, -1/+8How about Lemonade Stand?
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+7I hate Sims... They constantly bitch about taxes, but then they get upset when the roads start falling apart, the fire department shuts down, and the police are rioting in the streets because there's no money in the budget. That right there is why the disaster button was invented.
- rivalius13, on 11/10/2007, -0/+7Always kill the hooker after sex to get your cash back. Something I live my life by.
- pkonink, on 11/12/2007, -2/+9Gaming and education are the same thing. The behavior of animals in the wild even suggest they use games to learn how to fight, forage for food and other necessary skills they need to survive. I play lots of (not video) games with my infant to teach him a variety of basic skills. I believe there is also data to suggest that play-oriented education is more successful than traditional rote/memorization education, but I will leave that to you to look up.
Video games fulfill this same role. Video games like SimCity, OregonTrail, the Carmen Sandiego games are obviously educational. But even games like Bioshock are educational in the sense that they teach hand-eye coordination, pattern recognition and decision making skills. In fact more and more games (like Bioshock) even introduce morality education (like do I kill little sister or not?). Military flight simulators are essentially games that teach pilots how to fly.
So to put it simply, your statement is 100% correct. And adding SimCity to this initiative was a brilliant idea. - plizard, on 11/11/2007, -1/+7wine ...... ftw!
- cnot3, on 11/11/2007, -10/+161989 version? how about simcity 2000 at least, cheapskates.
- gthyb, on 11/09/2007, -0/+6Here ya go kids. And when you're done...start building a city.
- altrego99, on 11/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, I learned a lot about Mars and alien cultures from doom.
- trogdoor, on 11/12/2007, -1/+7"You died of dysentery, and were eaten by a grue shortly thereafter" Wait what?
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -3/+9Seriously...how bad do you look blasting someone for them GIVING something away?
